...Proposes N6.8 Billion for Development Amid Green Agenda Goals

The Executive Chairman of Itu Local Government council, Hon. Ubong Wilson Nkutt, on Monday, December 30, 2024, formally presented the 2025 draft budget to the Itu Legislative Council. Addressing the council, Hon. Nkutt described the event as a landmark occasion, being his administration's first budget presentation since assuming office two months ago.

In adherence to the Local Government Administration Law of 2017 as amended, the Chairman highlighted his administration's commitment to transparent governance. He acknowledged the seamless working relationship with the Itu Legislative Council, which has been instrumental in the steady progress made in governance.

A Review of the 2024 Budget

Hon. Nkutt provided a retrospective analysis of the 2024 budget inherited from the transition administration. The budget was valued at N5.43 billion, with a capital expenditure allocation of N2.39 billion and recurrent expenditure pegged at N3.03 billion. The Chairman noted that while the inherited budget posed limitations, his administration prudently operated within its framework to ensure progress.

2025 Budget: A N6.8 Billion Projection

The Chairman announced a proposed budget size of N6.81 billion for the 2025 fiscal year, reflecting an increase of N1.18 billion from the previous budget. The breakdown of expenditures includes N4.00 billion for capital projects and N2.81 billion for recurrent expenditure.

Hon. Nkutt emphasized the administration’s prioritization of needs-based development, aligned with the Green Agenda of Ubongabasi Campaign Organization and the ARISE Agenda of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno.

The Chairman reaffirmed his administration's dedication to fostering balanced growth, channeling resources to critical areas for optimal impact. He assured the council and constituents of efforts to build a government that aligns with global sustainable development goals.

Hon. Nkutt concluded with an appeal to the legislative council for an accelerated hearing and subsequent passage of the budget.

The proposed 2025 budget marks a significant step in the administration's efforts to redefine governance and accelerate development within the Itu Local Government Area.

...drums support for Coordinator, Office of the First Lady

The wife of the Executive Chairman of Itu, Mrs. Idongesit Ubong Nkutt, today December 2nd, flagged off the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) campaign in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The event, which took place at Itam Secondary School, Obong Itam, and Community Commercial Secondary School, Ikot Andem Itam, aimed to raise awareness about the devastating effects of Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

In her speech, Mrs. Idongesit Nkutt emphasized the importance of promoting gender equality and protecting the rights of women and girls. She stressed that GBV is a serious violation of human rights and a life-threatening health and protection issue.

She highlighted the various forms of GBV, including physical, sexual, and psychological violence. She encouraged the students to speak out against GBV and to support survivors.

Mrs. Nkutt also drummed up support for the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Helen Obareki, and prayed for God to continue resting the soul of the late First Lady, Her Excellency, Pastor Patience Umo Eno.

She expressed her continued commitment to supporting education and empowering women and girls in the local government area.

The school principal of Itam Secondary School, Obong Itam, Elder Ime Okon Nkang, in his response appreciated Mrs. Nkutt's efforts and the initiative, saying, "We appreciate the Chairman's wife and her team. We will do our best to teach the students about Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and how to live better lives without violence".

Vice Principal of Community Commercial Secondary School, Ikot Andem Itam, Mr. Emmanuel Dominic Okon, also commended the initiative, emphasizing the importance of educating students about GBV.

Highlight of the event included the sharing of school materials to students, including exercise books, chalks, and other educational materials.

The GBV campaign is part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which runs from November 25th to December 10th.

The Member representing Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Barr. Ime Okon, has commended Governor Umo Eno for the award of contract for the construction of the 10.9km road with 40m-span bridges spanning Nsai Use-Use Ikot Amama-Ibiaku Ikot Esifa-Iton Nkwot Edem Edet.

The approval of the contract award, which spans Ibiono Ibom and Ikono Local Government Areas (LGAs), was announced on Tuesday evening at the end of the State Executive Council meeting chaired by the Governor.

In his reaction, Okon expressed the appreciation of the people of his constituency to Eno for the road project.

He pointed out that with the contract award, the Governor has again demonstrated his love for his constituents.

The federal legislator noted with delight the ongoing infrastructural projects and the construction of ARISE Compassionate Homes by the State Government in Itu and Ibiono Ibom LGAs.

In reciprocity, he assured Eno of the continuing support of his people beyond 2027.

Okon, however, appealed to the Governor to award contracts for the construction of other roads he promised his constituency, particularly the Ikpanya Road and the Afua - Idoro- Ikot Ekwere roads.

During his visit, Hon. Ubong Nkutt commended the resilience, hard work, and investment initiative of Antia's Farm CEO, Mr. Aniebiet Antia who took the Chairman on a comprehensive tour of the farm, showcasing the process of planting fresh produce such as tomato, cucumber, pepper, and watermelon in Itu.

To support the farm's efforts, Hon. Nkutt donated fertilizers, reinforcing his dedication to agricultural revolution in Itu.

This initiative which is inline with the agricultural development drive of His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno as encapsulated in his ARISE Agenda where A- represents Agriculture, further highlights the Chairman's focus on promoting agricultural growth, creating opportunities for farmers, thereby ensuring food security in the Local Government Area. Held on Friday, November 8, 2024, the well-attended event brought together traditional rulers, political leaders, stakeholders, and citizens of Itu Local Government Area to deliberate on the council's development blueprint for 2025.

Hon. Ubong Nkutt, in his welcome remarks, expressed gratitude to His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno PhD, for inspiring the innovative approach to budget preparation, aligned with the United Nations' standards and best practices.

"Permit me to digress and use this opportunity to openly thank His Excellency, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State. Pst. Umo B. Eno PhD, for this innovation of encouraging citizens active participation in the process of budget preparation, which falls in line with the United Nations standard and best practices of bottom-up approach to development", Nkutt said.

Nkutt unveiled the administration's strides, including the ongoing construction of an ultra-modern administrative block complex, slated for completion within the first 100 days in office. He emphasized the importance of collective input in shaping the 2025 budget, ensuring it reflects the people's dreams and aspirations.

He acknowledged the invaluable contributions of officers from the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and Akwa Ibom State Fiscal Responsibility Board, praising their novel approach to budget preparation.

"It will be unfair if I fail to acknowledge the untiring efforts of officers from the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and Akwa Ibom State Fiscal Responsibility Board for this novel approach to budget preparation", he noted.

Stakeholders lauded the Chairman's inclusivity policy, with Paramount Ruler of Itu, HRM Edidem Edet AkpanInyang, pledging support for the administration.

Akparawa James Edet, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, and International President, Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio, commended Nkutt's emulation of the Governor's budgeting approach, predicting an 80% actualization rate.

