Foreign AffairsTrump Asks US Supreme Court To Pause Law Threatening Tiktok Ban by Edygrin(op): 10:16am On Dec 28, 2024
US President-elect Donald Trump filed a brief Friday urging the Supreme Court to pause a law that would ban TikTok the day before his January 20 inauguration if it is not sold by its Chinese owner ByteDance.

In light of the novelty and difficulty of this case, the court should consider staying the statutory deadline to grant more breathing space to address these issues,” Trump’s legal team wrote, to give him “the opportunity to pursue a political resolution.”

Trump was fiercely opposed to TikTok during his 2017-21 first term, and tried in vain to ban the video app on national security grounds.

The Republican voiced concerns — echoed by political rivals — that the Chinese government might tap into US TikTok users’ data or manipulate what they see on the platform.

US officials had also voiced alarm over the popularity of the video-sharing app with young people, alleging that its parent company is subservient to Beijing and that the app is used to spread propaganda, claims denied by the company and the Chinese government.

Trump called for a US company to buy TikTok, with the government sharing in the sale price, and his successor Joe Biden went one stage further — signing a law to ban the app for the same reasons.

Reversing course

Trump has now, however, reversed course.

At a press conference last week, Trump said he has “a warm spot” for TikTok and that his administration would take a look at the app and the potential ban.

Earlier this month, the president-elect met with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.

Recently, Trump told Bloomberg he had changed his mind about the app: “Now (that) I’m thinking about it, I’m for TikTok, because you need competition.”

"If you don’t have TikTok, you have Facebook and Instagram — and that’s, you know, that’s Zuckerberg.

Facebook, founded by Mark Zuckerberg and part of his Meta tech empire, was among the social media networks that banned Trump after attacks by his supporters on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The ban was driven by concerns that he would use the platform to promote more violence.

Those bans on major social media platforms were later lifted.

– ‘Unprecedented’ –

In the brief filed on Friday, Trump’s lawyer made it clear the president-elect did not take a position on the legal merits of the current case.

President Trump takes no position on the underlying merits of this dispute,” John Sauer wrote in the amicus curiae — or “friend of the court” — brief.

Instead, he respectfully requests that the court consider staying the act’s deadline for divestment of January 19, 2025, while it considers the merits of this case, thus permitting President Trump’s incoming Administration the opportunity to pursue a political resolution of the questions at issue in the case.

A coalition of free speech groups — including the American Civil Liberties Union — also filed a separate brief to the Supreme Court opposing enforcement of the law, citing censorship concerns.

Such a ban is unprecedented in our country and, if it goes into effect, will cause a far-reaching disruption in Americans’ ability to engage with the content and audiences of their choice online,” the rights groups’ filing read, in part.

The US apex court agreed last week to hear TikTok’s appeal against Biden’s move to force its owner to divest from it or face a ban.

With oral arguments scheduled for January 10, the case would have to be heard at a breakneck speed.

TikTok argues that the law, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, violates its First Amendment free speech rights.

AFP, among more than a dozen other fact-checking organizations, is paid by TikTok in several countries to verify videos that potentially contain false information.

Celebrities'Burna Boy Gave Police Bundles Of Money’ – Speed Darlington’s Lawyer Alleges by Edygrin(op): 9:50am On Dec 28, 2024
Lawyer to the embattled singer, Speed Darlington, Stan Alieke, has expressed his frustration in trying to get his client released from police custody.

The lawyer spoke following Darlington’s continued detention by the police despite being granted bail by the court on December 23, 2024.

DAILY POST reports that the singer was rearrested on November 27, over allegations of cyberstalking Burna Boy.

Barely a month after his arrest, the Federal High Court in Abuja granted him bail on Monday, December 23, but his continued detention after the court order has sparked outrage among his supporters and legal team.

While updating the public on the singer’s case on Friday, Alieke who noted that he has exhausted all his connections, also accused the police of disobeying the order of the Federal High Court.

In a now trending video shared on his Instagram page, the lawyer insinuated that Burna Boy might have bribed the police to keep Darlington behind bars.

"We have done everything a lawyer should do to get his clients out. I have even exhausted all my connections. I have reached out to my political friends here in Abuja. The police have refused to obey the court order. There’s no justification for not obeying the court that granted Darlington bail.

The first time he was arrested in October, Burna came there with his team and I was also there with Akpi and some of my staff. After the meeting, I saw Burna sharing bundles of cash with the police and the police were asking for selfies. I told my staff that, see, if this guy makes a mistake again, these people will drill him.

