The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reacted to the declaration by the Defence Headquarters that the group is a terrorist organisation. The group said it was a non-violent movement and that it had never carried arms or killed anyone. IPOB’s position was made known by Prince Kanu, the younger brother of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu during a chat with newsmen on Friday. He said: “It is very, very laughable that that is coming from a military intelligence officer. One, IPOB is a non-violent movement. “We do not carry arms; we’ve never asked anyone to kill for us neither have we killed anyone. If you look at our records, our records are clean and straight.” “From inception, Nnamdi Kanu made it clear to the whole world that we are non-violent freedom fighters and that is the way it has been,” Prince Kanu said. Reasons given by the Defence Headquarters for declaring the group a terrorist organisationinclude the formation of a Biafra Secret Service, claimed formation of Biafra National Guard, unauthorised blocking of public access roads; extortion of money from innocent civilians at illegal roadblocks, and militant possession and use of weapons (stones, Molotov cocktails, machetes and broken bottles among others) on a military patrol on September 10, 2017. more details at http://www.akelicious.com/2017/09/ipob-reacts-to-military-declaring-it.html

Niran Adedokun has addressed the issues surrounding the presidential ambition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the fracas within the APC. Three things intrigue me about Nigerian politicians. The first is their unending capacity for deception. First deception on the people, which ultimately tails in uncanny self-delusion.That kind of thing in which people tell themselves so much lies, get so used to it and willingly substitute it for the truth. The second is the failure and refusal to learn from mistakes. It is said that to have pitfalls, the horse at the back watches its precursor’s steps but that standard is too simple for Nigerian politicians to live with. They never learn from mistakes, not their own, not the ones committed by others. The third point is a corollary of the second and it is their tendency for unmitigated self-destruct. Nothing but a mighty fall awaits people who fail to learn from the past. Nigerian politicians take the people for complete fools. They pretend that all the issues that they fight and scramble about are in the interest of those who voted them into power, whereas it hardly is. Of course, they get away with this fraud since the bulk of Nigerians are either too politically naïve or star-stuck to ask questions or see through the repeated veneer of deceit. The latest half-truth that politicians are selling to us is that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is the most troubling reality of the ruling All Progressives Congress. Following last week’s leakage of a video which showed Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha Alhassan, express the hope that Atiku would be President of Nigeria in 2019 and her reiteration of a preference for her political godfather over President Muhammadu Buhari, on whose prerogative she is on the Federal Executive Council, members of the APC have continued to give the impression that they had a cohesive party until this ruffling by Atiku and his loyalists. But that is dishonest. It is true that Atiku’s ambition and the traction it seems to be gaining may truly have brought the storm home much earlier than expected, but the Atiku challenge is merely a token of the series of turbulence that the APC invited on itself and should prepare for. In the months to come, the party will have to contend with the Senator Bukola Saraki challenge as well as the Bola Ahmed Tinubu challenge, at the least. And these problematic tendencies are not new at all. Like the umbilical cord naturally follows the delivery of a new born, the raging and coming trouble were delivered alongside the birth of the APC. The party deceives, not just Nigerians but itself by pretending otherwise. The deception gets more sickening when you realise that the National Working Committee of the party, whose member, Alhaji Inuwa Abdulkadir, National Vice Chairman (North-West), condemned Atiku’s criticism of the party and called for the resignation of Alhassan last week, is itself a representation of the conflicting interests in the party. This is why as we speak, it has become impossible for any national organ of the party to take a concrete position on the issues in contention. The NWC is a body comprising people with divided loyalties and scant allegiance to the party which brought all these interests together. This, of course, was the juncture the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, had hoped to forestall when he spoke about the need to prepare “to check the excesses of the currently lopsided and perhaps ambivalent NWC,” in that very famous letter he sent to Buhari last year. No matter what they now say, promoters of the APC, entered into this hurried alliance with the sole purpose of getting rid of a common enemy, President Goodluck Jonathan. There was no firm determination of the terms of engagement and as soon as the adversary was rid of, the spoils of war became a curse on the winning team. ThisAlhassan revelation and Atiku’s succeeding serial outbursts are mere flashes of lightning before the imminent thunderstorm. The cloud burst is avoidable though if these politicians would be a bit more teachable and noble in their motives. The truth is that everything the APC currently experiences has become trite to us as a people. If these men and women were honest with themselves for instance, they would have realised that the same sentiments which drive the current discontent in the APC led the Peoples Democratic Party to the premature end of its run at the helms of national affairs in 2015. It is sad that the APC is caught in the same web just two years later. Like it happened in the PDP, the fight that led five of its governors, some of who are active in the APC at the moment, the current trembling in the APC is neither about policy nor the principles of right or wrong. On the contrary, it is about personal interests and pride, about gaining the upper hand, defending territories, turfs and sustaining egos. You will recall that this scenario played out in the years preceding the 2015 elections. Jonathan, after taking control of the National Executive Council of the PDP through the installation of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, went after the Nigeria Governors’ Forum which had become a control bloc. At this time, forces that wanted Jonathan out of the Presidency were converging and the former President wanted his allies at the head of every influential group in the country. Before then, things had fallen apart between him and former Governor Chibuike Amaechi for reasons which were more personal than the love of country and Rivers State that Ameachi tried to sell to Nigerians. If no other fact was obvious, Amaechi had become an ally of forces that were opposed to Jonathan, including Saraki. Saraki also literally had a seat at the highest decision making table of the PDP until Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje was replaced by Tukur. This removal edged Saraki out of the room. His only footstool on the national plane remained at the NGF which Jonathan was beginning to get interested in by insisting on any other leader but Amaechi who was not with him. Amaechi won with the collaboration of governors outside of the PDP but that victory brought the NGF to untold crisis and marked a point of no return for Jonathan and the forces that were against him in the PDP. By then, the egos of men had taken over, the parties went to war, sparing no arsenal in their possession until someone got terminally bruised. Jonathan lost the elections, with suspicions that many party leaders betrayed him and the PDP has never been the same. That a similar war is brewing in the APC so soon after, shows that no lessons have been learnt. Now, that is really sad especially considering that all the likely combatants in the current situation witnessed the acrimony that brought the self-styled largest party in Africa to its feet; in fact, a significant number of these people were on the frontline of the PDP battle. However, it is clear that neither those who had personal experience of the war nor those who watched from the sidelines learnt anything significant from the fall of the erstwhile ruling party. As things stand, current holders of power will come down heavy on all contending tendencies, appropriate all the power to themselves, alienate the disgruntled and unwittingly whittle down the chances of their party to come to war as a single front. Self-interest and personal ego will blind the stalwarts to the virtues inherent in communication and working for compromises for the benefits of all. To sustain the self-righteous persona that each of the groups have created, they will work hard at destroying one another without care for the purpose that they came together in the first place. But the APC can still let reason prevail. Rather than let this Atiku situation lead the party into a long drawn battle which would do no one good, it should be seen as an opportunity to genuinely address the concerns of every power bloc in the party and arrive as some acceptable compromise. That is what a party, truly interested in the welfare of the people would do in the circumstance. But then, how many of those around the corridors of power here, truly see political power as a venture on behalf of the people? source:http://www.akelicious.com/2017/09/is-atiku-really-apcs-problem.html

