Murach is nice, but for beginners, I would suggest that you start with Wrox or Apress series. They make the learning curve much easier to accomplish than the voluminous texts of the likes of Murach and Deitel.
Trust me, for a beginner, stay clear away from Murach and Deitel.

crankie: Yes, it is real. I am one of the past trainees. After the training, I got a customer service job 3 weeks later.

So like how much is the pay of the job they help you to get. Just curious to know cause I'm thinking of doing the training next month. Just want to know before hand, if its worth it; considering that I'm coming from PH to lag for the training.

Get the latest eclipse IDE (juno; last time I checked)
Download the sdk (Google it up or go to android.com)
Make sure you install the usb driver incase you prefer live testing on ur android device(I definitely prefer live testing) to using the AVD.
Get a good book like "Android for total beginners" (like 340 pages; so it should be a quick read in less than a week)
But be aware that you need at least some basic knowledge of Java.
For a quick tutorial that covers the fundamentals of java visit homeandlearn.co.uk
From there on you are good to go.

Just go with Java and you cain't go wrong.
just make sure you start with the latest which is Java7.
Why? Cause for one its the defacto of mobile devices (obviously the direction the world is heading). Also you can use it to program just about any device and any platform.
in addition its still rated one of the highest paying programming skill globally.