Rt. Hon. Mrs. Ekaette Ebong Okon, Chairman of the State Secondary Education Board, commended the Chairman's innovative idea, urging sustained collaboration.

The consultative meeting adopted three projects from each of the 11 wards, identified by stakeholders, for inclusion in the 2025 budget.

Participants across political affiliations hailed the transparent, bottom-up approach, ensuring citizens' active participation in the budgeting process.

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno has assured everyone that the State under his leadership will continue to ensure an even distribution of projects across all the local government areas in the State.

Governor Eno gave the assurance at the commissioning of the Primary Health Centre (PHC), at Oboyo Ikot Ita, in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area.

He noted that the construction of the Nsit Ibom PHC is in fulfillment of the promise he made on assumption of office to have a primary health centre, and a model primary school in all the local government areas in the State, adding that in addition to those already commissioned, seven more will be ready for commissioning before the end of the year.

The Governor also assured that 2025 will be a year of projects, given the painstaking, indepth analysis and shift in the approach to the 2025 budget, adding that for Nsit Ibom people, the Nung Udoe- Afaha Nsit, Nsit Ibom and Nsit Ubium Road is well captured in the budget and will be constructed accordingly.

He assured the Speaker and members of the State House of Assembly that their constituency projects will be flagged off soonest, but maintained that the projects must be in line with the ARISE Agenda.

Governor Eno who has been focused on his development blueprint, the ARISE Agenda, said the government was very passionate about the welfare of rural dwellers, and has made consistent efforts to improve their welfare through road construction, model Primary Healthcare Centres, Model primary schools, and interventions such as the free food voucher initiative.

He emphasized that the choice of projects in the rural areas are decided by the people, constructed for the benefit of the people and must be protected by the people against vandalism or misuse.

The Governor who later made a brief stop at the constituency briefing and empowerment of about 1450 persons by Hon. Eric Akpan, member representing the area in the State House of Assembly, at St. Louis Primary School Mbiokporo 1, commended the legislator for his good representation and for touching the lives his people positively.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Augustine Umoh, commended the Governor for the quality of the facility, which he said was of international standard, and assured that it will be judiciously utilised.

He urged the people to register with the Health Insurance scheme to fully benefit from the facility.

The Chairman of Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, Hon. Otobong Aaron, appreciated the Governor for making a difference in Nsit Ibom, and assured him of continuous support from the people of the area.

Similarly, Hon. Eric Akpan noted that it was the first time in the history of the community to have a sitting governor visit to commission a project, and stated that this expression of love will never be forgotten by the people.

On his part, the political leader of Nsit Ibom, Gen. Paul Isang (retd), recalled the ordeal encountered by people of the area, especially pregnant women, who had to go all the way to Etinan Local Government Area to access medical care.

He said the primary healthcare centre was very dear to them and assured that they will ensure its optimal utilisation.

The Chairman, Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Martins Akpan also applauded the Governor for his high premium on primary healthcare, noting that it was a very basic need for all.

Beyond the bulky trucks of Bulk Purchase Agency that move from one local government area to another, distributing food to the people, especially the vulnerable, farmers in Akwa Ibom State are busy cultivating their farms in line with the policies of Governor Umo Eno in agriculture to achieve food sufficiency and showcase the status of Akwa Ibom State as a reputable food basket in Nigeria.

Governor Umo Eno came with lofty ideas condensed to a great vision for agriculture, and there is a likeable revolution in the sector in the State. It is an intentional effort of the governor for the State to attain food sufficiency and food security, barnishing hunger from the land.

While marketing his manifesto for the people of the State ahead of his election, Governor Eno was emphatic that he was going to ensure that the full value chain of agriculture is achieved in the State; he is achieving that achievement for his people.

That is seen clearly in the acronym, A.R.I.S.E which is the governance bible and leadership compass of his administration, where the first alphabet, "A" stands for agriculture. Agriculture is not just the leader of the pack in cosmetics or rubrics of rheotric, it is gaining first class attention from the governor, and was among his first port of call when he assumed office.

Governor Eno was the leader of a delegation to Songhai Farm in Port Novo, Benin Republic to understudy the secret of the success story of that investment. Today, a replica of it is emerging in Ibom Model Farms, which can pass for a modern day Garden of Eden.

Ibom Model Farms is an integrated farm modelled after Songhai Farm which focuses on crop and livestock with capacity for training and potential for tourism. Very importantly, it aids technology transfer.

Governor Eno's policy has made agriculture an interesting, exciting and respectable occupation, throwing up high profile and emerging private entrepreneurs in agriculture. He has given agriculture a new look, a new image and indeed a new name - Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, with a competent professional, Dr (Mrs)Offiong Offor as the Commissioner in charge.

The vision of Governor Eno for agriculture is that more farmers in the State will go for tractors and harvesters than they go for hoes and machetes. That is why government has perfected plans to set up equipment leasing yard to support farmers in the cultivation of massive hectares of land.

Meanwhile, farmers are supported with agricultural machinery to aid land preparations for farming in addition to receiving farm inputs, agrochemicals, access to finance and benefitting from the services of agricultural extension officers.

The ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is encouraging farmers to form themselves into co-operative groups for ease of accessibility to government incentives as well as monitoring their progress by the ministry. These clusters make it easy for the distribution of of farm inputs and agric loans as well as seed multipliers.

Governor Eno's revolution in agriculture is holistic. It covers all forms of agriculture from crop production to fishing, poultry and general livestock. There is sustained distribution of livestock to farmer's multipurpose co-operative societies such as goats, pigs, fingerlings, and birds for those in poultry farming.

Those in crop production often receive improved varieties of their crops covering cassava cuttings, pumpkin seeds, coconut seedlings and maize seeds.

Cash crops much as oil palm, cocoa and even those into rice cultivation are given the necessary support to enable them make good yield with attendant profits.

At intervals, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development often harvest cassava from their demonstration farms, process and sell to the people at reduced prices in an effort to help reduce high cost of staple foods in the market.

The Umo Eno administration has undertaken the distribution of solar irrigation pumps to farmers for watering their farms. There are many agricultural interventions to support the farmers. These interventions are meant to change unproductive conventions such as farm fragmentations that often impede mechanization.

In his wisdom and good intentions, Governor Eno had merged rural development with agriculture. Hence, the aggressive rural development through the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP) has equally added value to what has been achieved in the agricultural sector.

There is strong initiatives and policies to tie agriculture to industrialization in line with the value chain promised by the Governor. That is why the governor visited the Akwa Palms Industry with a view to bringing it to functionality.

