On this day in 1960, Nigeria there was
jubilation in the streets and hope for the
future. That feeling was made possible by
these strong -willed men who were ready to
lay down their lives for the country they
loved and believed in.

Herbert Macaulay

Macaulay was known as the founder of
Nigerian nationalism and a strong
opponent of many colonial policies for
most of his life . Macaulay co -founded the
Nigerian Daily News, where he wrote
opinion pieces which made him a
prominent figure in political issues in
Lagos. In 1923 he founded the Nigerian
National Democratic Party (NNDP ) with the
aim to put candidates into the legislative
council, promote democracy as well as
increase Nigerian participation in the
development of Nigeria. He also became
the first national president of the National
Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons
(NCNC) , the party which he co -founded
with Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe in 1944 .

Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe

Nnamdi Azikiwe

Azikiwe was at the fore of Nigeria gaining
her independence . As the editor of The
Africa Morning Post in Ghana, he promoted
pro-African nationalist agenda. Returning to
Nigeria in 1937 , he founded The West
African Pilot which was used to promote
Nigerian nationalism. In 1944 he founded
the National Council of Nigeria and the
Cameroons ( NCNC) with Herbert Macaulay
and became the secretary general of the
National Council in 1946. He served as the
second and last Governor-General of
Nigeria from 1960 to 1963 and the first
President of Nigeria from 1963 to 1966,
holding the presidency throughout the
Nigerian First Republic .

Chief Obafemi Awolowo

Obafemi Awolowo

Awolowo was Nigeria’s foremost federalist,
through his first book Path to Nigerian
Freedom, where he criticised the British
administration and advocated for self-
governance. He was the founder of the
political party Action Group in 1950 , and as
head, demanded a federal constitution
which was introduced in the 1954 Lyttleton
Constitution, following the model proposed
by him as he led the Western Region
delegation . He was the first Leader of
Government Business and Minister of Local
Government and Finance , as well as the
first Premier of the Western Region under
Nigeria’s parliamentary system , from 1952
to 1959 .

Sir Ahmadu Bello

Ahmadu Bello

Bello’ s political activities started out in 1934
as the District Head of Rabah by Sultan
Hassan dan Muazu . In 1948 , he got a
government scholarship and was off to
England to study local government
administration. On his return, he
represented Sokoto in the regional House
of Assembly and used this position to
develop emirates such as Kano , Bornu, and
Sokoto. He was the first president of the
Northern Peoples Party ( NPP) and became
the first Premier of Northern Nigeria in
1954. He forged an alliance with Azikiwe to
form Nigeria’s first indigenous federal
government which led to independence
from Britain .

Chief Anthony Enahoro

Anthony Enahoro

My Namesake
Enahoro was one of Nigeria’ s foremost anti-
colonial and pro-democracy activists. At age
21, he became the editor of The Southern
Nigerian Defender, Ibadan , in 1944. In the
early 1940s , he was immersed in the
struggle for Nigeria’s independence as a
student leader and leading protests which
got him jailed by the colonial government .
In 1953 , he was the first to submit a
parliamentary motion for the Nigeria’s
independence and has been regarded by
academics as the father of “Nigeria State ”.
Enahoro’ s motion was eventually granted
in 1960 .:

Celebrities / Interesting Stories That Made Our Week by ElTommyBlaq(m): 2:10pm On Oct 01, 2017
RIP P -Square , RIP Hugh Hefner , RIP to the
BA hostess who ‘beefed ’ Nigerians. But
hello to Meghan Markle and the One Corner
dance. Here are the stories that made our
week…

Peter and Paul square off

After years of speculation about their
rivalry, the P -Square brothers have finally
split and in dramatic fashion . The media
circulated a video showing the brothers
furiously arguing and a letter of
termination supposedly by Peter Okoye
announcing his departure from the group
and accusing twin Paul and brother Jude of
shocking hostilities. It ’s a sad end for the
group, which dominated afrobeats for years
with hits like Chop My Money and Beautiful
Onyinye.

When Harry met Meghan

The prince and his sweetheart , American
actress Meghan Markle, star of legal drama
Suits have quietly gone public as a royal
couple, holding hands at the UK ’s Invictus
(paralympic style) Games in. Media
speculation is mounting that an
engagement is imminent . Markle has
broken the mould for all British royal
girlfriends so far . She is black (mixed race ),
they hold hands in public ( Kate and William
never do ) and she is a divorcee , previously
a no-no . Time will tell how they will fit into
the royal household .

