Health / Understanding Typhoid Fever : Symptoms, Prevention by Edunews: 4:31pm On Sep 11, 2020
Typhoid fever is caused by Salmonella typhi bacteria. Typhoid fever is rare in industrialized countries. However, it remains a serious health threat in the developing world, especially for children.

Typhoid fever spreads through contaminated food and water or through close contact with someone who's infected. Signs and symptoms usually include a high fever, headache, abdominal pain, and either constipation or diarrhea.

Most people with typhoid fever feel better within a few days of starting antibiotic treatment, although a small number of them may die of complications. Vaccines against typhoid fever are available, but they're only partially effective. Vaccines usually are reserved for those who may be exposed to the disease or are traveling to areas where typhoid fever is common.

Symptoms

Early illness

Fever that starts low and increases daily, possibly reaching as high as 104.9 F (40.5 C)
Headache
Weakness and fatigue
Muscle aches
Sweating
Dry cough
Loss of appetite and weight loss
Abdominal pain
Diarrhea or constipation
Rash
Extremely swollen abdomen

Risk factors

Work in or travel to areas where typhoid fever is established (endemic)
Work as a clinical microbiologist handling Salmonella typhi bacteria
Have close contact with someone who is infected or has recently been infected with typhoid fever
Drink water contaminated by sewage that contains Salmonella typhi

Common complications

Inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis)
Inflammation of the lining of the heart and valves (endocarditis)
Pneumonia
Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
Kidney or bladder infections
Infection and inflammation of the membranes and fluid surrounding your brain and spinal cord (meningitis)
Psychiatric problems, such as delirium, hallucinations and paranoid psychosis

Prevention
Vaccine: Recommended if you live in or you're traveling to areas where the risk of getting typhoid fever is high.

Other prevention
Wash your hands..
Avoid drinking untreated water.
Avoid raw fruits and vegetables.
Choose hot foods.

Treatment

Commonly prescribed antibiotics

Ciprofloxacin (Cipro).
Azithromycin (Zithromax).
Ceftriaxone

Health / Re: Few Signs That Suggest You May Have Breast Cancer by Edunews: 6:42am On Sep 09, 2020
Edunews:
Breast cancer is the commonest cancer in women In Nigeria. A lot of women has died due to complications from breast cancer disease, and a good number of these deaths could have been prevented if only these women were able to be identified/diagnosed early on.

Once a cancer has spread to other organs, there is no stopping it.

Dying from cancer is a very painful way to die. People with this experience a lot of pain, and misery before death comes.

Early detection is the key to survival, hence, we'd be listing a few signs that might indicate you may have breast cancer.

Once you notice any of these signs, please, see a doctor immediately.

1. Breast Lump: a lump is a hard particle, like a stone or bean seed that you can feel when you touch your breast.

A breast lump might mean cancer or might mean some other breast diseases.

2. Size: if you notice a wide difference in size between two of your breasts (like one is like and orange, and the other is like Udara/agbalomo, you should see a doctor.

3. Swelling: any breast swelling with or without pain should be examined.
Please see a doctor.

4. Nipple discharge: especially if it is bloody, please see a doctor.

5. Nipple Retraction: this is as if your nipple is entering inside your breast.

6. Breast Pain: Breast pain could be anything. However, it’s best to take precaution before it turns out to be a serious problem.
See a doctor. Its better safe than sorry.

7. Changes in the skin of your breast. Does the skin around your breast looks like an orange skin?

You should see a doctor immediately.

8. Breast Ulcer: whenever you start noticing ulcers or wounds on your breast.
You should see a doctor immediately.

Advice (s):
- practice breast self-examination every month (use your period time as a reminder to do this). So next time you go into the bathroom, get a mirror and look at those breasts again.

Please, avoid herbal medications advertised to make your breast cancer disappear!!!
These would only make you delay your visit to the hospital, possibly worsening your condition & by the time you would decide to go to the hospital, the cancer would have spread to other organs and at this point, nothing else can be done.

Always See your doctor!!! Prevention is better than cure!!

Health / Re: Understanding Peptic Ulcer: Pain In The Centre Of The Chest by Edunews: 6:41am On Sep 09, 2020
Edunews:
The digestive system helps convert our meals into usable forms for the cells in our body. This is necessary for good health and well-being. When there is an injury or tear to body surfaces lined by cells, it is called an ulcer.

These sores may be found in any part of the digestive system, but the stomach and the duodenum, a part of the small intestine that immediately follows the stomach, are the most commonly affected areas.

What causes peptic ulcer disease?

Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that resides in the stomach of people with peptic ulcer disease is thought to play a huge role in the development of this disease. Typically, the acids produced in the stomach is well controlled and finely balanced but H. pylori cause a loss of this balance. It causes the body to produce excess stomach acid, leading to the erosion of the normal stomach surface cells, causing ulceration. Some other factors, like an excess intake of some painkillers, alcohol, excessive salt intake, and smoking may cause peptic ulcer disease but H. pylori are responsible for a large chunk of all peptic ulcer diseases.

Who gets peptic ulcer disease?
H. pylori, the biggest cause of peptic ulcer is spread via ingestion of contaminated food and water. While many people have had contact with the bacterium, only about a fifth of these individuals develop peptic ulcer disease.

Globally, there is a decrease in the number of people who have peptic ulcer disease.