The governor is passionate about making the people see agriculture as a culture. To this end, civil servants are given work-free days known as farm days where they are expected to go to their farms.

There is a loveable mental shift on prioritizing agriculture and making it look attractive and lucrative for even the young people. This leads to the acceptable invasion of secondary schools and other institutions for awareness and and re-orientation on the importance of agriculture, and that it is not an occupation of shame but a calling to be proud of.

Even the local government councils are not left out. They have farms and equally donate lands to the State Government for agricultural purposes.

Farmers are at the verge of receiving financial grants to invest in their farms for optimum productivity. This is in furtherance to the Governor's philosophy that there is no alternative to farming. Hence, everyone should return to the farm.

Therefore, while the food distribution programme is appreciated especially as it has put smiles on hitherto frowned faces, Governor Eno has urged Akwa Ibom people to see it as a stop-gap arrangement and not a permanent thing. They are to liken the gesture as manna, knowing that manna does not fall everyday. What to do? Return to the farm. The governor is giving them every support to achieve this.

Truly, Governor Umo Eno has done extremely well in agriculture in Akwa Ibom State, that one is save to say that Akwa Ibom State is an emerging beautiful food basket. Governor Eno is weaving that basket with golden materials. It shall be filled with food from the anticipated bumper harvest from the farm, and hunger shall have no place in the land. Food will not just be available, it will be accessible and affordable in Akwa Ibom State, enormous enough to feed the people and for exports.

…PROMISES MORE SURPRISES FOR CRITICS

Governor Umo Eno, has celebrated the addition of two new CRJ 900 Bombardier series aircrafts to Ibom Air’s fleet, with a promise to flag off more new projects in the coming weeks.

He described criticisms as major catalysts which enhance improved performance, insisting that, “if you want to do anything in this life and people don't criticize, look back again and check.

Speaking at a brief ceremony in Uyo, the Governor highlighted Akwa Ibom’s achievement as the only sub-national in Nigeria with an airline company, while also emphasising his administration’s commitment to developing critical infrastructure without incurring any burden on the people.

Governor Eno proudly shared that the latest aircraft acquisitions were funded by the Government, a rare unique approach that avoids traditional high-interest public financing.

“When we came into office, we promised to continue with what our past leaders have done, particularly, the immediate past administration of Deacon Udom Gabriel Emmanuel.

“For those criticizing us, you have given us the reason to continue.

“Very soon, and in the next two weeks, we are laying foundation for the Aviation Village.

“Before the end of December, we are flagging off the international Market in Ikot Ekpene.

“Before the end of December, we are flagging off the Judiciary Quarters in Uyo.

“Before the end of December, we are flagging of our Special Ambulance Service in the State.

“In the next one week, we shall be harvesting from the employment portal, 5000 young undergraduates and we will pay them fifty thousand naira(N50,000) each.

“This month of November, I have just approved 1.2 billion naira for the payment of gratuities to our retirees.

“We are building roads and this month we are commissioning 72 projects in Akwa Ibom State.”

He said further, “we are building compassionate homes, we are building schools, we are through the Akwa Ibom food purchasing agency, distributing food to our local Government areas.”

“Between now and the first quarter of next year, we will be flagging off a four Star Hotel in Abuja because we are determined to turn all our moribond property to commercial use”, the Governor added.

Furthering on the aviation sector, Pastor Eno announced that, “by next year, the MRO behind us would have been fully ready. Then, we will begin to earn in foreign currency.

“Later on in December, we are going to partially open the brand new international terminal and then it will be fully opened by the first quarter of next year.

The Chairman of Ibom Air, Pastor Imo-Abasi Jacob, in his address expressed gratitude for the Governor's commitment, crediting his financial strategy for the airline's growth.

“This fourth aircraft within a year symbolises our resilience and the Governor’s dedication to Akwa Ibom’s prosperity,” he remarked.

Jacob added that the funding approach adopted by the Governor ensures funds are reinvested into the government, benefiting future developments.

Captain Mfon Udom, CEO of Ibom Air, voiced his pride in the airline’s progress, acknowledging the support of longstanding partners and the Governor’s strategic vision.

“He further said that the airline is moving towards a larger network that will connect more people to Akwa Ibom.

In his goodwill message, the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt.Hon. Udeme Otong, commended Governor Eno’s financial prudence, noting that the Governor has managed state resources effectively without requesting new loans from the assembly.

“It is clear you are working tirelessly to improve our internally generated revenue,” he stated, affirming the Assembly’s support for the administration’s efforts to advance the state’s economy.

In a major boost to healthcare delivery, Itu Local Government Area has launched the enrollment of citizens into the Akwa Ibom State Health Insurance Scheme, ARISECare.

This groundbreaking initiative, championed by the Governor, Pastor Umo Eno aims to provide comprehensive and universal healthcare services to vulnerable populations, including children aged 0-5, the elderly above 60, physically challenged/disable, pregnant women and prison inmates.

The exercise witnessed a massive turnout, with enrollees expressing gratitude to Governor Eno for this life-changing initiative.

Hon. Ubong Nkutt, the Chairman, Itu Local Government Council, praised Governor Eno's visionary leadership, stating that ARISECare will positively impact the lives of the people, especially the elderly, pregnant women, and those prone to diseases.

Nkutt reaffirmed his commitment to the Governor's Arise Agenda, ensuring seamless implementation.

Speaking to the press, the Head Of Programmes Akwa Ibom State Health Insurance Agency, Dr. Enyekekere Edet also commended the Governor's initiative, pledging to ensure successful enrollment.

"A prior need assessment exercise was conducted to guarantee a hitch-free process," Dr. Edet noted.

Enrollees and stakeholders alike have expressed appreciation to the Governor for this initiative, citing its potential to transform the lives of vulnerable populace.

The ARISECare initiative seeks to address critical healthcare needs in Akwa Ibom, where accessible healthcare has long been a challenge.

In a bid to curb the rising cases of malaria in Nigeria, particularly in the South-South region, Ariel Foundation International on Saturday hosted a Malaria Elimination Outreach and Public Education program in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The event, held at the Primary Healthcare Centre, Nsukara Offot, Uyo, brought together hundreds of women, men, and children, who received high-quality mosquito nets and sensitization on the dangers of malaria.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Nigeria accounts for 27% of malaria cases in Africa and 23% of global malaria deaths. In 2022, malaria killed over 619,000 people worldwide, with Nigeria recording over 200,000 deaths.

Sir Moses Ekwere, Country Director and Permanent Representative of Ariel Foundation International to the United Nations, noted that the exercise became necessary due to the alarming rise in malaria patients in Nigeria, especially in the South-South region.