All things must end Hef - entually

(FILES) This file photo taken on January 15 ,
2014 shows Hugh Hefner posing during
Playboy’s 60th Anniversary special event in
Los Angeles, California. Hugh Hefner ,
the silk pajamas -wearing founder of Playboy
Magazine who helped steer nudity into the
American mainstream died Wednesday ,
September 27, 2017 his magazine announced
on Twitter. He was 91 years old .

The secret to a long and happy life ? The
controversial king of sex , founder of the
Playboy brand and legendary
nymphomaniac died at the grand old age of
91 after a life promoting and enjoying sex
and young women. Hugh Hefner , who
changed the way we look at and sell sex ,
filled his house with semi - clad women and
wild parties . One could speculate that his
death from “ natural causes ” was the best
way to go.

One Corner dance craze hits Nigeria

Reekado Banks doing the “One Corner ”
dance
If you’re prudish stop reading because the
latest dance crazy has landed and it ’s quite
rude. The One Corner dance by Patapaa
which involves gyrating against a piece of
furniture or wall has taken over Ghana and
now gone viral here after Reekado Banks
(pictured ) and Falz were both videoed
taking part . The dance appears inspired by
the Jamaican ‘daggering ’ dance in which
case now might be a good time to clear the
dancefloor.

BA hostess ’s ‘ beef’ with Nigerians

A Snapchat video emerged this week of a
British Airways hostess ranting about
Nigerian customers prior to a Heathrow –
Abuja Flight. The air hostess made racial
slurs about Nigerians demanding beef and
even referred to them having big b ****s .
The video went viral, shocking many
around the world . 23 -year- old Joanne
Wickenden who made the comments was
identified within days and fired by BA who
are normally known for their
professionalism.

Events / Germany Celebrates First Gay Marriages by ElTommyBlaq(m): 1:52pm On Oct 01, 2017

Two German men made history Sunday by
saying “ I do” and becoming the first same - sex
couple to marry after decades of struggle , but
campaigners say the battle for equal rights isn ’t
over.

Wedding bells were to ring out in Berlin,
Hamburg, Hanover and other German cities
where local authorities have exceptionally
opened their doors on a Sunday, allowing
weddings on the day the law comes into effect.
Bodo Mende , 60 , and partner Karl Kreile, 59,
exchanged their vows at a desk decked out
with white flowers and rainbow flags .

Then, they turned to offer a shot of their first
embrace as a married couple to the throng of
photographers and TV crews from around the
world who packed the south Berlin registry
office alongside their friends and family.
“I ’m unbelievably satisfied , this is extremely
symbolic to be recognised as a completely
normal couple and no longer to have a second -
class marriage,” Kreile said after the two cut a
slice of rainbow cake .

Mende and Kreile , longtime gay marriage
campaigners who have been together since
1979, wanted to tie the knot as soon as possible
— after being among the first to enter a civil
partnership back in 2002 .

“This is a day we can really call historic,”
Angelika Schoettler , mayor of the capital ’s
Tempelhof-Schoeneberg district, told the pair.
“I hope a great many couples will seal a bond
for life in this room, or others like it . ”
The dash to exchange vows comes three
months after lawmakers voted to give
Germany’s roughly 94,000 same - sex couples
the right to marry , following a shift in position
by Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Germany becomes the 15 th European nation to
legalise gay marriage.

The Netherlands led the way in 2000, followed
piecemeal by other European countries
including Spain, Sweden, Britain and France .
Same-sex relationships have become so
normalised that polls show around 75 percent
of Germans are in favour of gay marriage.
Merkel’s change of heart
By extending existing law to same -sex pairs,
Germany’s gay couples automatically gain the
same tax advantages and adoption rights as
heterosexual families .

Along with Germany’s Greens party, the gay
and lesbian rights organisation LSVD began its
battle for equal marriage rights around the
year 1990 .

But progress was slow and since 2001 gay
couples have had to make do with a civil
partnership law, broadened over the years to
remove more and more gaps between gay and
straight couples ’ rights.

