Its no doubt that the Enugu/Professional Campus of the University of Nigeria(UNEC), seems to be a small fraction of Enugu State, No wonder its always Forgotten, and the problems and Challenges of her Members ignored, until its time for another Election!

WHAT IS NOW THE BURNING BUSH AT UNEC: Let's Summarize the Story!
On the 6th of June, 2016, Students of the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, Under the student Union, embarked on a 1-Week Sit at Home/Hostel strike action to protest their displeasure at the Outrageous power situation in the University, especially, with regards to the Broken Down University Generator, which provide power for only 2 HOURS in a day of 24 Hours, a situation which they have managed to endure for a period of 2 Months(the entire semester), and running into Exams.
At the End of the 1 week Industrial action, and Monday morning demonstration, the Student Union and the School Authorities after a closed door dialogue on Monday, 13th June, came to an agreement that;
1. The University would provide a new 1500 KVA generator, Valued at N50 Million.
2. Pending the arrival of the new generator, the works department of the University, in charge of handling the affairs of the generator would increase the duration of power supply to 2hrs 30 mins in a day of 24 hours.

The Student Union accepted this, particularly, after evaluating the recent nature of the nation's declining economy, and as such Called off her Sit at home strike, and announced the commencement of lectures immediately.

On the same night, the generator whose duration has been extended to last for 2hrs 30mins was unexplainably turned off from the first batch of hostels after barely 45 mins by those in charge of it, and moved to serve the other batch of hostels. The reason or expectation for this action has not been known till date.
On the same night, it was gathered that a number of unknown individuals took it upon themselves to protest the event (turning off the gen), and this blind action led to the removal of a number of streetlights, as well as damages to Window glasses of buildings and Some Vehicles, an event which was condemned by all and Sundry, including the Varsity management and the Student Union Government.

Expectedly, the next day, the Management had a brief meeting, which ended in the;
1. Indefinite Closure of the Enugu Campus
2. Unexpected Suspension of the Student Union.

BACK TO PRESENT DAY, THE BURNING BUSH AND WHY WE ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES:
The University management at her last Senate Meeting on Monday, 25th July(42 days later), agreed that
1. The Enugu Campus of the University(which houses about 12,000 students), would commence activities on the 8th of August(2 months after),
2. Each and every student of the Campus would pay a reparation Fee of N10,000( totaling N120 Million), though N10,900 on portal(total: N130,800,000).

The procedure for payment of this fee has begun and the portals has been opened for that.
Now, if this was to happen in an institution in the APC led western states(which can't even happen), the Members and Senators who were elected, not selected, to represent them, would stand up at this time when they are needed by the minority, to SPEAK for them and condemn this Injustice.

An example can be drawn from the recent Crisis at the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU Ile-Ife, which was closed down for sometime over management tussles. The students of the Institution contacted their representative in the senate, and the Senator representing the Constituency, Senator Babajide Omoworare and Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, both of the APC, brought it up in the senate house plenary sessions and the crisis(administrative in nature), was resolved(in less than a week) and the Federal Government gave an order that the University management conduct an election for an Acting Vice Chancellor. The order led to the emergence of a Professor of Pharmacy as the Acting Vice Chancellor and resumption was announced immediately.

If we check properly, in this region(enclosing UNEC, and speaking for UNEC students), we have, representing us, able PDP senators, led by our very own Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who were elected and not selected, to voice out our concerns, oppressions and injustice at the federal level in the house of the senate. Now is the time for our senators to show us that we made the right decision by electing them, for moments like this.

It is unfair and a grave injustice that students of UNEC would be expected to pay a reparation fee of N10,900 under the watchful eyes of our PDP senators, which is just about the school fees of a newly admitted student at the University of Ilorin(N13,800 for medicine), and we say that we are being properly represented.

Having been an active and passionate supporter of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), and haven't had any need to ask anything of them, I would want our senators to justify the trust we place on them in this time of need.

The students of UNEC cannot and should not be used to purchase 2 generators(for Nsukka and Enugu Campus) at N50million each among other items, by charging them a reparation fee totaling in excess of N100 million for damages below N10million while at the same time silencing the student Union by suspending them, so the student would have no voice in matters that concern them. Justice should be done, and if reparation fee be paid, should not exceed N2,000(totalling N20-24 million). We put our trust at this time on our PDP senators to come to the need of the members of their constituency who voted them, in their time of need.

Having been an active supporter of the PDP, we would have no choice but to follow the path of our democrat, and Ex-president Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in tearing our membership cards, if our PDP representatives should fail us at this time of Need.

What is good for the Students of the west is also good for the east
Injustice is injustice irrespective of region, tribe, class or religion.