"Malaria kills, and it's our collective responsibility to prevent it," Ekwere said. "Our focus is on women and children, especially pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children aged 0-6 years, who are most vulnerable to the disease."

Ekwere attributed the high malaria prevalence in the region to oil exploration activities, which often lead to pollution and breed mosquitoes.

The outreach follows an earlier need assessment tour by the foundation, where they interacted with community leaders and members, trained them on proper use of mosquito nets, and identified areas of intervention.

Over 900 women with children aged 0-6 years, including men received high-quality mosquito nets during the outreach.

Participants expressed gratitude to the Foundation and pledged to adhere to the teachings and maintain a malaria-free lifestyle.

The delegation, led by Ekwere, included Sir Michael Ufia, Monitoring & Evaluation Specialist; Pharmacist Emaeyak Udeme; Dr. Queen Ufia; Dir. Mercy Nkereuwem, Education Director, and Lady Inemesit Ekwere.

Dr. Nsikan Linus Nkan, Akwa Ibom's Finance Commissioner, emphasized the importance of collective contributions over complaints in transforming the state's education sector, as outlined in Governor Umo Eno's Arise agenda.

To mark his 56th birthday, Dr. Nkan awarded 65 students from Ibesikpo Asutan Local Area with ₦100,000 each in scholarship grants. He encouraged the students to focus on their academic goals, shun cultism, and emulate Akwa Ibom's victorious delegation at the International School Debate in Singapore.

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno has stated that the State will soon launch an independent Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System to complement the Primary Health Care services, and the recently-launched State Health Insurance Scheme.

The Governor made this known, when he took delivery of the initial six, of ten fully- equipped ambulances, at the Government House, Uyo.

Speaking with Government House correspondents while inspecting the ambulances, Gov. Eno said the gesture was a reaffirmation of his commitment to enhance healthcare services in the State, in line with the aspirations of his administration's ARISE Agenda.

According to the Governor, the Akwa Ibom State Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (AKISEMSAS) will run as a stand alone system, run by qualified personnel, but complementary to the Health Insurance Scheme and other components of the State's Health Sector, to ensure swift response to medical emergencies, as is obtainable in some countries across the world.

He directed that health workers be selected and trained on requisite skills to ensure optimum service delivery on the emergency services.

He commended the special features of the ambulances and reaffirmed9 his administration's commitment to support good ventures that would serve the interest of Akwa Ibom people in fulfillment of his campaign promises.

"We want to create an Independent ambulance service system, a stand alone service, headed by qualified personnel. The Ambulance service is special, and they can run independently.

"If we have this ambulance system working, our health insurance working, our hospitals working and we have the medical team working, pay the medical Doctors well and make them happy, we should be able to revive our health sector as part of our ARISE Agenda," Governor Eno stated.

The Senior Special Assistant, Medicals, and Personal Physician to the Governor, Dr. Ekem John, who coordinated the inspection of the ambulances, commended Governor Umo Eno's integrity in keeping to his promise of availing the State of a workable medical emergency service in addition to other lofty projects to boost healthcare services in the state, while also building a sizeable network of roads and other laudable projects.

According to the Governor's Chief Physician, the interventions of the Umo Eno- led administration in the health sector has placed Akwa Ibom State in sync with the current federal government policies in the sector, thereby guaranteeing access to the consolidated revenue fund for healthcare.

The latest being the effective training of Journalists and media practitioners from the Senatorial District to sharpen their skills and upgrade their knowledge to meet up with the 21 century demand.

Notable tutors of media and communication, including the Dean of Communication and Media Studies, University of Uyo, Prof. Peter Esuh, former Media Advisor to the Akwa Ibom Governor, Dr Udeme Nana, and communication scholar, Dr Abasifreke Idiong drilled the media professionals, while Prof Des Wilson chaired the event which had the Senior Special Assistant to Akwa Ibom State Governor on Research and Documentation, Dr Essien Ndueso as moderator.

The Member representing Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Barr. Ime Okon, has called on the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, to immortalise one of the early Nigerian Army veterans, late Obong Phillip Effiong.

To this end, the legislator has suggested that the 2 Brigade cantonment at Mbiokporo in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area be named after Effiong who was the second indigene of what is now Akwa Ibom State to be commissioned into the Nigerian Army after late Brigadier Wellington Umo Bassey who was the first in the whole country.

Pointing out that Bassey and other Army veterans have been immortalised with military barracks and bases named after them, Okon appealed for a similar gesture to be extended to Effiong who hailed from Ikot Akpan Obong in Ibiono Ibom and held the traditional title of Akangkang Ibiono until his death in 2003.

He reminisced on the crucial roles played by Effiong at decisive points in Nigerian history, most notably his surrender of the secessionist Biafran Army which ended the bloody three-year civil war in 1970 and restored Nigeria's unity.

Okon also recalled that Effiong and late Chief Tony Anenih were mandated by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to find a political solution to the offshore/onshore oil dichotomy issue, stressing that the solution led to the payment of proper derivation to Akwa Ibom and other states affected by the obnoxious dichotomy.

He commended the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for working hard to ensure peace and security in the state, a feat that has attracted applause from far and near.

Okon supported Eno's call on the Chief of Army Staff to establish an Army battalion in Oron Federal Constituency to checkmate the activities of pirates, militants and kidnappers.

He lauded Lagbaja for bringing the ongoing Chief of Army Staff second and third quarters' conference to Akwa Ibom and urged him to continue to collaborate with the Governor to sustain the prevailing peace and security in the state.

In showing his profound appreciation to the youths of Akwa Ibom State, for maintaining peace in the state and opting out of the ongoing national protest, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, this morning, at a breakfast meeting with youths drawn from the thirty-one local government areas, representatives of the Arewa, Yoruba, Igbo, and Niger Delta communities, the students, labour leaders, market, and other segments, announced plans to hold an engagement forum in the next few weeks to specifically thank them and there, unveil plans to create over 5 thousand jobs for the youths across party lines.

The Governor, who was visibly pleased and elated by the faith and trust the youths have shown in his leadership of the state, announced plans to engage 200 youths from each of the local government areas, 50 from each of the four non-indigene groups, and others where he will engage them further on what efforts the government is making to improve their living conditions and seek their continuous cooperation and support for his administration while unveiling plans to create jobs for over five thousand jobs for them.


“I am indeed very pleased and thankful to the Akwa Ibom youths. What you have done is to energize us more. The responsibility you have placed on our shoulders is huge and we will rise to it, because that’s what you elected us to do.

“If there is leadership, there must be followership and by what you have done, you have exhibited followership and we are deeply grateful.”