Two pro-Biafra factions yesterday, disagreed sharply on the way forward for agitation, during the 18th anniversary for secession. The Uchenna Madu-led Movement for Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) said the struggle will continue despite what it called “harassment and intimidation by the security agents in Nigeria.” But, the Chief Ralph Uwazurike-led Movement for Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra / Biafra Independent Movement (MASSOB- BIM) accused other splinter groups of planning to cause war in Nigeria by their actions. Regardless, Madu, who spoke during the 18th anniversary celebration of the agitation at the Rojemmy Sport Complex, Oba, said they will continue with the struggle from where the Head of State of the defunct Republic of Biafra, late Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, left it and noted that no man, no power, no threat will stop Biafra struggle. “We do not hate Nigeria, it is because of injustice we have found in Nigeria and the way the Igbos are treated that we are fighting for Biafra. “We love Nigeria more than those who claimed to love Nigeria. If you go to any part of the country, you will see Igbos developing the place, building houses. “We must continue the journey for Biafra restoration as handed over by Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu. They are afraid of us that is why they are deploying troops in Biafra land. “We are not moved by the Operation Python Dance… “We say enough is enough for slavery, intimidation and relegation to the background. We are Biafrans and they should allow us to be. MASSOB under my leadership is the same with IPOB.” But, Uwazurike, who spoke in Onitsha, Anambra State, urged the Hausa community to report provocations directed at them to the law enforcement agents and noted that the strategy of the detractors is to “foment trouble with the Hausa communities in the South East and South South so that our people in the North may be attacked. “They recently provoked a quit notice from the Northern Youth leaders. I travelled to Arewa House, in Kaduna, to douse the tension. “Their new strategy now is to attack Hausa communities in the South East and South South, to achieve their nefarious intentions. All hands must be on deck to ensure that these evil plans did not see the light of the day. “Without being immodest, I am the originator of the New Biafra Struggle. I recruited every operator in this struggle, the good, the bad and the ugly. “The new Biafra struggle was intended to be a long-term process, backed by non-violent initiatives. “There is no shortcut. “We are happy to announce that, after 18 years of the struggle, we are still in the saddle. We are stronger and more determined. We enjoin our misled comrades who followed the wrong way to trace back their steps to the original concepts. The struggle continues,” Uwazuruike said. more details at http://www.akelicious.com/2017/09/18th-anniversary-massob-insists-on.html

Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, and the Association of Senior Servants of Nigeria have agreed to temporarily put off their strike notice until September 20, 2017. Ngige, in a statement Tuesday night by the Deputy Director (Press), Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mr. Samuel Olowookere, said this is to enable the Nigerian government commence the payment of pending promotion arrears. He said: “Among others, the meeting agreed that 30 Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA) that the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation reported having cleared their allowances, amounting to N1.165 billion should start to receive credit of payment to their account bySeptember 20, 2017. “It also agreed the office of the Accountant General of the Federation should also provide the list of the 30 MDAs in reference to the office of the Minister of Labour and Employment by September 13, 2017.” Ngige said the conciliation meeting further set up a seven-man committee to be chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour, with three members each drawn from the government negotiating team and the labour association respectively to oversee the implementation of the decisions. The minister had earlier while addressing the union restated the unflinching commitment of the Buhari administration to the welfare of workers. “The arrears in question accumulated for up to a decade but the president very much concerned about the welfare of the citizens resolved to settle the backlog, knowing that government is also a continuum. ‘This is a government that has the interest of workers at heart, the very reason we stoically refused to retrench any civil servant despite dwindling resources we met and worsened by the recession,” he said. more details at http://www.akelicious.com/2017/09/workers-give-nigeria-govt-september-20.html

