The Federal Government has lost over 25 health workers, mostly poliomyelitis vaccinators, to the Boko Haram Islamic sect and other forms of insurgency since the beginning of this year, Executive Director of National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Ado Muhammad, has stated. Muhammad, in an interview with THE PUNCH in Abuja, during the inauguration of the PSC with the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development in Canada, however expressed optimism that the death of health workers will not stop government from providing healthcare services in the North East. He said, “In the North East, as I have always said, simply because of insecurity, insurgency and access problem doesn’t mean healthcare serviceswill not be provided. This is a responsible government and as a very responsible government, irrespective of wherever Nigerians may be, we will strive to ensure that we reach them.“In recent times, this year (2014) alone, we must have lost more than 25 health workers. We are committed to saving lives and will continue to make sacrifice. I want to say that we have lost quite a number of health workers in these locations (North East); for us we must see that as a sacrifice and continue to save lives in Nigeria.” He said the choice of the five states was premisedon the the high burden of diarrhea among children under five.“The burden is high in these states for a number of reasons; we have some challenges in terms of awareness, we have challenges in terms of appropriate treatment, we also have challenges in terms of health system. There is no single factor that is countable but a combination of factors. This program is set to tackle these problems and we believe that with these states accounting for 30 percent of diarrhea disease in this country, simple intervention will reduce it by 90 per cent and save more lives,” Muhammad stated. The NPHCDA ED said the project would run for the next three years and would work with states to institutionalize the use of zinc and ORS in everyprimary institution in the country. Source: .com.ng |
Despite promise to return the $15 million arms deal money seized by South African Authorities, it was revealed yesterday that the South African government is yet to fulfill the promise as it is still in possession of the said amount. According to reports, the money remains frozen in South Africa and has not been returned to the Nigerian government contrary to earlier claims. In October, several media articles quoting the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Lulu Mnguni, reported that the money seized in connection with two dubious arms deal had been released to the Nigerian government. However, Mr. Mnguni has told PREMIUM TIMES that the reports are false. Apart from the High Commissioner, the spokesperson of the South African National Prosecuting Authority, NPA, Nathi Mncube, and a South African source that is knowledgeable about the matter but requested not to be named, told PREMIUM TIMES in separate correspondences that the money was yet to be released to the Nigeria government. Rather than return the money, there is possibility that the money may never be returned to the Nigerian government again. Responding to enquiries about the extent of the investigation into the seized arms money, Mr. Mncube, who declined to give specific information because the NPA does not respond to matters under investigation, however, said the money may be forfeited to the South African government. “In terms of our law, proceeds of crime are forfeited to the state,” he said. On his part, Mr. Mnguni vehemently denied the reports credited to himthat the matter has been resolved diplomatically and the money returned to the Nigerian government. He said it was not procedural for the South African government to return frozen money in the manner suggested in the reports quoting him. Source: .com.ng |

In reaction to Nigerian Military's inability to dislodge Boko Haram insurgents from the North Eastern part of the country, former Head of State, General Muhamadu Buhari (rtd) has come out to defend the army authorities, preferring to push the blame to the doorstep of the government in power. The military, he said, are ill equipped despite the abundance of wealth being wasted on trivial issues by the government in power. The former military leader spoke at the weekend in Enugu while addressing the states delegates of All Progressives Congress (APC) to the forthcoming presidential primaries of the party. Buhari , a leading presidential aspirant in APC, told the delegates that “soldiers have been complaining that they are ill equipped, in spite of the trillions spent on defence budget in the last three years.” Buhari who was accompanied by former Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Malam Nasir El Rufai, former Minister of Information, Chief Tony Momoh, Chief Audu Ogbe, among other key officials of the party, noted that next year would be another landmark year in the history of the country. “If you consider the foreign revenue Nigeria has generated since 1999, you will be shocked at how inefficient and corrupt PDP has been. Soldiers have been saying they are ill equipped, yet trillions have been voted for defence in the last three years,” he said. He added: “If we don’t vote out PDP, it will vote out Nigerians and we will all be the losers. Cast your votes for us so that we can all fight this inefficiency and corruption.” Buhari enjoined the party members to get their Permanent Voters Cards (PVC’s), which is the only ammunition to vote out PDP and make sure their votes count in the 2015 general elections. He told them to be vigilant to vote and protect their votes to make sure they count. In a vote of thanks on behalf of the delegates, General Chris Eze (rtd) said if Nigerians elect Buhari as President, they will be sure of having a competent Commander-in-Chief once again. Eze recalled that under Buhari as Head of State, the violent Maitasine Sect was driven away from Nigeria into Chad while his regime initiated a serious war against indiscipline and corruption. .com.ng There was widespread tension on Friday in Yola, Adamawa state capital following an unsuccessful jail break initiated by some soldiers incarcerated at the Yola Prisons. The