The lockdown imposed in Kaduna state to contain the spread of COVID-19 has been extended for another 30 days by Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

The Kaduna state government disclosed on Saturday, April 26, that the governor took the decision based on the recommendation of the state standing committee on COVID-19.

Muyiwa Adekeye, a spokesperson to the governor in a statement noted that the extension of the lockdown is effective from April 26.

According to the new 30-day extension, the two-day window during which the restriction of movement is relaxed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays has been reduced to only one day.

The statement said Wednesdays will be lockdown-free until the trajectory of COVID-19 infections becomes clearer.

The government-mandated persons going out of their homes to wear facemasks and observe social distancing.

The governor's aide pointed out that during the lockdown the only category of people exempted are workers in essential services.

He warned that those found violating the lockdown would face fines, imprisonment and forfeiture.

The Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Mr Abba Kyari, has died more than two weeks after he tested positive for COVID-19.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, announced Mr Kyari’s death on Twitter.

Another of the President’s spokespersons, Mr Garba Shehu, who also tweeted about the development said Mr Kyari died on Friday.

News that Mr Kyari had tested positive for COVID-19 first broke on March 24, about 10 days after he returned from a trip to Germany during which he met with officials of Siemens in Munich on Nigeria’s electricity expansion programme.

Mr Kyari confirmed the news in a statement on March 29, the same day President Buhari made his first nationwide broadcast on the pandemic and announced a two-week lockdown in Lagos, Ogun and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

In his statement, Mr Kyari revealed that he would be transferred to Lagos from the FCT for treatment and expressed the hope that he would recover and return to work soon.

At the time, Mr Kyari said he felt well and did not exhibit any signs of the disease, which has now infected 493 people in the country and claimed 17 lives, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

A Kanuri from Borno, Mr Kyari was one of President’s Buhari’s closest allies.

Appointed Chief of Staff in August 2015, he became considered one of the most influential and powerful members of the Buhari administration.

Prior to his foray into politics, Mr Kyari had a professional career as a lawyer and spent years in the banking industry, rising to become the Chief Executive Officer of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) at some point.

President Muhammadu Buhari will address Nigerians by 7pm on Monday.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, announced this in a statement hours before President Buhari is scheduled to address Nigerians.

“Television, radio and other electronic media outlets are enjoined to hook up to the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) respectively for the broadcast,” he said.

The President is expected to address Nigerians on the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as some residents in Lagos, Ogun, and the Federal Capital Territory expect to know whether the lockdown would be extended or not.

More than a million positive cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed with thousands of deaths recorded in many countries across the world.

As of April 12, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said a total of 323 cases have been confirmed with 10 deaths in the country.

It noted that 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have recorded at least one confirmed case of coronavirus while a total of 85 people have been discharged.

On March 29, President Muhammadu Buhari declared a lockdown in Lagos and Ogun States, as well as Abuja, as part of measures to curtail the spread of the disease and ease the stress of identifying contacts with confirmed cases.

In his last broadcast, President Buhari said the movement restriction would last for an initial period of 14 days effective from 11pm on March 30.

He explained that the decision was taken based on the advice of the Federal Ministry of Health and the NCDC.

The President then advised residents of the affected places to postpone travels while all businesses and offices there should be fully closed during the period of the lockdown.

Ahead of the day which the lockdown is expected to end – April 13, some residents in Lagos and Ogun State have raised alarm about unrest in their communities.

Despite parading at least 150 suspects recently, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun, Kenneth Ebrimson, played down the report of unrest in parts of the state.

Ebrimson, who spoke on Monday during an interview on Sunrise Daily, explained, “I think we are dealing with the issue of apprehension. Earlier this month, there was a cult supremacy battle in Ifo and the police rose to the challenge and got some of them arrested.”

“Thereafter, this snowballed to Agbado, Ijoko, Ota area and we put up a team to go after the cultists and ever since then, we have been making arrests.

“People have been calling me, there is no day I don’t receive close to 100 calls. Most of these calls are false alarms. The social media is dishing out fear,” he added.

Jack Ma, founder of Ali Baba Group, has announced the donation of 500 ventilators 200,000 suits and face masks, 2,000 thermometers, 1m swabs and extraction kits and 500,000 gloves, to Nigeria, and 53 other African countries.

