PoliticsTurai Sneaks Into Nigeria, Removes Vital Documents From Aso Rock by edwin101(op): 6:04pm On Jan 12, 2010
Wife of the sickly Nigerian President, Hajia Turai Yar’Adua had penultimate week sneaked into the country at the wee hours of the night, headed straight to the Presidential Villa and allegedly took away some vital documents, highly placed sources told pointblanknews.com.

Sources hinted that Hajia Yar’Adua sensing that her years as first lady was coming to an end owing to the chronic illness of President Yar’Adua, is desperate to clear everything capable of indicting the Yar’Adua family of corruption.

Saharareporters.com had earlier reported that the Turai Yar’adua had ordered “the removal of a cache of gold and diamond kept in the inner recesses of the presidential villa. The precious metals, described by our sources as “large in quantity,” are tied to a business co-owned by Turai and her daughter, Nafisat Yuguda, but run on their behalf by a Lebanese businessman Joseph Zeitoun and his Nigerian wife, Zainab Zeitoun.

Pointblanknews.com had also reported in December 8, 2009 that Mrs. Yar’Adua was set to return to the country after spending sleepless nights by her husband’s side in a Saudi Hospital.

However, it was gathered that not even Vice President Goodluck Jonathan was aware of the nocturnal visit of the first lady which lasted for few hours until some top security officials briefed him.

The first lady who had planned her return trip since December 9, 2009, had to reschedule when it was made public in the press. She was said to have departed Saudi Arabia few days later with the Presidential Jet. She spent not more than three hours in the Presidential Villa and was seen carrying some items suspected to be files according to a security source who hinted Pointblanknews.com.

The source informed Pointblanknews.com that only the Minister for Agriculture, Abba Ruma who made arrangement for her pick up from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, and few other close associates knew about her visit.

Sources hinted that the Yar’Adua’s have some vital documents in the Presidential villa that may potentially be used against them as they feared the President may not make it back to the seat of power.

The Nigeria’s first lady is considered as one of the most corrupt in history with allegations that she receives kick-backs from contracts awarded by the Federal Government to her anointed companies, shady deals at the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, the Agriculture Ministry, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Ministry amongst others

PoliticsRe: Abdulmutallab Indicted By Us Jury, Faces Life Jail by edwin101(op): 7:51pm On Jan 07, 2010
It is diversionary and a shameful evasion for Gowon and Onovo to allude that AbdulMutallab\'s unfortunate action was as a result of his long sojourn outside Nigeria. Nobody has bordered to ask why the young man was abandoned at a very tender age by his parents/nation to \"teachers\" in Lome and other foreign towns/nations all in the quest of attaining academic excellence. What did Gowon do for nine years as a Head of State to develop education in Nigeria? What is even happening now? Nigerians are only reaping what corrupt, dull and visionless leadership had sown and are still sowing (Yar\'adua and his rowdy Federal Executive Council).Yesterday it was Professor Adeniran and his son, today it is the Mutallabs and tomorrow will unfold others. It is my belief that one day Nigerians shall overcome
PoliticsAbdulmutallab Indicted By Us Jury, Faces Life Jail by edwin101(op): 7:48pm On Jan 07, 2010
Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab has been indicted by a federal grand Jury in the United States for trying to down a transatlantic jetliner on December, 25 2009. He faces life imprisonment if convicted. This comes as former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon asked the US to formally apologise to Nigeria for lumping it with countries that are suspected of habouring terrorists and remove the country from the terror list drawn up this week. Also, the Inspector General of Police (IG) Ogbonna Onovo insisted that Nigeria is not a haven for terrorists. He said the country has a “zero tolerance policy towards all forms of terrorism and terrorism acts.” The 23-year-old is currently being held in Milan, Michigan, after he was charged for attempting to detonate an explosive aboard Northwest/Delta Detroit-bound airline. USA Today reported that he was charged on six counts for alleged terrorism attack. The bomb which was hidden in his underpants failed to detonate and he was overpowered by other passengers when they heard a noise like firecrackers coming from his seat. But Gowon made his views known when he paid a condolence visit to former military President, General Ibrahim Babangida in Minna, Niger State.

