Taking lots of water and dividing your meals into smaller meals help to boost metabolism as I've read.

The more muscles are exercised(used ) , the more they hypertrophy
and shed the accompanying fat cells as well as increase their ability to burn fat and use energy.
The aforementioned increases the fat burning ability of the body even at rest ..
the body is turned into a fat burning furnance ; allowing for some indulgencies ......
a succint example is the athlete who eats a big bowl of starch and food but
finds it difficult to add weight ; rather he remains trim and fit ...
the body has been turned into a fat burning furnance ....

Yes the muscles needs protein to function intrinsically ,
but that must come after the muscles have been put into use ( their level of metabolism has been raised )

I'm on a 1200 calorie diet ..and that's without the cardio

Yes you're pretty right ; 3500 caloric deficit is equivalent to the loss of a pound ;
but you have to be careful so that you don't lose muscle mass
That would be counter productive ;
Your muscles represent some shape to you and the ability of the body to
[b]Burn fat , even at Rest

Dont toy with your muscles[/b]

How do you preserve your muscles and continue with your weight loss plan ?
Simple
You have to know your caloric maintenance value
That is the caloric intake that will keep you at your present weight
Decrease intake below it to lose weight ; or increase muscular activity and
take in the maintanance caloric value or slightly higher, to burn fat : even at rest
and have some indulgencies .

How do you determine your caloric maintenance ?

In case it’s not obvious enough, calorie maintenance levels are
different for everyone because we all have different daily calorie requirements.
It’s not like everyone with a certain goal or body type has the same maintenance
level or anything like that.
Instead, your calorie maintenance level is dependent on many factors that are
specific to you and your exact situation.
These factors include:

• Height, Gender
• Weight
• Age
• Activity level
• Metabolic Rate
• Thermic Effect Of Food
• Non-Exercise Activity Thermo genesis (NEAT)
Your specific calorie maintenance level is tailored to you and you alone.
Even if you are the same age, height and weight as someone and have
the exact same activity level and goals as they do, you can both still have
very different calorie maintenance levels and daily calorie requirements in general.
Luckily though, there are a few quick and easy ways to get an accurate estimate of
what your daily calorie maintenance level is
.
Here are my favorite methods…
Method #1: Body Weight (lbs) x 14-17 = Estimated Daily Calorie Maintenance Level
Just take your current body weight in pounds and multiply it by 14 and 17.
Somewhere in between those 2 amounts will usually be your daily calorie maintenance level.

You can equally use this method:
Multiply your weight (in pounds) by
12 if you have a sedentary lifestyle,
14 if you are moderately active (you work out 3-4 times/week),
or 16 if you are very active (5-7 times/week).
Kindly note the relationship between kilograms and pounds: 1 pound =0.4kg;
So to convert your weight in kilograms to pounds, divide your weight in kilograms by 0.4

hello ..

I've been on a weight loss regime for 91 days now ...today is day 92... I decided to keep an online journal this month to encourage those struggling with weight loss.


I'm 6ft 5 inches tall
at the beginning of my journey (day 1) , I weighed 105 kg (232 pounds) which placed me above the "overweight" margin on BMI calculations...with my height, I looked really huge.

well I'm proud to say right now (day 92) I weigh 84 kg (185 pounds)....perfect weight.... which wasn't so easy to accomplish I tell you...... perseverance is the key.. one day at a time.

at least no one can see me as "plump" anymore angry

I also engaged in weight training and lots of abdominals

so I'm noticing moderate muscular definition which I'm satisfied with...


....I'm also starting to see the outline of my abs better and better everyday wink

and that brings me to my target for this month smiley

I want to lose a little more weight to enable my abs get more pronounced cool

5kg should do the trick ..I intend to lose the final 5kg this month so I enter the new year ... with my goals accomplished

I shall write everything I eat, and all my exercise here

BURNS

Children,mentally unstable people,light skin and albinos are mostly affect.

Causes:
Fire, hot water, electricity, chemicals, sun ray, lighting.

Pointers:
Severe pain,red skin, peeling or blistering of skin (blackened,if caused by electricity), watery fluid from the affected part, swelling of the affected part.

WHAT TO DO:

* Remove the heat source or the person from the heat source.

* Remove his clothing if it contains the source of the burn

* Use running cool water (but not cold,so no ice pack) to cool the affected part for about 20minutes or immerse the affected part in water...this reduces inflammation and swelling.
Beer or soft drink can be used if water is not available.

* apply first aid gel (if available) to the affected part.

* Remove any ornamentals, jewelries, watches or tight clothing (these maybe difficult to remove when the affect part swells.

* If the person is a victim of burning house...
bring him out in the open space for fresh air...
Check his airway and breathing and clear nose/mouth.
Do CPR, if unconscious or breathing is bad.

