Often times, we find out that we quickly run out of internet data, when browsing on our PCs. This could be a result of several applications running in the background, automatic windows updates e.t.c. It has thus become imperative that you know how to limit your computer’s internet data consumption.

Do you notice your internet data subscription gets exhausted once you connect to your PC?

Are you constrained by prohibitive Internet data subscription costs?

Are you battling with several apps, windows update and system services maxing out your bandwidth at the expense of your important software needs?

Do you frequently use use phone data as hotspot to connwct your PC?

3. It stops unnecessary background processes and application updates from exhausting your data and internet speed.

4. It can work on both Windows and Mac, with any WiFi or ethernet network, mobile hotspot or MiFi device, and 3G/4G modems.

Features of TripMode

# Block unwanted data hogs
Only apps that you’ve selected are allowed to access the Internet. The rest is blocked.

# Save data automatically
TripMode activates itself on networks where you’ve turned it on before. Set it, then forget it.

#Track your data usage
See the data used per app, session, day, and month.

# Spot the data-hungry apps.

#Set the limits*
Set a daily/weekly/monthly cap. All traffic stops when you reach it. Never exceed your data limit again!

#Schedule it*
Plan on what day(s) of the week and time TripMode should turn itself on automatically

There are several software applications on the market that we can use to achieve this. However, I would be recommending TripMode. This is because of its ease of use and its efficiency. It consumes minimal system resources, runes in the background and has auto-switch-on feature once it detects a previously connected network. It is available for both Mac and Windows PC.

How to Get TripMode

How to Use TripMode

Install the application. Don’t run it initially. Copy the patch to the programs installation directory (usually in C drive). Apply the patch. Note that you may get a false-positive result by your antivirus. This shouldn’t be a bother. Remember that you are installing a patch so it’s only normal for your antivirus program to flag the patch as a possible threat.

After patching, run the program. It gets minimised into your system tray. Tap to switch on TripMode. Go to settings and untick “automatically check for updates” and “check for updates at startup“.

How to Use TripMode

To enable internet data access for an app or service, just select the app/service under the TripMode interface. In the screenshot below, Google Chrome and Nord VPN are allowed to access my internet data network while Telegram desktop and MegaSync are denied access my Internet data

Procedure
1. Open your browser and login to your Udemy account.

2. Navigate to your course of choice (which you have enrolled for).

3. Press the F12 button or use the keys combination: “Shift + Ctrl + I” to open the Inspect page. You can equally right click on the course page and select “Inspect“.

4. Click on the “Application” button on the far right of the Inspect screen.

5. Click to expand the “Cookie” menu and select the Udemy website.

6. Under the filter box, type in “Token” and select the first option, “access_token“.

7. Double click on the access_token keys outside the table and press “Ctrl + C” to copy the token to the clipboard for use later on.

8. While you are on this page, click on the browser address bar and copy the link of the Udemy course

Setup Your Google Colab Script

The next step is to setup your google colab script. This is what we shall be using to download the courses. I will publish another post on the various uses of Google colab. But for now, let’s ride on.

1. Visit the Google colab page.

2. Download the ipython notebook we are going to use to run these script from this link. Alternatively click on this link to run my Google colab directly.

3. Click on the upload tab in your Google colab and navigate to where you stored the download notebook in step 2 above

4. Let’s first initialize our Google colab so it doesn’t use our local Internet data bandwidth.

5. Go to the “Runtime” tab and select “Change runtime type” from the dropdown list. In the dialogue box that pops up, select, “GPU” as the Hardware accelerator. Click on save.

6. On the far left, click on connection and select “Connect to hosted runtime”.

7. The difference between hosted and local runtimes is this: Hosted runtime makes use of Google colab resources while local runtime makes use of your local resources. Resources here refer to your computer CPU, RAM and internet bandwidth.

8. Now run the cell in the first box. This will download all the requirements we need. It’s just a few megabytes in size. It’s a one-time thing.

9. Click to run the script in the 2nd and 3rd cells one after the other. This will mount your Google Drive onto Google colab. To complete this process, click on the link provided in the box and select your Google account of choice (if you are logged in to several accounts on your browser). Accept all the prompts and finally copy the authorisation code at the end. Paste the authorisation code into the box provided near the script and press “Enter”.