English Premier League clubs voted on Thursday to shut the 2018 close-season transfer window before the start of the 2018-19 campaign. Following complaints by managers that transfer activity disturbs their preparations, clubs will not be able to register new players after 1600 GMT on the Thursday before the season starts. The transfer window in Europe’s other major leagues runs until August 31, meaning clubs outside England could buy players from English top-flight teams after the new Premier League deadline. “Premier League clubs have today agreed to a rule amendment that will see the summer transfer window in any year end at 17:00 on the Thursday before the start of the season,” the Premier League said in a statement. “This is for Premier League clubs only and has no bearing on other leagues and competitions.” Europe’s other major leagues — Spain’s Liga, Italy’s Serie A, the German Bundesliga and France’s Ligue 1 — now face a decision about whether to fall into line with England. Juventus CEO Giuseppe Marotta says Serie A’s 20 clubs are in agreement to “set the end of the transfer window on July 31” in Italy. “The transfer window is exhausting,” he said recently. “It’s become a circus.” The French league also suggested it was also in support of following the Premier League’s example. “In principle, the Professional Football League (LFP) is in favour of bringing the closing date forwards to before the start of the championship,” an LFP official told AFP. “The question will be on the agenda at a future board of directors meeting before the end of the year.” But the German league (DFL) said there was no clear consensus among the Bundesliga’s top clubs. “The theme of the transfer window – regardless of the decision of the Premier League – was on the agenda of today’s general meeting of sports representatives of the Bundesliga and the second Bundesliga at the DFL, and it became clear that there is no definitive opinion among the clubs,” said a DFL spokesman. The Premier League’s move was announced following a meeting of club officials and is not believed to have been agreed unanimously. Wenger approval Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger gave his backing to the decision before it was announced. “Even in the games, you sit there before the games and even in players’ minds they have no clarity,” he told reporters at his weekly press conference. “Are they in? Are they out? Are they half in? Are they half out? Are they tapped up in the afternoon of the game by people who want to get them out? It’s not the way to work and it’s uncomfortable. “Every single manager in the league would agree that it’s time to kick that out before the season starts and not continue to have players in the dressing room who are half out and half in.” England’s Football League — the second, third and fourth tiers — is not affected by the move. Premier League clubs spent a record £1.4 billion ($1.8 billion, 1.5 billion euros) on new players during the 2017 close-season window. The window closed last Thursday, three weeks after the new season had started. Chris Hughton, manager of newly-promoted Brighton and Hove Albion, welcomed the decision. “That is good news,” he said. “Most managers would say the same. You have a hectic enough time as it is preparing for the season.” Earlier this week, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin gave his support to making the close-season player trading period shorter. Transfer windows were introduced by world governing body FIFA in 2002. In Europe they generally run from the start of June to the end of August, with a shorter mid-season window in January. more details at http://www.akelicious.com/2017/09/epl-to-close-transfer-window-before.html

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu has vowed not to allow “Hausa, Fulani” soldiers harass people of the South East. Kanu said this while receiving some members of IPOB who were allegedly attacked by security operatives at Isigate area of Umuahia, the Abia State capital, yesterday. Some Keke NAPEP drivers had engaged some soldiers at the Isigate area of the state over alleged extortion. Reacting to the incident, Kanu, who urged his followers not to feel intimidated, said, “It won’t happen under my watch, it won’t happen while I’m alive.” Kanu urged members of the group not to be intimidated, saying they are in their “father’s land.” Speaking at his Umuahia residence, the IPOB leader advised his members against giving bribes to soldiers at road blocks. According to Kanu, “Never be afraid of the enemies of Biafra, that is what I’m teaching you people in IPOB. “There will be no extortion anymore in Biafra. Yes you were assaulted and injured and because of the pains you went through other people will no longer have to give money to Fulani soldiers anymore. “We are in our land and they came here to look for trouble, that trouble they are looking for they will find it very soon. “They came to our land to extort money from us because they have AK47 assault rifles and think they can intimidate us into submission. “We work from morning till night driving keke NAPEP trying to make ends meet, some of us are graduates driving Keke NAPEP, struggling to live and survive, yet soldier stand at Isi-gate collecting money from us, extorting us and telling us we cannot put on Biafra flag and insignia. “No idiot can stop us from putting on Biafra insignia. We are IPOB, we don’t look for trouble if you look for our own we will give it back to you. “Go and tell that thing they brought back called Buhari, he is a cartoon, you only see the back of his head and not his face. They said he was watching football match. “Don’t allow them to conquer you with fear, they are terrorists who terrorise people. Did soldiers give you money to hold for them? So why are they harassing us for money everyday? “Go around this town and tell them that we say no to extortion, there is no group more law abiding than IPOB but I don’t want the zoo to make us lawless, they are forcing us to become lawless but we have remained lawful. “We have more road blocks now because we continue to give them money. The more you give them money the more they come down from Hausa land and mount road blocks. “In their place Huasa,Fulani does not give money to any soldier. Because of the sacrifice of this ones at Is-gate there will be no more extortion in Igbo land. “I’m not afraid of them, they are the ones who should be afraid of me because they know what will happen , when IPOB matches the ground shakes. “We are in our land the land of our ancestors Ndigbo and somebody is coming from Arewa North with AK47 to harass you in your father’s compound, you are a fool if you allow them to step on you, it won’t happen under my watch, it won’t happen while I’m alive. I can assure you. “Go out and tell the world that we are IPOB and have no fear before our enemies.” more details at http://www.akelicious.com/2017/09/what-i-wont-allow-hausa-fulani-soldiers.html

