Sports / South Africa Vs Tunisia: AFCON 2023 (0 - 0) On 24th January 2024 by Dyt(f): 10:06pm On Jan 23
South Africa will conclude their Africa Cup of Nations 2023 (AFCON) group-stage campaign against Tunisia at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium on Wednesday.

South Africa, the 1996 champions, suffered a 2-0 loss to Mali in their campaign opener and bounced back with a thumping 4-0 win over Namibia on Sunday. Percy Tau broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 14th minute and Themba Zwane bagged a first-half brace.

Thapelo Maseko, who came on as a substitute in the 70th minute, registered himself on the scoresheet just five minutes later, scoring his first goal for Bafana Bafana.

Tunisia, who were the runners-up in the 1996 edition of the competition, have endured a winless start to their campaign. After losing 1-0 to Namibia in their campaign opener, they held Mali to a 1-1 draw on Sunday. Both teams scored in the first half as Lassine Sinayoko's 10th-minute opener was canceled out by Hamza Rafia 10 minutes later.

The draw made things very interesting in the Group E table, with first-placed Mali and last-placed Tunisia separated by three points. So, each team from the group is in contention to qualify for the knockout round.

Sports / Mauritania Vs Algeria: AFCON 2023 (1 - 0) On 23rd January 2024 by Dyt(f): 8:32pm On Jan 22
Mauritania will square off against 2019 champions Algeria in their final group-stage match of the Africa Cup of Nations 2023 (AFCON) at the Stade Bouaké on Tuesday.

Both teams have endured a winless start to their campaign, with Mauritania suffering back-to-back defeats and the 2019 winners playing two draws in a row.

The Lions of Chinguetti are making their third-straight appearance in the group stage of the AFCON and have been winless in eight games thus far. After failing to score in the previous edition, they found the back of the net in their meeting against Angola last week.

Algeria were held to a 1-1 draw in their campaign opener by Angola and in their previous outing, they narrowly avoided a loss and played out a 2-2 draw against Burkina Faso.

Baghdad Bounedjah was the hero once again as he equalized for his side in the 51st minute. After Burkina Faso retook the lead thanks to Bertrand Traoré's penalty, Bounedjah headed in the equalizer in the fifth minute of injury time, with Adam Ounas, who replaced Riyad Mahrez in the 74th minute, picking up the assist.

The Desert Warriors need a win from the match to ensure a top-two finish in Group D. Angola and Burkina Faso, both have four points to their name and meet on Tuesday. If they settle for a draw, Algeria's chances of making it into the next round will be slim.

Sports / South Africa Vs Namibia: AFCON 2023 (4 - 0) On 21st January 2024 by Dyt(f): 7:52pm On Jan 20
It may only be Matchday 2 of the Africa Cup of Nations, but South Africa and Namibia already find themselves at a potentially pivotal moment ahead of their duel at Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium on Sunday due to contrasting fortunes in their respective Group E openers.

South Africa lost 2-0 to Mali on MD 1, meaning more dropped points this weekend will almost certainly require them to win their final – and toughest on paper – game of the group stage against Tunisia next week if they’re to have any realistic hope of reaching the knockout phase.

Namibia, on the other hand, opened their campaign with a shock 1-0 win over Tunisia, earning their first-ever victory at the Africa Cup of Nations. If they make it two from two, they’ll achieve another first by booking their spot in the next round.

Sports / Zambia Vs Tanzania: AFCON 2023 (1 - 1) On 21st January 2024 by Dyt(f): 7:34pm On Jan 20
Zambia and Tanzania will bring the curtain down on Matchday 2 in Group F on Sunday, with both sides seeking their first win of the tournament. In fact, Tanzania are still looking for their first win in AFCON history, losing six and drawing one of the seven games they’ve played in the competition. Adel Amrouche’s side have shipped 3+ goals in four of these seven games, including a 3-0 defeat to Morocco on MD 1.

In truth, it was always going to be difficult for Tanzania to threaten the Atlas Lions, but it was alarming just how toothless they were going forwards. The Taifa Stars managed just two touches in Morocco’s box, their lowest tally in an Africa Cup of Nations game, while only Namibia (1) against Morocco in 2019, and Zimbabwe (1 against Guinea in 2022) have had fewer on record.