The final breakthrough came quite suddenly in
the end, sparked by Merkel’s unexpected
announcement in June that she would allow
her conservative MPs to vote their conscience
on the issue.
Merkel said her thinking changed after a
“memorable experience” when she met a
lesbian couple who lovingly care for eight
foster children in her Baltic coast constituency.
Her surprise shift in position after 12 years of
blockade by her Christian Democrats and their
Bavarian allies — was seen by some as a cynical
ploy to rob her challengers of a popular cause
ahead of September’s general election.
The chancellor herself voted against the bill,
arguing that the German constitution still
defines marriage as “the union of a man and a
woman”.
“I still think it was indecent to delay for so
many years, and the fact that she voted no ,”
lawmaker Johannes Kahrs, gay and lesbian
affairs commissioner for the Social Democratic
Party, told AFP.

June was a memorable month for gay rights in
Germany, as MPs also voted to quash the
convictions of thousands of men convicted
under a Nazi -era law against same -sex
relationships which had remained on the
statute book until 1994 .

But there are still an array of issues familiar
across Western democracies, like blood
donations or access to reproductive medicine,
where homosexuals can be treated differently.
And the constitution must still be amended to
fully protect against discrimination over
gender or sexual orientation , Kahrs insisted.

“These are all things that we ’ll tackle bit by
bit,” he said. ”The important thing is that we ’ve
pushed through the opening of marriage , and
that’s the signal everyone needed .”

I have to tell somebody about this, and I can't tell
anybody I know, so I guess it's gonna be you. My
name is Rick, I'm 18, and I'm in my last year of high
school. I live with my mom in a two bedroom
apartment on the outskirts of downtown Chicago.
Mom cuts hair and does facials and waxing for a
living.

Every morning at 6:00 AM sharp she comes into my
room with a cup of coffee and wakes me up for
school. She always puts the coffee on my
nightstand and then sits down on the side of the
bed. "Hey Big Guy, up and at 'em. Time to rise and
shine!" Same time, same routine every morning.
"Hey Mom." I roll around under the covers while
she shakes my shoulders, pats my butt and kisses
my neck. "A few more minutes?" Same thing, every
morning.
"Sure," she says. "You can get to school late. What
college is going to care if you don't get to class on
time?"

"Crap." I yawn, roll out of bed in my boxer shorts,
grab the coffee, and head for the bathroom. Same
thing, every morning.
So one night a few weeks ago, Mom went to a PTA
meeting. As soon as she left, I called up my
girlfriend Cindy and asked her to come over. We
smoked a little weed and drank a little beer in the
backyard, and then made out for a while in my
room. It got late, my girlfriend left, and I fell asleep.
Next thing I knew: "Hey Big Guy, up and at 'em!"
"Arrgh." I was a little hung over.

"C'mon, Rick, get up." She put one hand on my
shoulder and the other hand on my butt, and started
rocking me back and forth.
"OK, I'm up, I'm up!" Mom stepped back as I pulled
away the covers and stood up. I heard her gasp,
and I looked at her. She was staring at my crotch. I
looked down. Shit! After Cindy left I had fallen
asleep in the nude. Now I was standing right in front
of my mom with a serious morning hard-on: all 8
inches was pointing proudly right at her. As I stood
frozen there for a moment, her eyes never wavered
from my dick.

"Shit, Mom, I'm sorry!" I said as I climbed back into
bed and pulled the sheet over me.
"What?" Mom hadn't moved. She seemed to be in
some kind of trance.
"I forgot I was naked."

"Oh. That." She finally came out of it, and sat down
on the bed. She put her hand on my stomach –
dangerously close to my still rock-hard cock, I
thought. "Honey, I've seen everything there is to
see on you... although, not for a while, I admit.
You've... um, been developing nicely, I see. Nothing
to be embarrassed about."

"Jeez, Mom, I'm embarrassed that I was standing in
front of you with a hard-on."
"Honey, that's perfectly normal, especially in a
young man your age. I'm your mom and I love you,
and nothing you do can embarrass me, Sweetie."
She gave me a little hug and stood up. "Now, get up
and get into the shower." She stood back from the
bed and waited.
Feeling sheepish, I pulled back the sheet and rolled
out of bed. As I stood up, I saw Mom's eyes move
downwards towards my erection again. Before I
could walk to the bathroom Mom stepped towards

Business / How To Turn Bar Soap Into Liquid Soap by ElTommyBlaq(m): 3:51pm On Sep 24, 2017
As much as one may like bar soaps, many
prefer liquid soaps. Bar soaps get dirty and
can help transfer germs. Plus nobody likes
it when their soap drops and they have to
bend over to pick it up . Liquid soaps , on
the other hand , are easy to handle and can
be shared .