A member of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Prof. Femi Odekunle, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari, to use executive powers to subvert the shenanigans of the judiciary for the anti-graft war to succeed. Odekunle, who accused the judiciary of shielding corrupt lawyers and judges, said the government needs to break the rule of law to win the fight against corruption. He stated these when he appeared on Focus Nigeria, a programme on African Independent Television (AIT) on Thursday morning. Odekunle said the judiciary has failed to support the federal government’s anti-graft war. He said: “The only problem we are having is that we are not having the full cooperation of the legal profession in the matter (corruption). Lawyers and judges have this sentimental affiliation. “The legal profession felt threatened by the stance of this administration on corruption, about the role of the legal profession, about the senior lawyers and about the judiciary. “So there was a kind of development of some subconscious to protect their own. Perhaps there must be a way in which they can be reached to say the interest of the nation must come first. “We have to find a way of breaking into this and one way of breaking into this is to engage in what I said. For example, somebody was quarrelling with me and I am being honest, without breaking the law. Fighting corruption involves roforofo fight.” more details at http://www.akelicious.com/2017/09/buhari-must-subvert-judiciary-in-anti.html

Skipper John Obi Mikel was in buoyant spirit as the Super Eagles arrived Yaounde yesterday afternoon for today’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. “We are just very keen to finish what we started. We started a job in Uyo and it is time to finish it. If we can pick the World Cup ticket by Monday (today), why wait any longer? “We are all very confident, because we know our ability and what we are ready to bring to the party.” Nigeria achieved her highest win ever over Cameroon with the massive thumping of the Lions on Friday, and Mikel is aware the wounded Lions will want to salvage some pride. “We are as hungry, perhaps even more hungry than they are. It will be a tough affair but we will give our very best to take the three points.” Nigeria could become the first African team to earn a slot in Russia as early as tomorrow (next 24 hours) if they defeat the Cameroonians today in Yaounde and Zambia fail to beat Algeria at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker in Blida tomorrow. Technical Adviser Gernot Rohr has 23 very fit players to select from, with goalkeepers Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Dele Ajiboye and Dele Alampasu, defenders Uche Agbo, Abdullahi Shehu, Elderson Echiejile, Ola Aina, Leon Balogun, William Ekong, Tyronne Ebuehi and Chidozie Awaziem, midfielders Mikel Obi, Ogenyi Onazi, John Ogu, Wilfred Ndidi, Oghenekaro Etebo and Mikel Agu, and forwards Ahmed Musa, Victor Moses, Odion Ighalo, Moses Simon, Anthony Nwakaeme and Kelechi Iheanacho making the trip. At the Hilton Hotel yesterday to receive the Nigerian team was Cameroun’s Minister of Sport, Bidoung Mpaktt, who chatted briefly with NFF President Amaju Pinnick. FIFA has appointed respected Senegalese official Bakary Papa Gassama as the referee for today’s encounter, to be assisted by Jean Claude Birumushahu from Burundi (Assistant 1), Marwa Aden Range from Kenya (Assistant 2) and Maudo Jallow from Gambia (Reserve Referee). Osama Ataa Elmanan Hassan from Sudan will be match commissioner at the game kicking off 6pm. more details at http://www.akelicious.com/2017/09/well-finish-what-we-started-mikel.html

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, says there is no resurgence of Boko Haram contrary to insinuation in some circles. Mohammed debunked the insinuation of the resurgence of Boko Haram in a remark to the media during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations in his country home, Oro, near Ilorin. He said that some recent tragic events, including suicide bombings and the abduction of some staff of the University of Maiduguri, were antics by the insurgents. “The truth is that there is no resurgence of Boko Haram. Cowardly bombings and kidnappings are some of the hallmarks of an asymmetric warfare that insurgencies are. “And like I say all the time, such wars do not end by the signing of any truce. They taper off with time, as this one surely will,” he said. The minister said that to ensure that the insurgency tapered off quickly, the Nigerian troops were daily living up to their constitutional responsibility of maintaining the nation’s territorial integrity and securing its borders. “They are ensuring that never again will Boko Haram take control of our territories, attack our major cities, including Abuja, at will and fly their flag anywhere in the country. “Therefore, as we celebrate this Festival of Sacrifice, we owe the marked improvement in the security situation in our country in general and the North-East in particular to the men and women in uniform. “They have sacrificed so much to make our country safer than at any other time since the Boko Haram insurgency started in 2009. “Yes, we are not totally out of the woods yet, but we are much better today than we were in 2015, when this administration assumed office,” he said. While commending the entire military for the feat of “largely defeating Boko Haram”, he identified certain roles played by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in the successes recorded. He said that with the support and the enabling environment provided by President Muhammadu Buhari, young and well-trained pilots were those flying the aircraft in the inventory of the NAF. Mohammed said unlike what was obtainable in the past, officers below 30 years of age, were Flight Lieutenants flying the planes, including the C-130s and serving as Instructor Pilots. He said after over 32 years, the NAF recently graduated 16 instructors from its primary flying school in Kaduna. “This is possible because the NAF has moved from just two trainer aircraft when this administration came into office to 14 trainer aircraft presently. “The number continues to grow, in addition to other logistical issues like availability of spare parts and aviation fuel being squarely addressed. “This has also ensured that pilots can conclude their initial flying training within four months. “I can tell you that from December last year to June/July this year, the Air force has ‘winged’ 32 pilots, who are now fully qualified to fly the air force’s aircraft,” he said. The minister noted that, in terms of building capacity through training and re-training of personnel, the NAF had also ratcheted up its capability. He called on Nigerians to keep praying and supporting the troops rather than dwelling on the Boko Haram resurgence that never was. He also called on the media to deny the insurgents publicity, which he described as “the oxygen they desperately crave to survive”. more details at http://www.akelicious.com/2017/09/there-is-no-resurgence-of-boko-haram.html