I see it as a ploy to Favour the north, as their candidates fairly pass post UTME, hence, they would use jamb score to Favour them.

Post UTME Cancelation: Economical or Not?? A critical accessment- Obasi Chinedu and Chigozie Gentle.

Our elected lawmakers and very wise members of the education ministry decried writing double exams - UTME and Post-UTME - before one gets admission to study in our tertiary institutions. A topic worth debating. According to their argument, it will be more ECONOMICAL to write only one. This is due to the amount being collected by the various institution to conduct the said Post UTME Screening examination, and if the examination, is canceled, candidates can save the extra money being spent for registration and logistic activities to cover the screening.

All this is what has happened, in theory, now lets look at the practical aspect, which is currently happening in reality.
They said they have scrapped post-UTME. Universities are obviously no longer writing post UTME exams(which should enable candidate save the money for this) but they are collecting money to screen documents. They will have to use money to look at O'level results(the same, which is usually done at clearance with no charge).

Now, The funnier part is that the same amount they charged when they were writing screening exams is the same they are charging for document screening. What then is the purpose of scrapping post-UTME, and how does it reflect as an Economical savings for the candidates?

Since they are collecting money(which has obviously defeated the purpose for which the cancelation was to achieve, according to the education ministry), why not ask these candidates to come and write the screening exam. It is unarguable that JAMB is not a credible nor reliable examination body, especially with their nature of conducting examination. The level of malpractice in their exam is alarming. There has not been a single year that since inception, that the UME/UTME has passed without issues of malpractice, faulty apparatus or equipments recorded as they move from manual to electronic examination. How can this body now be vested with the sole authority of conducting examinations for admission into credible institutions of higher learning like UNN, UNILAG, UI, OAU, ABU and the likes. Over the Years, it has been observed that candidates who perform well at the UTME examination, actually record extremely poor results at the University's post UTME, and this is a fact that has been proven at different institutions.

