Hello Gurus... Please, I need your input on this:

I got admit + funding for an MS. "I have an intent of progressing to a PhD after my MS before returning to Nigeria"... Is it dope to tell the VO this (when asked plan after study) or will it show migration intent?

Thanks. I await your responses..

Good you've been advised to get an affidavit. You might need those at some point later too.
Most certainly... I will get it. Thank you Sir

If order is the only challenge, then you don't need to worry your head over that. You may only need an affidavit in the case of a typo error.
It's both: order and typo error... I will swear an affidavit.

Thank you Sir for your reply.

The name on my passport is the right order and the one on my UG cert and transcript is in the wrong order.

For visa interview purpose, NO but for school purpose, there is need as you may like to correct your name when you get to your school in US.
Thank you Sir for your reply. The name I used for the school I got admitted to in the US is the correct one and same with the name on my international passport, I20, birth cert, GRE and TOEFL results... So I guess no need for the affidavit... Since only my UG cert and transcript bears my name in the wrong order... And since you said the affidavit serve no purpose during the Visa interview

Fill same name on your ds 160 and visa appointment form. Use the rightly spelt name as your first name and last name and the other as your middle name.
Thank you Sir for your reply. Is there still a need to swear an affidavit that says that the name on my certificate and Transcript is also mine?

I don't think it will be an issue at all. But you can still correct the name on your passport at abuja to reflect your correct name.
Thanks for your prompt response. But my I-20 now bears the name and that is the name on my legal record with UGA.

Good evening all.
I trust we all having pleasant evening and gearing up for different stages of our application.

Please I would need to know if a school must wait till the end of their application date before reviewing applications and making decision.

I applied to a school for spring and deadline for Int'l application was 30th September and 15th November for US citizens.
I'm yet to year from them about decision. Could it be that they have to wait till after 15th November before they get back to me?

Thanks for anticipated response.
Some wait till after application date before making decisions while some don't. Best course of action would be to email your Graduate Coordinator and ask when a decision is likely to be made.
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 14 by elevatedmind:
Hello Gurus,

I just got an RA for the Spring term. I am finalizing the shipment of my I-20 and I would soon book a Visa appointment.

My certificate and Transcript bears my name in this format (not my real name... Just an example) Abigail Ada Uche while my international passport, birth certificate, GRE and TOEFL results bear my name in this format Ada Abigai Uche (please take note that the Abigai doesn't have a "l" at the end)

Please, will this be an issue when conversing with the VO, should I swear an affidavit and take it with me for the interview?

Thanks a lot. I await your replies.

I must begin by saying that I pride myself on being a very pragmatic person, I am the kind of "if I pass I pass and if I fail life goes on" person. But Gre got me extra Mawkish. I wrote my exam last week Thursday and it wasn't a good experience. The verbal was like the most abstruse passage I have ever read in my life, none of the vocab I read came out, thank God for American movies and novels in my life. The quant was bitter, oh so bitter, I had to stand up at a point l, went to the bathroom and cried, I asked God why he has forsaken me. But to the Glory of God he didn't forsake me. I ended up having 154V 156Q, 3.5 AWA.
I feel I deserve better in AWA tho.

I'm applying for PhD pharmaceutical science,
My research is limited to my undergraduate project, my cgpa is 4.50 and I sent my scores to the Following schools
University of Kentucky
University of Houston
Washington State University
University of Oklahoma.
I sincerely hope my minor research experience wouldnt be a deterrent to me getting an admit.

Now my greatest headache is the SOP. Any pointers from the Veterans would be much appreciated.
The book jumybecks intends to upload to a Dropbox or Google drive will be invaluable for writing a good SOP

Timotee:
First off, he's still in his 4th year of medical school and should focus on getting his MBBS first as he still has 3 major exams to write in medical school. It's really very easy to get distracted.

With regards to a path, there are several paths. The easiest path will be to write USMLE step 1 (and if possible, step 2ck) during his housejob period. The closest centre is in Ghana. If he's certain he won't be taking any governmental appointment in the future, then he can skip his NYSC.