A committee to be led by Team Leads across the 31 local government areas, who will each select 200 youths in their respective local government areas for the planned engagement was announced by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah. Over five thousand youths are expected to benefit from this planned job opportunities.

“I expect the Team Leads to lead a very transparent process . I also expect them to come up with a database of unemployed Akwa Ibom youths, so we may engage investors and others who desire to do business with our state and to inform them of the availability of trained manpower across professions and other ranks of artisans.

“We want to touch the lives of our youths, the great Akwa Ibom youths who have remained dedicated and supportive of our determined and avowed efforts to continuously work to improve their welfare. This process is to be carried out across party lines. The youths who listened to our plea not to join the protest are not just members of a particular political party but Akwa Ibom youths, and we appreciate them.”

The committee to arrange this engagement and work out the modalities is led by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, and the Team Leads comprise some members of the State Executive Council, the Senior Special Assistant for Youth Matters and Grassroots Mobilization, some Transition Committee Chairmen, labour, students, non-indigenes groups, traders, among others.

The entirety of the youth groups, who were led to the meeting by the Honourable Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Sir Monday Ebong Uko, heaped praises on the Governor for being a man of peace who, rather than “talking at us, is instead talking to us, engaging us, and assuring us that the government is working hard to make tomorrow better than today,” was the recurring theme of the majority of the speakers.

Led by the SSA on Youth Mobilization and Grassroots Mobilization respectively, Comrades Iniobong Akpan and Aniefiok Iwaudofia, the youths pledged their continuous support to the Governor.

.. sues for enhanced support of government policies

The Senior Special Assistant on Non-Indigenes Affairs to the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Emmanuel Ogbole has called on Non-Indigenes to continuously support the policies of government in order to boost growth and development in the State.

He made this call during an enlarged interactive session with the leaders and stakeholders of the Arewa Community in Akwa Ibom State. The Governor's aide was unequivocal in his praise for the current administration in the State even as he described Pastor Umo Bassey Eno as a de-tribalized leader who has the best interest of all those domiciled in the State at heart, regardless of tribe, religion or political affiliation. He also commended the Governor for the strides he has made so far in the areas of Agriculture, Infrastructural development, Health, Security and Education.

Going further,he thanked the Governor for deeming it fit to accommodate them as non-indigenes with the appointment of some of them as aides in his administration. He went further to pour encomiums on Pastor Umo Eno for inclusivity in governance. He listed the Arise Initiative for the elderly, the sharing of food items and palliatives, their inclusion in government social intervention programmes and the identification of the administration with them in cash and kind during their festivities as part of the reasons to celebrate the Governor for creating an equitable and non-discriminatory environment for all.

"From the interventions he has made so far, through the Arise Compassionate Homes, the subsidy of foodstuffs through the establishment of the Bulk Purchase Agency, the creation of jobs, enhancement of the security apparatus in the State, and even the initiative of giving interest free loans to budding businesses of which the Arewa Community will also benefit from, I can say with all amount of confidence that the Governor has the best interests of the State and its residents at heart.

"Our only obligation as a people is to stand firm in our support for the government because this is undoubtedly a government of the people, for the people and with the people. By cooperating with the government we open channels of collaboration. I want to reiterate that our synergy with today's administration will bear profitable fruits that will benefit, grow and develop us as non-indigenes. So I encourage all of us to welcome government programmes with an open mind knowing very well that it is for our best interest" he said.

He also used the opportunity to introduce the Special Assistant to the Governor on Arewa Community, Alhaji Ibrahim Ilya to the leaders and bestakeholders.

In their separate responses the Sarki Hausawa of Akwa Ibom, Sarki Hassan Sadauki; The Special Assistant to the Governor (Arewa Community), Alhaji Ibrahim Ilya; The Chairman, Arewa Christians in Akwa Ibom State, Apostle Daniel Mako; and The Chief Imam, Uyo Central Mosque, Mallam Bello Dahiru, were united in their thanks to the Governor for his benevolent disposition to their community and pledged their continuous support to his administration.

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has commended the youths of the State for distancing themselves from the nationwide protest thereby maintaining the peaceful ambience of the state throughout the day.

In reciprocity of the gesture, the Governor disclosed plans by his administration to launch a social welfare programme that will provide monthly support for about 5000 youths in the State.

Governor Eno made the declaration during the August edition of the Monthly Covenant Service, at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Uyo, tagged "But They Shall Proceed No Further."

He said by resisting the temptation to join in the protest, Akwa Ibom youths have averted the much anticipated violent outcomes as reported in some other states, and urged them to maintain their resolve throughout the ten days the protest is scheduled for.

The Governor assured that the planned social programme will be unveiled and possibly launched in October 2024, adding that it will accommodate youths yet to be employed across all local government areas in the state.

"Let me start by thanking Akwa Ibom youths. They have done extremely well. Let these words get to them that I am very proud of them. I am proud of them for keeping Akwa Ibom safe. We celebrate all of our youths wherever they are. They did not protest, not because the Police stopped them, but God spoke to them. I am extremely grateful to our youths for understanding that we can dialogue and get all what we want, and that we can work together as a people.

"We will launch a programme that will support about 5000 youths in Akwa Ibom State monthly. It will go round across the entire local government areas. We should be able to support youths that are not employed to have something that will help them, because they have made us proud. This State has always been the home of peace, and you have kept it so. I am proud of you," the Governor declared.

Also commending the peaceful conduct of the Ward Congresses across the State over the weekend, the Governor and leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) in the State, announced the postponement of the Party's Councillorship primaries earlier scheduled to hold today Friday, August 2, to Saturday August 3, 2024, and Chairmanship primaries to hold on Monday.

The shift, he explained was to enable the party put finishing touches that will ensure internal democracy, as he charged stakeholders and leaders of the party to ensure selection of sellable and credible candidates for the elections, restating the resolve of the State to allow a level playing field for all parties that will participate in the general elections.

Gov. Eno however solicited for inclusion of women in the political exercise and urged female folks to see the need to support their own in their quest to occupy public office and ensure that at least four women emerge as councillorship candidates in each LGA.

The General Secretary, Assemblies of God, Nigeria, Reverend Godwin Amaowoh, who delivered a sermon on the theme of the service, culled from 2 Timothy 3:1-9, urged the people to resist the deterioration of the perilous time, asserting that as Akwa Ibom is a State that looks up to God and is led by a servant of God, the people should thrive on godliness and the spirit of God will place a limitation on ungodly men.

Akwa Ibom people have reaffirmed their belief in the Governor Umo Eno led administration, insisting that they will continue to support his ARISE Agenda economic blueprint for the State.

