The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has sacked 29 senior officers for “compromising the national economy”.
Last week, the service sacked 17 junior officers for drug abuse, bribery and forgery.

In a statement on Thursday, Wale Adeniyi, spokesman of the service, said the senior officers were sacked after a disciplinary panel found them guilty of offences bordering on corruption and theft.“Twenty-nine senior officers of the Nigeria Customs Service have been dismissed for various acts of gross misconduct. The dismissed officers are among forty-four (44) senior officers who were punished for actions capable of compromising national economy and security,” he said.

“Ten other officers were retired from service, while the appointment of one was terminated. Four officers were given written warnings to be of better conduct while another four officers who were investigated and tried for some offences were exonerated.”

Adeniyi explained that “four of the officers who got the hammer were of the rank of deputy-comptroller; five – assistant-comptroller; seven – chief superintendent, and four – superintendent, among others.”

He said the process leading to the actions taken on the officers was painstaking and in line with the public service rules (PSR).

“All the officers were served with queries indicating offences committed, before they made appearances before the special investigation committee. The committee’s recommendation was discussed and approved by the customs management,” Adeniyi added.

“The recommendation was thereafter referred to the presidency for ratification, in the absence of a substantive board for the Nigeria Customs Service. All the officers affected in the exercise have been communicated accordingly.

“The comptroller-general warned officers that punitive sanctions will continue to be used to discipline officers who refuse to embrace change.

“Officers affected in this exercise were investigated for involvement in improper examination and release of containers without proper documentation and payment of duties, illegal release of goods in advance before the arrival of vessels, collection of bribe to release prohibited items, release of export prohibitions, fraudulent sale of seized items, use of fake certificates and bribery to secure auctioned goods.”

Is Southeast Most Corrupt Region In Nigeria? EFCC investigating 522 cases in South-East, See Shocking Amount Recovered From The Region

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says it is investigating 522 cases in the South-East. The EFCC zonal head, South-East zone, Mr. Johnson Babalola, said this while addressing journalists in Enugu on Wednesday.

Giving a summary of the Commission’s activities in the South-East, Babalola said some companies linked to serving governors in the zone are under investigation, in connection with money laundering cases. According to him, 36 out of the 522 cases are currently in court. He added that the anti-graft agency has secured 14 convictions in the zone since January 2016. Within the period, the EFCC has recovered about N244.5m, 955,465 US dollars and 10,000 euros in the South-East, while the sum of 130,750 US dollars was forfeited, and paid into the coffers of the Federal Government.

PoliticsKaduna Govt Denies Placing Ban On Shi’ites by eke419(op): 7:20pm On Oct 19, 2016

The Kaduna State Government said on Wednesday that it had not placed any ban on Shi’a Muslims in the state.
Mr Samuel Aruwan, the government spokesman, said at a news briefing in Kaduna, that what the government did, was to declare the operation of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria illegal, as the group was not registered.

“Islamic Movement in Nigeria was never a registered organisation and it refuses to conduct itself with full adherence to the laws of Kaduna State.”He added that the group had consistently blocked roads and inconvenienced road users.
“It occupies without permission, facilities that did not belong to it, and it has ignored the law and neglected the obligations of civility,” he added.

Aruwan said the IMN should follow due process and get the required government certificate for it to operate as an organisation.

He noted that other groups that practice Shi’a Islam were not included in the ban.

The government spokesman also dismissed insinuations that the state was trying to muzzle religious freedom, stressing that the restriction on the IMN had nothing to do with the right to worship.

“The government has a duty to uphold fundamental rights and security of everyone.

“This involves ensuring that nobody exercise their rights in ways that restrict the right of others or subject them to danger, distress or violation of their humanity,” he said.

According to him, all residents are free to practice whatever religion they profess, as guaranteed by the Constitution.

He said government would only interfere if in the exercise of such rights, the person infringed on the rights of others and by putting danger to public order and safety.

“It is the fundamental obligation of the government to preserve the security and uphold the right of all citizens.”

PoliticsPDP Reconciliation Process Suffers Setback, Governors Withdraw by eke419(op): 7:13pm On Oct 19, 2016
https://nignews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/PDP.jpg

The reconciliation process within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may be heading for a fresh deadlock.
This indications follow the sudden cancellation of the inauguration of much anticipated PDP Reconciliation Committee, which was billed to hold yesterday at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.
Leadership gathered that gathering was cancelled after PDP governor’s pulled out of the peace process.

It was also gathered that the governors expressed reservations over the reconciliation with Sheriff citing his insistence on Jimoh Ibrahim as candidate in the Ondo governorship election as against Hon Eyitayo Jegede, who emerged under the platform of Makarfi’s leadership.Source said the governors were miffed that Sheriff would inaugurate a parallel party executive for Delta State, despite the existence of a substantive party executive in the state.

It further gathered that Sheriff was yet to submit the list of his 14 members to form the 28 members peace reconciliation committee ahead of the inauguration yesterday.

A source from the governors, who pleaded anonymity while speaking with some newsmen said, “This was not our agreement. Look at what is happening in Delta State PDP, inaugurating parallel executive and look at what is happening in Ondo, the man is coming out with a different candidate for the state governorship election.

Operatives of the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Rivers State Police Command, on October 18, 2016, smashed a baby factory at Etche LGA, Rivers State, Nigeria where one Reginald Akagbuto and four pregnant teenage girls were arrested. The four pregnant suspects arrested at the baby factory are: Oluchi Okorie, Chidinma Joseph, Ngozi Ekere, and Miracle Michael.

While the male child is for N150,000, the female is for N100,000.They attributed their desire to sell the babies to lack of care and denial from their purported fathers.

Confirming the arrest of the suspects, the Rivers state Public Relations Officer, DSP Omoni Nnamdi said:
“the Commissioner of Police, CP. Francis M. Odesanya, once again wishes to reiterate his earlier stance to deal with all criminal elements in the state and urges the people to have confidence in his ability to reduce crime. PoliticsAny Policeman Checking Vehicle Particulars Is On Illegal Duty – AIG by eke419(op): 5:54pm On Oct 19, 2016
https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Police-checing-car-papers-1.jpg

Ibadan – Mr Dan Bature, an Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police in Charge of Zone 11 comprising Oyo, Osun and Ondo states, says any policeman checking vehicle particulars on the highways is on illegal duty.