Akpi do your shows in Nigeria, go back to the US and sue Burna in the USA for all he is worth, if you can.

Send lawyers to check his Tax files and accounts for illegal inflow from Yahoo boys. You can catch him unclean.

If it is not murder case, the police had no right to keep you in detention for 1 month in Nigeria.

This same Burnaboy oppressed a young man in a club last year by ordering the man's wife to come sit on his lap, and having his police men shoot the man.. He ran away to Spain after that, and possibly bribed the police to kill the matter. He was never arrested for assaults.

I hate oppression. Akpi don't forgive and don't forget..Fight him in the US where the legal system works and the police are not as corrupt. Let him spend that hard currency dollars fighting you off in the USA..

There are lawyers who will take your case for free against the moneybag that throws money around.. Put all his accounts and Tax files under the microscope. Yahoo money, drug money or cult money must have gone through his account. He is not clean. Talk to your lawyer in the USA, and find a way to pin him down and make him pay.

PoliticsHerdsmen Will Pay Dearly For Christmas Day Attack In Benue - Gov. Hyacinth Alia by Edygrin(op): 11:06am On Dec 27, 2024
Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has expressed deep sadness over the unprovoked attacks on Anwase community in Kwande Local Government Area Benue State, where about 11 innocent residents were gruesomely murdered by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

DAILY POST earlier reported that the incident happened on December 25 when the people were celebrating Christmas with their families.

Reacting, Alia in a statement by his media aide, Tersoo Kula, expressed worry that such a heinous act has continued in the state despite the efforts of his administration to ensure the safety of his people.

He, however, vowed that the perpetrator of the dastardly act will be brought to book, saying “they will pay dearly for it”.

He said, “I can assure you, the perpetrators of this act will pay dearly for it. They may think they are not known, but they cannot be allowed to continue perpetrating this. It’s a matter of time”.

He condoled with the families that have lost their loved ones in the attack and equally sympathizes with those injured, saying his thoughts of comfort and prayers are with them at this difficult time, promising to ensure the perpetrators are equally brought to face the full wrath of the law.

PoliticsNo Regret Supporting Tinubu, Says Wike by Edygrin(op): 7:27am On Dec 27, 2024
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says he has no regret for supporting President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 general elections.

Prior to his ministerial appointment, he governed the oil-rich Rivers State for eight years under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform. He was later called by Tinubu to serve as FCT Minister in the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Federal Government.

Speaking during a thanksgiving service in Ochigba by the PDP in Ahoada East and West Local Government Areas of the state, he thanked President Tinubu for believing in him.

Wike said that he was threatened before the presidential elections for supporting Tinubu, adding that he would do the same thing if another opportunity comes.

I have no regrets, I have no apologies. If the opportunity comes I will do the same thing,” he said.

Land Grabbing

He also dismissed allegations of land grabbing levelled against him by some residents of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Wike said the right things must be done, adding that those in possession of government land must do the right thing or risk their plots of land revoked.

The minister described as laughable the allegation of land grabbing levelled against him.

I am in charge of lands in Abuja, how will I go and grab what I am in charge of. We must thank Mr President, if he did not use this opportunity, we wouldn’t have known. Here in Rivers State, we thought it was difficult.

When you go to the capital, you know you are dealing with the entire Nigerians. I can assure you, no matter the cry you cry, no matter the propaganda you carry, if you like give me any name you want to give me, the right thing must be done,” he added.

Politics2027: You Are A Political Refugee, Imposter In NNPP – APC Blasts Kwankwaso by Edygrin(op): 6:00am On Dec 27, 2024
Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former presidential candidate has come under heavy attack by the All Progressives Congres, APC, which described him as a sacked NNPP imposter and a political refugee without value anywhere.

Kwankwaso had boasted that he was going to make APC a non-political issue in Kano by reducing its voting parentage to less than 15, 000 votes in the next general elections in 2027.

However, in a sharp response to his claims, the APC lashed out, describing Kwankwaso’s statement as laughable, coming from somebody who lost a Political Camp after being allegedly sacked from NNPP.

The Chairman of the state chapter, Prince Abdullahi Abass in a statement on Thursday called on Kwankwaso to stop daydreaming and channel his energies towards reclaiming his membership in the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP.

APC described Kwankwaso as a political refugee who has chosen to cling to the state Governor Abba Yusuf like a leech in a futile attempt to regain relevance in the scheme of things in the country.

