Mr Patel stated this during his confirmation hearing before the U.S. Senate on January 30, 2025.

He was grilled about his role in the secret operation to rescue Philip Walton, a 27-year-old son of American missionaries who had been kidnapped by armed bandits from the neighbouring Niger and moved to northern Nigeria for ransom.

“The operation lasted for 60 seconds,” Mr Patel told the U.S. Congress on Thursday.

He was further grilled about his alleged carelessness in parroting a false approval that the Nigerian government had given the SEAL Team Six clearance to use the Nigerian airspace. Mr Patel was the brain behind the rescue operation, having obtained intelligence on the location where Mr Walton was being held.

He saw the opportunity for the Seal Team Six to strike given the bandits could move Mr Walton to a new location.

It was while the aircraft was aboard with agents mid-air that the U.S. senior officials learnt that the Nigerian government had not yet granted the Navy SEALs clearance to use their airspace, let alone land.


Then-Defence Secretary, Mark Esper, in his memoir, noted it was one of Mr Patel’s numerous slip-ups and that he was highly concerned for the SEALs, particularly whether they would get shot down from the unauthorised mission.

“I was concerned that being packed in an aircraft burning holes in the sky for an extra hour or so would wear on the special operators, that it might affect their readiness somehow,” ABC cited Mr Esper’s memoir recounting the op.

Mr Esper said the SEALs had their suspicions that Mr Patel fabricated the clearance he said the Nigerian government gave them.

“My team suspected Patel made the approval story up, but they didn’t have all the facts,” Mr Esper wrote.

Mr Patel refuted the allegations in his own book “Government Gangsters” claiming there were persons who tried to undermine the president’s agenda by raising roadblocks to counterterrorism missions in Africa and the Middle East.

The operation was eventually a success after the State Department intervened and acted swiftly to obtain airspace permission from the Nigerian authorities before the Navy SEALs landed.

Mr Patel has faced significant opposition in his quest to become FBI director and it is yet unclear whether he answered the queries satisfactorily.

The 37-year-old has spoken in several interviews about the special relationship between him and the current Fenerbahce manager.

According to the former Super Eagles star, Mourinho didn't only influence his life on the pitch but off it as well.

Speaking on his Obi One podcast, Mikel named 'The Special One' as the manager who had a significant impact on his career.

He further disclosed that Mourinho was even interested in how he spent his salary.

George, who spoke on Arise TV on Friday, accused the then-national chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu and Atiku, of orchestrating the problem in the PDP, saying they disrupted the party’s zoning arrangement.

The elder statesman attributed the unresolved crisis in the PDP to the outcome of the party’s national convention in 2022, adding that he temporarily supported Wike and his group during the build-up to the 2023 general election because the party’s top positions were zoned to the northern region.

“The presidential candidate went to the northern zone, and the chairman of the party also went to the same zone; we said no, it can’t happen like this.

“That was the basis of the party’s crisis. I didn’t just jump ship to be with Wike or Atiku; I had meetings with both of them and Ayu; they disrupted the system,” he said.

George explained that before taking sides with Wike, he tried to persuade Atiku and Ayu to reason with him, but they didn’t listen.

The Lagos-based politician said he took sides with Wike because he was disgusted with what Atiku and Ayu did at the convention.

He, however, noted that he dumped Wike’s group when he realised they wanted to support Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

“And when Wike people came, we had a meeting, and they made me a leader. In the end, we had two presidential candidates from the South, and they said they believed that Bola was the better person.

“I told them that if they stepped out of this meeting and talked about it outside there, I would counter you. You guys have no idea who this gentleman (Tinubu) is. He had ruled my state (Lagos), and we know his modus operandi,” George added.

Speaking on the state of the nation, George reminded Tinubu that Nigerians are hungry and angry.

Addressing journalists in Lagos on Friday, the PDP chieftain called on the president to resolve the economic situation in the country.

