I don't think it's a matter of shyness but of pride. Most men believe that they are the ones to provide for the lady all the time. That they are supposed to be the one at the given end, and the lady would be at the receiving end.

They believe asking their woman for money threatens their perceived position of being the head in the relationship. The one who calls the shots. The one in charge.

But this is a wrong way to view a man's role in the relationship. And it's normally the consensus with West Africans, Nigerians especially.