incident took place around 3pm shortly after Friday prayers were observed. Sources from the prison yard told LEADERSHIP Weekend that trouble started when the soldiers who were court martialed by military authorities and brought to the prison yard tried to break the door of their cell. However, prison warders used their numerical strength and overpowered the soldiers beating them mercilessly in order to deter them from further rebellion. It was gathered that some of the inmates of the prison yard who frowned at the arrogant behaviour of the incarcerated soldiers joined in beating up the soldiers who were later chained and taken to the back cells. As the commotion in the prison lasted, the armed squad of the Nigerian Prison started firing shots signalling that they were equal to the task of repelling any outside attack. The shots further caused pandemonium at Yola’s Friday Market which is located a stone throw away from the prison as marketers and residents quickly closed shop for the fear of the unknown. Some residents reportedly sustained injuries while fleeing from the scene of the incident as people scampered for safety. When contacted, the public relations officer of the Adamawa State Police Command, DSP Othman Abubakar confirmed the development, saying that earlier in the day, a minor scuffle ensued at Yola Prisons which was brought under control. |

The Federal Executive Council on Wednesday approved the purchase of N9.2billion worth of clean cook stoves and wonder bags for rural women under the National Clean Cooking Scheme. Wonder bag is a non-electric slow cooker invented by Sarah Collins, a south African eco-entreprenuer, who came up with the idea six years ago during a power cut, when she decided to keep her dinner cooking by surrounding the pan with cushions. The council also awarded a contract of N60.9billion to an indigenous firm, KaKatar CE Limited, for the provision of engineering infrastructure for Kyami District, Zone C, Abuja. Supervising Minister of Information, Dr. Nurudeen Muhammed; Minister of Environment, Mrs. Lawrecia Mallam; and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Muhammed, briefed State House correspondents at the end of the meeting presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo. Muhammed said the N9.2billion inclusive of Value Added Tax was approved for the procurement of 750,000 units of clean cook stove and 18,000 wonder bags. He said the stoves are expected to be delivered by Messrs Integra Renewable Energy Services Limited within a period of 12 weeks. He noted that the stoves which will be assembled locally, will provide jobs to Nigerians among other benefits. The minister said, “The National Clean Cooking Scheme is an aggressive drive to engender clean cooking culture amongst the poor rural women, to reduce and possibly eliminate cooking with solid fossil which is detrimental to health. “The scheme is expected to provide 20 million clean stoves over a five-year period at the rate of four million stoves yearly which will be distributed without charge. “It will also reduce incessant felling of trees which exposes the country to ecological problems. Source: .com.ng A budget proposal of N489.69bn on Monday was presented to the Lagos State House of Assembly for approval for 2015 fiscal year by the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola The budget is the same as that of 2014, which stood at N489.69bn. The budget is made up of capital expenditure of N249.232bn and a recurrent expenditure of N239.948bn in the ratio of 51.49 respectively. A breakdown of the budget shows that Economic Affairs has the highest allocation of N146.305bn, followed by General Service, which has N107.69bn. Housing and Community Amenities has N82.14bn; Education, N49.033bn; Health, N44.619bn, and Environmental Protection, N34.953bn. The governor said, “As you will observe, we have retained essentially the same budget size as 2014. This is for many reasons. One reason is that we have kept a zero deficit to ensure that the next government does not inherit a deficit. This will give them room to start off very quickly when their programmes begin to crystallise and they may need to raise funds. “Another reason is that our budgets, like all good budgets, are not only defined by plans and expectations, they make more sense if they are defined by resources. Our resources have been severely and adversely affected by the management and lack of transparency of the Federal Government and its agencies of the nation’s oil proceeds.” The governor said the Federal Government was still owing the state N51bn certified and unpaid out of the N59bn expended on federal roads in Lagos. “They also owe pension obligations of N673.67bn which they have not paid. And as all of us are aware, oil prices have dropped from $100 per barrel to just around $80 per barrel at the time we finalised the budget. “Our monthly receipts from FAAC have fallen below our usually conservative expectations for the first time in seven years. And lately, we noticed that reduced patronage of the tourism and entertainment facilities has occurred in the aftermath of the Ebola outbreak. This has translated to reduced consumption and consequently reduced incomes in the consumption tax sub-head of our Internally Generated Revenue,” he said. Fashola said in spite of the challenges, the 2015 budget would focus on payment of contractors’ liabilities to enable government complete as many projects as possible before handing over. He added that one of the highlights of the 2015 budget would be the settlement of outstanding pension liabilities that were imposed by the Federal Government which later became contentious. He explained that without consultation with the state, the Federal Government had reviewed pensioners’ entitlements upwards by 142 per cent without a corresponding upward review of the state’s revenue. |
