Women folk are really confused beings. A guy I know (tosyne2much, I swear it is not me, lol) was a victim too. And it involved a friend.

With 2.2 you can get a lecturing job in a polytechnic or college of education
for you to get one in a university, u shud have ur masters and probably enrolling for PhD

have seen someone with third class who is now a PhD holder and also a Senior Lecturer in a University.
whereas have seen a first class graduate who couldnt even secure Graduate Assistant job.

Even for a University they don't need an MSc.

A lecturer in a University with a Third Class? This is a first oo. As far as I know, Universities don't employ Third Class graduates even in the non academic cadre.

It is a rule for Universities to retain First Class graduates so far as they show interest. They only need to be in the good books of their HODs.

I also push students with good marks to higher grades but Universities don't do that as they believe it can and will compromise their integrity. It is not easy.

I nearly cried for that lady. She was so brilliant but so unlucky.

I find it funny when people are discriminating against 2.2 graduates forgetting that 0.01 points could stop one from graduating with a particular class of degree.

I graduated with a 4.62 but a lady in my class who is more brilliant and intelligent than I was graduated with 4.48. Officially, I was the best graduating student but I know she was better. I was retained as a GA while she was overlooked simply on account of my certificate not brain. A 2.2 graduate could also be better than a 2.1. The Universities know this, that's why they don't discriminate.

So please, enough of this.

I'm actually in a similar dilemma...
(B.sc Accounting-First class/Best Graduating student , M.sc in view, ICAN in progress, rounding off nysc very soon)

I schooled in a state university however and I'm not an indigene of that state as such I'm wondering how easy/difficult it would be getting in... I applied to start my M.sc there also.. I've always loved teaching people, my only reservation with GA/ lecturing is I really would love to go to the field before coming back to teach others.

for example, I find it amusing that someone who lectures Auditing has never audited any accounts before.. I dont know...

therefore.. would y'all advise a graduate like to work and garner experience or to go straight with my "textbook knowledge"?

Wonderful. State Universities tend to have different rules from Federal Universities; the fact that you're from another state may count against you. But that's not to say that you shouldn't apply. If your state has a University, you can apply there or to any of these new Universities.

Look beyond a GA. With your ICAN and MSc in progress, most Universities will give you an AL.

I agree that it is important to garner 'field' experience before teaching. For example, supervisors of my MSc degrees are both industry men before coming back to the academics. Prof I. Sada worked with NNPC for close to 30 years and Dr KR Finney was a leading expert in Landfill Gas Engineering with DEFRA in the UK. However, experience could be gained 'in service', you can always go to the industry on secondment or leave of absence and garner valuable experience before returning. I worked on secondment with MEL Engineering Services in Birmingham, UK where I worked as Supervisory Environmental Engineer for 2 years. That's why lecturing is such a wonderful profession

A primary school teacher and a university lecturer are both in the same teaching profession and must therefore be trained and registered before they can be called professional teacher fit to be employed to teach into any level of education, appointed or promoted within the school system. Anything short of this is an offense.

He's right in disagreeing. Teaching qualifications are optional in the lecturing profession. Just get a handbook of your school and read through the qualifications of all the principal officers and see how many of them possess any teaching qualifications. I can send you the promotion guidelines (or even the form) of my university, they value computer literacy (it is a promotion requirement) more than teaching qualifications.

I am an Accounting Graduate, GCPA of Over 4.00, holdint two professional certificates, presently pursueing my ICAN, am about starting my M.Sc too.

I will be happy to have a lecturer to put me tru on some issue as regards ds academic career.

Also, if the a diff or discrimination in obtain ones M.Sc from a state university rather than a federal university?

There's no discrimination in studying in a state/federal university. Some schools may discriminate but its the exception rather than a rule.

Yes they can. But he/she can't assume duty until he/she's done with NYSC

Education isn't necessary for a University lecturer. Don't bother yourself with/about it. Focus on more productive things.

Thanks, I gt a point frm this thread, My HOD was my Project supervisor and she evn asked me to present my Project/work at two conferences by November/December this year , Though I'm not in good rapport with her because of the fear of been the HOD, But based on what people have said, I need to be connected to her ASAP.

Yes! You need to, ASAP. You're lucky, the fact that she asked you to even present your work at a conference shows how much she has faith in you. Be like a daughter to her. Be close to her. Just do the needful. There's no harm in stooping low to get what we want, right?

To summarise everything:

To be a GA you need to graduate with a First Class (I did a 4.62), or a 2.1/2.2 with good connections in a department that is understaffed and good performance during the interview. As soon as you enrol for an MSc and successfully finish your coursework, you're good for an AL.

First Class graduates are employed automatically. But even them have to have good rapport with their HODs. Unless prevailed upon, a HOD can tell the school management that 'we are OK in the dept and don't need any more staff, thanks' and there's nothing anyone can do.

The key here is First Class and a rapport with the HOD (or anybody who can influence him). It is easy these days to graduate with a 2.1 or even a first class.

The interview is usually over (let me use that language) 10. First Class degrees are given base marks of 5 (so it is an automatic pass), in addition to your performance, you'll be good for a job. A 2.1 is given the base marks of 4 and a 2.2 is 3.

That may be true. But in today's competitive world, it will give you an edge. It shows you are already thinking ahead and that you are interested in lecturing and research and not just getting the job for daily bread. It's not a requirement.

Yes, I mean you should. They employ a lot of GAs and ALs. No, it doesn't mean that you have to take your Masters there as most of them have not started PG programmes. Apply and continue with your academic endeavours. It will be a plus to you.

Op congrats on your choice of an academic career. There is something missing in the advice you have been getting so far and that is the issue of research. One of the first things you should do besides starting your masters is to try to publish your undergraduate research work in a journal. Your supervisor and possibly your HOD will be more than glad to assist you in this as long as you include them as authors.
As for the rest, getting a job is tough in every field so just pray for the best.
You don't need to wait for advert especially if it's your alma mater.

For a GA, and even AL, research isn't particularly important. Research only becomes an issue when one is applying for LII and above