Anyway, for those who maybe have bar
soaps they love but wish could be in liquid
form, here ’s an easy way to turn your bar
soap into body wash .

This makes about 2 litres of liquid soap
from one bar of soap .
Homemade liquid hand soap .

What you ’ll need
1 bar soap
Water
1 Tbs glycerin
Essential oil (optional )
Grater
A pot
Measuring cup and spoons
Spatula for stirring
Liquid soap containers with a hand pump
Funnel

Directions
1. Grate the bar soap using the smallest ( or
slightly bigger ) holes on the grater.
2. Measure out 1 cup of soap flakes and pour
in the pot . You can store excess soap for
later use .
3. Add 10 cups of water to the pot and the
tablespoon of glycerin. Cook on medium
heat while stirring until the soap dissolves .
This takes a minute or two .
4. Leave soap to cool completely. Add a few
drops of your favourite essential oil if
you’d like.
5. Pour into containers using your funnel .
Homemade liquid hand soap .

Notes
You can choose to add glycerin or not , but
it’ s preferable to make the soap have a
smooth texture and not be clumpy. Besides,
bar soaps already have glycerin, which is
made from plant oils and used in soaps,
shampoos, moisturisers and the rest.
Every soap has different ingredients in it ,
so this may affect the ingredients you use .
SOme soaps may not need the glycerin,
while some beauty bars may be more
difficult to dissolve .

Crime / Sudan Student Sentenced To Death For Killing A Policeman by ElTommyBlaq(m): 3:10pm On Sep 24, 2017
A court in Sudan on Sunday sentenced a
university student to death after convicting
him of killing a policeman during protests in
the capital last year , a defence lawyer said.

Asim Omer, who was studying at Khartoum
University, was arrested in December 2016 and
charged with killing the policeman after
hundreds of students clashed with security
forces at the campus on the banks of the Blue
Nile in April of that year.

Last month , the court found Omer guilty , and
on Sunday sentenced him to be hanged .
“The judge sentenced Asim Omer to be hanged
to death after finding him guilty of killing a
policeman, ” defence lawyer Mohamed Arabi
told AFP, adding that he would appeal .
After sentencing, during which AFP was unable
to gain access to the courtroom, police fired
tear gas to disperse a protest by students
gathered outside the court.

The protests relocated to areas in and around
Khartoum University , with those
demonstrations also dispersed by the same
means.
The opposition Popular Congress Party, of
which Omer is a member , rejected the court’s
ruling.
“The sentencing of Asim Omer is illegal because
the judge didn ’t have full evidence to convict
him,” the party said in a statement .
“We will continue our fight in the higher court
and all alternatives are open to us to save his
life. ”

Students at Khartoum University demonstrated
several times last year against an alleged plan
to sell off buildings belonging to the
institution .
The government denied the charge, and police
often resorted to firing tear gas.
Sunday’s ruling “definitely affects the image of
the country and the image of the judiciary ” ,
said prominent human rights activist Mudawi
Ibrahim Adam .

In late 2016 , sporadic anti-government rallies
were staged in Khartoum after the government
raised fuel prices.
The demonstrations were swiftly broken up by
security forces , and dozens of opposition
leaders and activists like Ibrahim Adam were
arrested.

Adam was released last month under a
presidential pardon.
The bloodiest crackdown on protesters came in
September 2013 , when dozens of
demonstrators were killed during anti-
austerity rallies.

Thousands of people took to the streets of
Khartoum and other regions calling for the
downfall of President Omar al-Bashir ’s regime ,
also after fuel subsidies were slashed .
Amnesty International said at the time that
about 200 people were killed, hundreds
wounded and more than 800 arrested . The
government gave a toll of less than 100 dead .

Crime / Re: An Egyptian Court Jails Two People For Life Over Deadly Stadium Stampede by ElTommyBlaq(m): 2:59pm On Sep 24, 2017
ElTommyBlaq:
An Egyptian court jailed two people for life on
Sunday and 12 to between two and 10 years
over violence that led to a deadly football
stadium stampede in Cairo.