REPORT OF THE STUDENT UNION GOVERNMENT UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, ENUGU CAMPUS
On the event that led to the closure of the campus and subsequent suspension of the Union by the School Management
Prior to the election of our administration, the situation of power supply in the university had been quite epileptic. However, we did not hesitate to further bring it into the notice of the school management. The president Comr. Nwankwo Emmanuel actually began negotiations on the matter on the very first meeting he had with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Enugu Campus (Herein after refered to as DVC) on the 25th of April, 2016. He as a father kindly promised that the issue would be addressed before the end of that week. The president, also within the week reported same to the Deputy Director of Works who expressly assured him that the works department had already sent proposals and was awaiting the disbursement of fund to have the issue fixed. The week however passed without any improvements.
On 5th of May, the Executive Council had another meeting with the DVC wherein he assured them that the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (herein after refered to as EEDC) had been duly paid and had agreed to supply light to the students from 7.00pm to 12.00mid-night and 9.00am to 3.00pm daily and that a contract has been signed for the fixing of street lights pending the approval of the Vice-Chancellor, alongside other resolutions which we cannot enumerate here for want of space. Afterwards, we proceeded to announce the outcomes to the students who happily welcomed it but would latter get pissed off when they could not see any of them being implemented.
Within this period, the situation was becoming so unbearable that the students began to show signs of intention to protest. We sincerely perceived the impending aggravation escalating as the students often hauled stones, booing and jeering at us whenever we went to address them.
At this very point, we felt it was high time we wrote directly to the Vice-Chancellor (herein after, the VC).
Hence on the 19th May, 2016, we sent him a letter titled, “State of Emergency” which is herein attached, but unfortunately, the letter was not replied.
The height of the students' grievances could clearly be evidenced when the students, on the 22nd May, 2016 lashed back on the Director of Welfare while we were trying to prevent them from rushing out of hostel for a protest.
We quickly brought the envisaged protest to the notice of the DVC, Associate Dean of Student Affairs, and the Security Department in meetings held on 23rd May, 2016 in their respective offices. We did not just stop at this but also proceeded to notify the Dean Student Affairs, UNN and the Chairman of Students Welfare and Disciplinary Committee.
The Associate Dean, on seeing the injury, assisted by making a call in our presence. by the following day work was commenced for reparation of the 500KVA generator. On the 27th, there was a total blackout and the DVC summoned an emergency meeting on the 28th of May. There, we were asked to go and inform the students that the generators could no longer work and that the 800KVA had spoilt beyond repair and that the 500KVA would be fixed on or before Tuesday, 31st May, 2016.
However, in the attempt to report the situation to the students, they, in their usual manner turned daft ears on us and hauled stones on us. We reported this again to the appropriate authorities.
On Tuesday, the generator was powered but could only provide light for about 1 hour before it broke down again. I nonetheless had fowarded a text to the VC that same day, explaining the situation at hand but he did not reply.
On Wednesday, the school returned to its dark enclaves.
On Thursday, 2nd of June 2016, another meeting was summoned wherein we were instructed to inform the students that there would be no light till Saturday.
It is also appropriate at this juncture to report that the students within this period had started confronting the SUG officials. Evidently, the speaker of the Union was obstructed on his way to a sitting on that same day and was prevented from using his official room on grounds that he was “Mr-Speaker-for-Mouth”. Some others testified that they were at various times ridiculed or even threatened that a time would come when they would no longer be allowed into the classroom areas.
In the bid to address the surging tension, we chose to call an emergency Joint Consultative Council (JCC) meeting which held on the 5th June, 2016. This meeting comprised of the three arms of the Students Union Government, Council of Hall Governors, Faculty and Departmental presidents, presidents of fellowships and class representatives. After due consideration, we in the bid to avert the impending protest agreed to embark on a one-week sit-at-home lecture boycott. This we intended would also afford the university management a reasonable time to fix up the light challenge.
When this was announced, it was expressly applauded by both students and lecturers alike, stating that it was the most reasonable decision ever taken by S.U.G. UNEC.
Unfortunately though, some members of the school management did not really appreciate it. They seemed to see the SUG officials as the “bad eggs”. The Deputy Chief Security Officer notified us of his intention to open the classrooms, but after a long discussion with him, we were able to convince him on why we chose to lock up the classrooms.
On Tuesday, we had a meeting with the Student Affairs Department. The Ag. Associate Dean applauded the decision but requested that we put our demands in writing and submit to the appropriate authorities. The letter addressed to the VC afterwards and dated 7th June, 2016 and served on other relevant authorities is herein attached.
On Wednesday, we had another meeting with a representative of the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Olisa Okereke, who agreed to forward our grievances to the Vice-Chancellor on the condition that we would call-off the lecture-boycott on Thursday morning. We however told him that since we were not notified of his coming to the extent that the JCC was not fully represented, we were handicapped and could not take any decision until we consulted other officials. He promised to get back to us on Thursday but he did not until the week ran out.
Notably, we also tried to discuss the issue of internet service (wifi) with him during the meeting, considering the fact that he is the Director of ICT but he promised to invite us on another day for the sole purpose of discussing the ICT. However, we did not take any further step on this since that same evening, the wifi suddenly started working in all the hostels.
On Thursday, we had another meeting with the DVC who told us that the school management would be having a meeting to address our issue on Friday, 10th June 2016 and that he would ensure that our grievances got to the VC. Afterwards, it was resolved that since the school management would be meeting on Friday, the student union should meet as well, such that by Friday evening, we would both exchange our resolutions.
On our part, we summoned an emergency congress which had a quite substantial number of the students in attendance. In our humble capacity the union leaders tried to convince the students on why the boycott should at least be “suspended”. But they however remained resolute that suspension would only come in when the school management has expressly come to a common grounds regarding which of our demands they were willing to grant, and which they were not, including the time limit in which each of the demands would be implemented. They also stated clearly that the union leaders should be ready to face the consequences if we dared call off the boycott without their demands being met. Sincerely, at this point, we, being afraid of facing the wrath of the school management chose to delve into ambiguities. Hence, we did not make it express to the students whether or not we would call off the boycott, but however humbly prayed that the decision of the school management would tilt in our own favour. Meanwhile throughout the weekend, the school management did not forward any report.
Meanwhile, the president had by that day, sent a text message to the VC explaining the state of affairs on campus, the students demands and humbly requesting his immediate response but such text was not replied.
Again, on Saturday, the president tried speaking with the VC over the phone but the efforts yielded no fruits. On the first dial, the vice-chancellor dropped the call and sent him a text that ''he was driving''. Subsequent calls in the evening were however, not answered at all.
He also called the DVC requesting to know the response of the school management after the meeting on Friday. The DVC however told him that he wanted to call another meeting before he finally reports to the SUG. A further call on Sunday attracted the same response.
On this note, the students not knowing their fate kept pressurising until we had to call another emergency JCC meeting in the evening wherein it was resolved that the boycott would continue on Monday with a peaceful protest which expressly involved only “the student leaders”. The students appreciated this and indicated their confidence in their leaders.
The peak of it all was on Monday, 13th June, 2016. The student leaders by 8.00am peacefully marched round the campus with placards expressing the plight of the students. We marched straight into Main Hall where we had a meeting with the DVC and other principal officers of the University. The major resolution in the meeting was that the lecture boycott should be called off. This was reached amicably between the management and the S.U.G. The student leaders proceeded from there to communicate the students at the school gate and as well implement the resolution of the meeting.
After opening the classrooms and making the declaration that lectures would commenceOn Tuesday, 14 june, 2016, we on the instruction of the Ag.Deputy Registrar also posted the same information on-line for quicker access and proceeded to inform the DVC and other appropriate authorities that we had effected the assignment expected of us.
However, shortly afterwards the students in hostels began to chant that we had betrayed, sabotaged, and disappointed them. That we probably had accepted bribe from the school management. Meanwhile in the evening, the school generator came on but lasted only about 40minutes. This, probably stirred the students again and they noisily ran into the streets and began to destroy some school property. Some of the Union leaders who were within reach tried in their various capacities to quell the protest but the angry mob rather lashed back on them.
On Tuesday, the DVC scheduled a meeting with the president but the meeting would not later hold as the president repeatedly called him and he would not pick his calls. It was the Ag. Associate Dean, who finally informed him that the VC was around, that the management was converging for a meeting but that the student representatives were excluded from the meeting.
Finally, about 4.00pm, a circular was pasted at strategic places around the school, stating that the student Union Government, Enugu Campus has been suspended and that the campus has been closed indefinitely.
We also further bring the following to your notice:
That on Tuesday, 14th June, 2016 electric power supply from the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company which barely ever lasted beyond 2 hours suddenly came on from around 8.00am till about 4.00pm.
That the water taps that never gushed out water since this session suddenly started running the same morning.
That we sincerely believe that the Monday, 13th June,2016 (night) protest was instigated by the fact that the generator lasted only about 40minutes that night, instead of the usual 2hours.
That the union leader immediately the protest commenced quickly communicated the appropriate authorities.
That the angry students went after some of the Union leaders they could find and actually beat up one of us, Hon. Nwagbo Christain, who was at the time found sleeping in the president`s room.
That the Union leaders were not represented in the meeting wherein the management took its decision on Tuesday, 14th June,2016, notwithstanding every effort made by the president to be present.
That the SUG as a body do not know anything concerning the protest beyond that stated herein.
That the SUG is however willing to cooperate with the school management in the course of investigation through reporting any further findings that may lead to detecting the actual violators.