Four support groups registered with the national secretariat of All Progressives Congress (APC) have rejected the nomination of Tony Nwoye as the party’s governorship candidate for the forthcoming Anambra election and have asked for a repeat of the primary. The Anambra All Progressives Congress Forum led by Obum Ozuanwu, All Progressives Congress Voters Club led by Ifeanyi Obinna, South-East All Progressive Congress Forum led by Mazi Chuzzy and Igbo/Yoruba Unity Forum led by Godwin Okafor all called for the cancellation of the primary and the disqualification of Nwoye and Senator Andy Uba from re-contesting. They appealed to the national chairman of the party, John Oyegun and the National Working Committee (NWC) to drop Nwoye as the standardbearer if the party must win the governorship election. The groups said Nwoye was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and may still have sympathy for his former party. Part of the statement reads: “We are calling on the party’s NWC to order a re-run and we are calling for a suspension of Nwoye and Uba from participating in the re-run. Some people have been in the party for long and they just came to take the position of those who have been in the party. We won’t allow that. “PDP is a corrupt party and Nwoye and Uba shouldn’t have been allowed to participate in the primary. He was elected as the party’s candidate but we want him substituted with a candidate who is credible or have a re-run of the primary with credible candidates who can win election for APC in Anambra. If this is allowed, how can APC survive in the South-East?” more details at http://www.akelicious.com/2017/09/anambra-guber-cancel-apc-primary-result.html

Community leaders from the three senatorial districts of Imo State have advised the state House of Assembly to, forthwith, begin the impeachment process of Governor Rochas Okorocha. The community leaders accused the governor of turning himself into a tyrant in the way he was managing the affairs of the state. They said their anger was as a result of the demolition of the ancestral Ekeukwu market initially known as Ogwumabiri market and the killing of a 10-year-old boy, Somtochukwu, from Anambra State during the protest against the demolition. Addressing newsmen in Abuja yesterday, the leaders from Owerri, Okigwe and Orlu senatorial districts under the umbrella of Concerned Imo Leaders who wore black attires, signifying mourning, claimed that the state had been sliding and that the event of last week’s demolition of the Ekeukwu market and the alleged murder of four persons were the climax of its sliding. Spokesperson of the group, Chief Sam Obaji, together with the immediate past chairman of Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, Dr. Sam Amadi; the leader of Owerri socio-cultural organisation, Dozie Owerri, Chief Tony Anyadike, and Okey Ikpe said Governor Okorocha accused the governor of turning himself into an emperor. According to them, “As political, social and cultural leaders from across Imo State, we address you today with sorrowful hearts at the happenings in our beloved Imo State, especially the destruction of lives and property in Owerri during last Saturday’s unlawful, reckless and unprofitable demolition of the ancient and iconic Eke-ukwu Owerri Main Market. “At the wake of that demolition, four persons were killed, many more wounded and property worth billions of naira destroyed by armed military personnel on the instruction of the state government. “Most heartrending is the killing of 10-year-old Somtochukwu Igboanusi of 9, Oguamalam Street who hailed from Anambra State. That child was gunned down as he tried to clear wares from his father’s shop. “Since Governor Okorocha assumed power in Imo State, he has managed affairs of the state in a manner that suggests he has a hidden agenda against the Owerri Senatorial Zone and the entire people of Imo State. “His unplanned urban development project has resulted in the complete dilapidation of roads in the state capital, the flooding of major streets in Owerri whenever there is slight rainfall and the complete deterioration of physical and social infrastructure in the entire state. “That in view of Governor Rocha’s clearly established leadership incompetence and serial blunders on the most elemental duties of governance, he should honourably resign as governor of Imo State. “That if Governor Okorocha refuses to resign, members of the Imo State House of Assembly should immediately proceed to impeach him from office as governor of Imo State. “That the government of Imo State should refrain from further violation of the court orders in respect of these demolitions. That the President should institute a judicial commission of inquiry into the circumstances of the use of armed forces personnel in this unlawful operation and ensure anyone who played a role in this unlawful deployment of the military should be prosecuted according to the law.” full details at http://www.akelicious.com/2017/08/imo-leaders-list-reasons-governor.html

