Career › Re: Should I Tell My Younger Brother To Quit His Job ? by EducatedMind369: 1:17pm On Jun 30 |
NassBoy: Let me go straight to the point;
So, my kid brother(26) got a job in an Hotel as it's facility supervisor. When he started(June 1st, 2026) this job, he wasn't given an appointment letter. He was only told that about his operational duties and salary(100k) for the first month, and 120k the next month and subsequently. He started. The next day, he was sent to the market to go procure a few items needed for fumigation. According to him, his Boss(Director) didn't give him the money before he left the hotel, rather, he was told to go to the market and verify the prices of each item and move from shop to shop to ensure a proper bargain for all items before money could be sent. The long and short is, the Boss is very cruel, hostile, mean and highly inconsiderate. The hotel is less than a year, but the boss had changed four supervisors. My brother demanded to know his working hours and it became a problem. How can u employ someone and you want him to work 24/7 running up and down, not even a sleep at night is possible because my brother must Ensure that the hotel never has a blackout. There's inverter, NEPA and Gen. But he never allows Gen to be ON and he discourages the use of NEPA except to charge the inverters' batteries. There's energy Consumption report to be compiled and sent every morning, do room checks too, do technical jobs, supervise cleaning, ensure security of the hotel, etc . My brother said doing all these isn't the problem, but the insults to all his staff. He insults even management staff in the presence of their subordinates, the man is never satisfied with anyone. He doesn't even listen to the customers complaints . He doesn't avail my brother time to go home. No off days whatsoever. The man can call my brothers phone more than ten times in a day, no time he doesn't yell. My brother is now sick of malaria, yet, won't be allowed to rest. He has not asked him about his health for once. How can someone be working for you, and you can't give me a day off or tell him his closing time. My brother also cleans and maintains the swimming pool. The hotel has never had a manager. Most painful is, my brother has no place to sleep in that hotel. If he sees any free place at night, he will just sleep exposed to Cold and Mosquitoes. It's sad because if our parents were to be alive, this wouldn't be happening. My brother has emaciated so badly. Everyday he spends nothing less than 3k on feeding cos they don't feed him at the hotel The zakai hotel at oshodi? |

Gerrard59: The way you write this, random person go read am and think say I get sense.
I have nothing against people asking questions in the Japan thread (I am not Seun. Nairaland no be my property). I just find it ridiculous for people who want to pursue grad studies in a country where the student is expected to hit the ground running on day one to expect answers so easily in the age of ChatGPT. My time, nothing like ChatGPT o. That said, that stuff works so well. I pity management consultants sha. I knew what I experienced as a graduate student, and I have asked two Nigerian postdocs what it is like to be a postdoc or to get a postdoctoral fellowship directly from Nigeria to Japan. It is pure hard work and a you-know-what-to-do system.
As for your situation, I will recommend getting a job in Nigeria, and if you are within the age range for entry level jobs, apply to them. Yes, having a lower grade does limit folks in applying for jobs, ditto age caps. My friend in school has two degrees (life sciences and engineering) from two universities (he did them concurrently), but has a "strong 2.1" in the life sciences degree and 2.2 in the engineering. Since there are more graduate trainee jobs in engineering than in life sciences, he faces disqualification for most of them. Then, we have stringent immigration rules that have prevented folks like him from getting a visa.
But try to get a job, or if you can, learn some tech skills that can enable you to get a job. Why a job at the moment over a master's in Nigeria? Because nothing beats experience, and you earn an income at the same time. School will always be there, but Trump won't last forever as president. The job will provide a source of income to either learn Spanish (to pursue South American countries), if you can, run visa processes when the time comes. Yes, the path to least resistance is great! It worked for me, otherwise I would have competed with the rest of the world in sourcing for scholarships. Even then, my competitors for scholarships were Chinese, and I defeated them! For this reason, I will always recommend the likes of China, Japan and South Korea. The Korean govt has been championing more international student enrolment. These countries have great universities at a fraction of the tuition fees in Western nations and can be stepping stones to other places/endeavours in life.
So to convince admission committees, you need to show some years of experience, and except you want to target the top universities (they have more scholarships and int'l students), you can undergo a master's in Nigeria. Since funds would be an issue, target first generation federal universities - UNN, UI, UNILAG, ABU etc. Get a distinction and fire at the top universities in those Asian countries. So you do a master's at say, UNN, then another master's at Tohoku University, then a PhD and so on.
As we know, we are in the age of AI and advanced technologies, and mathematics and physics are the bedrock of these emerging technologies. East Asians are naturally good at these subjects. I know the admission path to Japanese universities pretty well. Countless schools would be GLAD to admit you, but might not readily offer you scholarships until they see some grit in you.
p.s. There are more scholarships when you are in the country compared to when you are outside. All but two of the MEXT scholars I have met from Nigeria and other African countries had a first class in their undergrad studies. This corroborated my LinkedIn search before I came to the country. Those two had cognate work experience, and one of them almost had a distinction in his MSc program before coming here for another MSc, then PhD and now a postdoc.
Your issue now is the funds; otherwise, I would have said go for it - apply to those Asian countries. Japan is "cheap" as the yen is in the toilet. Thank you for the advice. I really appreciate it. I need to make a plan now. |