Bature said this on Wednesday in Ibadan during a two-day familiarisation visit to Oyo State. He said that the duty of the police was not to check vehicle particulars but to ensure safer roads.

Bature warned policemen against blocking high ways, saying police patrol vehicles were not supposed to be toll gates.

He said the Inspector General of Police (IGP) was committed to changing the negative image of the police and supporting the anticorruption war of the Federal Government.

Bature advised officers unable to key into the laudable initiatives of the IGP to resign from the force.

He said that a lot was expected by the public from the police, adding that this informed the monitoring of officers.

“The Inspector General of Police is determined to improve on your welfare and pursue the increment of your salary.

“But this can only be achieved when the people have good perception about the police, “Bature said.

Earlier, Sam Adegbuyi, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, said that the officers were dedicated and patriotic.

Adegbuyi said that in view of the population of Oyo State, the command needed to create three more Area Commands in addition to the existing four commands.

He commended the AIG, Oyo government and the Police Community Relation Committee for the successes recorded so far in the fight against crime.

PoliticsDefamation: Ex Rivers Governor, Peter Odili Sues Peterside, Claims N6bn Damages by eke419(op): 8:00pm On Oct 11, 2016
https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/peter-odili.jpg

THE former governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili, has dragged the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 election, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, to court for an alleged defamation of character.

Odili, who is claiming the sum of N6bn as damages in the suit, had stated that Peterside, who is the current Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, had defamed him through a newspaper publication (not The PUNCH) in February 2016.The defendant was alleged to have said in a press conference that the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, during a victory thanksgiving service, alleged that Odili helped him (Wike) to secure the judgement that gave him (Wike) victory.

But Odili had described the statement credited to Peterside as false and malicious, maintaining that Wike never said that he (Odili) helped him to secure election victory at the Supreme Court.

However, when the matter came up for hearing on Tuesday, Odili was asked to enter the witness box to adopt his witness statement.

Though the defendant and his counsel were absent in court, the Lead Counsel for the plaintiff, Kanu Agabi (SAN), told the trial judge, Justice Adama Iyayi-Lamikanra, that Peterside was properly served.

Iyayi-Lamikanra, however, adjourned till October 27, 2016, for further hearing of the case.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after court proceedings, Agabi said, “We sued for libel and we called our first witness. We have adjourned for cross-examination till the 27th of October, 2016.

“We felt defamed by their (defendant) publication and we are here to vindicate ourselves.

“You could see that the defendants were not in court, but they have been served; they have been properly served. The court would not have proceeded otherwise.”

PoliticsMy Government Already Fulfilled Six-point Agenda – Fayose by eke419(op): 7:49pm On Oct 11, 2016
https://nignews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/fayose-court-ekiti-1-768x512.jpeg

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, Tuesday declared that his administration’s Six-Point Agenda focusing on empowerment, development of agriculture, infrastructural development, education, science and technology, health and security has been faithfully implemented.
The governor, who spoke through the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Mrs Modupe Alade, in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday while briefing newsmen on activities of the government in the last two years, said his administration has lived up to expectation as one that is labelled ‘Government of Restoration’, two years after coming into office.
Mrs Alade, who was flanked by top government officials, said the achievements of the government could be seen in great improvement in performance of students from the state in public examinations, as well as the provision of social amenities despite lean resources.

“Restoration has come for the education sector under the Ayodele Fayose administration with the record breaking score of 96.48 percent performance of Ekiti Senior Secondary three students in the 2016 National Examinations Council exams, to emerge an enviable first position in Nigeria,”she said. The SSG said the feat was achieved by religiously implementing the recommendations of the Education Summit organised by the state government in September 2015.

“These crystalised in the progressive performance chart of students in public examinations from 29th position with an average 58 percent in 2014 to 18th position with an average 74.5 percent in 2015 and now to the enviable position of first in 2016 with a percentage score of 96.48 percent for the first time in the history of NECO. “Performance in the West African School Certificate Examinations also gives reason to cheer from 25 percent in 2014, to 37 percent in 2015 and now 42 percent in 2016. While for the School of Nursing, it has been a consistent 98 percent pass in 2015 and 2016.

And for the School of Midwifery, it has been all time high of 100 percent score in 2015 and 2016 in national examinations conducted by the National Council of Nurses and Midwives,” she said. Mrs Alade added that economic recession notwithstanding, the state government embarked on and executed a lot of projects across the state. She listed them to include dualisation of roads in Ado, Ikere, Emure, Efon, Ikole, Ise, while a flyover is being built in Ado-Ekiti.

While soliciting support for Governor Fayose, the SSG stated that the administration would not leave any project abandoned, saying before embarking on any project, the administration always ensured that the fund to execute it was already on ground.

PoliticsSecurity: Lagos Plans Recruitment Of 5000 Neighbourhood Watchers by eke419(op): 6:54pm On Oct 11, 2016
https://nignews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Ambode-at-second-Townhall-meeting.jpg

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday disclosed plans to recruit at least 5,000 Neighbourhood Watchers to boost security across the State, with new recruits expected to earn at least N25, 000 monthly with other allowances.Ambode, who spoke at the 3rd Quarter 2016 Town Hall Meeting, held at the Indoor Sports Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, said the neighbourhood Safety Agency Bill which he signed into Law on August 15, 2016, was part of efforts to institutionalise and deepen community policing in the State.

“There is a law that has just been passed which is the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps Law, 2016 and in line with the resolution taken by the House of Assembly yesterday, we would go all out to make sure that this agency is activated and all our neighborhoods will be covered, and then centralize with the State Government with all the necessary equipment and resources to ensure that we establish what we call community policing and that is the way to go.

“We will rebrand Neighborhood Watchers and re-equip them to the level that each Neighborhood Watchers in all the Local Governments will have their vehicles and necessary equipment to complement security. We are also working on employing additional 5,000 Neighborhood Watchers in all our Local Governments and they will be paid by us, while the basic salary for the entrance level will be N25, 000 per month,” the Governor said.