Despite the limited access to finance, and illegal artisanal mining activities, federal government has commenced disbursement of N5 billion to artisanal and small-scale miners in the country. Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi disclosed at the signing of MOU with Bank of Industry, BOI, for local miners to access the fund, and integrate them into formal sector. He explained, “We are in the first instance launching a N5 billion fund, with our ministry’s pilot contribution of N2.5 billion, while BOI will support with another N2.5 billion.” According to him, with the agreement, we appoint the bank as Custodian and manager of the Nigerian Artisanal and Small-Scale Miners Financing Support Fund for mining projects. “The loans would be made available to certified industry participants at a single digit interest rate of 5 percent per annum, which is by far about the most attractive within our jurisdiction”, he added. The minister further disclosed, the single obligor limit of loans to be granted under the Fund should be from N100, 000 to N10million for artisanal miners, and N10million to N100 million for small-scale miners. He expressed delight that Solid Minerals Development Fund, SMDF is now spearheading sourcing of a $600million investment fund for the sector, judging, in 2015,out of N1 billion allocated to the ministry, only N352 million was released. Dr. Fayemi commended BOI, saying, “we consider her dependable partner who share our vision and we trust that it would bring their pedigree to bear on this initiative as foremost specialized bank set up to pursue economic development.” Responding, the Managing Director/CEO, Bank of Industry [BOI] , Olukayode Pitan called on beneficiaries not to see the grant as free money that could be used for other purposes rather than what it is meant for. Pitan listed the benefits of the grants to include, that of revenue generation, employment creation and capacity building among others. According to him, before the grants would be released to the target small scale miners, they must pass through the internal mechanism of the Bank. The loans, which are expected to be paid within one year has single digit interest rate. full details at http://www.akelicious.com/2017/08/fg-begins-disbursement-of-n5billion.html

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, has reiterated the need for an all-inclusive and gender balance political space to encourage women participation in the electoral process. Mahmood made the call yesterday when he received the United Nations (UN) Women Country Representative in Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ms. Comfort Lamptey, at his office in Abuja. He noted that the Commission, in collaboration with gender-based organisations, such as the UN Women, had been taking steps to encourage political parties to increase women participation during electoral contests, noting with delight that the Commission’s consultations with parties has been yielding positive results. Speaking on the INEC Gender Policy launched in 2015, Yakubu, said: “We are committed to ensuring that we deepen its implementation as we move towards the 2019 general elections.” As part of the Commission’s efforts to ensure an all-inclusive participation in the elections, Yakubu hinted that the Commission, in collaboration with UN Women and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), would be developing strategies aimed at making the number of women count in the elections. “It is beyond engaging with the political parties; we also need to engage with CSOs in that respect,” he said.Earlier, Ms. Lamptey, who recently assumed office in Nigeria, noted that the UN Women and INEC had been working towards increasing women’s participation in the electoral process, noting that there was room for improvement. She pointed out that Nigerian women have the least representation in parliaments across Africa, a situation she said needed to be addressed, especially as Nigeria is regarded as a leader in Africa. She pledged the support of her organisation in the implementation of the INEC Gender Policy, as well as collaboration towards gender mainstreaming in the electoral process in Nigeria. more at http://www.akelicious.com/2017/08/inec-chairman-advocates-more-women.html

A Lagos-based landlord, Ishola Idris, and his tenant, Linus Okonkwo, have been arraigned before a magistrate’s court sitting at Ikeja for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl. Idris was alleged to have deflowered the girl in January this year, while his tenant, Okonkwo, raped her in March. Similarly, a 53-year-old man, David Ajayi, was yesterday arraigned before a magistrate’s court in Lagos for allegedly defiling his neighbour’s eight-year-old daughter. Ajayi, who resides at 5, Moshalashi Street, Somolu, Lagos, is facing a charge of defilement. The two charges brought against the landlord and his tenant read: “That you, Ishola Idris, sometime in January 2017 at 30, Celestial Road, Igando, Lagos, in Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully defile one 13-year-old girl-child (names withheld) by having sexual intercourse with her. “That you, Linus Okonkwo, sometime in March 2017 at 30, Celestial Road, Igando, Lagos, in Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully and sexually assaulted one 13-year-old girl by penetrating into her vagina with your penis.” The accused pleaded not guilty to the allegations. The alleged crime, according to the police, is punishable under Section 261 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015. They were later granted bail by Chief Magistrate Bolanle Osunsanmmi in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties. The matter was adjourned to October 12, 2017 for trial. According to Police Prosecutor, Clifford Ogu, Ajayi committed the offence on August 15 at his residence. Ogu said the accused lured the girl into his room on the pretext of sending her on an errand before defiling her. “The accused shut the door, defiled her and asked her not to tell anybody. She, however, told her mother when she felt pains in her private part,” he told the court. The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, and carries a penalty of life imprisonment. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Taiwo Akanni granted the accused bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until September 6, 2017, for mention. more details at http://www.akelicious.com/2017/08/landlord-tenant-rape-teenage-girl.html