@Moderator, I would appreciate if this can get to NL front page as the Authorities of the University are trying to PIN the violence acts on the SUG, instead of their inaction, and probably rusticate innocent student Union Leaders or keep them in court for years while their academic programme is suspended. The exact situation that happened in 2009 in the Nsukka campus. the student leaders never graduated and no one ever knew the story.

Nairaland might be the only way this true story may see the light of the day,and these student could meet well meaning individuals who might fight their cause and get the justice they truly deserve.

The Major Crisis causing factor between students and the Management of many Universities is a "breach in communication".

Now, the Students Union, SUG of these Universities, eg, UNILAG, UNEC, UNIPORT, UI is the solution. They are not the problem.
They are present to solve the problem!

They act as mediators between the Authorities and the Students, in order to remove that " breach in communication" and create a peaceful and positive atmosphere between them..

UNEC Protest: What Actually Happened, The Untold True Story

The Authorities of The University Of Nigeria, following a protest by students of the Enugu Campus of the University on monday, 13th June, has shut down the Campus indefinitely.

The protest, it was gathered, was as a results of the Management's indifference towards the Terrible and pathetic welfare conditions of the students of the Enugu Campus of the University, whom by all indications, are the professional students of the University.

According to information gathered from various sources, the protest has been long coming and had only been doused by intervening actions of the Student Union(SUG), of the University, which at this moment has been suspended over the same crisis.

UNEC STUDENT PROTESTS: THE TRUE STORY
The protest by students of the Enugu campus of the University of Nigeria, came as a results of the Management's Unwillingness to improve the living/welfare conditions of the students to a near manageable standard, particularly in the area of Electricity, coupled with the fast approaching second semester examination.

According to a student, who pleaded anonymity, the Management, have been asked to improve her efforts in tackling the horrendous light situation in the enugu campus, where professional students(of medicine, Nursing, Health sciences, Law, accounting, etc) argued that they only get 2hrs of power supply in 24 hours of the day. This request as we gathered has been sent since early May, by the Students Union, on behalf of the students (when the new Officials of the Student Union succeeded the outgoing one), and has always been an issue of deliberation whenever the management and officials of the Union meet.

The Enugu campus of the University, has 2 generators, a 500KVA generator, and another 800KVA generator, which has been said to be overdue for replacement. These generators according to reports gathered are over 14 year old, and recently, have been breaking down almost every week, as they seem to have overstayed their life span.