“From all indication and even as revealed by investigations, Umaru Farouk was not influenced by Nigeria but by his stay in other countries abroad so the US should reverse their decision and make a formal apology to the entire country,” he said. The former head of state stated that the US decision is “unfair, unjust and unkind”. He argued that the action of AbdulMutallab who has been charged with trying to down a transatlantic jetliner on Christmas day is not enough to blacklist the country. He stated that current situation could not continue given the “exceptional” relationship between both countries. Nigeria should not be punished for the offence of one man, he added. “The action of this unfortunate young man was condemned by not only his father, his relations but the more that 120 million Nigerians so there is no reason for the action by the US because no Nigerian is in support of his actions,” he said. He asked Nigerians to pray for the country in order to avert unfortunate incidents that would smear its image. Meanwhile, Onovo continued to defend Nigeria in a statement yesterday. A statement signed by the Assistant Commissioner of Police and Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, declared that Nigeria abhors all such activities. “The Nigerian people, Nigerian parents, Nigerian guardians, Nigerian families, Nigerian communities and the Nigerian government cannot brook terrorist acts in any shape,” said the IG. He said that although terrorism had never been an issue in the country, “it is far-sighted of the police leadership that it has established an Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), which works closely with our intelligence officers all over the nation”. The IG argued that ATS officers had received the best training in the world and are therefore ready and equal to the task in terms of fighting terrorism in the country.

On whether AbdulMuttallab was working in concert with some other Nigerian nationals, the statement said the “suspect was certainly working with non-Nigerians. The young man must have been brainwashed and indoctrinated abroad, not here. He has lived much of his life abroad. “Ours is a pluralistic society. Our 140 million people have long imbibed the philosophy of live-and-let-live as an article of faith.” Onovo said the fact that the suspect’s father, Umar Mutallab, reported his son to the US embassy confirms the attitude and philosophy of Nigerians toward acts of terror. He stated that the Nigeria Police Force is committed to peaceful co-existence through the maintenance of the rule of law and order. “The Nigeria Police Force is committed to the tradition of peaceful and harmonious co-existence through the maintenance of law and order,” he said. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) yesterday after its meeting in Abuja described the move as a disappointment and undeserving of a nation like Nigeria. Addressing State House correspondents at the end of its meeting, the Minister of Information and Communications, Prof Dora Akunyili, alongside her colleagues, Minister of Power, Lanre Babalola and the Minister of State for Information and Communications, Alhaji Ikra Bilbis, the FEC resolved that the US move could undermine good relations between both countries. She went on to point out that Nigeria had signed and ratified 16 United Nations (UN) and African Union (AU) instruments on counter-terrorism. These instruments, according to her, deal with issues of drug trafficking, money laundering, nuclear terrorism and crime. This record, she said, is in addition to the country’s role in international peacekeeping. Nigeria has expressed “deep sorrow and dismay” since the incident happened while also condemning it.

On steps taken to safeguard our airports, she disclosed that the government had ordered eight body scanners adding that they are expected to arrive in two weeks time. In addition, the Federal Airports Authority has announced the receipt of 20 metal detectors aimed at boosting security measures, she said. Asked if President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua indeed spoke to key members of the cabinet as claimed by the Chief Economic Adviser, Tanimu Yakubu, she answered in the affirmative. Nigeria has been named by the US among “countries of interest” alongside Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Algeria, Yemen, Somalia, Libya, Lebanon and Pakistan. Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria are viewed as “state sponsors of terrorism.”

PoliticsUmar Farouk Abdulmutallab Faces A Sentence Of Life In Prison by edwin101(op): 12:39am On Jan 07, 2010
(CNN) -- The suspect in the failed Christmas Day bombing of a U.S. airliner faces a six-count federal indictment issued Wednesday, including an attempt to murder the other 289 people aboard.
The seven-page indictment charges Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction; attempted murder within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States; willful attempt to destroy and wreck an aircraft within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States; willfully placing a destructive device in, upon and in proximity to an aircraft within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States; and two counts of possession of a firearm/destructive in furtherance of a crime of violence.
Read the indictment
If convicted, the 23-year-old Nigerian national faces a sentence of life in prison.
The indictment said AbdulMutallab boarded Northwest Airlines Flight 253 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on December 25, carrying a concealed bomb concealed in his clothing and designed to be detonated "at a time of his choosing."
Authorities say the bomb components included Pentaerythritol (also known as PETN, a high explosive), as well as Triacetone Triperoxide (also known as TATP, a high explosive) and other ingredients.
The indictment said that, just before the jet landed at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Michigan, "AbdulMutallab detonated the bomb, causing a fire on board flight 253." The device failed to fully detonate, instead setting off a fire at the man's seat.
He was subdued and restrained by the passengers and flight crew. The airplane landed shortly thereafter, and he was taken into custody by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers.
AbdulMutallab required medical treatment and was transported to the University of Michigan Medical Center after the plane landed.
Explosives expert Sydney Alford said AbdulMutallab probably used a liquid contained in a syringe to mix with a chemical he was carrying to create a fire, which was intended to ignite the TATP. That, in turn, was to detonate the PETN. But the TATP did not ignite as planned, he speculated.