Governor of Ekiti State and loudest opposition voice to President Mohammadu Buhari’s government, Ayodele Fayose has said that his agitation and revelation about what had happened to the President was responsible for ‘the return of President Buhari last Saturday. Fayose who spoke to leaders of the Peoples’ Democratic Party at the government office, yesterday, said he stands by all his claims about the President be in a coma on July 6, adding that he has no apology whatsoever for all he has said. The governor who reiterated his call for President Buhari’s resignation said : “If not for our efforts Buhari wouldn’t have returned now. Buhari is sick and tired and even his physical appearance betrayed this and he needs to go home and rest. ” Today, they have cancelled the Federal Executive Council meeting. You cannot hide the truth forever, it will reveal itself someday. You cannot continue to deceive Nigerians. ” Every word that has come out of my mouth before the President returns, I have no apology for them. President Buhari was indeed in a coma and one of those who visited him said his recovery is a miracle, that shows that he was indeed very sick. ” Let Buhari go back to Daura and rest. Don’t send him to an early grave. Buhari is not old enough to be my father, my mother is older than Buhari, he cannot be my father, he can only be my uncle. I am close to 60. I stand by all I have said about the President. We are glad he is back but don’t over flog him. “I am not a sycophant and I stand to speak for Nigeria. Somebody must be able to speak on behalf of the poor masses. This was how they deceived us during the time of Yar’Adua. I am not a hypocrite and I will never be one. This country deserves a very healthy person. The office of the president is not for a sick man. The president is tired and should be allowed to resign and go and rest. ” he said details later. I have said it severally and without apologies. Everything I said when the President was away, I stand by them. The president actually went into a coma and this was attested to by what one of the governors who visited him when he was abroad said that his recovery was a miracle. When somebody’s recovery is a miracle it simply means something very serious happened to the person. “since the President himself cannot disclose his health status and also the extent of his ailment, it apparently shows that there is so much to hide. Not until civil societies and people like us started making noise. You can’t be our president without us knowing what is happening to you. So, for me, the president went to a coma July 6. Today, they can come back and organise rallies and all that; they attested to the fact the President recovered by a miracle which we are glad about. We are happy that he is back But when you look physically look at the President he is physically. You will see that he is emaciated tired and weak. “You don’t have to be president at all cost when you are tired. You go home. I don’t want to talk about 2019′ but I want to tell you that Nigeria needs a president that is agile and strong. The job is too much for an individual that does not have what it takes. It is a common saying that health is wealth. Everything is about health. We wish him well and we want him to recover but the President should throw in the towel, resign and go home. ” You see they said he would come back and resume in his office, he resumed in his office, they said rats have taken over his office! A presidential office, rats took over his office! ” Now they said he is working from home, tomorrow, they would say he is coming from the bedroom. All these stories are ending up in a make believe. In a country where you have so much to do, I m not going to be sycophants here. I am going to be on the side of the common man, the President is tired. I feel for the president like every other elderly person, or even people who are not elderly. They could be sick. But when it comes to the issue of governing a country. There is so much responsibility to this and we must equally be able to stand up and say if the president does not have what it takes to continue, he should throw in the towel. Asked if he would oblige if invited to see Buhari, Fayose said: ” I cannot go and greet the president if invited and the reason is that such action would be misinterpreted to be something else. So, it is good for me to wish him well from a distance and be able to tell Nigerians the truth.” Denying that he ever said he would commit suicide should Buhari returns home as being speculated in the social media, he said: ” I can’t commit suicide because of an old man. Such are from miscreants on the social media. Let me tell you expressly, why would I commit suicide? I cannot commit suicide because of my mother. Even if they are burying my mother now, I will cleverly stay away from the grave so that I won’t fall into it. I can’t commit suicide because of Buhari. I never said that and will never make such statement. “Truth is that the pressure from me and many other Nigerians made the president return home. They have been treating this matter under the table forgetting that the life of a president is an open book that can be read by everybody and anybody. What I am saying in effect is that it is in the overall interest of everybody that we have a president that is strong enough to do the job, ” Fayose insisted. full details at http://www.akelicious.com/2017/08/my-agitation-brought-president-buhari.html

Nigeria’s Computer Village, adjudged the largest Information and Communications Technology (ICT) accessory market in Africa, contributes about N1.5 billion to the country’s economy daily. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Executive Vice Chairman, Prof. Umaru Danbatta, gave the figure, while being hosted by the Computer and Allied Products Dealers Association of Nigeria (CAPDAN), the leadership of the market in Lagos, yesterday. Danbatta, who added that the contributions of the market to the economy since the telecommunications revolution began some 16 years back, was now around $32 billion, however, informed that the figures were provided by the leadership of CAPDAN during an earlier indoor-meeting in May with the NCC in Abuja. According to Danbatta, there are about 3000 ICT Small and Medium scale Enterprises (SMEs) doing stuffs in the market, “as such the Computer Village market needs greater support to be able to contribute more to the economy.” While announcing the readiness of the Commission to work with CAPDAN on any front that will promote economic development, the NCC chief informed that it would sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the association. Danbatta urged the association to address issues of phone and other devices cloning; substandard products, stressing that so many mobile devices sold in the market are not type-approved by the NCC. According to him, these unregistered mobile devices are not safe and negatively affects the quality of service rendered by mobile network operators in the country, stressing that NCC has huge responsibility to protect Nigerians, “ we are calling on the CAPDAN to please support us to rid the market of unwanted elements peddling fake and substandard products.” Danbatta said as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility functions, the commission would train many CAPDAN members. In his welcome address, the President of CAPDAN, Ahmed Ojikutu, said the Village provides the highest number of ICT solutions in Nigeria and Africa at large, stressing that the market is also known as the hardware capital of Africa, which employs the highest number of graduates in the region. Ojikutu reminded that their activities go beyond selling of mobile devices, “it is a hub where a lot of technical activities go on. The level of repairs, refurbishment and software related activities that are carried out here entails skills that are at par with the expertise needed for manufacturing mobile devices from scratch. It is the belief of CAPDAN that such expertise should be leveraged on to contribute to the Nigerian economy. For us, it is time to grow the innovative and manufacturing potential of the Computer Village by upgrading it to an African ICT Hub or Nigeria’s Silicon Valley or India’s Bangalore.” The CAPDAN President appealed to NCC to among others offer them training and education through the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI); sponsorship of Computer Village to international seminars and conferences; facilitation of broadband in the market, among others. full details at http://www.akelicious.com/2017/08/computer-village-adds-n15b-to-nigerias.html