If the person is feeling faint,lay him down.

If clothing is on fire...
Cover the flames with coat or blanket and set the person onto the ground to remove oxygen from the burning area.



DON'Ts:

# don't break blisters or remove peeled skin

# don't remove any fabric stuck to a burn

#don't apply creams,ointment or lotion...it can lead to infection

#don't immerse severely burnt area in cold water.


PREVENTION OF BURNS

# install fire or gas leak alarm in the house or workplace

# have fire extinguisher installed in an easily accessible corner of the house.

# put gas cylinders outside the house and well protected from reach of children

# use silk paint instead of oil paint on the walls

# switch off any electical appliance after use.

# always keep hot water or chemicals on the floor but not in pathway. And store chemicals properly.

# albinos, when under the sun, should wear clothing well covering the body and use umbrella and sun shade.
I must add that the fire extinguishers must be valid ; have a maintenance and check plan as well as train the occupants of the house on the use of the fire extinguisher..
what to do in the event of fire must equally be streamlined and discussed .

[b]Pot bellies have, for generations,
been associated with excessive
intake of beer and other alcoholic
drinks. However, experts have shed
light on this, saying that pot belly
is a hereditary problem which,
when given the right environment, manifests in a man.

It is usually the practice in many communities to make
fun of men with pot bellies, considering that big bellies
are mostly seen in pregnant women. Some even attribute
these big bellies to excessive alcohol consumption and
the fact that such men eat a lot of meat.

Why some men have pot belly is a question that many
wonder about, especially because hardly is it seen in
young men, or even in those still in active sporting
activities such as football and athletics. But not to
worry: experts, looking into the phenomenon have found
that pot belly in men is a hereditary attribute rather
than a problem, arising from alcohol consumption.

Well, a study to shed light on this has revealed that
although, people who drink regularly are more likely to
put on weight, they do not necessarily accumulate fat
around the belly regions.

While the experts believed that the study provided an
empirical basis for the common belief that beer drinking
and waist circumference were positively associated, they
declared: “In terms of the beer belly belief, an
explanation could be that all the observed beer bellies in
the population result from the natural variation in fat
patterning and not from the fact of drinking beer.”

The scientists who undertook this study looked at beer
consumption, weight and body measurements in almost
20,000 people on two occasions over a period of eight
years. Age, smoking, education, physical activity and
several other chronic diseases were also taken into
account by the researchers. Men who were classed as the
heaviest drinkers regularly consumed over a litre of beer
a day.

It found that increased beer consumption over time was
linked with increased waist circumference, particularly for
men. However, once a person’s overall weight was taken
into account, the importance of these associations
disappeared, thus suggesting that any weight gain from
beer is distributed all over the body, rather than being
concentrated around the waist.

The team’s conclusion, in the study published in the
European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, was that genetic
factors dictate how people put on weight far more
significantly than drinking beer. Though they argued
that beer bellies are actually caused by genes rather
than heavy alcohol consumption, they insisted that their
findings do not mean that drinking should be
encouraged, and recommend giving up alcohol
completely to avoid gaining weight.

Some cases were linked to stress. A hormone called
cortisol, released during stress response, was implicated
in developing belly fat.

Potbelly in many individuals may be an attestation to
their poor eating habits. A man that eats lots of food
and does little exercise is likely to develop a potbelly. It
is also a function of body shape and gender.

For instance, in middle-aged women, hormone loss
seems to play a role in its development after 40. As
women lose oestrogen, the female hormone, weight
gathers in the midsection.

Potbelly is due to over-indulgence in all sorts of food.
Even if you have a genetic trait for being fat, if you take
to your doctor’s advice early enough, it is possible to
prevent pot belly occurring.

A lot of reasons such as consumption of a diet rich in
sugar, fat and alcohol intake over time, can lead to
someone having a pot belly. Evidences point to the fact
that those with pot belly stand a higher risk of
developing diabetes and other cardiovascular diseases
such as stroke and heart disease.

Though some people are genetically predisposed to
being fat, when such people indulge in taking unhealthy
diet and live a sedentary lifestyle, the individual may be
setting a foundation to developing pot belly and other
cardiovascular diseases such as stroke and heart disease
and thus, such people can die young from complications
associated with these health conditions.

Potbelly could also be suggestive of other hidden
diseases that are yet to manifest such as liver problem.
Pot belly can occur in someone that has liver disease
that stated for more than six months due to collection
of water or fluid in their belly. It could be so big that
when people see the man, many people may think it is a
sign of good living.

Experts are of the opinion that the more beer you drink
the more weight you gain. Beer and other alcoholic
drinks are high in calories and will contribute to weight
gain if taken in excessive amounts. Meanwhile, excess
weight gain is detrimental to health in numerous other
ways.