A cross -section of residents told our reporters that instead of joining in the nationwide protest, they felt inclined to heeding the appeal of the Governor for peace and sustainable development.

Although few shops and business premises within the State capital were not opened, other law abiding residents were seen going about their regular activities while the streets were not as busy as other days, but overall, there was peace and tranquility all over the state.

“The Governor has already spoken with the youths and he is addressing their grievances and we believe there is no need for a protest”, Samuel Ibanga James, a phone repairer at the popular Ibom Plaza in Uyo said to reporters.

Governor Eno, had on Wednesday completed the sharing of 48,000 bags of rice and 4,800 bags of garri to 2,282 villages in the State, with each village getting 20years of rice and two bags of garri.

This gesture was also extended to the communities of non indigenes, the security agents and civil society organizations.

Governor Eno on Tuesday had met with leadership drawn from youth groups, Students, Market Associations, labour movement, Civil Society Organizations, traditional fathers and had appealed to all concerned that the State will benefit more in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.


"Let me also emphasize that we are a peaceful State and we have maintained this hard-won peace, over the years.

"We have paid over N22 billion gratuities to the retired Primary School, Local Government and State Civil Service retirees and N50 thousand stipend to the elderly in our ARISE Elderly Care Initiative.

"Our free voucher programme through our Bulk Purchase Agency has so far touched 314, 422 families in the state, the social transfers to the aged, physically challenged, chronically ill, widows has equally impacted and touched over two hundred thousand beneficiaries drawn from the revised Social Register.

"We have also paid wage award for three months to cushion the effect of the high cost of living arising from the removal of fuel subsidy.

"We paid the 13 month salary tagged ’Enomber’ last December and about a month ago, had paid 1.1 billion Naira as bonus to all public service workers to mark the ‘Public Service Week.”, the Governor had said.

The strong presence of the police and other security agents at strategic places was observed across the State. The state is peaceful and the youths have hearkened to the appeal of the Governor not to participate in the planned protest.

The beautiful thing about Akwa Ibom State is that God had decided to bless them with good leaders, and they have come in successive administrations in the State since 1999.

How do we know a good leader? Good leadership reflects in the policies and programmes of the administration especially, when they are targeted at the well-being and prosperity of the people. These are often more pronounced in the projects envision for the people. Most times, these projects meet the bricks through unnecessary criticisms from a segment of the society.

Today, Akwa Ibom State can pride itself as becoming the destination of choice in Nigeria, and indeed, the world. But which of these projects by different administrations did people not criticize? Therefore, Governor Umo Eno will not be an exception, but that cannot deter him from carrying out the bright vision for his people.

That is why the criticism of plans by the Akwa Ibom State Government to build a 19 storey ultra modern commercial tower to replace the old and dilapidated Governor's Lodge in Lagos , Nigeria's economic nerve centre need not give anyone a sleepless night. If anything, Akwa Ibom State should even rejoice because every criticism of government project in the State often signals that such will turn out to be a game-changer for the State and the people.

Indeed, there has been no worthwhile development effort of government of the State that has ever been spared the arrows of blind shooters who often put the cart before the horse, being blinded by pettiness and other mundane impediments that they allow to put a wedge between them and the development and prosperity of the people people.

It has been a long list criticisms and condemnation for projects carefully planned and clinically executed by the different governments of the State. But the good thing is that they have always taken the path of tragi-comedy. In the end, Akwa Ibom State wins. In the end, Akwa Ibom smiles and prospers.

When Arc Obong Victor Attah came on board in 1999, he had lofty plans for the State. When he started to embark on such projects and investments like Econet, airport, Le Meridian, plaza and others, some people described such projects as white elephant and misplaced priority. For instance, they said Akwa Ibom State does not need an airport since there were airports in Calabar and Port Harcourt (Might be Rivers State should not have also built the one in Port Harcourt because there was one in Enugu).

They also said embarking on the Le Meridian Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort will make Akwa Ibom State to have prostitutes. One wonders whether those cities with prostitutes built a hotel for them.

But today, the airport people criticized is now the toast of the aviation sector, and redirecting the world to Akwa Ibom State. The same thing with the hotel, now Ibom Icon hotel where every event in the country is being hosted. If Attah bowed to pressure and jettisoned the idea, what would have been our fate today?

Fast forward to the time of Senator Godswill Akpabio as governor of Akwa Ibom State. They also criticized the plan to build a stadium. Today, that is the only stadium in Nigeria that has met FIFA standard to host matches in Nigeria. That is the power of vision over emotions.

Did they not also condemn the building of Government House? Not even mention the Tropicana Entertainment Centre and others. But Akpabio saw a greater picture ahead, and went ahead to do his best for his people.

Just recently, the administration of Mr Udom Emmanuel came under fire for the vision of Ibom Air. They said it will be a waste, and all of that. The same set of people who often resort to protesting government plans, ostensibly from the pains of losing election by those they supported. But today, Ibom Air has hoisted Akwa Ibom State on the firmament of greatness and prosperity.

Ibom Air is now the most preferred airline by air travellers, and the same people who condemned it are enjoying its services and sharing in the glory of the story because they are from Akwa Ibom State.

Of course they also criticized the 21 storey smart building, International Christian Worship Centre and even the expansion works on the Airport road, now Udom Emmanuel Boulevard among others.

Thus, the condemnation and criticism of the proposed building of the Ibom Tower in Lagos by the Governor Umo Eno administration is a jingle from a familiar bell. The cockrel will not crow three times before they fizzle out. One cannot stop the power of vision.

Governor Umo Eno has a great vision for Akwa Ibom State to play a prominent role in the real estate investment in Nigeria which one is safe to say has its capital in Lagos, as the economic capaciital of Nigeria.

With its growing population, rapid urbanization and flourishing economy, Lagos is the best place to invest in real estate business, and Governor Umo Eno has seen ahead. It is good that the governor has taken the bull by the horn, planned to prepare Akwa Ibom State for the future of abundance through the expected income from the investment. Is that what people should condemn? There are some things we do, and just inadvertently give ourselves out; this is one of them. Why do we weep for prosperity and foresight? And we should not be termed enemy of progress?

The real estate market is a money spinner for the investors and residential real estate holds even greater prospects. Akwa Ibom people should be grateful that the governor is putting the State on the front seat of this emerging opportunity. Or would Akwa Ibom had preferred to lose the golden opportunity today and lament in the future? Penny wise and pounds foolish, you would agree!

If we have seen a leader that is taking us from the flanks into the midfield of economic viability, let us celebrate him and grab the opportunity with both hands.