He said: “My message to Tinubu is very clear: Nigerians are hungry and angry. This is the time, as the Commander in Chief and the Chief Driver of the economy, to do something about the economic malaise in our country. You must alleviate the suffering of the people now.

“There is no separate market for APC and PDP members. All Nigerians go to the same market. Everybody is feeling the anti-people policies of this government. Bola Tinubu must pause today and reflect: are people benefiting from the policies of my administration?

“When he came in 2023, a litre of petrol was less than N200 and in the exchange rate market, Naira was less than N800 to a dollar. What do we have today? What exactly is the economic policy of this administration? President Tinubu, Nigerians demand a quick answer to this important question.

“Finally, my concern is this: What will happen to our country if this wind of the New World Order blows across our Nation.

“With the Francophone countries surrounding us with political instability and a big quarrel with France, their colonial master, are we ready to remain stable and be strong? Let’s start this discussion now as a stitch in time saves nine.”

APC said Atiku, Obi, and El-Rufai have shown grass incompetence and failure to manage their own affairs.

In a statement by its spokesman, Felix Morka, APC said Nigerians can’t be distracted by desperate politicians looking for relevance ahead of 2027.

Morka faulted Atiku’s remark of judicial involvement in Nigeria’s electoral matters, stressing that he is the country’s most prolific electoral litigator.

According to Morka: “It is a thing of irony that Atiku, who is Nigeria’s most prolific electoral litigator, would make such a ludicrous claim that judicial involvement in electoral matters is a threat to democracy.

“His criticism of the courts and the electoral process rings hollow given his long history of using the courts to further his political agenda. It’s time for him to take a step back and let the democratic process unfold without his interference.

“Nigeria’s democracy is far stronger than Atiku’s political ambitions. We deserve better than petty politicking and alarmist rhetoric from an elder statesman.

“As a veteran politician, one would expect Atiku to understand that while democracy may be about winning election, it is, more importantly, about respecting the will of the electorate and working towards the greater good of all.

“Atiku should focus on rebuilding his party and offering constructive solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.

“The bizarre suggestion by opposition figures like Atiku, Peter Obi, and recently, aggrieved leaders like Mallam Nasir El-Rufai that our great Party may be complicit in the internal corrosion of opposition parties is pitiful, and only an incompetent alibi for their crass failure to manage their own affairs. They cannot govern their parties but tout their ability to govern Africa’s most populous country.

“As discerning citizens, Nigerians know better than to be distracted by the false alarm and hollow allegations of desperate politicians whose only goal is shore up their political relevance in the build up to 2027 general elections.”

The group in a communique on Tuesday said the fair hearing of the separatist leader may no longer be guaranteed due to controversial and conflicting legal proceedings in different courts.

The communique was issued after its general meeting – presided over by the group’s deputy leader Oba Oladipo Olaitan – held at Isanya-Ogbo, the hometown of its leader, Ayo Adebanjo.

In the statement signed by both Olaitan and the National Publicity Secretary of the group Justice Faloye, Afenifere argued that Kanu should be released in the interest of justice and national reconciliation.

Describing Kanu as a political detainee, the group said there is no justification for his continued detention without trial.

“Afenifere notes that from all circumstances, particularly since his abduction in 2021 and repatriation to Nigeria and since then subjected to controversial and conflicting legal proceedings in different courts by which his fair trial may no longer be guaranteed in the opinion of reasonable members of the public, it is clear that Nnamdi Kanu is undoubtedly a political detainee,” the communique reads.

“There is no justifiable reason to continue to keep him in detention without trial,” the communique added.

The association also appointed lawyer Dele Farotimi as the National Organising Secretary of Afenifere.

“The General Meeting considered and approved the appointment of Barrister Dele Farotimi as the National Organising Secretary of the Afenifere,” it stated.

Afenifere also reiterated the call for state police, saying the vast territory, population, and federation cannot be effectively and meaningfully secured with a single command of unitary police.