In terms of public health relevance, the researchers said,
“Our data provided only limited evidence for a site-
specific effect of beer drinking on waist circumference,
and beer consumption seems to be rather associated
with an increase in overall body fatness. It may be
therefore important to focus on beer abstention to
maintain body weight.”

Having a pot belly is not really worth it. Apart from the
possibility of this predisposing to health problems like
cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke,
experts have linked it with cognitive decline as one gets
older.

Abundant evidence shows exercise can help with pot
belly. The benefits of exercise may sound too good to be
true, but decades of solid science confirm that half an
hour of moderately intense physical activity in a day can
help you avoid a host of serious ailments, including heart
disease, diabetes, depression, and several types of
cancer, particularly breast and colon cancers. Regular
exercise can also help one sleep better, reduce stress,
control one’s weight, brighten one’s mood, sharpen
one’s mental functioning, and improve one’s sex life. In a
nutshell, exercise can help maintain a health and well-
being.[/b]
Let me ask a question ; have you ever seen those men who till the road laying cables for upwards of 50kilometers have pot bellies ? the answer is no ... pot bellies result when you have excess calories than you burn ; it is in the natural process of adding weight ; now why the tommy , you are not adding height again , the only place fat can be added is at the waist line and tommy ...it is not alcohol per say ;; it is the caloric intake ; let me ask ; what does alcohol contain ... ACUTE ASTHMA

Asthma is regarded as a chronic inflammation of the airway which tend to cause muscle spasm,increase mucus secretion and cause narrowing of the airway. Hence the breathlessness the sufferers experience. Its usually triggered by a factor.

Common triggers:
Chest infection,pollen,dust,fur,smoke,fumes from frying oil,cold,exercise,excessive emotions...


Pointers:
_Breathlessness
_difficulty in speech
_chest tightness
_Wheezing
_Persistent cough
_Poor skin colour


¤ Mild attack:


Short of breath, wheeze, cough, chest tightness.



¤ Moderate attack:
Loud wheeze, breathing difficulties, can only speak in short sentences.



¤ Severe attack:
Distressed, gasping for breath, difficulty speaking two words, blueness around the mouth.

WHAT TO DO:

* Remove the person from source of triggering factor

* Rest the person,usually the person sits up,leans forward with his hand on a table or on his knees.

* Administer his reliever medication,one puff at a time (usually one minute interval), use spacer if available,especially for a child.

* Give 3 puffs (mild attack) then 6-8 puffs (severe attack) waiting for a minute between each puff and, if no improvement, repeat after 4 to 6 minutes(depending on the severity).

* Rush to hospital or call paramedic,if these measures are not helpful.



HOW TO GIVE THE PUFFS

#1. Using the inhaler with spacer...

*Remove cap and shake inhaler well.



* Insert inhaler into spacer.



*Have the person breathe out completely and put mouth tightly around spacer mouthpiece.



*Press inhaler once to deliver a puff.

Have the person breathe in slowly through the mouth and then hold breath for 10 seconds.



* Give a total of 4 puffs( for mild attack) or 6-8 puffs (for severe attack), waiting about a minute between each puff.



#2. Using Inhaler Without a Spacer...

*

Remove the inhaler cap and shake well.

*

Have the person breathe out all the way and seal lips tightly around inhaler mouthpiece.



* As the person starts to breathe in slowly, press down on inhaler one time.

The person should keep breathing in as slowly and deeply as possible (about five to seven seconds) and then hold breath for 10 seconds.

*

Give a total of four puffs ( for mild attack) and 6 to 8 puffs( for severe attack), waiting about one minute between each puff.

* After each set of the 4 or 6 puffs, wait for 4 or 6 minutes (depending on the severity). If the person still has trouble breathing, give another set of 4 or 6 puffs.

*

If there’s still little or no improvement, repeat the steps

until ambulance arrives or hospital is reached.

[ Remember to start CPR when the need arises ]
In the management of acute severe asthma , it is most important we start from health promotion and prevention efforts for the asthmatic ; in this case , the asthmatic should be on his routine inhaled coricosteriod and brochodilator ; this in addition to abstaining from all triggers reduces tremendously the frequency of attacks .. and of course the severity ... every asthmatiic is advised to pick up (buy ) a Nebulizer which can be used if the asthmatic exercerbation is not controlled with the traditional Ventolin .. it is not expensive ... cheers

SEIZURE

This is commoner in children and epileptics.
Note that seizure can occur without convulsion or loss of consciousness.

Pointers:
_unresponsiveness _staring without blink _twitching involuntarily _fall to the floor _rigidity _loss of bladder or bowel control _foaming in the mouth


WHAT TO DO:

* The goal is to keep the person from injury until the seizure stops or until the person is taken to hospital

* BE CALM (mothers tend to loose their composure in this situation) it's important to be calm and reassure other people who may be nearby.