This feigned story of hunger at home does not hold water. Everyone knows Governor Eno is an advocate of the downtrodden. He has done that in different ways. He has given the vulnerable food and shelter. What else is expected if not to also invest in their future, and the opportunity beckons!

The intention of government is to tap into the ever growing real estate business environment of Lagos so that when the investment matures, government will have where to fall back on and complement statutory allocations and deploy same into bettering the lots of the people.

Whoever is against this is equally standing on the progress of the people. Judas did not talk about the cost of the oil because he loved the poor, it was for his selfish reasons. That is not different from what is happening in Akwa Ibom today.

But the beautiful thing is that Akwa is blessed to have a leader who is focused and never deterred. He cannot be discouraged by the call of those criticizing the building of Ibom Towers in Lagos? Since the days of the founding fathers, what have they not criticized? Yet, they have lived in that same Lagos since graduation from the university. Who is fooling who?

Is attacking the Akwa Ibom State Government's plan to develop a 19-story ultra-modern commercial tower to replace the old, dilapidated, and moribund Governor's Lodge on Bishop Aboyade Cole Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, not akin to calling for the crucifixion of the same messiah who turned water into wine and performed other miracles to help the same people who supplied nails to the carpenters?

Curiously, despite the obvious foresight of Governor Umo Eno on the project, a handful are bent on bending a golden idea. They have struggled to dampen the vision by painting it, albeit ignorantly or mischievously, with a tar brush.

But no matter what strategy is deployed to stand truth on its head or attempting to misinform the people, truth never succumbs to mischief.

The truth about the 19-story ultra-modern commercial Ibom Tower is that Governor Umo Eno has discovered another effective means to launch Akwa Ibom State into the big league of investment for the future. That is the real estate business, and there could not have been a better place to do it than Lagos and Abuja.

In Nigeria, the real estate market is anticipated to achieve a value of US$2.42tn by 2024. Among the various segments within the market, the commercial segment gives the highest yield in terms of revenue, and Lagos remains the biggest destination for such investments with a GDP of $102,000. Akwa Ibom's GDP stands at $19,000. Over the period of 2024-2029, the market is expected to exhibit a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.7%, resulting in a market volume of US$3.41tn by 2029.

When compared globally, the United States is projected to generate the highest value in the real estate market sector, amounting to US$132.0tn in 2024, with New York, Chicago, and Washington DC recorded as prime spots.

Amazingly, the real estate market in Nigeria is experiencing a surge in demand for luxury apartments in major cities such as Lagos and Abuja. First of all, Akwa Ibom State is very lucky to have a property in such a choice area. In fact, allowing the property to rot further or lay fallow should even be what the people should crucify the government for, not the other way around.

Except there is another definition of foresight and vision, this unpopular song of condemning the government's decision on the investment could be pleasant to the ears. But looking at the prospects of the project, anyone who loves Akwa Ibom State cannot even hum that song, let alone sing it. The lyrics are retrogressive, and Akwa Ibom State has since covered many miles forward.

The truth is, real estate is the best investment, and Lagos is an excellent destination.

The real estate business is more pronounced in Lagos because it is the economic powerhouse of Nigeria with prospects from the diplomatic community and multinational companies coupled with its advantage of population. Or have they also forgotten that Lagos is a former capital of Nigeria?

With its growing population, rapid urbanization, and flourishing economy, Lagos has become a hotbed of real estate activity. Is that a location anyone should think twice before investing in?

Understanding the prevailing trends in Lagos real estate is germane for smart investors and homebuyers. High-net-worth individuals and international investors are flocking to the city, driving the demand for upscale properties like Governor projects for the Ibom Tower. For instance, a 4-bedroom terrace home in nearby Eko Atlantic City costs as much as $15M USD or about N2.5B, with a square meter of land costing at least $2,500. Rents in highbrow Victoria Island return huge USD.

Therefore, when completed, the Ibom Tower will boost the State's revenue, with the desire to attain financial stability and not perpetually depend solely on monthly allocations from the federation account.

Better still, this is even to come from the transformation of a dormant asset of the State. Whoever loves Akwa Ibom State will not wage war against the idea of fixing a property at Victoria Island in Lagos with prospects.

The faint argument is that the money should have been used to feed the people of the State. Where on earth does manna fall forever? Governor Umo Eno has shown compassion and care for the vulnerable in the State since assuming office. From building the ARISE compassionate homes for the homeless to giving food to vulnerable persons on the social register; from donating free houses to public servants to the development of Ewet Luxury Gardens, Governor Eno is a responsive and responsible leader who, through his bottom-up approach, is attending to the housing needs of all strata while spreading development in education, healthcare, roads, and youth development across the State.

To sustain and guarantee this tempo of growth, he also needs to get the revenue to support the State in the future. That necessitates the investment in the real estate business in Lagos.

Good enough, the Ibom Tower is going to be developed through the public-private partnership model, which is a modern way of investing in business such that it does not bite hard on governance. Are we not even supposed to hail Governor Umo Eno for this? Why do we crucify the same Jesus that turned water into wine?

No doubt, Akwa Ibom State is used to seeing some persons apply for popularity through condemning government projects well-intentioned for the State. Obong Victor Attah got his share in the Econet Investment, Ibom Airport, Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort, and the Plaza projects. Chief Godswill Akpabio had his in the new Government House, Ibom Tropicana, GOA International Stadium, and Tropicana. Mr. Udom Emmanuel was visited in the 21-story building, International Worship Centre, and even the expansion of Airport Road. But today, the same people are either hailing those initiatives and projects or are benefitting from them.

In fact, those projects are giving Akwa Ibom State the brand that it has become today. Yet, they were opposed at conception.

That is also how the vision of the proposed development of the Ibom Tower will be celebrated in a few years' time. In fact, one is safe to say that any project proposed by the Akwa Ibom State government that is not resisted by a negligible fraction of the people should be discontinued. But when these mercenary complainants justify their commercialized conscience, then the project should be continued. That means it will be a great investment for Akwa Ibom State.

The 19-story ultra-modern commercial tower, Ibom Tower, planned to replace the old, dilapidated, and moribund Governor's Lodge at Victoria Island in Lagos will be a money-spinner for Akwa Ibom State. It is a great idea, well thought-out by Governor Umo Eno.

May the blessings associated with this foresighted investment by Governor Umo be sufficient unto Akwa Ibom State, and may God's wisdom continue to guide the governor of the people aright! That is the benediction.

