Art, Graphics & Video / Benin Bronze: 'looted' Benin Sculpture Returned By University by EdoDefence: 3:31pm On Oct 30, 2021

A sculpture was handed back to Nigeria by the University of Aberdeen on Thursday after its "extremely immoral" acquisition.

The "priceless" bronze is described as having been looted by British soldiers in Benin City in 1897.

Depicting an Oba (king) of Benin, it was acquired by the university in 1957 at an auction.

The university approved repatriation in March, and a handover ceremony took place on Thursday evening.

Thousands of sculptures and carvings were removed during the destruction of Benin City in present-day Nigeria.

Many ended up being sold to museums or private collectors.

A panel unanimously recommended its return to Nigeria, and the university's governing body supported the move.

A delegation has travelled to Aberdeen to officially receive the sculpture.

His Royal Majesty, Oba of Benin, Omo N'Oba N'Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, said: "Much has been said about the significance of heritage art and, in spite of the occasional attempts in some quarters to downplay their cultural and religious relevance, these works are often imbued with the spirit of the people from whom they were taken.

"We thank the University of Aberdeen for this noble act of returning our bronze work.

"We hope that other institutions worldwide will see the injustice when they insist on holding on to items which in fact should be a reminder to them of the great injustice that was inflicted on a people so far away and so long ago."

Benin bronzes have become "important symbols of injustice" over the last 40 years, according to Prof George Boyne, the university's principal and vice-chancellor.

"It would not have been right to have retained an item of such great cultural significance that was acquired in such reprehensible circumstances", he said.

Prof Boyne added that the university had taken a proactive approach to return the bronze.

Neil Curtis, head of museums and special collections for the university, said a review of the collections identified the Head of an Oba as having been acquired in a way now consider to have been "extremely immoral".

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: The Ọkhọkhọ: Cambridge's Jesus College Returns Benin Artefact by EdoDefence: 3:24pm On Oct 30, 2021
NemoDatQuod:
First off, maximum respect to the people of the great Benin Empire for having the skill, discipline and ingenuity to produce this incredible and delicately designed work of art nearly two hundred years ago. But what happened to that skillset from long ago? Is there a way to resuscitate it so we can once more enjoy such incredible works including the attendant revenue?

Most importantly, methinks this is not the time to return anything of serious value to any part of Nigeria. As the Economist magazine rightly put it, Nigeria is not just a crime scene, it is an unfolding crime scene. Five years from now (if that long) we shall look for these artefacts and they will be nowhere to be found. Is it not better to leave these beautiful works of art in the care and safe keeping of societies where human beings live, instead of returning them to an unfolding crime scene bedevilled by unabated criminality and corruption? We shall live to rue the day we accepted these art works back into Nigeria. Let the West publicly acknowledge Nigeria's ownership of these artworks. Then let them keep them and continue to display them safely in their museums and schools. Present day Nigeria is not worthy of such beauty of ingenuity.

Have no fear about the safety, the Benin nation is more than ready to defend it.

This is a very good time for Chad to invade Nigeria again.
If you know you know.
The contraption is at its weakest.

Nigeria have to set one as a priority, is it to chase shadows trying to keep Biafra OR risk losing most Northern ancient trade routes to Chad and Cameroon?

Lol I thought you were more strategic than this. Do you think Cameroon is ready for a war with even Benin Republic?
The Amabazonia rebels have been defeating them for a while now, a war with Nigeria will not only mean an immediate victory for the Amabazonias but an immediate loss of territories to the Nigerian government.

Politically Chad is not even currently stable.

Well I want to believe you only typed that so that with Chadian soldiers in Nigeria the Nigerian military will be stretched further thin so your ESN brothers can have an advantage, not bad though.

I saw Kanu's pictures in court and was like what a....
The chap seems too relaxed and confident unlike the image we saw when he was abducted. Also, what of the watery charges filed against him by the government and that got me thinking. Could it be that they already offered Kanu a new deal to stop agitating? According to Kanu, during his first incarceration, they offered him the 5 Igbo states which he turned down. For the sake of all Igbo, I hope the deal if any includes all Igbo in Benue, Cross Rivers, Delta, Kogi, Rivers, Bayelsa and Edo. Anything less is not good enough.