At least 19 people died in the disaster after
police fired tear gas at fans who tried to push
their way into the stadium in February 2015.
The defendants faced charges including murder,
thuggery and vandalism , and were accused of
clashing with police , leading to the stampede .
Two received life sentences, three were given
10 years, five got seven years, three were jailed
for three years each and one received a two-
year sentence .

All of the accused were in court for the verdict
which can still be appealed.
The fixture between Cairo teams Zamalek and
ENPPI was one of the first premier league
games open to the public since a ban on fans
after more than 70 people died in stadium riots
in Port Said in 2012.

The government reinstated the ban after the
2015 stadium deaths in the capital .
Egypt’s hard core football fans, known as
Ultras, have often clashed with police , including
in political unrest that toppled two presidents .
The prosecution accused the Islamist Muslim
Brotherhood, designated a “terrorist group” in
2013, of financing Zamalek supporters called
Ultras White Knights to “ spread chaos and
suspend (football ) activity ”.

The government cracked down on supporters
of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, who was
ousted by the army in July , 2013 .
Initially, the crackdown mainly targeted
Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood, but later
expanded to include other members of the
opposition.

Initially, the crackdown mainly targeted
Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood, but later
expanded to include other members of the

Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of an Abuja Federal High
Court has struck out one of the nine counts of
$1.6bn crude oil fraud leveled against an ally of
former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-
Madueke, Jide Omokore, and five others.

The judge struck out the eighth-count after
hearing an application filed by Diezani, claiming
that she was indicted in the particular count, but
was not availed the opportunity to defend herself.

Accused in the case include, Omokore, his two
companies, Atlantic Energy Brass Development
Limited and Atlantic Energy Drilling Concepts
Limited.

Other defendants are a former Managing Director
of the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company,
Victor Briggs; a former Group Executive Director,
Exploration and Production of the Nigerian
National Petroleum Corporation, Abiye Membere;
and a former Manager, Planning and Commercial
of the NNPC, David Mbanefo and the former
Petroleum Minister, Alison-Madueke.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,
EFCC, had instituted nine counts of criminal
diversion of about $1.6bn alleged to be part of
proceeds of sales of petroleum products
belonging to the Federal Government, against
Omokore and six others.

EFCC accused Allison-Madueke alongside Biggs,
Membere and Mbanefo, in count eight of aiding
Omokore to launder money.

Foreign Affairs / Iran Translator Defends Country, Misinterprets Trump's Speech by ElTommyBlaq(m): 3:34pm On Sep 20, 2017
An Iranian television translator defended
himself Wednesday after being widely
criticised for soft- balling US President Donald
Trump’ s attacks on Iran in his maiden speech
to the UN General Assembly.

Nima Chitsaz, a translator for state broadcaster
IRIB, said he had decided in the heat of the
moment to spare his Persian-speaking viewers
from the verbal attacks by the US president.

“I don’t think it would be nice for me to speak
on national TV against my own country ,” he
later told IRINN television .

As a result , when Trump accused Iran of being
a “depleted rogue state whose chief exports
are violence , bloodshed and chaos” , Chitsaz’ s
Persian translation was simply : “Iran speaks of
destroying Israel.”

Trump later told the UN assembly: “Other than
the vast military power of the United States…
Iran’s people are what their leaders fear the
most. ”

Which was translated for Iranian viewers as :
“The US Army is a very strong army and the
Iranian nation is a very strong nation .”

“This is what causes the regime to restrict
internet access , tear down satellite dishes ,
shoot unarmed student protesters , and
imprison political reformers ” was relayed as:
“Many incidents happen in Iran which are
unacceptable to us.”

Chitsaz was slammed on social media , with one
reformist politician accusing him of “ censoring
and distorting ” the speech .

Even the semi -official ISNA news agency said it
would further erode trust in the Iranian media,
and push viewers to use exiled Persian
channels instead.

“Are you paid to translate or to translate
whenever you see fit?” wrote one of many
mocking Twitter users.

“You should have translated Trump ’s nonsense
so that people could better judge this stupid
person ,” argued another .

Chitsaz responded by saying that the English
had been left loud enough for people to
translate for themselves.
“I think anybody else in my place would not
have translated it ,” he said.