The Governor also disclosed that the State Government would roll out all its empowerment programmes next week.

He said the programmes targeted to assist youths, artisans and the needy become self-reliant have been provided, hence beneficiaries would start getting support from the last quarter of the year.

“We will roll out all our empowerment programmes immediately to assist all our youth, artisans and the needy. The funding for the N500m Lagos State Persons Living with Disability Fund has been provided and beneficiaries will start getting support from this quarter,” Governor Ambode said.

Speaking on the budget performance of the 2016 budget, Governor Ambode disclosed that the State’s budget performance for January to September performed at 69 per cent as against 65 per cent for the same period in 2015.

He said a total of N166.8billion has been spent on capital projects this year, a figure, he said, was more than double the N53.6billion spent for the same period last year.

Governor Ambode said the State generated a total revenue of N97.3billion in the last quarter with an expenditure of expenditure of N110.2billion, noting that the cash reserve of the State has remained positive.

The Governor also disclosed that a total sum of N55billion was expended on capital expenditure in the last quarter.

According to him, the last quarter witnessed a lot of activities from the delivery of massive road infrastructure across the Local Governments in the State as well as the promulgation of the anti-Land Grabbing Law, aimed at making life easier for property owners and a boost in investment activities that will enhance the growth and development potentials in the State.

He expressed optimism that despite the recession, the State’s economy would remain on a strong and sound footing if capital expenditure spending is increased.

“In this quarter, we will concentrate more resources on capital projects. We will put money in the hands of our local contractors and through them stimulate and reflate the economy. Immediate payments will be made to contractors handling health sector and education sector projects within the next two weeks,” Governor Ambode assured.

Speaking on some projects outlined for the next quarter, the Governor said that plans have been concluded to transform the Yaba Bus Park with the provision of modern bus shelters replica of the ones erected at the Tafawa Balewa Square.

Governor Ambode also assured that the road rehabilitation projects ongoing at Adetola Street and Brown Road in Aguda, Surulere as well as Olajuwon and Biney Streets in Yaba would be completed before the end of the present quarter.

He said with the completion and delivery of the first phase of the 114 local government roads last month, the process of bid invitation for the construction of additional 114 roads across the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas would commence within the next three weeks.

“We have commenced a multi-faceted development that will change the face of Lagos Island. We have installed new bus shelters at Tafawa Balewa Square and before the end of December, various projects will be commenced within the National Museum axis, Onikan to Tafawa Balewa Square, and from Lagos House Marina and Freedom Park. By the time we complete these projects, Lagos will become a major tourist destination in West Africa,” the Governor said.

Also speaking during the interactive session at the event witnessed by captains of industries, party chieftains and members of the diplomatic corps, Oba of Lagos, HRM Oba Rilwan Akiolu, lamented the suspension of a bill seeking special status for Lagos by the Senate, but expressed optimism that the bill would still become law in the nearest future.

He said: “The suspension of the bill sponsored by our amiable daughter and wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu is unfortunate but it is better and advisable to let these people know that this is not a matter of quarrel but a question of time. It will definitely happen.”

The monarch, who recalled the history of the agitation for special status for Lagos, urged the promoters of the bill to go back to drawing board and do their homework well before representing it for consideration and passage.

The Governor, who also spoke on the issue, commended Senator Tinubu for her courage to push for the bill, while also lauding the Senate President, Bukola Saraki for his magnanimity in allowing the bill to be presented on the floor of the Senate.

He however expressed optimism that the bill would be reactivated and represented again, saying that the success of the bill was in the overriding interest of Nigerians.

PoliticsHow The Nigerian National Judicial Council Shields Corrupt… by eke419(op): 6:45pm On Oct 11, 2016
https://nignews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/judge.jpg

Law enforcement officers involved in investigating corrupt Nigerian judges arrested over the weekend have told Saharareporters how the main national body saddled with punishing judges have made it impossible to prosecute the judges even after they found guilty by the same body, the National Judicial Council.Law enforcement officers involved in investigating corrupt Nigerian judges arrested over the weekend have told Saharareporters how the main national body saddled with punishing judges have made it impossible to prosecute the judges even after they found guilty by the same body, the National Judicial Council.

They revealed that in the cases of judges arrested over the weekend by the Department of State Security they had written to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed a month earlier regarding the criminal conduct of some of the judges but the CJN who is the presiding chairman at the NJC refused to let the judges be interrogated. They said before the invitation by the DSS; the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had also tried to interrogate judges with whom they found substantial sums of bribe money but the NJC had insisted that the sanctions by the body were sufficient. In most cases, corrupt judges are given compulsory retirement and left to enjoy their loot. The NJC is made up a committee headed by the CJN as chairman while the second most senior judge at the Supreme Court, in this case, Walter Onnoghen is deputy chair, others includes the President of the Court of Appeal, five chief judges of state high courts chosen by the CJN, five legal practitioners and the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court.

The current composition of the NJC also presents a problem, according to an EFCC official some members of the NJC are themselves corrupt and have been shown to be heavily involved in corruption. They pointed to immediate past chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association, Austin Alegeh who has petitions pending at the EFCC accusing him of embezzlement of NBA funds.

Also, another former President of the NBA, Joseph Daudu who chairs the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee has a case against him at EFCC over embezzlement of settlement fees paid to Nigeria by Halliburton.

Ricky Tarfa, a senior lawyer, involved a maze of corrupt activities involving several judges is also a member of Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee, a body saddled with choosing senior lawyers known as “Senior Advocate of Nigeria.” Mr. Tarfa he has retained his position despite being charged with bribery and corruption.

More troubling for law enforcement agents is the attitude of the outgoing CJN who they accused of shielding a judge of the Court of Appeal, Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, who reportedly received N8 million from Mr. Tarfa. Despite her indictment, the CJN has recommended her for elevation to the Supreme Court.A former CJN, Justice Katsina-Alu had also prevented Justice Umaru Eri of the National Judicial Institute in 2011 from honoring an invitation by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission over allegations that N6 billion went missing at his agency. Eri remained as the chairman of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee until his retirement.