The Federal Government’s revenue drive has got a lift with additional $8.750 million or N2.668 billion to be derived from fresh 175,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day from Shell’s Gbaran-Ubie Phase 2. The new production is approximately the equivalent of 864 million standard cubic feet of natural gas per day (mmscf/d), and 26,000 barrels of condensate per day in realisation of Federal Government’s gas monetisation programme. According to a statement by Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) yesterday, signed by its spokesperson, Bamidele Odugbesan, Gbaran-Ubie Phase 2 followed the success of the first phase of the Gbaran-Ubie integrated oil and gas development, which was commissioned in June 2010. Odugbesan, who stated that peak production at Gbaran-Ubie Phase 2 is expected in 2019 with approximately 175,000 barrels of oil equivalent (kboe) per day, said that Gbaran-Ubie Phase 2 would help to process the condensate from Kolo Creek, Gbaran, Koroama and Epu fields, thereby assisting in reducing the volume of flaring from SPDC operations. He said that the project had contributed to economic development in the Niger Delta and assisted the local community and Nigerian companies. In the same vein, Managing Director, SPDC and Country Chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria, Osagie Okunbor, said: “The latest development at Gbaran-Ubie is a powerful statement on the continuing commitment of SPDC and our joint venture partners to harness Nigeria’s oil and gas resources for the benefit of the country and stakeholders. “The project was delivered safely through an integrated team with a significant engagement and empowerment of community service providers and Nigerian companies.” Also, Vice President, Nigeria and Gabon, Peter Costello, described the development as an “exciting news for Nigeria, as it signals Shell’s continued strategy of deploying investment and expertise in our areas of strength. Our aim is to continue to explore areas of partnership in Nigeria where the right conditions exist and where we can add best value.” full details at http://www.akelicious.com/2017/08/government-to-earn-875m-from-new.html

In its drive for self-sufficiency in sugar production, the Dangote Group yesterday, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Niger State Government for the establishment of a N166-billion state-of–art and fully integrated sugar complex. On completion, according to the President of the Group, Aliko Dangote, the project will generate over 15,000 jobs in the State, and bring about a complete economic turn-around. The $450million pact, which was signed at the Government House in Minna, will see the company producing raw sugarcane on 16,000 hectares of land at Lavun Local Government Area, through an out-grower scheme. The Company, which is currently operating out-grower scheme in Rice production in a number of states, has the Africa’s largest sugar refinery in Lagos, and a sugar cane plantation in Numan, Adamawa State. Dangote said his investment was informed by his Company’s firm belief in the potential of the Nigerian economy, adding that the new outlay will add value and create jobs for Nigerians. He commended the State Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello, for his foresight and efforts to woo investors to Niger State, noting, “The Dangote’s Integrated Sugar Project in Niger State will also include the establishment of integrated sugar mills, generate power, produce molasses, ethanol fuel, biomass and produce animal feeds. In his remarks, Governor Bello said the deal will revolutionise agriculture in his state and Nigeria. Expressing joy that the MoU was signed during his own administration, he described Dangote as the liberator of the Nigerian economy, and a dependable partner. The Governor then urged Dangote Group to explore other investment opportunities available in the state, just as he announced that the state is open to multi-sectoral investments. Representative of the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Aminu Bisala, said Dangote is the biggest private sector supporter of the Nigerian economy, and Federal Government policies, adding that government was comfortable with the numerous investments efforts of the Dangote Group. Also speaking, the Chairman of the Niger State Traditional Council Etsu Nupe Abubakar Yahyah, said he was elated about the huge investment coming to the state, while praying God to bless the Dangote Group more. Just last week, the Conglomerate had sponsored an Investment Summit in the State, which was attended by former Presidents Abdulsalami Abubakar, Olusegun Obasanjo, and the then Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, who described the private sector as key to the country’s economic development. The Group Managing Director, Dangote Sugar Plc, Abdullahi Sule, said the MoU would be a Game Changer for Niger State economy, and Nigeria as a whole. He said the integrated sugar mills will have the capacity to produce 160,000 metric tonnes (MT), of raw sugar, pointing out that the Group has been in the forefront of supporting government’s industrialisation programmes through backward integration policy in agriculture. According to him, the Dangote Sugar Refinery is developing a sugar backward integration plan through the production of 1.5MT/PA in 10 years in: Nasarawa, Adamawa, Kogi, Kwara, Taraba, and Niger states respectively. The Group’s Executive Director, Stakeholders’ Management and Corporate Communication, Ahmed Mansur, had also announced that the Group was investing over $1billion in the agricultural sector in Nigeria, specifically in rice, sugar, tomato, and dairy productions. The Niger State Commissioner for Investment, Commerce and Industry, Rahmatu Muhammad Yar’Adua, said the deal with Dangote Group will help grow the agricultural sector, and create direct and indirect jobs in the state. Recall that the Group’s foray into sugar business began in 1981. It injected over N38billion into the Savannah Sugar Company Limited, it acquired from government in 2003. Savannah Sugar this year alone, produced 20,000MT of raw sugar from its plantation. source:http://www.akelicious.com/2017/08/dangote-niger-state-seal-n166b-pact-on.html