Sports / Morocco Vs DR Congo: AFCON 2023 (1 - 1) On 21st January 2024 by Dyt(f): 7:23pm On Jan 20
Morocco enter Matchday 2 at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with expectations only growing about their chances of glory. They have only won the competition once before – back in 1976 – and have also only made the final on one other occasion (2004), so they don’t have much AFCON pedigree, but their current team is arguably their greatest ever.

Following on from finishing fourth at the World Cup in Qatar, Morocco are among the tournament favourites in the Ivory Coast and will have only strengthened any belief in their chances with a hugely convincing 3-0 win over Tanzania on MD 1 in Group F.

They will come up against stronger opposition in this tournament, but having kept their opponents to only two shots and a total of just 0.03 xG, they showed just how defensively sound this team is. It was that defence upon which their remarkable World Cup run was built, and it will be key to their progress at AFCON 2023, too.

Education / Aggrieved Customer Calls Out Polaris Bank Over UK School Tuition Refund Impasse by Dyt(f): 10:10pm On Nov 29, 2023
A Polaris Bank customer, Onofue Victoria Ife-Michael, has been left embittered over the bank’s refusal to grant her access to funds refunded into her account by a UK university.

In a series of posts on X, Ife-Michael narrated how she had applied to Roehampton University, United Kingdom, and was offered provisional admission.

However, she said, the admission was later terminated over the school’s quota issues after she had been made to pay £2,500 tuition deposit.

The crypto expert said that since November 2022, she made spirited efforts to get a refund of the tuition deposit from the school to no avail.

She said that after many months of agonising back and forth with the school, the tuition deposit was finally refunded into a Polaris Bank domiciliary account she recently opened.

However, Ife-Michael said she was left in tears after the bank informed her that the funds would be returned to the school.

She wrote, “Yesterday, @PolarisBankLtd did something that really broke my heart. Broke my heart so bad that I cried all day and didn’t sleep all night.

“In June 2022, i got into Roehampton university, London and was required to pay a tuition deposit of £2,500 before I could sit for the pre CAS.

“I made a life altering decision and sold my apartment to raise funds for the tuition fee and other traveling expenses.

“But after i paid and sat through the interview, Roehampton’s communication with me drastically changed and I had to start struggling for a response from them.

“Eventually, they said their intake was full and I couldn’t get in. I was hurt, but I moved on.

“In line with their refund policy, I applied for a refund for the first time In November 2022. This would become the beginning of a long and difficult journey to get my money back.

“I wrote so many emails to the school and spent so much money on airtime to call them. There were weeks of total silence and no response from the school, weeks I had to go through not knowing if I would get my money back or not. This singular experience really altered my life.

“Finally, in July 2023, 8 months after the first refund application, I got the first positive response from Roehampton (I say “positive” because I was told to fill a form for the refund, which I did, but in reality, the refund was declined).

“They couldn’t verify the account details.

“I requested a new form in July, and it took another two months to get the link from the school. Again, it was declined.

“It was then a friend in the UK tried sending some pounds to the account and he discovered that the account wasn’t functioning anymore.

“I wasn’t aware because it wasn’t my personal bank account I paid the deposit (£) from.

“I had sent Naira from @PolarisBankLtd in 2022 to a Gtbank account that sent the money to a UK account. This UK account paid pounds to Roehampton on my behalf.

“I did this because I didn’t have a domiciliary account at the time and I needed to pay in time for the pre CAS interview.

“Roehampton’s refund policy states that money can be refunded only to the account that paid directly.

“Since said account wasn’t functioning anymore, I wrote to the school explaining my challenges and how I had no idea about the account’s closure.

“I then pleaded that they send the money to an account I would provide them.

“So I went to @PolarisBankLtd three weeks ago and opened a dom account with them. I provided roe with my account details.

“Fortunately, Roehampton agreed to pay into the account, and they did. It took 7 days, the money got in on Sunday.

“I didn’t even know it had gotten in because I received no alerts. Only to receive a call from @PolarisBankLtd yesterday and was told that the money would have to be returned to the school because I didn’t send the pounds directly from my account originally.

“I would like to know what kind of policy this is because if this money is returned to the school, I have no idea if I’ll ever get it out. Or how long it would take.

“So many people who are directly related to me have been affected by this because that money has its purpose, especially at such a time when the economy isn’t friendly.

“Imagine the heartbreak and hurt this has caused. Is it abnormal to receive funds from a school even after providing all necessary documentation and information requested?”

Ife-Michael urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to intervene in the matter.