One of the cases involving now-retired Justice Gladys Olotu of the Federal High Court in the Abuja Division in 2014 was also cited as the reason the NJC has become a useless body; the judge was found by the EFCC to possess over N2 billion in her bank accounts. As soon as the EFCC summoned her to appear she rushed to the court of Justice Adeniyi Ademola to obtain an order to stop the EFCC from acting on her case. She was later “compulsorily retired” by the NJC. Meanwhile, Justice Ademola was one of the judges arrested over the weekend with $500,000 found in his bedroom.

Soon after seven judges including two Supreme Court justices were arrested in overnight raids carried out by the DSS, the CJN met with President Muhammadu Buhari to ask for their release.

Sources at the Presidency said while President Buhari assured him that the raids were not targeted at the judiciary but corrupt judges the CJN showed the president of some persons close to him who had funneled monies to judges to influence them in recent election cases.

The President then reluctantly asked the DSS to release all the arrested judges on Sunday pending their arraignment in court.

The NJC is expected to meet today to discuss the recent clampdown on corrupt judges. The DSS has reportedly sent a detailed report of its investigations against the arrested judges and eight others under investigation to the NJC to aid their deliberations and decisions, however, a source knowledgeable about today’s meeting said the NJC was to fight back strongly against the DSS not to ratify its actions against corrupt judges

PoliticsEdo Election: Tribunal Grants PDP Order To Inspect Electoral Materials by eke419(op): 6:22pm On Oct 11, 2016

The Edo State election petitions tribunal in Benin has granted a motion exparte to the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, to inspect all materials used in the conduct of the September 28 governorship election in the state.

The three-man panel of judges, led by Justice A. T . Badamasi, granted the PDP and its candidate the motion to inspect the electoral materials on Tuesday.Other members of the panel are Justice E. A. Adesodun and Justice Khadi Usman.

The Independent National Electoral Commission had declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Godwin Obaseki, winner of the poll.

Counsel for the PDP, Kingsley Obamogie, explained that the application to assess the materials was in line with Section 151 of the Electoral Act, 2010, as amended.

Obamogie also noted that the section empowered the party to institute a motion exparte to pray the tribunal to inspect all the electoral materials used for the September 28 poll.

After studying the motion, the judges, therefore, ordered INEC to make available all the electoral materials used for the poll.

It was gathered that the tribunal had yet to receive any petition from any of the aggrieved political parties and their respective candidates.

It was, however, learnt that the affected parties and candidates had 21 days within which to file their petitions, from the date the election was held.

PoliticsNo Regrets Writing Petition Against Aregbesola – Osun Judge by eke419(op): 7:51pm On Oct 10, 2016
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Oloyede-1.jpg

A former judge of the Osun State High Court, who was recently retired by the National Judicial Council, Justice Olamide Oloyede, has said she has no regrets writing the petition against Governor Rauf Aregbesola and his deputy, Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori.

The retired judge said this while featuring on a radio programme, Frank Talk, aired by Rave FM and monitored by our correspondent in Osogbo on Monday.Oloyede, however, apologised to the governor and the deputy for using certain words which she ought not to have used in the petition but stressed that she was convinced beyond doubt that she did no wrong by writing the petition where she asked the members of the House of Assembly to impeach Aregbesola and Laoye-Tomori.

She explained that she had no animosity against the governor, adding that she did not violate any section of the constitution for talking about the issues affecting the people of the state.

Oloyede said, ” I have no regrets writing that petition, but I think in retrospect I have come to realise that perhaps, I did employ some words or language in respect of Mr. Governor and his deputy, which I ought not to have and so, today I am tendering an unreserved apology, public apology for the choice of certain words which I would not repeat.

“However, as far as the substance of that petition is concerned, I remain resolute and I am convinced that my actions were done in fidelity to my office and to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigerian , which I swore to uphold and out of love for my country.

“As we say in law, the fact speaks for itself and as I said earlier, the petition speaks for itself. I would rather not go over the content of the petition, which I believe is in the public’s possession. My reason for writing is clearly stated there. I am a person known for my own conviction and the only regret I have, I have said it, every other thing I said I meant it word for word.”

She stated that some believed that the judiciary should only be seen and not heard even if the country was collapsing, but Oloyode said she did not belong to this class of people.

PoliticsRecession: See What Saraki Has To Say Concerning Home Made Goods by eke419(op): 5:06pm On Oct 10, 2016
https://latestnigerianews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/saraki.jpg

Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has commended the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, NESG, on the theme of this year’s summit which focuses on promoting Made in Nigeria goods.
Saraki, who will be a guest at the summit tomorrow, noted that the choice of the theme puts the private sector group on the same page with the Senate which has since last year identified the need to promote local manufacturers and service providers as champions of the efforts to revive the national economy.

In a statement by his Special Adviser (Media and Publicity), Yusuph Olaniyonu, the Senate President stated that the law-making institution, in its 20-point recommendations, on how to get the nation out of the present recession, mentioned that “we must reduce our imports tremendously and increase our exports to earn more dollars and the best way to do that is for us to patronize locally made goods”.
“We have therefore amended the Public Procurement Act to ensure that all government agencies compulsorily patronize local manufacturers and service producers in all their procurement. They can only resort to foreign options when there is no local alternative. With this new law, a huge portion of the national budget will go into the pockets of our people and generate employment, improve our GDP and help us to be self-sufficient.

“Other amendments in the Procurement Act reduces the period of award of contract, make the procurement process more transparent and increased mobilization fee to up to 25 percent, all in a bid to help our people just as it is being done in other countries.

“I commend the NESG for their choice of theme and urge them to discuss how to improve on quality and packaging of locally produced goods, helping local producers get into foreign markets and sourcing start-up capitals for small and medium scale entrepreneurs at rock-bottom interest rates.”

PoliticsFalana Slams Nigeria Bar Association, Says It Is Embarrassing To Shield Corrupt by eke419(op): 4:55pm On Oct 10, 2016

Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), on Sunday, criticised the Nigerian Bar Association for shielding corrupt judges despite having information about their activities. He described the failure of NBA to deal with corrupt officials in the judiciary as an embarrassment to the “incorruptible members of the bar,” adding that it was responsible for the current state of the country’s judiciary. He said this while reacting to the raid on the homes of some judges and the arrest of four of them by the Department of State Services between Friday and Saturday.