10. Run the 4th cell to mount your Google drive. Note that by default, the mount point is in My Drive. You can change this though if you need to download the courses into your TD.

11. Finally modify the last cell according to your preferences and run the script. You can run the following modifications as explained below:

12. Paste the website page link to the udemy course you copied in the step above into the “Course_url” box.

13. To change the default download directory from your Google My Drive to your TD, do the following.

14. Click the folder icon on the left side of the screen. This lists all your drives including your TD if any. Navigate to the TD you wish to use as your download destination, right click on it and select “New Folder”. Name the folder “udemy-dl”. Right-click on the newly created folder and select “Copy path”. Paste this copied path into the “Download_Dir” box

15. Paste the access token you copied above into the “Access_Token” box and finally select the video quality of your choice.

16. Now click to run the script and see the seamless process of download unfold

17. All you need to change when you are done downloading a course and need to download the next course is: the course url and the access token. All other settings remain unchanged.

Conclusion

The entire initial setup won’t take you 10 minutes. Once you are done, it’s a walk in the park. Use this guide and this opportunity to download and archive all the courses you are interested in. The university system has a structure that allows sabbaticals (every 7 years a lecturer can spend 1 year lecturing elsewhere), external examiners for final year projects and professional exams, visiting lecturers, special occasions like excursions or off station classes (French students go to French village Badagry or Lome) etc etc. In all these situations the lecturer draws special allowances. If you inaugurate IPPIS, these allowances will show up as suspicious transactions.
STUDENTS WILL END UP SUFFERING FOR WHAT YOU PEOPLE ARE DOING.

Sabbatical lecturers earn full time salary for 1 Yr frm the place they work as sabbatical staff. This is a legally provided for.

Visiting lecturers earn half their salary from the visiting institutions in addition to the full pay frm their places of primary employment. Now the law provides for how visitation to different universities should work both in terms of distance frome ones primary place of employment and the number of institutions to visit. Almost all lectures don't obey these laws.

You find a single lecturer visiting at 3 to 4 sister Universities, invariably blocking the opportunity for others to get employed. Yet we complain of unemployment of our youths. We hv qualified vibrant youths with PhD yearning to take up these positions but these selfish practices hinder them frm doing so.

External examiners and their likes are all given allowances for this task, yet they never fail to extort students. You go pay for virtually everything the external examiner does, sometimes even as high as the registration fees just so he can do his work, all without receipt self. Na like "legalised bribe". No one tells you about these extra fees b4 u start d program ó.

I can go on and on but make i stop here. Nigerians are the true definition of selfishness and self centredness. When they want to be called to order, they whip up public sentiments and sympathy.

Some Unproductive Profs should retire at 70 yrs, when dey hv next to zero research output, grant attraction and teaching output. Na salary dem just dey earn. Yes there experience is important ironically but not in Nigeria, where such experience is not put to good use.

Yes the IPPIS may not be perfect. It takes time to perfect such a system and the govt isn't against modifications to accommodate the peculiarities of academic staff. Instead of them to work together with govt to improve the system them dey there they cry wolf.

You guys keep shouting that buyers are callous in their bargain. Sellers are also not helping matters with their asking prices. It takes two to tango you know.

Some buyers price ridiculously low. Some ehn, their price lowballing is epic. As a rule, when I ask a seller what his selling price is and I find it to be above my budget or over priced, I just thank him for his time and tell him I will take a pass. Often times, they are the ones who would want to persuade me to state a price I am willing to pay. I still don't cos saying it is tantamount to lowballing. I hv come to realise that some sellers actually use this trick as some sort of market survey to help them arrive at the final price to sell their goods to the average highest bidder without selling at a loss.

Some sellers too are outrightly bent on exploiting their prospective buyers ignorance about the prices of items on sale. A particularly funny advertorial I see here is sellers describing their goods as "as good as new" or some even Tag used items as being "new" . A good example is the used inverter/battery setup posted a page back (apology to the poster). How can you call an inverter you hv used "new". Iffa hia!!! 9ja I hail. Na only for 9ja you go see sellers dey describe their goods like that.
