The next time someone passes gas around you, you may want to take a whiff, it could save your life. While most people find the sulfuric smell of a person’s gas repulsive, or at the very least unpleasant, a new study has suggested it actually has some life saving properties. Researchers at Exeter University in the United Kingdom have discovered that the smell of farts actually has some useful properties that could ward off disease if you smell them. It’s all due to the fact that the gas has been linked with controlling inflammation in the body. It’s been said that smelling the unpleasant smell could prevent heart attacks, strokes or even cancer. ‘When cells become stressed by disease, they draw in enzymes to generate minute quantities of hydrogen sulfide.’ said Professor Matt Whiteman of the medical school. Researcher Dr. Mark Wood agrees that the substance could have substantial health benefits, writing, ‘Although hydrogen sulfide is well known as a pungent, foul-smelling gas in rotten eggs and flatulence, it is naturally produced in the body and could in fact be a healthcare hero with significant implications for a variety of diseases.’ Follow my signature for more scientific facts

Instagram Announces Long-form Video Instagram has released a long-form video feature which allows users to post hour-long clips. IGTV lets users create content exceeding the current maximum 60-second clip limit for the first time. It's not clear if the longer videos would include adverts or if users would be paid for their content as they are on platforms like YouTube. Speaking exclusively to Newsbeat, Instagram founder Kevin Systrom said it's in "no rush to figure that out". IGTV will show videos in portrait mode, which Instagram says is the "natural way" people use their phones. Kevin said: "Video deserves a better home on mobile". Tech expert Alex Brinnand, from TenEighty magazine, says IGTV could make Instagram a more dominant player in the social media industry. He said: "We're still yet to see exactly what power Instagram does have. I'm sure there are lots of discussions happening at other platforms about how much of a threat this could be and those are valid". Follow my signature to read more. |
Obama & Attenborough Get New Species Named After Them Scientists have just discovered the fossils of two bizarre new creatures that roamed the oceans 500 million years ago. Obamus Coronatus and Attenborites janeae, named after former President Barack Obama and naturalist Sir David Attenborough respectively, were discovered by scientists from the University of California Riverside. Obamus Coronatus was a small disk-shaped creature less than two centimetres big and didn't move much, while Attenborites janeae was also egg-shaped and also really tiny. Both of the fossils were found in the Flinders Ranges region of southern Australia. Researchers say the animals are apart of a collection of other soft-bodied organisms preserved as fossils, but the new creatures are unlike any type of life described before. OAU sacks professor over sex-for-mark scandal The Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has dismissed Prof. Richard Akindele who was allegedly involved in a sex-for-marks scandal. The Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, announced Akindele’s dismissal in a statement on Wednesday in Ile-Ife. Ogunbodede had, on April 19, confirmed Akindele’s suspension pending the findings of the investigative panel. A student undergoing the Masters of Business programme, Miss Monica Osagie, had released a recorded telephone conversation, which went viral, in which the lecturer, identified as Akindele, demanded five rounds of sex to enhance Monica’s marks. Ogunbodede said that the University Senate at its meeting on June 14 considered the committee’s findings that Akindele had an inappropriate relationship with his student. He said this was established through their conversation in the audio recording, his reply to the query, the oral evidence and the printed ‘WhatsApp conversations’ tendered before the committee. The Vice-Chancellor said Akindele had acted in a manner that compromised his position as a teacher and examiner, in that his conversations with Monica Osagie were about examination scores and inducement of favour for the alteration of examination scores. New Mineral Discovery Confirms Water on the Moon A new discovery reinforces the belief that water exists on the Moon. A team of Japanese scientists identified the mineral moganite within a lunar meteorite found in the desert of northwest Africa. Similar to quartz, moganite is a crystal of silicon dioxide that requires water to grow. “It forms on Earth as a precipitate when alkaline water including SiO2 [silicon dioxide] is evaporated under high-pressure conditions,” according to group leader Masahiro Kayama, a professor at Tohoku University. “*The existence of moganite strongly implies that there is water activity on the Moon*,” he said in a statement. Kayama & Co. analyzed the chemical compositions and structures of 13 lunar meteorites—only one of which contained moganite. Which confirms the scientists’ theory that it was not established in the African desert. “If terrestrial weathering had produced moganite in the lunar meteorite, there should be moganite present in all the samples that fell to Earth around the same time,” Kayama said. “But this was not the case.” These researchers struck gold when they stumbled upon moganite; this marks the first instance of the mineral in lunar rocks. Formal Anglo Boss Sentenced to Six Years in Jail ⛓ Former Anglo Irish Bank chief executive David Drumm has been sentenced to six years in jail. Anglo Irish, which was nationalised in 2009 and wound down from 2011, was synonymous with the lending practices that drove the 'Celtic Tiger' boom and subsequent bust, pushing the Republic of Ireland to the brink of meltdown in 2010. Judge O'Connor sentenced him to six years and ordered that he would get credit for the five months he had spent in a prison in Boston, before being extradited to Ireland in March 2016. She said that she felt "the appropriate headline figure is eight years imprisonment in relation to both counts", but ordered that he serve a six-year sentence after considering mitigating factors. Mr Grehan added that his client's future options were restricted and he would carry with him this "notoriety" for the rest of his days. Check my signature to read more |