Sensing increasing tension among the students, and chatters of an intending protest, especially as the exams are close at hand, with the students largely unprepared due to the unavailability of Light to read, the Student Union intervened by;
1. Going on a Sit at Hostel Strike action, where classrooms were locked and the students remained in their hostel, till the current issue is resolved.
2. Pressed harder on the Authorities to find any means of providing power to the students from 7pm to 12 midnight, so the students can read.
3. Demanded that the exams be shifted to compensate for days lost during the power issue, so the students can be properly prepared for their examination.

This isn't because power is the only crisis the school is having, but because, it is the major crisis capable of causing a protest. It would be gathered that last year(2015), in the same month(june), the University was shut down over the same issue, and in over 1 year, it is quite shameful that history is repeating itself again in the very same way.
The student welfare has been compromised terribly, beyond remedy, in the areas of
1. Water(bought for N30 a keg)
2. light(only 2hrs of light in a day of 24hrs)
3. Overcrowding in hostel rooms(as much as 8-12 in a single room)
4. Internet Service(WIFI), which each student paid N8,000 for.
5. Toilet/Bathroom(terrible to behold)
6. Long grasses around the hostels leading to snake bites, just to mention a few.

Infact, one can say categorically, that the only good thing about UNEC, are the wonderful Lecturers, who are truly student friendly. No doubts, our Vice Chancellor, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba and Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Smart Uchegbu are very student friendly, but with a recurrence of last year's incident over the same issue. A lot of questions need to be asked in that regards.

According to the Campus's Director of works, the only solution to the power crisis in the Campus is a new 1500KVA standalone generator, capable of powering the resources of the campus, without being overloaded, and this, was the suggestion made by the Students Union to the Management, together with the option of moving the Staffs generator and Medical Centre generator to the students use, till the new one is brought, in order to douse the growing tension and for the students to return back to classes.

There were varying amount of Negotiation during the first week of the sit at hostel strike action by the Students Union, an action which was applauded by all and sundry, including the Acting Associate dean of Students Affairs, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, the Secretary to the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Director Of ICT and other members of the negotiating council, as a well thought out and matured way of handling such crisis, the first ever of such action by student leaders. The students demands were made known to the management by Union leaders and the management(represented by the Deputy Vice chancellor), promised to see the Vice chancellor in Nsukka on Friday, 10th June, during a Council meeting and convey the requests.

For one week, there were a lot of deliberations by both parties, which ended with the Leadership of the Student Union calling for a students congress on Friday, 10th, June to reach a concensus with the students. The students voted unanimously to continue the strike till light has been provided from 7-12 midnight. This decision was further upheld in the Joint Consultative Council meeting of the Students Union, comprising of all Faculty and Departmental presidents and officials, as well as fellowship presidents and class reps, and it was further suggested at the meeting that they would hold a peaceful demonstration on monday morning, an action which was carried out to perfection, as not even a fly was killed.

At a point during the demonstration, students wanted to leave the school environment, to head to the National Media and Publicity(NTA Television), and it took the intervention of the Student Union Officials to curtail that and keep them in check, ensuring that the demonstration ended peacefully, an event, that can be confirmed by the Deputy Chief Security Officer(DCSO) of the University.

On this faithful monday, a meeting was scheduled to hold between the Leadership of the Students Union(including members of the JCC), and the University management. The meeting came to an end by past 2pm, after which it was gathered that officials of the students Union were finally comfortable with the proposals of the University Authority, which was conveyed by the Director of ICT, Mr. Olisa who was representing the Vice Chancellor of the University as follows;
1. The University has agreed to purchase a new 1500KVA generator and the process to withdraw the required funds from the TSA is already in progress.
2. The University has agreed to the students demand to modify the Semester Academic calendar.
3. Generator power would be extended to 2hrs 30mins for the 1 week duration the management requested to get the new gen.

With this demands met, the Authorities of the Students Union agreed to call off her strike action, and open the locked classrooms so the students can return back to the classrooms, and the meeting came to an end, with a resolution finally reached.
These information was passed along to the expectant students, but was received with mixed reaction, with majority of the students insisting that its all false promise and that they are not willing to go back to the classroom till they have seen the generator, the students Union officials did their best to convince the aggrieved students to give the management a week to provide the generator as they promised and if after that, it wasn't done, they can then return back to the lecture boycott.


As agreed, the Students Union opened all the locked classrooms, so that lectures and academic activities can commence the following tuesday.