Good morning Gerrard. I've been a keen follower of your posts for years now and I believe you're the right person that'll give the needed input to the issue I have on ground.
So, I'm a recent graduate of Mathematics and I've had thoughts of furthering my education outside the country for some time now, but unfortunately for me, I graduated with a second class lower grade. I know it sucks, but it has happened. My university education was really rushed by my school (name withheld) to the point where I spent two years for a four year course(this actually is real) and as a result, I had little time to adjust myself to a whole new field(university Mathematics is different from secondary maths. We do proofs and little to zero calculations).
But I've always had an aptitude for Mathematics right from secondary school. I'm relearning my entire undergrad Mathematics syllabus, which I'm learning way better compared to when I was in school [remember, I have a knack for Mathematics? Double A's in maths and further mathematics in Waec(never had a further mathematics teacher in secondary school. Learnt it on my own and still made an A in Waec)].
Well, what is the essence of this unnecessary story? Simple. It's to show that I have the aptitude, but unfortunately it didn't reflect in my undergrad grades. People with the good grades will always be looked at first before me.
I take full responsibility for everything, and I'm not giving any excuses. What I need now is a solution.
I'd love to further my studies in Mathematics in a developed country. I'm taking the path of least resistance, a philosophy espoused by your friend Tensa, and I'm not looking towards North America or those popular countries. I've been looking at South America and some Asian countries.
I also forgot to mention that I come from a poor family too. So, self funding any education overseas is out of the equation for me. So, those ptdf, mext, Erasmus scholarships are probably out of reach for me.
My main issue now is how do I prove my competence to admission committees so I can get funding, knowing my grades will be a limiting factor for me? I need a way to prove myself. I was thinking of doing an Msc in Nigeria and graduating with good grades, but honestly I really don't want to school in Nigeria again. And besides, that'll take too much time and immigration laws are changing everyday. I need to be fast.
I've been following that Japanese thread and seeing some people there get funding, has arisen hope in my body. I don't mind learning a new language at this point, or experiencing racism.
So, I've been checking out some Japanese schools, and it's still need to me though. So, I need some time to learn about their process and all. I don't want to ask any questions since you generally frown at people asking questions that can be gotten online or from the thread.
Please, I just want you to help look into my case. Thank you.

Career › I Need Your Opinion. by EducatedMind369(op): 9:47pm On Mar 05 |
Good evening everyone. So, I recently graduated with a second class upper, and I've been trying to come up with some plans for the "future". So, I've been thinking of an alternate path if I don't make it through the usual graduate entry path(my mind works that way. I prepare for the worst case scenario in advance). Now, I visit a lot of Nigerian job sites, and two particular fields have been coming up lately, albeit with poor pay at the entry level, by Nigerian standard.
And these fields: accounting and human resource management (HR). But you see that HR; it tends to get a lot of vacancies though at the entry level, although the lay range is usually between 100k-150k max. Same goes for accounting.
Now, I didn't study accounting in particular, but if I decide to go the ICAN route; will I have to wait till I write all my papers across all levels before I even get an entry level role, or can I get an entry level role with just the foundation level passed? Because my priority is experience. I need experience.
I've done my research and it seems the HR route will give me an entry level role in time, compared to the ICAN route. Both exams cost at least 300k across all levels(total, not factoring in papers that might need to be re-written).
Although, accounting seems more "fun" to me, compared to the HR path, but I'm not one who likes to waste money and time, if I can't get a reward. I don't even know what HR personnel do aside recruiting (I'll still do more research).
Mind you, the pay is poor for both fields at the entry level. Because I don't see how I'm going to survive on 120k-150k per month, including accomodation, transportation, feeding and all. It seems only graduate trainee roles pay well at the entry level in Nigeria.
If I go this route; I'll have to endure these horrible pay for a few years(5 years min) before I even think of getting paid 500k per month.
Or do I just abandon both and do us on any skill set that can earn me dollars while in Nigeria?
I just need some mature inputs. Thanks.

