Sports / Keshi's New Contract To Contain Clauses For Enhanced Performance - NFF by eke419: 1:51pm On Jan 12, 2015
The President of the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, Amaju Pinnick, has said that Super Eagles Coach Stephen Keshi's will be offered a new contract that will contain clauses for enhanced performance.

Mr. Pinnick said this on the sidelines of the Glo/CAF Awards 2014 which held at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, on Thursday night.

The NFF president also said that peace had returned to its Glass House after various factions working at cross purposes sheathed their swords.

" I didn't say I was not going to offer him a new contract, we are going to work with.

"We are going to take a lot of things into consideration.

"It's like when you are building a house and you feel that the house needs to be enhanced so you put other structures for enhancement and that's what we are going to do.

"Keshi is going to be offered a new contract.

But in the contract we are going to have certain clauses working with the Technical Study Group, working with the Technical Committee, working with the Technical Department.

"And making sure in terms of player selection, there is science of players which means fitness and so many other things.

"So, all those are the things that are going to be embedded in the contract.

"When they are embedded in the contract we are also looking at areas that will improve our performance.

"That when there is any window we will be able to send him on internship, attachment to various clubs in Europe.

"All those are things we are doing to enhance his capacity.

"You will agree with me that Keshi has won everything; he just needs to be enhanced in terms of building his capacity and that is exactly what we intend to do."

Politics / 2015 Election: Emirs Rebuff Pro-jonathan Lobby by eke419: 2:10pm On Jan 11, 2015
Several influential emirs have rebuffed a lobby by a fellow emir on behalf of President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of next month’s election.

The emirs, it was gathered, have chosen to be neutral and back whoever is freely voted into office by the electorate.

In the same camp as the pro-Jonathan emir are other traditional rulers from the North central and North west, according to a source familiar with the development.

One source said: “The Emir has been telling his colleagues that Jonathan has been fair to the North and to avoid a dent in the North/South south relationship, the President should be allowed to have a second term in office.

“Some of these Emirs and royal fathers pointed to the volatility of Northern politics and opted to take the back seat to await the people’s choice. Remember how a special adviser was burnt to death in the Second Republic for querying the Emir of Kano.

“A few other Emirs have discovered that the lobbying Emir has some vested interests to protect and they have chosen to ignore him.

“So, these Emirs may not be able to reach any consensus on either Jonathan or Buhari.”

It was also gathered that division has crept into the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), the Nigerian-Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over who to back between President Goodluck Jonathan and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

NIREC has not been able to meet for almost a year owing to what a source described as “sheer politics.”

According to investigation some prominent NSCIA, NIREC and CAN members have taken a position on a presidential candidate but others yearning for change have disagreed.

Some however argued that these organizations should be neutral and rally round whoever wins the race.

It was gathered that some of these top leaders attributed their position to certain favours, perks and honour they stand to enjoy if their choice wins.

Findings revealed that the division in these top organizations has led to mutual suspicion among members and leaders.

A top source, who spoke in confidence, said: “There are issues about Jonathan and Buhari among members in these organizations. The body language and comments of some of these leaders have shown the direction they are going.

“The situation degenerated to the extent that in a meeting of one of these organizations, a leader was advising members on why a candidate must not be supported.

“Some of us are however saying that we should not take sides at all in the overall interest of the country.

“Of what use will it be when you are holding a position of trust to ensure unity and stability of the country and you are taking a partisan position.

“The inherent danger is that you will lose focus. Whatever favours or opportunities anyone might have enjoyed in the past and present, it remains a private matter.

“Before you know it, whoever is elected will be looking at how to cripple these associations.”

Investigation confirmed that NIREC appears worse hit by petty politics because the Inter-Religious body has been unable to meet in the past one year.

Another source said: “Contrary to what the public is being fed with, NIREC had fixed a meeting for Gombe but one of our leaders said he was uncomfortable with the state because of Boko Haram insurgency. This was after Gombe State Government had bankrolled our meeting and even guaranteed our safety.

“Later we shifted the NIREC meeting to Abuja and Gombe State Government was still ready to assist us. But some people did not just want the session to hold because of politics.