HOW THE NIGHT PROTEST BROKE OUT: According to Information gathered from various sources;
The students were in their hostels that monday night, and the generator lights were on. After less than 45 minutes, the generator was moved to the other hostels(sharing pattern), not lasting up to the promised 2hrs 30 minutes. This action infuriated the students, mainly males, who started turning out one after another, and headed to the generator house, and from there to the SUG officials hostel rooms, looking for the officials with the intent of assaulting, alleging that they(The SUG officials), have collected Money from the Management and decided to withdraw from the struggle.
In this process, the Clerk of the SUG House of Reps, Rt. Hon. Christian was assaulted with an Iron in the back resulting in a serious injury, while other officials ran for their lives, in the dark of the night.

The Campus security officials as well as the Deputy Vice Chancellor were notified in the night by various officials of the Union, reporting the event going on, and they were advised by the authorities to seek a way to leave the hostels.

The protest by students of the Enugu campus of the University of Nigeria, came as a results of the Management's Unwillingness to improve the living/welfare conditions of the students to a near manageable standard, particularly in the area of Electricity, coupled with the fast approaching second semester examination.

According to a student, who pleaded anonymity, the Management, have been asked to improve her efforts in tackling the horrendous light situation in the enugu campus, where professional students(of medicine, Nursing, Health sciences, Law, accounting, etc) argued that they only get 2hrs of power supply in 24 hours of the day. This request as we gathered has been sent since early May, by the Students Union, on behalf of the students (when the new Officials of the Student Union succeeded the outgoing one), and has always been an issue of deliberation whenever the management and officials of the Union meet.

The Enugu campus of the University, has 2 generators, a 500KVA generator, and another 800KVA generator, which has been said to be overdue for replacement. These generators according to reports gathered are over 14 year old, and recently, have been breaking down almost every week, as they seem to have overstayed their life span.

Sensing increasing tension among the students, and chatters of an intending protest, especially as the exams are close at hand, with the students largely unprepared due to the unavailability of Light to read, the Student Union intervened by;
1. Going on a Sit at Hostel Strike action, where classrooms were locked and the students remained in their hostel, till the current issue is resolved.
2. Pressed harder on the Authorities to find any means of providing power to the students from 7pm to 12 midnight, so the students can read.
3. Demanded that the exams be shifted to compensate for days lost during the power issue, so the students can be properly prepared for their examination.

This isn't because power is the only crisis the school is having, but because, it is the major crisis capable of causing a protest. It would be gathered that last year(2015), in the same month(june), the University was shut down over the same issue, and in over 1 year, it is quite shameful that history is repeating itself again in the very same way.
The student welfare has been compromised terribly, beyond remedy, in the areas of
1. Water(bought for N30 a keg)
2. light(only 2hrs of light in a day of 24hrs)
3. Overcrowding in hostel rooms(as much as 8-12 in a single room)
4. Internet Service(WIFI), which each student paid N8,000 for.
5. Toilet/Bathroom(terrible to behold)
6. Long grasses around the hostels leading to snake bites, just to mention a few.

Infact, one can say categorically, that the only good thing about UNEC, are the wonderful Lecturers, who are truly student friendly. No doubts, our Vice Chancellor, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba and Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Smart Uchegbu are very student friendly, but with a recurrence of last year's incident over the same issue. A lot of questions need to be asked in that regards.

According to the Campus's Director of works, the only solution to the power crisis in the Campus is a new 1500KVA standalone generator, capable of powering the resources of the campus, without being overloaded, and this, was the suggestion made by the Students Union to the Management, together with the option of moving the Staffs generator and Medical Centre generator to the students use, till the new one is brought, in order to douse the growing tension and for the students to return back to classes.

There were varying amount of Negotiation during the first week of the sit at hostel strike action by the Students Union, an action which was applauded by all and sundry, including the Acting Associate dean of Students Affairs, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, the Secretary to the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Director Of ICT and other members of the negotiating council, as a well thought out and matured way of handling such crisis, the first ever of such action by student leaders. The students demands were made known to the management by Union leaders and the management(represented by the Deputy Vice chancellor), promised to see the Vice chancellor in Nsukka on Friday, 10th June, during a Council meeting and convey the requests.

For one week, there were a lot of deliberations by both parties, which ended with the Leadership of the Student Union calling for a students congress on Friday, 10th, June to reach a concensus with the students. The students voted unanimously to continue the strike till light has been provided from 7-12 midnight. This decision was further upheld in the Joint Consultative Council meeting of the Students Union, comprising of all Faculty and Departmental presidents and officials, as well as fellowship presidents and class reps, and it was further suggested at the meeting that they would hold a peaceful demonstration on monday morning, an action which was carried out to perfection, as not even a fly was killed.