Terrorism
TATP has been cited in several terrorism cases. Najibullah Zazi, the 24-year-old Afghan citizen and U.S. resident who was arrested in September and accused of planning to carry out terrorist acts in the United States, was allegedly trying to make TATP in his motel room in Denver, Colorado.
A new indictment against Richard Reid specifies that the convicted shoe bomber also used TATP.
Judge Nancy Edmunds is assigned to the AbdulMutallab case and will preside over court proceedings, said Gina Balaya, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney, Eastern District, Michigan.
The case was presented Wednesday to the grand jury, which determined probable cause to indict.
Though arraignments are typically held by a magistrate judge, Edmunds may decide, based on the special circumstances and high-profile security related to the AbdulMutallab case, to handle the matter herself, Balaya said. Edmunds is expected to decide Friday on details for the arraignment and AbdulMutallab's detention, Balaya said.
Attorney General Eric Holder said the investigation "has already yielded valuable intelligence that we will follow wherever it leads."
"The attempted murder of 289 innocent people merits the most serious charges available, and that's what we have charged in this indictment," said U.S. Attorney Barbara L. McQuade, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, who is in her first week on the job.

The fact that no one in the government has been able to state authoritatively where the President is currently domiciled is quite unimportant. The fact that the president was unable to present the budget to the senate due to ill-health is a moot point. Yet, he was able to read a 400-page document within minutes and append his signature to it and resign back to coma.

PoliticsFire Razes Ait Station by edwin101(op): 2:06am On Dec 30, 2009
African Independent Television/Ray Power FM office at Alagbado, a suburb of Lagos, went up in flames in the evening on Tuesday. The immediate cause of the inferno could not be immediately ascertained, but a rescue team comprising men from the Federal Fire Service from Lagos and Ogun states were still battling to control the fire as at 5.45 p.m.
The severity of the fire became apparent as both the TV and the radio stations quickly went off the air, while spirited efforts were also being made by concerned individuals and media organisations to alert other various agencies that could assist in putting out the fire.
An employee of the organisation claimed that the fire, which started from the studios, later spread to the library and other essential departments which were completely razed.
All the lighting equipment were razed, while the fire was eventually subdued at about 6.45 p.m.
The chairman of the organisation, Dr. Raymond Dokpesi, was said to be in Abuja at the time of the incident, but one of his wives, Tosin, who is in charge of AIT, was on ground to assess the situation.

PoliticsAbdulmutallab: Yemen Places Embargo On Visa For Nigerian Students by edwin101(op): 1:51am On Dec 30, 2009
TO curb the activities of student-terrorists, the Yemeni government said, on Tuesday, that it was tightening restriction on student visas like the one that allowed Farouk Abdulmutallab to enter Yemen.
It also denied knowledge of Abdulmutallab’s terrorist link in Yemen, but confirmed that Abdulmutallab spent two extended periods in Yemen. Disclosing this to the The Associated Press through its Information Minister, Hassan al-Lozy, the government said Abdulmutallab’s most recent stay in Yemen was from August to December to study Arabic at San’a Institute for the Arabic Language, where students and administrators reportedly described him as “friendly and outgoing with no overtly extremist views.”
He said the Yemeni government was trying to determine what he did during his periods of stay in their country. According to Al-Lozy, “Abdulmutallab lived in Yemen for two different periods of time, a year, from 2004-2005 and from August-December this year.”
He said he arrived in August after receiving a visa to study Arabic in the capital, San’a. Yemen’s Foreign Ministry had earlier on Monday confirmed that Abdulmutallab received a Yemeni visa after authorities were reassured that he had “several visas from a number of friendly countries.”
The Foreign Ministry noted that Abdulmutallab had a valid visa to the United States, which he had visited in the past. It said the embassy had now been instructed not to issue any more visas to students who want to study in the country without the Interior Ministry’s approval.
The principal of the school where he studied was being questioned on Tuesday. A United States federal court in Detroit said a hearing, which was scheduled for Monday for the trial of Abdulmutallab had been delayed until January 8. No reason was given for the delay.
Prosecutors wanted a DNA sample from Abdulmutallab. Meanwhile, the Minister of Information and Communications, Professor Dora Akunyili, on Tuesday, provided insight into how Abdulmutallab dissociated himself from his family.
Akunyili said he had earlier told his parents he was going to Dubai for his masters programme, but changed his mind and said he would stay back in Nigeria to study the Shariah legal system for seven years.
According to the minister, the parents, unwilling to indulge Abdulmutallab, disapproved of the plan and this angered him, consequently sending a message to his parents that he would not correspond with them again.
The minister, who added that the screening measures at the Nigerian Airports were intact, said Abdulmutallab was properly monitored through the closed circuit television installed at the airport.
Meanwhile, leader of United States House of Representatives security committee has said that Abdulmutallab should be tried in a military, and not a civilian court.
The official said this became necessary, because it would be difficult to extract enough evidence from the accused if he is tried by the ordinary court.