What are the symptoms of peptic ulcer disease?
The following are symptoms that may be seen in peptic ulcer disease. These symptoms are exclusive to peptic ulcer disease and only a professional can make a diagnosis of peptic ulcer disease. Ulcers may be of different sizes and this

Pain in the centre of the chest. Worse right before or after meals and sometimes causes you to wake up at night.
Nausea and bloating
Belching
Vomiting, which may contain blood
Weight loss
Tiredness
Difficulty in swallowing
Passage of dark coloured stools

How is a diagnosis of peptic ulcer disease made?
Your doctor will interview and examine you to gather information. Thereafter, tests may be ordered to make a diagnosis. These may include blood tests, a breath test, a barium meal or an endoscopy, a procedure where a tube with a camera and lighting is used to visualise the body.

How is peptic ulcer disease treated?
Treatment for peptic ulcer disease is often via prescription medicines (antibiotics and antacids) for a few weeks. Most people are treated successfully with medications.

Repair of the ulcerated part may be done via endoscopy; at the moment it is used to confirm the disease. It is a straightforward procedure and they will discharge you on the same day. There are other surgical options for treatment.

please, stop self-prescribing and abusing pain medications, especially the types like Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Diclofenac, etc.. they are not good for you.

even the paracetamol you take daily can damage your liver. you need to understand that drugs can be poisons too if they are not regulated.

if you are having headaches consistently, you should see your doctor. it could be a sign of High blood pressure that you are ignoring till it causes a major problem like Stroke, and then you would start blaming innocent village people.

a word is enough for the wise!!

I would keep writing about common heath conditions that affect us everyday on Nairaland for the ones that would take the time to read!!

you should take your health very seriously!!

Health / Re: PROSTATE CANCER: Important Things Every Man Should Know by Edunews: 6:41am On Sep 09, 2020
Edunews:
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and the second most common cancer diagnosed worldwide.

What is the Prostate?
The prostate is a walnut sized gland that is part of the male reproductive system.
The prostate makes some of the fluid that nourishes and protects sperm cells in the semen.

About 20,000 men die of prostate cancer every year in Nigeria.
About 1 in 5 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.

It has the potential to grow and spread quickly, but for most men, it is a relatively slow growing disease.

As men age, the risk of developing prostate cancer increases. About 6 in 10 cases are found in men over the age of 65.
If you have relatives—father, brother, son—with a history of prostate cancer, then you have a high chance of developing the disease.

Men with prostate cancer do not always experience symptoms, especially in the early stages of the disease.
When symptoms do appear, they include changes in urinary or sexual function, such as;
- frequent urination, especially in the nighttime.
- delay in starting urination when you get to the toilet
- straining to urinate
- feeling like there is still urine left even after just urinating.
- painful or burning urination,
- difficulty getting or maintain an erection or
- a dull pain in the lower pelvic area.

Prostate cancer is 100 percent treatable if detected early.

Men of average risk are often advised to consider screening earlier at age 40 to establish a baseline.
Screening is to try to detect prostate cancer at its earliest stages, before any symptoms have developed. That’s when the cancer can be treated most effectively.

Screening may include a - Prostate-Specific Antigen, PSA: This is an enzyme found in the blood produced exclusively by prostate cells.
- Others are: blood test, Digital Rectal Examination, DRE.

Your doctor would explain to you more about the screening.

If caught early, prostate cancer has 95 percent survival rate.
Diagnosis is confirmed with a biopsy.

Treatment options for Prostate cancer depends on the stage. They includes; Chemotherapy (drugs), Radiotherapy (radiation) & surgery.

See your doctor for the most appropriate treatment for you.

but again, it doesn't only happen to Cheating couples.
it also happens to Married couples. You can see the link above for stories where it happened to married couples on BBC.

The difference is that, married couples would not come out or scream about what happens to them.

and this condition would usually relax itself in anytime from a couple of seconds to about 10-15 minutes.

once the mans Erection relaxes, and the woman's contraction reduces, he would be able to free his penis from the woman's vagina.

Over the years, we have heard stories of two people getting stuck during sex. However, these stories are usually about unfaithful couples getting stuck to their partners. In fact, there is a more recent one that just happened in Ogun State. You can see the video on: https://publichealthnig.com/penis-captivus-magun-penis-stuck-in-the-vagina/

In the Yoruba tribe, it is believed that if a woman cheats on her husband and gets stuck to the man she cheated with, her husband may have laid thunderbolt, popularly known as “Magun” on her.

While this is widely believed, This not exactly so. This condition known as PENIS CAPTIVUS occurs both in married couples and Unmarried. It occurs in Nigeria, in Africa as well as Abroad.

Penis captivus occurs more frequently in animals than it does in humans. And it’s not uncommon to see animals that “are stuck together” after sex, particularly dogs

If a partner feels penis captivus starting to happen, they should try to stay calm. Added stress can lead to more muscular tension, which can make the phenomenon last longer. It is important not to try to force the penis out of the vagina. Doing so can hurt one or both partners.

It is also important not to try to open the vagina or pry the penis out manually. Taking deep breaths may help both partners become or remain calm. Distracting each other or making a joke out of the situation can also relieve the tension and reduce arousal in the genitals.

A married woman once told us: “It happened to my late husband and myself one night. He literally could not withdraw…"

So, What are your Opinions of this??

Do you know anyone that it has happened to, especially Married couples?