“Yet, this is a body which ought to assist the nation to address ethno-religious crises nationwide.”

The Emir of Zauzau, Alh Shehu Idris had in March last year pleaded with President Goodluck Jonathan to resuscitate NIREC

He made the plea when Jonathan met with traditional rulers from Kaduna State shortly before attending the zonal unity rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He said: “I want to make a passionate appeal to the government to resuscitate the Nigerian Inter-religious Council at the national level

“After this, there should be the establishment of branches of NIREC in all the 36 states of the Federation.”

Politics / Troops Uncovers List And Sketches Of Town To Be Attacked By Boko Haram by eke419: 8:44am On Dec 10, 2014
Troops operating in the North-East have captured documents containing list and sketches of communities and towns apparently slated for attack, from fleeing terrorists in Adamawa.

This is contained in a post on the website of the Defence Headquarters obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.
It said in two separate operations spanning Adamawa and Bauchi states, the troops also killed 27 suspected terrorists during fierce confrontations in a bid to rid the areas of insurgency.

“During a hot pursuit of the terrorists around Hildi, Adamawa, at least seven of the terrorists lost their lives.

“A total of five rifles, hundreds of rounds of ammunition as well as bows and arrows were captured from them.

“During an operation conducted on Balmo and Lame forests linking Borno, Bauchi and Adamawa states, the troops recovered rifles and a number of motorcycles, and after resistance, the terrorists were crushed.

“Over 20 of the terrorists lost their lives while some were wounded.

“At the end of the encounter, troops eventually took firm control of the forest,” the post said.

It added that the campaign against terrorists’ activities was continuing with air and land operations being conducted in various theatres in parts of the country.

Politics / EFCC Secures 110 Convictions In 11 Months by eke419: 8:34am On Dec 10, 2014
Mr Ibrahim Lamorde, the Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Tuesday, said the Commission secured 110 convictions between January and November 2014.

He made the disclosure in Abuja at an event to commemorate the 2014 International Anti-Corruption Day with the theme: “Breaking Corruption Chain”, organised by the Inter-agency Task Team.
Lamorde, who said that the Commission secured 117 convictions in 2013, added that the feat was in line with its commitment to break the chain of corruption in the country.

He expressed optimism that the Commission would secure more convictions before the end of the year, adding that corruption had slowed down development in the country.

The EFCC boss said “we have realised that fighting corruption is not all about arrest, prosecution and conviction; it requires a lot more approach.

“We have adopted public enlightenment and education so as to reach out to the grassroots.’’

Lamorde said the Commission had adopted the process of budget monitoring at all levels of government and embraced the use of social media for public enlightenment.

In his remark, Mr Ledum Mitee, the Chairman, Inter-Agency Task Team, said the International Anti-Corruption Day was set aside globally to raise awareness and reiterate the commitment parties to the fight against corruption.

He called for effective implementation of the laws against corruption without fear or favour and adequate empowerment of anti-corruption institutions to enhance the fight against the menace.

Politics / Borno, Adamawa Residents Laud Military, Pledge More Support by eke419: 8:25am On Dec 10, 2014
The people of Adamawa have commended the military for curtailing the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents in the northern part of the state.

The army had recently succeeded in recovering areas occupied by insurgents in Mubi-North, Mubi-South, Gombi and Hong local government areas.
A cross section of the people who spoke on the successes recorded against the sect members said the development was a big relief to the residents of the state.

“I was thinking of leaving Yola for Abuja or Lokoja when Boko Haram took over Mubi and other areas, but with this development, I am now relaxed and hope to do my Christmas here,” Peter John said.

Tizhe Kwada, Ibrahim Abdulrahman and Felix Vandi, who hailed from Michika town, commended the efforts of the military and called for steady military advance to cover Michika and Madagali local government areas.

“I want them to sustain the tempo and cover Michika and Madagali local government areas to make it a total liberation of the territories in Adamawa,” Vandi said.

Ahijo Idris and Aliyu Lokuwa, who hail from Mubi, said they were happy with the development and would love to go back whenever the military gave the order for people to return.