The donation was made by Jack Ma’s Ali Baba Foundation to African Union Member States.

Ma, who disclosed this on his verified Twitter handle, said that the donation will be the second batch to Africa and is to be distributed by Ethiopian Airlines.

Ethiopian Airlines delivered Nigeria’s share of the first batch of medical supplies donated by Ma including 20,000 laboratory diagnostic test kits, 100,000 medical masks, 1000 protective suits and face shields at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

For over nine decades, Alabukun Powder has maintained its stand as one of the most popular patent medicines commonly found in Nigerian homes, workplaces, pharmacies and street shops. Its cheap price and quick effectiveness keep it from falling off the stall since 1918 when its formula was discovered by a brilliant and hardworking Nigerian pharmacist, Jacob Shogboyega Odulate popularly called ‘Blessed Jacob’.

This reminds one of another Nigerian product, St. Louis Sugar, which has also become a household name over decades of its existence. Both Alabukun Powder and St. Louis Sugar have another thing in common besides being around for long, they are barely advertised in the media, yet they firmly held their ground in their respective markets.

Jacob Shogboyega Odulate was born in 1884 to the polygamous family of Pa Odulate in Ikorodu, Lagos. Jacob Odulate stopped schooling at the young age of 12 and moved to Abeokuta, Ogun state, at the age of 14 in search of greener pastures. According to an account by his eldest surviving daughter, Stella O. Odesanya, Jacob travelled from Ikorodu, his hometown, to Abeokuta on foot within a period of three months. It was in Abeokuta that Jacob met a renowned pharmacist, Doctor Sapara, and volunteered to become his apprentice. Jacob Odulate worked with Dr. Sapara for years before he established his own drug manufacturing company which he named Alabukun. While struggling to make a name for himself and his company, Jacob met a young pretty lady named Sekunmade whom he later married.

It was an unforgettable day in the year 1918, four years after Nigeria was birthed from the amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorates, Jacob Odulate sat at his laboratory desk after tons of researches and developed a formula for a drug he called Alabukun Powder. Jacob Odulate’s formula was a combination of both native and foreign medicines which gave him a result so excellent than he had expected. A packet of Alabukun contain “760 mg of acetylsalicylic acid and 60 mg of caffeine making a total of 820 mg.” It is used to treat many medical conditions which include “migraine, toothache, sore throat, prevention of blood clots, neuralgias, myocardial infarction, transluminal angioplasty and ischaemic attacks.” However, the powder drug is not to be used without a doctor’s prescription and like every other drug, Alabukun Powder has its side effects some of which are swelling due to fluid accumulation, asthma, vomiting, nausea and vertigo.

Alabukun Powder made a big wave as soon as it hit the market in 1918, an era characterized by colonialism which was then in many ways unfavourable to the natives of Nigeria. Alabukun Powder was exported to nearby countries such as Benin Republic, Togo, Cameroon and Ghana as its demand kept soaring higher. Till today, Alabukun Powder is exported far away to Brazil, Cuba and some countries in Europe as well.

Jacob’s drug manufacturing company has its headquarters located in Sapon, Abeokuta, Ogun State. Other products of Alabukun brand are Alabukun Mentholine and an annual journal called Alabukun Almanac which was widely distributed in Abeokuta and its environs between 1920 and 1950. Alabukun Powder wasn’t advertised in the media due its popularity at the time it made its debut in the market and mainly because of its composition. Nevertheless, Alabukun Powder remains one of the oldest and widely used patent medicines in Nigeria and neighboring countries.

Jacob Shogboyega Odulate alias Blessed Jacob died in 1962 at Creek Hospital, Onikan, Lagos and was survived by wife and children.

Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ every December 25th, also known as Christmas Day. Although the exact date of His birth is not known, it was placed between 7 and 2 BC based on the two canonical gospels of the New Testament.

The date was chosen to coincide with the Roman winter solstice and nine months since the conception of Jesus. It is a Christian holiday marked by festivities and family get-togethers where people give gifts to each other especially to children.

People prepare for Christmas a few weeks before its celebration. Homes are decorated with Christmas trees, lights, mistletoe, and nativity scenes. Christmas carols can be heard starting as early as October.
Businesses experience heightened activity during this time as people purchase new clothes and accessories for their children, food to prepare at Christmas Eve, and gifts to give to those they love.