At a point during the demonstration, students wanted to leave the school environment, to head to the National Media and Publicity(NTA Television), and it took the intervention of the Student Union Officials to curtail that and keep them in check, ensuring that the demonstration ended peacefully, an event, that can be confirmed by the Deputy Chief Security Officer(DCSO) of the University.

On this faithful monday, a meeting was scheduled to hold between the Leadership of the Students Union(including members of the JCC), and the University management. The meeting came to an end by past 2pm, after which it was gathered that officials of the students Union were finally comfortable with the proposals of the University Authority, which was conveyed by the Director of ICT, Mr. Olisa who was representing the Vice Chancellor of the University as follows;
1. The University has agreed to purchase a new 1500KVA generator and the process to withdraw the required funds from the TSA is already in progress.
2. The University has agreed to the students demand to modify the Semester Academic calendar.
3. Generator power would be extended to 2hrs 30mins for the 1 week duration the management requested to get the new gen.

With this demands met, the Authorities of the Students Union agreed to call off her strike action, and open the locked classrooms so the students can return back to the classrooms, and the meeting came to an end, with a resolution finally reached.
These information was passed along to the expectant students, but was received with mixed reaction, with majority of the students insisting that its all false promise and that they are not willing to go back to the classroom till they have seen the generator, the students Union officials did their best to convince the aggrieved students to give the management a week to provide the generator as they promised and if after that, it wasn't done, they can then return back to the lecture boycott.

As agreed, the Students Union opened all the locked classrooms, so that lectures and academic activities can commence the following tuesday.

HOW THE NIGHT PROTEST BROKE OUT: According to Information gathered from various sources;
The students were in their hostels that monday night, and the generator lights were on. After less than 45 minutes, the generator was moved to the other hostels(sharing pattern), not lasting up to the promised 2hrs 30 minutes. This action infuriated the students, mainly males, who started turning out one after another, and headed to the generator house, and from there to the SUG officials hostel rooms, looking for the officials with the intent of assaulting, alleging that they(The SUG officials), have collected Money from the Management and decided to withdraw from the struggle.
In this process, the Clerk of the SUG House of Reps, Rt. Hon. Christian was assaulted with an Iron in the back resulting in a serious injury, while other officials ran for their lives, in the dark of the night.

The Campus security officials as well as the Deputy Vice Chancellor were notified in the night by various officials of the Union, reporting the event going on, and they were advised by the authorities to seek a way to leave the hostels.

reports has it that the Enugu campus of the University is currently hot at the moment with students protesting and bringing down all streets lights and various other structures over the current light issues.

UNEC STUDENTS PROTEST: Outcome of Today's Deliberation With The University Authorities!

Its sad and degrading that at this point in time, the authorities have to employ the mechanics of coercion and passive threats to indulge the students to decline on their demands for better welfare conditions and for them to cowardly retire back to classrooms as indications of Master's action over her slave continues.

Today, at the beginning of the dialogue with the University Authorities, it was assumed that there was a positive atmosphere regarding the response from the Vice Chancellor over the students demand, after the representative of the Vice chancellor, in the person of the director of ICT, Mr. Olisa, informed the students that the Vice Chancellor has agreed her demands for;
1. The procurement of a 1500KVA generator and that process regarding the withdrawal of funds for it has already begun from the TSA.
2. The extension of the examination by @least 2 weeks.
.
However, things took a different turn when the Authorities asked members of the Students Union and JCC present on how they would manage the current working 500KVA generator in school for the whole of UNEC, for the time being till the new generator is gotten, and the Students Union Maintained her stand that till the students see the new generator bought and functioning and till the examination calendar has been extended, it is not feasible that they would return to class to commence any academic activities.

The negotiating authorities, in particular the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Uchegbu from Urban and Regional Planning, changed the tone of dialogue to one of Command and emphasized that he would ensure that the classes opens tomorrow, whether the SUG officials open them or he would ask the security officials to break the keys used to lock them. Also that he would ask the lecturers to come to class whether the students come or not, and that the Students Union call off their strike. Indirectly, they employed the mechanics of coercion and threats of rustication, particularly of the president and other officials when the DVC indicated that some wealthy family could fly their kids abroad, but the kids from the poor families would begin writing JAMB again.
.
This is suggestive that the best the school can give is the same 2 hour light and expect her students to pass with same. It is suggestive that all these promises so far are false and deceptive and only a means to get the students back to class.
.
I believe it is constitutional for UNEC students to know the truth of the matter at hand, and i cannot tell them lies, cos the School authorities asked us to and for them to decide on if they want to go back to class or not and in making this decision, they should stand as one. They should understand that this fight is for their welfare and if they lose this fight, they cannot win again.