The operatives of the DSS had raided the official quarters of judges at Abuja, Gombe, Kano and Port Harcourt and ended up arresting at least four judicial officers.

The arrested judicial officers comprised two Justices of the Supreme Court – Justices Sylvester Ngwuta and John Okoro – as well as Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court and another judge of the Gombe State High Court, Justice Mu’azu Pindiga.

In a statement issued at the end of the raid, the DSS alleged that the suspects had engaged in judicial misconduct and corrupt practices, adding that a huge amount of money was recovered from three of the judges.

In response to the raid, the NBA had declared a state of emergency and demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the judges.

Falana, however, criticised the NBA, saying, “In particular, the Nigerian Bar Association which has information on all corrupt judges and lawyers in the country has continued to shield them to the embarrassment of incorruptible members of the bar and the bench.

“The few lawyers who have plucked up the courage to expose corrupt judges and lawyers have been stigmatised and treated like lepers by their colleagues.

“It is on record that when both the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Offences Commission and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission sent invitation letters to judges suspected of corruption they had rushed to the Federal High Court to obtain interlocutory injunctions to prevent their arrest, investigation, and prosecution.”

He said members of the legal profession had themselves to blame for the harassment of judges by security forces as they had failed to take advantage of the relevant statutory disciplinary bodies to purge the bar and the bench of corrupt elements.

“It is on account of negligence on the part of the legal profession that the SSS which screens candidates before they are recommended by the National Judicial Council for appointment as judges has now engaged in the arrest of judges for alleged corruption and abuse of office,” he said.

Falana, however, said because the detained judges “are presumed innocent until the contrary is proved by the State, they should be admitted to bail in self-recognizance.”

He urged the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, to ensure that the judges were immediately arraigned without delay.

He lamented the state of the legal profession, saying, “It is a matter of grave concern that the legal profession has allowed the denigration of the hallowed temple of justice because of the misconduct of a few corrupt judges.

“For several years, judges who committed grave criminal offences were not prosecuted but merely retired by the authorities on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council.

“Although the National Judicial Council recently recommended the dismissal and prosecution of a judge for extorting the sum of N197m from a litigant the authorities had paid lip service to the menace of judicial corruption in the country.”

PoliticsWhy PDP Lost Edo Governorship Election – Reps Member by eke419(op): 11:46am On Oct 08, 2016
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Ehio-zuwa-Johnson-Agbonayinma.jpg

A member of the House of Representatives, Mr Johnson Agbonayinma has explained why the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost September 28 governorship poll in Edo State‎.
He said the PDP lost because of the internal crisis rocking the party both at local and national level.

Agbonayinma, who represents Egor/Ikpoba Okha Constituency under the umbrella of the PDP, stated this while fielding questions from newsmen in Abuja on Friday.According to him, the party failed to resolve its problems before the election, noting that a house divided could never stand. He said that politics was not a do-or-die affair, but regretted that many politicians so it as such hence frequent bickering in political parties.

The lawmaker called for an end to the “blame game’’ in the party.

He also hailed the reconciliatory move between Chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Committee, Sen. Ahmed Markafi and disputed Chairman of the party, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff. He said he had wished that the reconciliation was worked through before the election in Edo, “so that the party could win’’

Agbonayinma denied an allegation that he was bodily in PDP but had his soul with the APC, and said he was in politics for the good of people of his constituency.

“When there is a motion on the floor of the House, I support or oppose for the good of Nigerians; it doesn’t matter to me if it is sponsored by APC or PDP,’’ he added.

PoliticsEFCC Vs. Mrs Jonathan Splits Niger Delta Militants by eke419(op): 8:31pm On Oct 03, 2016

Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND).
Recently NDA and MEND had agreed to allow respected Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark, to lead the Pan-Niger Delta group negotiating team with the Federal Government on the resurgence of militancy in the region.
However, investigations revealed that the Mrs Jonathan issue had caused a sharp divide, revealing the vested interests of the two groups caught between support for the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressive Congress.
While the NDA members are said to be supporting Mrs Jonathan, MEND are actively supporting the EFCC case against the former First Lady.
An indication of MEND support for EFCC was its recent statement in which it withdraw one of its nominees, Mr Timipa Jenkins Okonipere, from the Chief Clark group because of his (Okonipere) support for Mrs Jonathan.
Okonipere’s law firm, First Law Solicitors, had written an open letter to the EFCC Chairman, Mr Ibrahim Magu, giving it 14 days to unfreeze her accounts frozen by the Commission.
Sources said Okonipere’s action infuriated the sponsors of MEND and that, without hearing from him, they decided to move against him by removing him from the Clark Committee.
“MEND is not happy that Timipa Jenkins Okonipere is working for Mrs Jonathan. His support for Mrs Jonathan, whom the MEND sponsors want the EFCC to nail, is what made them to remove Okonipere from the Clark committee,” the letter said.
Meanwhile, further investigations have revealed that Okonipere is ready to work with Niger Delta groups to ensure that Mrs Jonathan is not humiliated and embarrassed by the EFCC.
To this end, he is putting final touches to a petition to be submitted to the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights, Banjul, Gambia, to address the breach of Mrs Jonathan’s fundamental human rights to a fair hearing and ownership of property guaranteed by the 1999 constitution and African Charter of Human and Peoples Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act of 2004.
Sources said since the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued to the EFCC on Sunday October 2, the next stage for First Law Solicitors would be to file a case against the EFCC to the African Commission in Gambia.

PoliticsHouse Of Reps Members Earn N10m Monthly – Abdulmumin Jibrin by eke419(op): 7:43pm On Oct 03, 2016

Honourable Abdulmumin Jibrin has made more allegations in the ongoing debacle in the lower house. The former Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee has made several allegations of budget padding against Senior members of the House of Reps.

He claimed the controversial 2016 budget was padded by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara and three other senior members. He was suspended for 180 days after failing to honour an invitation to a hearing by the Ethics and Privileges Committee.