* Loosen any tight cloth or necklace around the person's neck

* Remove any dangerous object around the person even furniture. If in public,clear people around.

* Time the seizure,note when it started and when it stopped. Also observe the character of the seizure (the doctor will ask you all these in the hospital )

* Don't try to restrict the person's movement or hold him down,unless he moves towards a dangerous object.

* However,if if twitch is not violent...you can cushion his head. Turn him to his side(to prevent choking from saliva or fall back of his tongue). Keep the person airway open by gripping his jaw and gently tilting his head back.

* If the person is a child...tepid sponge his body with cold towel

Call the paramedic or rush to hospital.

For Epileptics...

* Rush the person to hospital if it lasts for more than 5mins otherwise allow the seizure to resolve on its own.

* As soon as the seizure ends,quickly roll the person onto his side,open and clear his airway and mouth.

* Allow the person to sleep until fully recovered.but check for reflex responds every few minutes. However,if he does not wake within 10mins or not breathing well,then seek medical attention.


DON'Ts

Do not put anything (not even drug) into the person's mouth during the seizure or immediately after,unless fully conscious. It's wrong practice to put spoon into the child's mouth during the seizure.
For seizues in adults , it will be most pertinent to mention that head injuries earlier in life could predispose one to the occurrence of seizures ;; this is worth noting given the lacadesical manner Nigerians care for their skull ; this is always evident in the propensity to break bottles on heads : amongst the violent youth ; the recalcitrant okada rider who has decided not to use his protective helmet etc ..
For children , every convulsive episode reduces the intelligence quotient of the child , for them, all fevers MUST be abated especially between the ages of 6months to 6 years ..

what matters in walking as a form of exercise is the amount of calories you burn : casual walking is totally different from brisk walking ;
i know we are all familiar with the cliche ; i work a lot in my garden , i dont know why i have not lost weight > the answer is simple ;
you are not burning enough calories because you are you are allowing a rest period while you are walking ... and unfortunately , your intake is ,most times, more than your output

Swimming is about the most effective exercise regimen which caters for all categories of persons ; for the other exercises ; one with certain health conditions would not be advised to participate ; but not for swimming .. you have healer in swimming ..

The general problem in relationships often commences when our partner fails in their supposed responsibilities. Remember she made breakfast before leaving and not making the dinner was probably an occurrence she couldn’t control. Now, here is the logic: the time that would take you, the man, to wait and rant about that unusual lateness, the meal of you-two would have been ready and served. Let me make this clear, when your partner does something unusual, the best you can do is to manage the situation with some considerations. There are issues that could be properly managed in a relationship with good understanding of the situation and your ability to do that makes her respect your personality the more. The ways to a woman’s heart is NOT necessary the gifts, flowers and whatnot, it could be your sense of understanding, judgment or your response or reaction to issues that affects her. A safe landing I guess? Yeah! In my active experiences as a relationship coach, I’ve gathered these important points which would be updated regularly. There is this excessive applaud that goes along with being a man. This has shut the mind of so many men from lowering some standards or compromising even if little. So many men wants to win in their relationships at the expense of the happiness in the union. So many men are powerfully driven by ego even at the detriment or pain of their partner. So many men wouldn’t listen, so many men are aggressive and arrogant. The fact remain that, in a relationship, the real man is the growing man; not a static or one-sided oriented person who wouldn’t adjust his status when needed or compromise when necessary for the happiness of the union. When we say, a woman is a weaker vessel; it doesn’t mean she’s weak in the brain or hands – it only means, more than you imagine, she needs strength from you. How you handle her will determine how she handles you. And if at all you’ve been really bad to her and she has been good still, you’re only pushing her toward a break-down where you would no longer have the same woman you once knew. mcdokwe: Often times, we do meet people and fall in love with them despite their many shortcomings. Unfortunately, most books and articles we read these days tell us not to try to change people we are in a relationship with. This has however become the undoing of many unhappy relationships and marriages today, as people don't want to be CHANGED.
The fact is that someone can get committed to a terrible flirt, a drunkard, criminal, an abusive man, nagging woman and other shortcomings, but no one would want to have to cope with your vices for life.

I am of the honest belief that we get into people's life to impact them and bring about a positive behaviour in them even though that shouldn't be motivated by the desire to change the person. Such behaviour modification should come about with love and openness between both parties.

If you happen to have an undesirable character your partner is having a hard time coping with, make yourself amenable to change unless you want your partner to be unhappy thereby making yourself unhappy too. (Now that is a horrible decision to make) friendship should be fun and when it is not, it should be two people commonly dealing with a challenge and not people struggling to stay together.