Its a time for them to stand up to their demand and to their reputation of being called lions.

The Students Union Government, of the University at her Joint Consultative Council meeting held today, at her secretariat wishes to inform all students of the University, as well as members of the Public that the warning Strike action embarked upon by the union last week has been extended indefinitely till the management of the University yield to the students demand for better welfare conditions which include;
1. 7-12 midnight generator power supply through the provision of a 1500KVA generator
2. Review of the University's academic calendar and adjusting of this semester's examination to make up for the period lost in darkness.

The students of the University, has put forward their demands through their union and have reaffirmed their commitment that until their demands are met, they would not be returning back to the classrooms.

Hence, the Strike action of the Students Union continues till whenever the situation is addressed.

Professional exams, General studies test set to hold today postponed.

The strike action embarked upon by the students of the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, today, entered its 4th day, and all students related activities remain grounded.

Today, the students were able to understand the strength of the power they hold in the University, knowing that there is No University without the students.

The Professional examination for final year students of the Medical Laboratory science, MLS-501 set to hold today, has been postponed, as well as the General studies 202 and 208 tests all set to take place today, till the students call off their strike.

Also, with regards to the 5 demands made by the students, the Hostel WIFI services has been activated in the hostels as requested, and this has been confirmed particularly in the most neglected boys hostels.

Today, the University management, in particular, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the Enugu Campus of the University, invited the Student Union Leaders to the 3rd Negotiation meeting since the strike action began with a hope of reaching a common resolution and the students calling off their strike.

The meeting was attended by the President, Vice president and all members of their executive, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker as well as principal members of the legislature, most Faculty and departmental presidents as well as Hall governors. At the meeting the students Union still maintained the Stand of the students regarding the strike, that only when the issues placed before the management has been tackled would the strike be called off. The students leaders also included a note of caution, that No one should attempt to break the keys used by the student to lock the classrooms as was reported in some lecture halls, which has been locked again. This the DVC promised to discuss with the security department as well as deans of faculties to avoid any vandalization of student Union keys locking lecture halls as the class rooms is the jurisdiction of the students.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor thanked the students leaders, and promised to present the matters of the students to the Vice chancellor as a matter of urgency.

The DVC, after the meeting with the students leaders called an emergency meeting of all committees with regards to the matter at hand and also woukd see the VC as a matter of urgency, regarding calling the examination committee of the University with a view to reviewing the academic calendar and adjusting the examination, to which the student Union demanded 3weeks to 1 month.

The students Union still stand on their demand for;
1. A new generator to power all hostels, including libraries and classrooms, @least 1500KVA
2. Extending lectures and examination by 3 weeks to 1 month
3. Generator light should be from 7pm to 12 midnight.

The meeting came to an end and both parties promised to meet their council and find a way to reach common grounds.

UNEC SUG Students Strike Day 4: Update.-

Professional exams, General studies test set to hold today postponed.

The strike action embarked upon by the students of the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, today, entered its 4th day, and all students related activities remain grounded.
.
Today, the students were able to understand the strength of the power they hold in the University, knowing that there is No University without the students.
.
The Professional examination for final year students of the Medical Laboratory science, MLS-501 set to hold today, has been postponed, as well as the General studies 202 and 208 tests all set to take place today, till the students call off their strike.
.

UNEC SUG Sit At Home Strike: Day 3 Update.

The students Union of the University has still maintained their stance that until a new generator is provided to tackle the issue of power in the University campus, they are not yielding to any pressure to call off their strike.
.
The ongoing Sit at Home/Hostel strike action by the students Union yielded more fruits as it enters its 3rd day. Today, the University management entered its 2nd negotiation with the Student Union, based on her demands that were put forward yesterday. The University has reportedly proposed to buy a new 800KVA generator to add to the 800KVA and 500KVA generator currently in the campus, in order to tackle the power issue. According to the representative of the Vice Chancellor, sent from the Nsukka campus, to negotiate on behalf of the University, at a meeting held today at the ICT block, it would not be possible to provide a new 1500KVA generator as demanded by the students, before next friday, which upon valuation, has been found to cost around 70million in the market. This was attributed to issues in the new TSA regime and difficulty in withdrawing huge amounts.

The Representative suggested that a new 800KVA would be the closest feasible alternative to tackle the current issue and bring an end to the students strike, so normal academic activities can continue.

Also, with regards to the students demand that lecture and examination be moved, he says that, he would head back to the Nsukka campus today, to present the demands and that the University would work to see that the lectures and examination are adjusted to compensate for the hours lost in the period of darkness as well as the strike.

The students Union thanked him and both parties adjourned to meet their respective Consultative council on the decision as they try to reach a common ground.