Hon. Jibrin has however refused to be intimidated as he has now made fresh claims of the secretive salaries and allowances of the members of the House. In a chat today, he disclosed that members earn as much as N10 million monthly.

Despite promises by the Senate President to open up the 8th National Assembly, the allowances of Nigerian Senators remains shrouded in secrecy.

PoliticsThere Was Internal Sabotage During Edo Polls –idahosa by eke419(op): 6:58pm On Oct 03, 2016

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC)‎ and Political Adviser to Governor Adams Oshiomhole, Charles Idahosa, alleged at the weekend that there was “internal sabotage” during the Edo State September 28 governorship election.
Idahosa has also called for the restructuring of the party in Edo State.
Appraising the just concluded election, Idahosa insisted there was internal sabotage against the party by some members who allegedly worked for opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He alleged that some party members betrayed the APC at the polls.
“We are going to restructure the APC because there was a lot of internal sabotage during the governorship election,” he said. Speaking specifically on what transpired on election day in Uhunmwode local government area, Idahosa, who is the party leader in area said some party members pretended to workg for the APC yet workedagainst the party’s victory.
“I was very, very sceptical and that was what saved the day. We are going to really look at the party because we suffered a lot of sabotage in this election, but, thank God we won.”
Reacting to PDP’s rejection of the results of the election announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Idahosa expressed disappointment and observed that the party’s rejection of the results was made when INEC was
But, another APC‎ chieftain, Senator Domingo Obende faulted Idahosa’s call for restructuring of APC in Edo.
“What is important is that the party got victory at the last election. Whether there was internal sabotage, I don’t think that calls for the restructuring of a party”, he said.

PoliticsProbe Babangida, Obasanjo, Others, Sani Tells Buhari by eke419(op): 5:56pm On Oct 03, 2016
https://latestnigerianews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Leke-Baiyewu.jpg

A member of the Senate representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, Shehu Sani, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to extend his anti-corruption war to the governments before the Goodluck Jonathan-led administration.

The probe, he said, should be extended to both former presidents and ex-military rulers of the country.
According to him, in an interview with journalists on Friday, Nigeria had earned over $3tn from crude oil sales over the last 56 years “but there is hardly 25 per cent of that funds to show for the realisation of that kind of large sum of money.”

The senator, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, stated that catching both “the new and the old thieves” in the current war against corruption would not only help in recovering loot to boost the economy but would rekindle the failing hope of the masses in their country.

He stated that one of the ways of fighting recession was for the Buhari-led administration to enlarge the scope of its anti-corruption war beyond the Jonathan administration to others before it, with the sole purpose of recovering the nation’s stolen wealth by corrupt-minded past administrators.

Sani said, “The fight against corruption, as it is now, is about recovery and arrest.

“If the government says the money recovered under (the administration of Goodluck) Jonathan is not enough to service the economy, then, we should move to (the late Umaru) Yar’Adua and (Olusegun) Obasanjo administrations too; move to (Abubakar) Abdulsalami, (the late Sani) Abacha, (Ibrahim) Babangida and Buhari himself as a military ruler then; and to Shehu Shagari of the Second Republic.

“We must go after the old thieves irrespective of the political parties they belong to now, as the government is going after the most recent ones. For example, there was a Senate committee that probed the Independent Power Project where it was said that over $16bn was looted and we have not seen anything done to the revelations made by the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, who is now the Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, over the $20bn allegedly missing from the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation accounts under Jonathan, etc.”

PoliticsPresidential Panel Member Re-arraigned For Alleged $1m Money Laundering by eke419(op): 5:10pm On Oct 03, 2016
https://latestnigerianews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Mohammed-Umar-1.jpg

A member of committee set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate procurement of arms and equipment in the Armed Forces, Air Commodore Umar Mohammed, has been re-arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Umar, 54, was arraigned on Friday with his company, Easy Jet Integrated Services Limited, before Justice John Tsoho, on a four-count amended charge. They were charged with money laundering, illegal possession of firearms and violation of the Official Secret Act.
They were earlier arraigned in July before another judge of the same court, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, who granted Umar bail at N100m, with two sureties at N50m each. The sureties could be a private citizen or public officer, with landed property in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Umar’s rearraignment on Friday was informed by the transfer of the case to another judge and the amendment of the earlier charge by the prosecution.

Umar and his company are accused of conspiracy and accepting $1,030,000 in cash from a frim, Worldwide Consortium PTY Ltd, “as payment for flight services without going through a financial institution as required by law.

They have, by so doing, committed money laundering, contrary to sections 18 (a) and 16(1)(d) of the Money Laundering Act 2011 and punishable under Section 16(2)(b) of the Act.

Umar was accused of being in illegal possession of two pump action guns (marked: SBSG Magnum 397 and SBGS Interpress 09-1573) between June 1, 2011 and June 19, 2016 without valid licenses and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 4 of the Firearms Act 2004 and punishable under Section 27(1)(b)(i) of the act.

He was also accused of having at his No: 4 Lungi Close, Mississippi, Maitama, Abuja home “classified/official documents without lawful authority and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(1)(b) of the Official Secret Act and punishable under Section 7(1)(a) of the same Act.”

Umar pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him. His lawyer, Hassan Liman (SAN), who led Ibrahim Bawa (SAN), urged the court to grant Umar bail on the terms and conditions attached to the bail earlier granted him by Justice Dimgba.

Liman told the court that his client had been held incommunicado by men of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 19 when he was arrested. He accused the DSS of refusing to obey Justice Dimgba, directing that Umar be remanded in prison pending when he was able to meet the bail conditions.

Although prosecution lawyer Magaji Labaran opposed Liman’s application, Justice Tsoho, in a ruling, upheld the defence lawyer’s argument and granted Umar bail on the terms and conditions earlier set by Justice Dimgba.

Justice Tsoho ordered that Umar, who was dressed in a white agbada and a cap, be remanded in Kuje prison in Abuja pending the perfection of his the bail. He adjourned until November 7 for trial.