In reaction to a statement credited to Former President Olusegun Obasanjo in which he described the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan as below average, the Presidency has hit back at him, describing his comments as misleading and false. It also said Jonathan has performed better than Obasanjo or any other president since Nigeria got independence in 1960. The reaction was contained in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe. It said Obasanjo’s comments do not tally with facts on the ground. “Our attention has been drawn to comments made by a former President of this country, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo regarding the performance of the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan. “Chief Obasanjo had at an event over the weekend declared that he rated the President Goodluck Jonathan administration “below average. “We aver that Chief Obasanjo’s comments are untrue, misleading and clearly do not tally with the facts on the ground. “We therefore wish to assert without equivocation that in terms of performance and achievements, no administration since 1960 when Nigeria gained independence from Britain, has done as much as that of President Jonathan. Every discerning and unbiased Nigerian will definitely attest to this fact as the evidence stare all of us in the face. “We will show here that contrary to Chief Obasanjo’s position, the Federal Government under President Jonathan has performed excellently given the prevailing circumstances and resources available. An assessment of key sectors of national life under the Jonathan administration will definitely controvert Chief Obasanjo’s argument that President Jonathan has not performed well. We will prove this by looking at the performance of the following sectors under President Jonathan. “While it is true that Nigeria has been faced with incidents of insurgency and terrorism especially in the last few years, it is also true the Jonathan administration has successfully contained the initial wide-spread and limitless activities of the insurgents which were prevalent in twelve states of the North including the Federal Capital, Abuja. While it is true that the present activities of the terrorists in the three North Eastern states have become more deadly in mindless killings, kidnappings and supposed territorial seizures. Government has made giant diplomatic strides with our neighboring countries in order to checkmate the crisscrossing of the insurgents,” Okupe said. Source: http://www..com.ng/ |
As much as we want to believe all is well between Tiwa Savage and her husband, Tunji Balogun, they keep fueling rumours even the more. Flashback to when the duo just wedded, we remember vividly that Tiwa especially, was always all over social media, gushing about her boo to the admiration of all and sundry. Then rumour started flying that there's trouble in paradise yet, the couple didn't come out to debunk it until much later. And now, after all rumours were rested, Sunday, Nov.23 makes it one year into their marriage and Tiwa, who has been MIA for some time on social media, suddenly surfaced to remind us of their anniversary however, with few words. She simply wrote "23/11/2015#Anniversary", accompanying it with just a love sign after sharing one of their traditional wedding photos. Is that all? No gushing about Tunji anymore? Wow, we were shocked anyway. But not to worry, just like Tiwa, Tunji also wrote something brief on his Instagram wall. After also sharing one of their traditional wedding photos he simply wrote, "Immortal", also accompanying it with a love sign. That's all too! No more gushing about Tiwa and how their love is growing stronger and all? Source: http://www..com.ng/ |

Alkali gave his nod in Abuja while receiving members of the Mass Movement for Goodluck 2015 and Nigeria Economic and Political Action Committee (NEPAC) in his office. He noted that his office was willing and ready to accommodate all positive ideas to guarantee political stability in the country. National Coordinator of MMG and Director General of FFDGN, Kenneth Ibe-Kalu, who spoke at the joint courtesy visit, maintained that the objective of the assessment was to foster socio-political development of the country through a process that forestalls rancour, politics of hate and bitterness with propensity to cause split within the party system. He stated that the project was embarked upon so as to build loyalty and cohesion, generally developing the right spirit of unity and patriotism to make the PDP more formidable. According to him, the programme was designed to assure post-election stability of the polity for effective governance. “The programme was to identify, evaluate and shortlist aspirants on classified basis who, if supported to victory, will maintain maximum loyalty and be part of a strong support base for President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015”, he said. There's a reason why they say opposites attract! For those of us who have been in the dating game for awhile, we know that it can be really hard to go out of our comfort zone. Even though we go on dates with the thought of being openminded to finding love or even friendship, being able to actually put that into practice can seem next to impossible. It's not that we're intentionally being picky; it just isn't that easy to break out of our habit when we have a certain "type" that we're going far. But that's the problem right there. Although having a type is healthy and normal, we actually do a disservice to ourselves by refusing to explore our options. In fact, this video is pretty much proof that just because you don't sound perfect on paper doesn't mean that you won't turn out to be a great match. In the last few days, scores of innocent Nigerians have been bombed to death in parts of the North East. As you read this story, unprovoked attacks are still going on in the states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe. Multitudes of people are fleeing their ancestral homes, an ugly development that continues to create an army of internally displaced refugees (IDRs). These are all happening despite several assurances of respite from the military high command and the government at the centre. The question that is being asked is, why has the Federal Government not being able to contain the insurgency? In the recent times, the military has court-mashalled a good number of soldiers for various offences, ranging from mutiny to sabotage, and to abandonment of duty posts. But a pundit who would not want his name in print accused the military high command of leaving the major war to busy itself with minor issues....