Is there anything yet that has not been said about the proposed 19-story ultra-modern commercial tower by the Government of Akwa Ibom State? If there is none, can we take the benediction, share the grace and allow the governor to concentrate on developing ? Akwa Ibom State and making strategic investments! Accuse Otuekong Raphael Bassey, Mark Esset Of Turning LGA To Their Personal Property

As PDP State Chairman Assures Of Justice For All

Ahead the October local government election in Akwa Ibom State, the people of Ibiaikot Central (Zone A) have raised alarm over what they described as plot by the political leadership of the local government area in conjunction with the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) to deny them of their right to produce the next chairman of Nsit Atai Local Government Area.

They made their grievances known recently when they staged a protest at the State Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic party.

Armed with different placards some of which read: "Nsit Atai belongs to everybody. It is not the personal property of Otuekong Raphael Bassey and Mark Esset", "Ibiaikot Central (Zone A) is the only zone in Ibiaikot without any elected office in Nsit Atai. We deserve chairmanship in 2024", "Ibiaikot Central has been marginalized for 25 years without any elected office in Nsit Atai", among others, the protesters who numbered over 100 insisted that it is the turn of Ibiaikot Central (Zone A) to produce the next chairman of the local government.

According to their protest letter endorsed by Engr. Ubong Obot and Hon. Victor Etim, they expressed sadness that their zone has been perpetually left in the cold since 1999, a development they said, is not in sync with justice, fairness and inclusiveness.

To further buttress their position, they explained that "In 1999, Otuekong Raphael Bassey from “Ibiaikot Zone B” (Essien Itiaba) with seven (7) recognized Villages was elected Chairman of Nsit Atai Local Government Area. There are two wards in Essien Itiaba (Wards 4 & 5).

"In 2011, Elder Mark Esset from Ibiaikot Zone “C” (Ibiaikot Atai) with six (6) Villages was appointed Transition Chairman.

"In 2012, Elder Mark Esset from the same Ibiaikot Zone C was elected Chairman of Nsit Atai Local Government from ward 9.

Leaving Ibiaikot Central (Zone A) being the only zone yet to have a taste of any political office in the area, they argued strongly that it is their turn to produce the next chairman of Nsit Atai Local Government Area for the sake of equity, fairness and justice.

According to them, "In 2024, the Local Government Chairmanship which is the turn of Ibiaikot again is supposed to move to “Ibiaikot Zone A” with six (6) recognized Villages and two (2) major political Wards (Wards 3 & 10). These two Wards have NEVER produced Local Government Chairman before from 1999 to date. Denying this zone the Chairmanship this time around will completely marginalize the entire community for another 25 years making 50 years."

They appealed to Governor Umo Eno who is an advocate of zoning to wage into the matter and ensure that justice is done in the matter.

Speaking on behalf of the protesting Ibiaikot Central Zone-A, Barr. Imo Udofia noted that the people of the area are demanding for justice hence their reason for staging a protest at the PDP Secretariat. "We want justice for Ibiaikot Central (Zone A). We appeal to our Governor to step into the matter and help us achieve our objective," he said.

Responding to the group, the Chairman of PDP in the state, Elder Aniekan Akpan promised that the party stands for justice, assuring that the party will do justice to their zone.

He assured that he will take their position to the state Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, noting that the governor who is the leader of the party will look at Nsit Atai and make things right.

Elder Akpan said that the party will be fair to all, while ensuring that zones that have never produced elected office will be considered in order to engender peace in the local government, among all zones and groups.

In a laudable gesture, Goodwealth Bassey, the Personal Assistant to the Governor on New Media, has embarked on a humanitarian project aimed at empowering rural women in the state.

The Governor's aide has pledged to provide a bi-monthly stipend of N20,000 to support the women's economic and social development.

This initiative which is inline with the ARISE Agenda of the Pastor Umo Eno led administration is expected to alleviate the financial burdens of rural women, cushion the effect of the scourging economy, enable them to improve their livelihoods, and contribute to the growth of their communities.

Bassey's commitment to the welfare of rural women aligns with the administration's focus on gender equality and rural development.

The stipend will be disbursed on a regular basis to ensure consistency and sustainability.

This support will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the lives of rural women, enabling them to access basic necessities and invest in income-generating activities.

The adoption was made after a screening committee report presented by Elder Enefiok Udoh, secretary of the committee, recommended Michael Okon Asuquo as the most suitable candidate for the position.

According to the report, "After critically analyzing the criteria and assessing the aspirants, the committee recommends Mr. Michael Okon Asuquo for consideration as the councillorship candidate representing PDP in Eastern Ward 3." The report further stated that "At the end of the voting, Mr. Michael Okon Asuquo scored six (6) votes, while Mr. Hope Ikpe Daniel scored two (2) votes, and Miss Aniebiet Edem John scored one (1) vote."

The screening committee's recommendation was unanimously accepted by the stakeholders, elders, and leadership of the party present at the meeting, which was held at the residence of Elder Eyibio Okpoho, Chairman of the Elders Forum of Ward 3.

The motion to accept the report was moved by Mr. James Akpaso and seconded by Imaobong Asukwo, the Personal Assistant (Ward) to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State.

In his acceptance speech, Asuquo thanked the party, stakeholders, elders, youths, and women for their support, promising to work for the interest of the ward and align his activities with the ARISE Agenda of the Governor Umo Eno-led administration.

Dr. Iniobong Essien, the leader of the ward and Board Chairman of the Ibom Airport Development Company Limited (IADC), commended Governor Umo Eno for upholding zoning across the state, noting that it has been a cardinal reason for the peace enjoyed in the ward.

"As a ward, we have kept to the tenets of zoning, and it has been one of the cardinal reasons for the peace we are enjoying," Dr. Essien said. "I thank Governor Umo Eno for staying true to his words and adopting a democratic approach ahead of the Local Government Council elections."

Dr. Essien also appealed to other aspirants to show sportsmanship and support the sole candidate, Mr. Michael Okon Asuquo, who scored six votes out of a total of nine.

"I urge Mr. Asuquo to be magnanimous in victory and carry other contenders along in his programs," he said.

Lady Iniobong Akpakpan, Vice Chairman of the Ibiono Ibom Transition Committee, applauded Governor Umo Eno for mandating that zoning be followed judiciously in the quest to elect leaders. She also thanked Dr. Essien for following a democratic approach to pick a sole candidate and ensuring that the right thing was done.

Stakeholders, elders, youth, and women leaders in their goodwill messages praised Governor Umo Eno for giving power to the people at the grassroots to decide who should represent them, describing it as unprecedented.

The meeting was well-attended by stakeholders, elders, youth, and women leaders of the ward, including Mrs. Esther Royal Inyang, former Permanent Secretary, and Hon. Essien Nyong, former Councillor, among others.