Project Fame, one of the biggest TV shows in Nigeria and West Africa generally has produced a lot of stars making waves all around the world. It produced Iyanya, Praiz, Chidinma,Olawale, Ayo, and many more.

However, the Season 9 of the show was just concluded some days back with another super star in the making, Okiemute Ighorodje as the winner. It was a great moment for her and her family as she was given a grand prize of N5Million, a Brand new SUV car and a recording deal worth millions of Naira
In an interview with SaharaWeekly’s Osho Oluwatosin, she revealed some topical issues about her career, how she will spend her money, the next step for her career and many more.

Excerpts below:

Q – Can you take us through your Background?

R – My name isOkiemute Ighorodje. I’m from Delta state, I’m 25-years old. I grew up in Delta state. I’m the third among four girls in my family. My dad is an Urhobo Man while my mum is a Delta-Igbo woman

Q – How do you intend to spend your money?

R – Money matter, dem no dey judge am o (laughs). We’ve had really great financial advisers come to the house and i picked one thing from each of them. All of them said one thing which is a very key thing. They said we should leave the money for a while and start thinking of what to do while keeping it away, and generate more funds.

Q – What’s the next step after Project fame?

R – Ahh, hard work. It doesn’t stop here.Infact, it has just started so it’s hard work, trying my best.

Q- Who were you close to among your colleagues?

R – I was close to Pere, because I’ve heard about him before then. We auditioned together from port-harcourt and before then, I’ve been hearing of Pere Davies. We’re musically inclined and as a singer, you get to hear about a particular musician who is equally good and the funny thing is there was a group where we share gospel truth, fact, ideas about God, Pere was there in that group too but the funny thing Is I didn’t even know. I just knew there was a Pere Davies but I wasn’t really looking forward to seeing him because it was just like a ghost communication and we both met at the audition. I didn’t even know he was the one until we got to top 24 and my friend told me he’s there too. I was surprised so we got closer since then.

Q – When was the most challenging moment?

R – Every moment was challenging because there was never a time we were given songs that we think we know it. Everything was challenging.

Q – Were your parents encouraging when you told them about your intention to go to Project fame?

R – I didn’t really tell them. I told them on the morning I was coming for auditioning and they both supported me. They know I love music and in my family, they support you in anything you want to do. Nobody pushes you.

Q –Lagos is a hub of entertainment, now that you won, do you see yourself relocating to Lagos?

R – Let’s look into the future for that.

Q – Was there anytime you felt discouraged during the competition?

R – There was not a time, every moment was encouraging.

Q – Who do you look up to in the entertainment industry?

R – I look up to my seniors. To me, music is everything I enjoy. I don’t really have a particular person. I just choose from all genres.

Q – Now as the winner of Project Fame season 9, what do you think fame will change about you?

R – I’m still going to be me, I won’t change. The only thing that will add to it is hard work

Fashola looks embarrassed as he waits for power to be restored. When it is finally restored, the super minister has a very sheepish smile on his face. See photos below and read the funny comments from Nigerians who are not surprised at all.

Nairaland GeneralGunmen Storm NTA Office, Burn Down Building by eke419(op): 2:27pm On Sep 15, 2016
https://nigeriabreakingnews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Gunmen-1-640x437.jpg

Suspected gunmen on Wednesday attacked the Nigeria Television Authority, NTA, office in Onitsha, Anambra State, torching some equipment and Star Times section in the premises.

The Acting Manager of the station, Chris Nwigwe, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Onitsha that the incident occurred at about 1.40 a.m.
“Some armed men tried to attack the staff on duty but only succeeded in burning down the Star Times building,” he said.

He added that no life was lost in the attack.

A witness said an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was planted at the security post of the station, while tyres were set around the premises to set the station ablaze.

“There was a gun duel between the armed men and policemen who were manning the office.

“They managed to burn down the Star Times office while the fire was later put out with the help of people around.

“This type of incident has never happened,” the source said.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Sam Okaula, who visited the scene with the Anti-Bomb Squad to evacuate the explosive device, confirmed that three suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident.

He said that investigation had begun to unravel the reason for the attack.

Mr. Okaula lauded police officers manning the office for their bravery. He said their quick intervention prevented loss of lives and destruction of more property in the attack.

He warned people against taking laws into their hands, and assured that the police would get to the root of the incident.

“Those who take laws into their hands should be ready to face the repercussion,” he stressed, adding that the suspects would be prosecuted in court after investigation was concluded.

NAN reports that three police patrol vans had been stationed in front of the station to beef up security.

Romance5 Reasons Why The Hottest Girls In Lagos Are Still Single by eke419(op): 12:58pm On Sep 15, 2016
https://latestnigerianews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/fine-lady-1.jpg

Not to brag, but there are quite a number of amazing and hot girls in Lagos city, Nigeria! These girls seem to not only appeal to the eyes, they seem to have it all: they are gorgeous but also smart and thrive in their careers; they have huge senses of self-worth, are witty, sarcastic, and real.

Out of all of these fabulously manicured and truly enjoyable girls in Lagos, though, there are a disturbing amount that is completely single, and this dilemma left us at asking the question “why?”. Men are visual creatures and there is nothing more pleasing to the eye than a beautiful girl, so what gives!
Read on to discover our speculations on possible reasons why these hot, smart, down to earth, and funny girls are single.

Men presume they’re already taken

This is a number one reason most of the hottest girls in Lagos are still single. A lot of men assume that because the girl is pretty, has an education, makes her own money, and seems happy, she must already be taken so they give up even before they start. They do not bother to get close to the girl or even ask her out as they feel they would be fighting an already lost battle.

Society does not set the rules

In Nigeria, most girls are generally groomed from a young age to believe that finding a man and having a family is the most important accomplishment in life. As a result, there is the expectation from the society that a girl above 25 should either be married or in a serious relationship that would lead to marriage. The thing with Lagos girls, though, is that they do not conform to this dictate of the society. The Lagos girl most times is occupied with so many other things making “finding a man to spend the rest of her life with” an item not so high on her list of to do’s. Basically, she makes her own rules and lives the way she wants to rather than being told what is and isn’t appropriate.