My PC has been having one issue for some time now: Early this year, I changed the motherboard of my computer, after not using it for like 2 years. But when I started using it, the system goes off sometimes when I turn it on. Say for example, if I turn it on now, it can go off after like 1 min later. Sometimes it'll show "corrupt BIOS" or "your operating system is corrupt". I've tried reinstalling windows locally (using the recovery option in settings, and the "keep my files" option), but the issue still dey. Once e start this thing, if I leave am for a long time, and go back to using it, e go work well. I don't know the issue now. pansophist: Good idea, I will do that. Please sir, I know this is a very trivial issue for you, but I just need someone with your soul piercing words, to knock some sense into my head. Issue: Please, elders in the house; I need your advice. I'm an undergraduate, and I met a girl recently who, one thing led to the other; I fell in love with. But the issue here is that there's a man waiting for her after school; who wants to get married to her. She already said she's not interested in marrying him, but the man(31) is too dominant, and always overpowers her voice down. She's 19 by the way. We've had sex, and one thing led to the other; he found out about me. She said she's not interested, but he refused to go away from her life. He got my number, and threatened me with death. The only reason I didn't take the threat serious was because he is a pastor at a local church, and my naive self believed that a pastor will not go diabolic over such a trivial issue. Now, she said she wants to be with me, so I tried texting him today to please, leave us alone. And like always; he threatened me with death again. Truth of the matter is that the girl is kind of naive and not strong minded. She's too soft hearted and that's her weak point. And he's capitalizing on that. You know when someone is subtly manipulating a person using religion; talking about how the holy spirit said she's the one for him. Truth is, I love her so much that I don't want her to end up badly, but I think it's all a waste of time. People need to learn from personal experience instead. Thing is, I just don't know what to do now. I enjoy the benefits I get from her(sex, free food, her company), but on the other hand; I can't continue fighting for her. She needs to learn to stand up for herself. But knowing her kind of person; I don't think she ever will. And that'll be her biggest regret, which is what I'm trying to prevent. I guess I fell In love too deep. Please sir; help me. |

TheBillyonaire: This will be difficult to understand, because these are existential questions that we sincerely believed we have known and overcome. But what if we are wrong and all the information provided to us are carefully curated to program us to exactly how we are conditioned to think?
Our understanding of the Universe and God are programmed information propagated to us from sources outside of our being. All that we know of God and Sciences are 'facts' we learned from others.
I have personally noticed the constructive program logic control system, that mentally guides our dialogue system. We tend to realize that everything we learn today, is building us to the next phase of our knowledge tomorrow. What if there is a programmable logic controller that triggers the next course of mind quest in a step by step approach, guiding us to think exactly how we are guided to think and believe exactly what we are programmed to believe outside the core reality of the true nature of our existence?
I am of the opinion that there is an Absolute Actuator of All that there is, because each time I am confronting myself with a question of an Entity called God, I usually ask myself - Who Created God and it took some years before I could get pass that.
But before then, I was confronted with the nature of Energy and how its very ethos are similar to that of God, and a couple of years after, I was confronted, by myself on the 'Source of Energy' and the 'Cause of the Source of Energy'.
Let me not write too much at this stage, but if you are interested, I can move forward to explain why I think the concept of God as the originator of this particular universe is flawed, and why I think that there is a civilization of people that actually runs universes such as this one. And how this world is basically an Energy Business Empire of some entities who are physically here and now present as humans and why I think this is just one of the very many continental planes of human farms for energy production.
Again, if this might offset your belief system, let me know so we can discontinue immediately and I have no right to air out information that stifles people's levels of consciousness. By requesting for these information, I take it as a permission and consent to proceed. Please proceed. |