After applying and getting admitted to an MPH programme (should apply during housejob or NYSC), he can work towards writing step 2cs and step 3 exams while doing his MPH. If he can get an observership while doing his MPH, it will help. Note that studying for the USMLE exams is very intensive and his MPH may suffer as a result. Also, he should put extra effort to getting very good scores on his USMLE exams. A failed exam will impact tremendously on his chances of getting a residency spot; so he should only write the exams when he's fully prepared.

All in all, like I said previously, he should focus on getting his MBBS first.

Hope this helps.
Thanks a lot Sir for your reply. I really appreciate. I will relay your message to him and invite him to this trend. Please, can he connect with you for guidance in the future?

Hello, Nlanders!
I graduated in Mechanical Engineering with a GPA of 4 of 5. I have the zeal for continuous education. Is my grade high enough to pursue a Master's degree in the U.S? Or I should first have my Master's in Nigeria and later apply for PhD in the U.S.
It's high enough for an M.S. and even a direct PhD. I will advice you read the trend from page 1 - the present page.

Cheers!!!

Hello all!!

I have a friend - a med student in year four. He wants to specialize in US after completing his MBBS here. Please, I would like to know the path doctors take. I am thinking writing the GRE and TOEFL then applying for a Master's in Public Health; then on getting there, they complete the MS in Public Health and go on to specialize. Please, anyone with knowledge should enlighten me and if possible, point me to someone that has done similar stuff on this trend.

Thanks a lot. I look forward to your replies.

Is it a STEM course, if yes, contacting them is in your best interest. You will be able to ascertain if it will be worthwhile spending your hard earned money on that school (you will be able to know if the Prof that is working in your area of research is taking a new student and if he has funding). Like checkout a scenario where you indicate in your SOP that you want to work with say "Prof A" because he does research in "project B" but then Prof A is retiring, on sabbatical or has no funding. Contacting him prior to submitting your app will enable you be smart and maybe change research interest or school.

Another advantage of contacting POI is you will be able to sell yourself ahead of other candidates. Like after reading 2/3 of his publications and showing him you know your stuff, the Prof might pick interest in you and maybe request for a Zoom/Skype conversation. Such will give you a boost during the admission decision because the Prof might fight for you if he thinks you are a good fit for his research group.

There are many other cases, these are the ones I can remember based on my very little knowledge..

Hello Guys. I guess everyone has settled in ? For those still trying to getting admission and funding, don't give up. Those of us who have benefited from here will do our best in helping others too.

By the way,I did change my school to Stanford. Remember the guy I was always mailing at Stanford? He was able to get funding for me as one of his prospective students left for Cambridge in the UK. So I'm super elated and glad. Though I wasted some money processing stuff to go to TAMU, I'm optimistic going to Stanford is worth it.
Stanford is huge. Congrats Boss

Check smallsuper posts for 170 in quant.

For verbal, official guide + official guide (verbal only), Manhattan 5lb for RC and PA practice + magoosh + word apps (magoosh app + Quizlet app - you can download Manhattan 500 advanced + 500 essential + Barron 333 high frequency) + reading articles from nytimes/aldaily.com + Princeton

For verbal, pls digest the official guide before moving to any other material. No one twists questions like ETS.

EducationRe: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by elevatedmind: 9:34am On May 02, 2018
I took my GRE two weeks ago. Didn't get a stellar score 307 (155Q 152V). I'm dropping my experience so that others can learn from my mistakes given the fact that I have gotten a lot of info from this trend.

My prep was good, there was a lot of improvements. I had 308 in my first powerprep and this was two months to the actual exam. Subsequently, I had 318 and 316 in ETS paper test and powerprep 2 a week to the actual exam.

What blew my prep was I didn't know when to quit. I was still going at my normal pace (reading 24/7 including night time) so a night to the exam I couldn't get 4hrs sleep. I went to the center struggling to get little sleep by any possible means (during the bus driver, while waiting for the exam to begin at the centre).

When the first math section came...... Damn......I was struggling with simple questions (2 mins passed)..... Next two math sections were medium difficulty (I knew I blew it). I later got out of the center and solved one of the question (if I post it here, you go laugh my flop die).

My advice to prospective takers is try and get enough rest to avoid throwing away weeks of prep and know when to let go during the test. Also, this trend has everything you need to Ace the test and take full length practice tests.

Also, many thanks to ponpon for the registration and to the many egbons in the house.