All these are done to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, the time when God sent His Son to save the world from sin. Even though there is much debate as to the exact date of His birth, Christians generally accept December 25th as the day of Jesus’ birth.
The word “Christmas” comes from the Old English word “Cristes maesse” or “Christ’s mass” which was written to form one word starting in the 14th century. It was derived from the Greek word “Christos” (Christ) and the Latin word “missa” (mass).

The word “Xmas,” on the other hand, is used as an abbreviation of the word “Christmas.” The letter “X” comes from the Greek letter “chi,” the first letter in the Greek word for “Christ,” and “maesse” from the Old English word for “mass.” The word is considered as an informal form of the word “Christmas” and, as such, should not be used in formal writing. It has been in use since the year 1100 written as “Xpes maesse.” It evolved into the word “Xmas” during the middle of the 18th century.

Although the words “Christ” and “Christmas” have been abbreviated in the English language for the past 1,000 years, a lot of Christians decry the use of Xmas instead of Christmas because it takes out “Christ” from the word which is meant to commemorate His birth.
It is more associated with the commercialization of the holiday, with advertisements extensively using it because it is more compact, brief, and concise. However it is spelled, though, does not really matter as long as people know what Christmas represents.

He told the congregation during a sermon entitled, ‘Rearranged for Revival’, which is also the theme of the convention, the revelation came while asleep.

The cleric said although he got the messages and the covenant from God, the MFM was not founded until 12 years later.

Olukoya said, “I was sleeping in my one-room apartment in the Boys Quarters of a house located on Herbert Macaulay Way, Yaba, in 1977, when I heard a sharp voice. I then woke up and walked towards the door. But I did not see anybody.

“Again, for the second time, the voice came and as I was wondering whose it was, the Holy Spirit said: ‘son remember the call of Samuel’. Then He started giving the covenant that led to the establishment of the MFM.”

Zlatan Ibile’s management who gave an update about their artiste, have disclosed that the EFCC have returned his car and phone shortly after he was released on bail following his arrest alongside 4 others including Naira Marley.

Recall that while Zlatan temporarily regained his freedom, Naira Marley was charged to court on 11 counts bordering on fraud and he risks going to jail for 7 years if found guilty.

However a member of Zlatan Ibile’s management team who spoke to Sunday Scoop on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the EFCC have returned his car and phone and we should expect more music from him.

“We all know that he was detained for investigations and he has been set free. When he was freshly released, his phone and car were not returned to him.
However, he has now collected all his possessions in the custody of the EFCC.

Three people were released out of the four persons arrested; Marley has been charged to court. Zlatan is okay now and people should expect more music from him” he said.

The spiritual leader of Brotherhood of the Cross and Star, His Holiness Olumba Olumba Obu, has disclosed that 2019 elections will shock both Nigerians and the world.

Olumba, however, stated that the shock will not bring about panic but that God had already restored peace in Nigeria.

In his New Year message at his church headquarters in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, the clergyman called on Nigerians to live in peace, forgive each other, care for one another and persist in doing good only.

Olumba warned against killings and political violence in 2019, adding that immediate recompense will frequently be the lots of many.

He said: “The general elections in Nigeria holding from next month hold surprises and will shock Nigerians and the entire world. But the children of God have no need to panic. God the Father has restore peace all over Nigeria.

“Nigerians should learn to live in peace, care for and forgive themselves in 2019. This year, many will have immediate pay back for whatever they do.”

Isco’s transfer switch to Chelsea this January is off after the player demanded more money, reports say.

Chelsea were all set to sign Isco in a £75million deal and had agreed to pay substantial add-ons.

Isco and his agent were picking up signing on bonuses, driving up the value of the deal to £100m, but have now asked for more money after interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

The Sun claim Chelsea believe Isco has no real desire to play for the club and are poised to pull the plug on the switch.

Real are ready to offload Isco as the Spanish side are happy to cash in on a player no longer central to the club’s long-term plans.

Mauricio Sarri is said to be disappointed with the sudden U-turn, as the Italian was planning to pair Isco with talisman Eden Hazard.

Isco broke his silence on transfer rumours this week, insisting he had no plans to leave Madrid.