APC further warned Kwankwaso and his ilks that it would not allow a repeat of the vote manipulation and allocation that created the impression that the NNPP is well rooted in Kano State in the 2023 general election.

"Our teeming supporters in the APC have no cause to worry about Kwankwaso who has been booted out of NNPP due to his cluelessness and self-centeredness. We expect Kwankwaso to keep wondering why he has become a wanderer in the political terrain,” APC noted.

He ran away from APC because he couldn’t fit into our progressive ideals. His over-bloated ego and domineering posture forced him to abandon the PDP and he has now become a political refugee because the NNPP refused to accommodate him.

Abbas claimed that the APC is already waiting in the wing to not only reclaim Kano State but save the people of the state from the undue influence of Kwankwaso from his Miller Road castle.

Recall that Kwankwaso had made his boast while receiving some former councillors and senior special advisers, who served under Abdullahi Ganduje-led administration during a meeting at his residence in Kano, with stakeholders from Tsanyawa Local Government Area.

He credited the hard work of his team during the 2023 elections, which sidelined the Peoples Democratic Party to struggle to secure only 15,000 votes in Kano.

He noted that his party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party “achieved this remarkable feat despite being a new political platform coupled with the late start of its campaign.

Now, it’s our turn to diminish APC’s influence. We will work tirelessly to ensure their votes are reduced to less than 15,000 in Kano come 2027”, Kwankwaso added.

PoliticsIt’s Sad Celebrating Christmas While Nnamdi Kanu Remains In Detention – Ohanaeze by Edygrin(op):
As Christians all over the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the Igbo apex cultural group Ohanaeze Ndigbo said that it is very sad that the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is still in detention.

The Secretary General of Chidi Ibeh led faction of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, in a statement noted that Ohanaeze Ndigbo wishes all Ndigbo both at home and in the diaspora a joyous and fulfilling Christmas season but regretted that prolonged detention of Nnamdi Kanu is worrisome.

He noted with dismay that observations revealed that top political leaders, specifically two serving governors from the zone and a former governor are those behind the continuous detention of the Kanu, noting that they are consumed by their individual ambitions for the 2027 vice president position.

According to Isiguzoro, the public proclamation of “Release Nnamdi Kanu” serves as mere rhetoric while their behind-the-scenes machinations suggest a direct message to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu: “Do not release Nnamdi Kanu immediately”, tagging them as enemies of the Ndigbo.

He maintained that this duplicity poses a grave threat to the peace and stability of the Southeast.

He insisted that the escalating violence and insecurity that plague the Southeast region can be traced back not solely to external influences but to the dereliction of duty by these leaders, who become notable beneficiaries of the security votes allocated to them amid this unrest.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo is unequivocal in stating that the naiveté displayed by some of these politicians regarding Nnamdi Kanu’s release is alarming. Furthermore, one Governor’s neutral stance only underscores their singular focus on securing their own re-election rather than addressing the critical issues facing our people,” he said.

You're just being argumentive and obtuse out of boredom it seem. Where did you read I'm against state police? Poor states can and should establish a police force if they're willing to pay the full cost of policing. The full cost includes prisons which they shouldn't throw on the FG. What reason should they not pay the full cost?
Then what people like you should be advocating for is true federalism so that each state can go back, tab the little resources they have, accrue revenue then pay a certain percentage to the FG so that they can secure themselves instead of waiting for the FG to share allocation. By then they'll be nothing like "poor states" because states will be living within their means and paying salaries within their means.

Saying states that can't afford to have state police or run state prison should follow the status quo is rubbish unless you're part of those benefiting from the insecurity.

And up till this moment non of the state governors have been against state police, non has raised any financial issues about it, I wonder why you're saying all these now when non of the governor is complaining.

Read the original post before asking redundant questions next time. The federal government saves money, the federal prisons won't be over crowded with state law offenders, and the states have more incentive to make reform regarding awaiting trial inmates. The burden should be moved to states especially if it's a state law. An Akwa Ibomites taces shouldn't go to jailing a sharia state alcohol producer and consumer for example.
If it's so rosy for the Federal government then why are you so against state police, you want the national assembly to make it hard for poor states to have state police then go on to blab about how it will benefit the FG if they do. Do you people smoke before creating threads?

You're making noise about how the FG shouldn't fund state prisons blah blah blah forgetting it is the states that is funding the federal government. Without the states, who'll fund the FG?