“Afenifere reiterates the position that Nigeria with its vast territory, population, and as a federation cannot be effectively and meaningfully secured with a single command unitary police structure and thus the need for the restructuring to ensure immediate constitutional institutionalization of state police.

“The steps will prevent a situation the Governor of Oyo State, even as the Chief Security Officer, had to helplessly and lamentably make an outcry on the infiltration of bandits into his state,” the communique further read.

APC spokesperson Felix Morka stated that Atiku was responsible for the “festering rot” and dysfunction of opposition parties in Nigeria.

Morka was responding to Atiku’s claim that the President Bola Tinubu-led APC had paid opposition leaders N50 million each.

Speaking in Abuja, Atiku also alleged that Nigeria’s democracy was at risk due to the involvement of the judiciary in electoral matters.

In his response, Morka reminded Atiku that the PDP conducted its worst elections in Nigeria’s history during his tenure as Vice President.

In a statement he signed, Morka said:
“The former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 presidential election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, like a badly broken record, has continued to point fingers at the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the festering rot in his party and the spectacular dysfunction of opposition parties generally.

“At the national conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria held in Abuja on Monday, 27 January 2025, Atiku warned that the nation’s democracy was somewhat imperilled by judicial involvement in electoral matters. Also, without a shred of evidence, Atiku alleged that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was paying certain opposition leaders a whopping N50 million each to disorganise opposition parties in the country.

“It was during Atiku’s era as Vice President, particularly in 2003 and 2007, that the PDP conducted the worst elections in our political history. We cannot possibly forget how Atiku’s PDP heavy-handedly captured most South-West states and vowed to remain in power for 60 years. It was in those same years that Atiku’s former boss, then-President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, infamously described elections as a ‘do or die affair’ in a desperate attempt to annex Lagos. If democracy was neither derailed nor endangered in those perilous days, is it now, when elections are far freer, fairer, and more credible, that Nigeria risks losing democracy?

“The judicial branch of government is a constitutional creation, like the executive and legislative branches, with constitutionally defined powers to adjudicate disputes among citizens and between citizens and the state. Atiku cannot wish away or seek to abolish the courts’ enshrined powers to intervene in civil disputes, including electoral disputes, when their authority is validly invoked by a litigant.

“Atiku’s allegation that the APC-led administration is paying out N50 million to some opposition figures is simply bogus and laughable. Atiku knows that his political desperation is responsible for the PDP’s catastrophic disintegration.

“Peddling rumours and unsubstantiated allegations should be beneath anyone of the standing of an elder statesman, a former Vice President, and a serial contestant for the exalted office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The statement comes after the ex-governor took a swipe at his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, accusing it of abandoning its founding principles and fostering poor leadership.

El-Rufai also described the state of governance and opposition in the country as a “national emergency”.

However, in a post on his X handle on Tuesday, Bwala questioned if El-Rufai would have expressed the same position if he were in the government.

“History is replete with examples. It is a government you participated in its formation, that you now want to unseat,” Bwala posted on X.

Atiku disclosed this at a national conference on strengthening democracy, organized by various civic organizations in Abuja on Monday.

He, however, cautioned that Nigeria’s democracy was at risk of collapse if urgent action wasn’t taken.

According to Atiku: “I want to say it here publicly. I met with a political party leadership in the present opposition, and they told me flatly that this government gives them N50 million each.

“If we are not careful, we are talking to some of you here, but you are recipients of the N50 million from the APC government. Do we really want to fight for democracy?”

Atiku lamented the erosion of democratic values, criticizing the current National Assembly as a “rubber stamp” for the government and raising doubts about the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral umpire.

He cited an example from Turkey, where the electoral body refused to declare a president-elect who fell short of the required vote threshold, as a benchmark of integrity Nigeria should emulate.

Calling for opposition parties to unite, he reflected on his decades-long struggle for democracy, noting personal sacrifices, including an attempt on his life, the seizure of his businesses, and exile.

“If we don’t unite and take action, we may end up with no democracy at all. God forbid,” Atiku said.