Most men are intimidated by their confidence

Lagos girls are one of the most confident girls in the world, especially the hot ones. While the confidence can be attractive, it tends to make the men want to run for cover. Usually, even the cockiest of men will second guess themselves before even daring to approach a Lagos girl. They get intimated and scared as they do not want to risk getting rejected.

The men are not as into commitment as they were

Thanks to modernization and influence from western cultures, a majority of Nigerian men, especially the one in Lagos have adopted the “hook up culture”, and this now seems to take precedence over serious relationships. It is therefore now difficult for Lagos girls to find commitment in a sea of men who just are not into it. Hence they remain single.

Most of the girls are focused on their career and have the time to meet men

In Lagos, the hustle is real for not just men but women as well. Most of the hottest girls work a lot of hours a day, including weekends as they focused on their career and want to climb as many ladders as they can. They are consumed with work, and coupled with the Lagos traffic there is little or no time for actual recreation , making the chances of them meeting men much slimmer. The few who end up creating profiles on online dating sites eventually give up as they may never get the time to meet up with their interests or when they do, they find they have been deceived.

PoliticsSee How A Disabled Woman Attempted Suicide In Buhari’s Convoy’s Front by eke419(op): 9:50am On Sep 10, 2016

President Buhari was in Edo state earlier this week, 6th September, to join the grand finale of APC gubernatorial hopeful Godwin Obaseki’s campaign train, but what many people are not aware of is the drama that allegedly played out shortly before the president’s convoy appeared close to the House of Assembly complex by Airport road Juncture in Benin, Edo state capital.

An eyewitness, Chijioke Anyacho narrates how a disabled woman on a wheel chair attempted suicide when she ambushed the President’s convoy, lamenting her poor living conditions.
Read the disturbing account below

Today I witnessed a woman on wheelchair attempt the unimaginable………running into the president’s convoy.

There was heavy military presence in King Square early this morning as president Buhari was coming to join the Grand finale of Godwin Obaseki’s campaign for the September 10th gubernatorial elections in Edo State. Soon they started redirecting vehicles and in a matter of minutes Ring Road was locked down…….no vehicular movement around the Square aside Police patrol vans.

I was beside the state house of assembly by Airport road Juncture, the only side without any military presence……just a hand full of unarmed policemen and civil defense.

Soon two Hilux Jeep with a ROAD CLOSED sign painted on top was coming with speed and the security personels immediately ordered everyone to move to the walk way and not cross the road.

In less than 60 seconds, the president’s convoy starts appearing from the curved corner of Airport road, they were not on the usual neck breaking speed that is the custom of Nigerian political class.

It was slow enough for you to get a good look of every single vehicle in the convoy yet fast enough for you not to be able to catch up with it in a race.

As the convoy gets close to the house of assembly complex, this woman on wheelchair appears from no where and starts wheeling herself right across the road.

The Jeep in front stops immediately……. I was expecting some armed security men to jump out and teach the woman a lesson for daring to ambush the president but they actually stopped for the woman on wheelchair to cross!!

I was dumbfounded.

It is suicidal to attempt crossing the road when a Nigerian politician is passing.

When the jeep stopped for the woman to cross, the woman stopped too…and it those splits seconds the driver of the Jeep seemed indecisive. Angry looking Mopol soon jumped downed from one of the Hilux van and charged toward the Jeep in from (sic) to know why it stopped suddenly, same time a policeman dashed for the woman on the wheelchair and pulled her back.

All these happened in less than 2 minutes.

It was when the woman grabbed the uniform of the policeman by the collar refusing to let go and shouting “una know as i take dey eat…I no dey fit buy food again…Buhari no go pass..make una leave me make i die”

It was then what just happened struck me.

She was held back till the president’s convoy passed.

I don’t know if i should call it desperation or bravery, honestly i don’t know which……….but I think some Nigerians are becoming more daring. The economy is pushing people to the walls.

I am sure the president will never get to hear that a woman on wheelchair attempted suicide on his convoy in Benin city.

It was right in front of me that it happened.

Nairaland GeneralTrain Crushes Man’s Leg And Hand While Listening To Music In Lagos by eke419(op): 8:58pm On Sep 09, 2016
https://nigeriabreakingnews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Lagos-Train.jpg

A man, simply identified as Prince, who was allegedly listening to music with ear piece while attempting to cross the rail lines escaped death by the whiskers as a moving train crushed his leg and hand, at Ajayi Farm bus-stop, opposite Adegbola street, in Ikeja area of Lagos State, yesterday morning.

It was gathered that the victim was crossing the railway but unknown to him a train was moving closer to him. Some sympathisers at the scene said the noise of the moving cars along the Oshodi Iyana- Ipaja expressway would not allow a passerby to hear the sound of a moving train.
An eye witness claiming to be the sister of the victim, told bossnewspapers that the man was already on the rail line with two other friends before noticing the oncoming the metropolis train. However, his inability to hear the blaring horns of the train because of the ear piece on both ears made him fall victim to the train which chopped off his ankle in the bargain.

The sister of the victim claimed that there was no reason the man should not have heard or seen the train even as passers-by were shouting to him. She philosophically added that it was obvious ‘the rail was in need of blood’.

A sympathiser, Clifford Anyanwu disclosed to Leadership that before the victim could notice that a train was close by, it was too late.

“Though the man tried to escape from the railway, the devil was already there to avert his escape. His trousers hooked a protruding iron in the rail which made the train to meet him and crushed one of his legs and one of his hands. The man wept profusely and even some women were crying for him. Many prayed that he survives the tragedy,” he said

It was gathered that the driver of the train which was moving towards Oshodi area did not hoot its horn from afar to alert people that such heavy vehicle was approaching.

Another eyewitness, who identified himself simply as Mama Adesua said,

“They were two who tried to cross the railway. One noticed that the train was coming and quickly crossed while the other (the victim) did not and has paid dearly for it. All efforts he made to escape proved abortive because he was under tension and the rail iron has held his trouser, causing the train to crush his leg and hand. I and other women were crying like babies when we saw the helpless man in the pool of his blood.”

It was gathered that policemen attached to Man Centre police station were at the scene and they assisted alongside some sympathisers to rush the victim and his severed ankle to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.
