I don't think you asked an ignorant question. There are movements on and off the ball by other players that can cutoff a good player like Messi. The Spanish side has done that alot tonight. Even when Messi drops deep to try to pick up the ball sometimes, then you'd find they gave one man chasing and another in front of him...he's got some foul calls in his favor but I think your observation is spot on...he's not been allowed to play as he wants to and I saw his frustration as he walked off at the end of this match.
Perhaps Argentina will come off the blocks with something different in 2nd half to stun Spain with an early goal and hopefully Spain too can tweak their final touches to get an early goal that will open up the game a little more for both sides...