“There is still restriction of vehicular movement, whenever the military gives the green light for people to return a lot of us are set to rush back home.

” Our crops are due for harvest and many of us are eager to go back home and harvest,” the residents said.

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), Malam Haruna Furo, has visited Mubi and other areas affected by the mayhem.

Furo said the agency was assessing the situation with a view to taking necessary measures before the residents could return home.

Meanwhile, the Borno chapter of the Nigeria Vigilante Group, said it would continue to collaborate with the military in order to consolidate on the successes recorded against the insurgents.

An official of the group, Malam Muhammed Sani, said this in an interview with NAN in Maiduguri.

“We are fully prepared and we will continue to support the military in winning this war; and I can boastfully say that no Boko Haram can enter this city to defeat us.

“They are cowards, that is why they are sending unsuspecting female bombers to attack the cities, but we have devised means to track down any bomber that enters this town.

Sports / The Top Five Resourceful African Footballers by eke419: 3:58pm On Dec 06, 2014
Confederation of African Football (CAF) is on the match again to crown the best footballer in the African continent.

From the West to the East, North to the South, CAF is already combing the entire African nations to identify the most resourceful, skilful and purposeful footballer in the year 2014. In the process, 25 names have been released, which was later pruned to five to compete for the prized crown.

The release of the list has led to high expectations across the continent on who should be the next King of African Football. Football pundits are busy making permutations on who deserves to wear the crown. Is it Yaya Toure again? Could it be the turn of Vincent Enyeama, undisputable the best keeper in Africa? Or, could it go to Ghanaian Asamoah Gyan? Indeed, who wears the crown for 2014?The African Football King will be unveiled at the gala nite of 2014 Glo- Caf Awards at the prestigious Convention Centre, Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos on January 8, 2015. But as preparations for the 2014 Glo CAF awards gather momentum, it is pertinent to present the top 5 contenders for the African Player of the Year as released by CAF. Who are they? What are their pedigrees? What is the outstanding feature in each of them to earn them the crown? Out of these 5, who richly merits the crown?

Ahmed Musa
A very resourceful player, Ahmed Musa, from Nigeria was born on October 14, 1992. He currently plays for CSKA Moscow (Russia). He is known for his pace, dribbling runs and ability to cut inside the eighteen yard box and mesmerise any defence. Musa was a member of the Nigerian Super Eagles squad that won the 2013 Orange Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa in 2013. He also featured at the FIFA Confederations Cup later in Brazil. He is the first Nigerian to score more than once in a FIFA World Cup final. Indeed, his goals against Argentina in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil were exceptional. It was Musa versus Merci, who also scored his team’s two out of three goals. With CSKA Moscow, Musa won every title in Russia - League, League Cup and the Super Cup during the 2012/2013 season, scoring five times in the process. He remained an integral part of CSKA, especially in the current season where he has featured in almost all the club domestic matches and in the European Champions League.

Asamoah Gyan
Was born on 22 November 1985 in Accra and he plays for AL Ain in the UAE Professional League. Gyan is the all-time leading goal scorer of the Ghana national football team, Black Stars, and he has represented Ghana at the 2004 Summer Olympics and in 5 Africa Cup of Nations in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013, finishing third-place at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations and runner-up at the 2010 edition, then fourth-place twice in a row at the 2012 and the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations respectively. Gyan represented Ghana at the 2006 World Cup, scoring the fastest goal of the tournament after 68 seconds. He also scored three goals at the 2010 World Cup but missed a crucial penalty kick in the last minute of extra-time in a quarter-final defeat at the hands of Uruguay. On 2 June 2014, Gyan was named in Ghana's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. In the team's opening match, he captained the Black Stars against the United States in a 2–1 defeat. He scored his first goal of the tournament in a 2–2 draw with Germany, equalling legendary Roger Milla's record of five FIFA World Cup goals by any African player. In the final group match, he became the top African goal scorer in World Cup finals history by scoring the Black Stars' goal as they were defeated 2–1 by Portugal.

