New Orleans is below sea level which is a different issue. For Anambra flooding results either because of the River Niger overflowing into it's drainage basin or because of building on top of swamps which is natures natural drainage or poor man made drainage systems.


Anambra which is highly urbanized needs to do more sophisticated water management. Cities should have integrated underground drainage systems and direct storm and waste water to man made reservoirs where they can be treated and returned to buildings as piped water or used for irrigation or farming.

For places lying within the river basin, they should be marked free from buildings and all relocated away from it. Ogbaru, Atani, Otuocha for example.

Water especially fresh water is a massive resource that should be controlled, managed and utilized for economic purposes. Aquaculture, agriculture, manufacturing, hospitality use heaps of water.

That is the essence of engineering...........block the excesses of nature and enhance its attributes? My own is let government not sit around and do nothing, while our people suffer! Some parts of those towns may have to go but I believe over 90% can be protected by well designed dike and levee system...........this is a river not even an ocean....!

The dreaded Niger River floods are with us again, nobody is even reporting the flooding in parts of Anambra state this year! The inhabitants of the affected areas are our people, we need to start thinking of effective and sustainable solutions to these natural occurrences! We have geographers and civil engineers in Igboland who can proffer workable solutions. I am neither but I have seen levees or setback levees in parts of New Orleans that protect the city from flooding! we can use dredged sand from the Anambra and Niger rivers to build a semi-circular setback levee and canals to protect towns like Mmiata, ogbaru etc,

If you notice the road built by Soludo was not flooded, all we need to do is pretend we are building a road on the outskirts of the affected towns. This time, we make the earth embankments at least 2 meters higher and just enclose the towns from flooding. Excess water may be channeled away by canalization into the interior to irrigate farmlands! that's my layman's suggestion anyway..........we cannot fold our hands and pretend the problem does not exist........let us challenge OURSELVES!