Okay, lets assume there is no deal, will Igbo stop agitating? I serious doubt that. Perhaps, it was possible to pacify the Ndigbo 3-4 years ago, but today, the anti-Nigeria sentiments run really deep that I doubt that even if Nigeria turns around to create a level playing field for all by:

Abolishing quota system which demands that an Igbo child scores 168 while Fulani needs a score of 2 to qualify in an exam.
Making Eastern ports operational so that an Igbo wouldn't have to go to Lagos to clear their imports instead of Calabar or Onne.
Ensuring that a bright Igbo army general is not retired just for a less qualified junior to become Chief of Army Staff
Giving every tribe access to control their natural resources
Removing nepotism by allowing the brightest candidates Moghalu or Obi unhindered access to presidency instead of the usual corrupt business as usual politicians.

I still doubt that up to 10% of Ndigbo would opt for Nigeria, considering the ever present threat of a Jihad with its terrorism against native tribes. You see, the agitation runs deep in that excising the one tribe bent on eliminating all others may well be the solution. And that, we all know is impossible. You see why Ndigbo are solidly behind Kanu and speaking with one voice.

Igbo are just like US Rangers or Marines. Onye aghala nwanne ya. "No one gets left behind."

We Do Not Abandon Our Own! Especially, when he is fighting for us.

Dude, we should be careful what we post online. The OP was seriously wrong. Oba Adolo reigned from 1848 to 1888.
Oba Osemwende (1816-1848) was father of Oba Adolo.

The first real action of Oba Osemwende was the punitive action against Akure for rebellion in 1818.

Oba Ogbebo reigned in 1816 only and before him from 1804-1816 Oba Obanosa reigned. Only Oba Obanosa or Oba Akengbuda (1750 -1804) would have realistically possibly have had to repel Dan Fodio's jihadists considering that Fodio died in 1817.

Fodio wasn't even personally fighting in the last years of his life, if I remember his history correctly. Oba Ozolua historically had to repel Idah people from invading what is today called Edo North and Oba Esigie after him.

As 2023 draws closer MiddleBelt, South West and South South/Niger Delta are ready to defend ourselves if the need arises?

No need to ask if the South East is ready to defend itself because it is very clear they are more than ready to do that.

To defend yourselves is not a day's job or week's job, it takes months of logistics and planning and South East has succeeded in doing that and their Army keeps learning everyday and gaining more combat experience.

SS, MB and SW need to wake up.

Not many might know this; but as always, history always has a good way of reminding us that even in some of our most darkest times, some certain conditions can cause the rise of some uncertain and unlikely heroes to come to the rescue of people whom are being oppressed by an Oppressive force.

Not many might know who Usman Dan Fodio is, but for those who may not know about the man in question; Usman Dan Fodio (born on 15th December 154, Gobir - died 20 April 1817, Sokoto) was a renowned Fulani scholar, religious teacher, military leader, Revolutionary, Promoter of Sunni Islam and the core founder of the Sokoto Caliphate in Nigeria.

Not too many may know why this man's name rings a bell, but the few who know him can bear witness to the fact that he was indeed a great Warrior.

But according to historical records, Usman Dan Fodio was responsible for the fall of many empires in Old Nigeria; he was the one who put an end to the reigns of the Hausa Kings of Northern Nigeria; and he was also the reason why the mighty Oyo Empire fell.

Now when this man was done with carrying out a successful jihad in some parts of the Northern and the Western part of the country, he shifted his attention down to East.

BUT ONE OBA OF BENIN, PUT AN END TO THE RAGING ARMY OF USMAN DAN FODIO AND THAT OBA WAS NONE OTHER THAN OBA ESIGIE OF BENIN

This Oba (According to Historical sources) was recorded to have mobilized a massive army to face the invading Fulani Army of Usman Dan Fodio, even so that he was successful in the Battle that took place.

Many historians argue that Oba Esigie of Benin was the reason why Usman Dan Fodio's jihad was not successful in the Eastern part of the country.

It's important to note that some historians argue that if the Oba Esigie's army was defeated in the Battle he fought against the Fulani Army, Benin would have succumbed to the Jihad and other parts of Igbo land would have followed suit; ranging from the fact that the Igbo communities as of them were not as organized as the Benin Empire whom had a standing army and a well organized monarchy.

We have lived together for ages and share a few similarities. We have enemies which we should put our energy and time into to defend ourselves.

But you see that Ẹdo state, not an inch will be given out to anyone. So it's best we calm down and face our lands and have peace and think of how to make the land more secure and economically more viable.

But if the Ijaw nation deem it necessary to go to war, the Benin nation is more than ready to accept the war. We have been in wars since the BC era, only stopped wars in the 1900s.

If it's war then war it is
If it's anarchy then anarchy it is