Pierre-Emerick Emiliani Francois Aubameyang
Is a professional footballer who plays for the German club Borussia Dortmund and the Gabon national football team. He was born on June 18, 1989. He is known for his pace, having clocked 30 meters in 3.7 seconds, and his capability of playing as a striker or a winger. He was on target three times for Gabon (a hat-trick against Niger) during the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers as Les Panthers failed to reach the Playoffs. He has however been in superb form at club level. He emerged second top scorer in Ligue 1 with 19 goals during 2012-13 seasons, and also guided Saint Etienne to the Coupe de La Ligue (French League Cup). In July 2013, he joined German side Borussia Dortmund and has scored ten times in all appearances. He also won the German Super Cup with Dortmund after a 4-2 win over Bayern Munich. He has been in a very good form for his club since the beginning of the current season.

Vincent Enyeama
Was born on August 29, 1982 and currently plays for Lille FC in France. The achievement of Nigeria in football in the last decade cannot be complete without mentioning the name of Enyeama. The shot-stopper is simply the finest on the continent after superb showings at the Africa Cup of Nations, FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil, 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the World Cup proper also in Brazil. He was named the safest pair of hands as Nigeria won the continental crown in South Africa earlier in 2013. He also made a name for himself with Lille in the French “Ligue 1” where they nick-named him “Jesus in goal” as he did not concede any goal from September 15 to December 7; maintaining an eye-popping 11 clean sheets from 16 games and 1035 minutes in total.

Yaya Toure
Reigning African Player of the Year, Yaya Toure, from Cote d’Ivoire was born on May 13, 1983. The Manchester City of England Player won the last three editions of the African Player of the Year Award and he is still at his peak. Yaya Touré has been a regular member of the Ivory Coast national team since his debut in 2004. In 2006, he appeared for Éléphants in all three of the team's matches at its first ever World Cup. In the 2010 tournament, he again appeared in all of Côte d'Ivoire's matches, scoring the opening goal in a 3–0 win over North Korea.

Touré has represented Côte d'Ivoire at five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments; in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013. In the 2006 and 2012 editions, the team ended as runners-up. Touré was named in the CAF's team of the tournament in 2008 and 2012. He made his third World Cup appearance during the 2014 competition, and captained the team in their opening match, a 2–1 defeat of Japan in which he was named man of the match by FIFA. He also helped the Elepahants to qualify for the 2015 African Cup of Nations. At Manchester City, he is a cult figure and has been the driving force for the club. For the current 2014-15 season, the midfielder has found the back of the net five times in 11 games. Touré began his playing career at Ivorian club, ASEC Mimosas, where he made his debut aged 18. His performances attracted attention from Europe. Touré played for Beveren in Belgium, MetalurhDonetsk in Ukraine, Olympiacos in Greece, and AS Monaco in France. In 2007, Touré moved to Barcelona, playing over 100 matches for the club and was part of the historic 2009 Barcelona team which won six trophies in one calendar year. Yaya Touré then moved to Premier League club Manchester City in 2010, where he has since scored a number of key goals for the Citizens – most notable of which were the lone goals in the 2011 FA Cup semi-final and final. Touré has a distinguished international career with 82 caps for Ivory Coast.
The Confederation of African Football will announce the top three nominees in the coming weeks, while the winners will emerge at the Glo CAF Awards gala night in Lagos on 8th of January, 2015.

Politics / PDP Suspends Bamanga Tukur, Gurin by eke419: 7:33pm On Dec 05, 2014
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Thursday announced the suspension of the former national chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and Abuba Gurin for anti party activities which bother on their taking the incumbent national chairman, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, to court without exhausting the party's internal mechanism for resolving crisis.

They are suspended for one month and their case referred to the party's disciplinary committee for further action.
In a statement by the National Legal Adviser of the party, Victor Kwom, it said that the decision to suspend Tukur was taken at its 395th meeting held Wednesday December 3, 2014, which reviewed recent national developments as they affect the party.

According to the statement, among others, the NWC deliberated on the court case instituted against the National Chairman of the Party, Ahmed Adamu Mu'azu by the former National Chairman, Dr. Bamanga Tukur.