Phones / The Iphone X From An Android User’s Perspective by ElTommyBlaq(m): 9:28am On Sep 20, 2017

It’s been almost a year since the Google Pixel made me put down my iPhone and transformed me from a Google apps user on Apple hardware to a pure Google acolyte. In the grand tug of war between mobile religions, I’m now pulled in the direction of Android, and I can’t express much regret about it. But Apple has just made official its biggest redesign and rethink of the iPhone ever, and so I was definitely curious about the iPhone X and the future it paints for the Apple ecosystem. As it turns out, though, the iPhone X really isn’t a phone designed to draw me back in; it’s more customer service to existing iPhone users than an appeal to new ones.

The Android user hat isn’t the only one I wear, but here are my main iPhone X takeaways from the perspective of someone deeply immersed in the Android realm:

A radical iPhone redesign is a good thing for everyone, no matter what it looks like or who buys it. I think this is an important point that’s all too often disregarded: any sufficiently ambitious company should dread the stagnation of its competitors, which is liable to lead to complacency and a slowdown in progress. When the United States put people on the moon in the 1960s, those efforts were spurred by the threat of the Soviet Union making it there first. Having a strong rival is essential to keeping up the pace of innovation. Google and its myriad Android hardware partners have always had that in Apple’s iPhone, and this major redesign will give them a fresh and different antagonist to measure up against.

The new iPhone X hardware design doesn’t thrill me at all. I know this part is subjective, but having seen the Galaxy S8 and Note 8, the Essential Phone and the LG V30, I am no longer wowed by (almost) bezel-less screens. I’ve now used multiple devices like that and, in all honesty, the absentee bezels are something I forget about very quickly. I don’t feel like I’m using a radically new and different design, and though it’s a little awkward to return to a phone with old-school bezels like the HTC U11, I’ve recently done it and survived the supposed regression. What I don’t fancy about the iPhone’s new look is the extra glossy glass back, punctuated by a chunky, protruding dual-camera module: it’s supposed to be ultra minimalist, yet it has this big eyesore on it. And the same is true of the front, where the top notch makes for a good brand identifier but a questionable design choice.

The under-the-hood upgrades that Apple announced are likely to be significant, including the first GPU designed by Apple itself and a battery life that’s supposedly two hours longer than that of the iPhone 7.

The cameras are said to have physically larger sensors too, which may help the iPhone catch up to the rapidly advancing Android competition in the cameraphone race. But does any of that excite my gadget lust or make me wonder whether Apple’s Photos could be as good as Google Photos? No, not yet. The iPhone 7 of last year had one of the most powerful processors ever put inside a mobile device, but I can’t think of a single occasion where I was using an Android phone and wishing I had the extra power of the iPhone.

Apple’s embrace of Qi wireless charging on both the iPhone 8 and iPhone X will not only be significant, it might be the final piece required to make wireless charging a truly mainstream feature. Even if you never buy an iPhone, you should be glad that Apple and Samsung — the two most prolific smartphone makers — have both chosen the same standard. At present, I get a kick out of charging the LG V30 on Samsung’s wireless charging dock, but in the future this sort of cross-compatibility and universality will stretch across both iOS and Android. That’s great news for all, and it lays the foundation for one day having a smartphone that has no ports at all, eschewing cables in favor of wireless data, audio, and power transfer.

Face ID will probably work well, but I don’t see the value in it. Something peculiar has happened in 2017, a year that’s seen both Samsung and Apple abandon their perfectly functional fingerprint sensors embedded in the home button at the front of their flagship phones and replacing it with arcane alternatives. Obviously, the underlying driver is the move to strip away display bezels, but couldn’t both companies have placed a fingerprint sensor in the middle of the back of their devices? Google, LG, Huawei, and countless others have been doing it for years and left no unhappy customers. Instead, Samsung tucked its fingerprint reader in an awkward off-center position and gave us iris scanning to unlock our phones, while Apple’s iPhone X has the world’s most sophisticated (or is that over-engineered?) face authentication system. The best-case scenario for Face ID that I can see is that it matches Touch ID, which already worked very nicely; I can’t get excited for such a sidestep. More worryingly, I expect Android OEMs will go crazy copying Apple’s Face ID, and I expect many of them to do it sloppily, creating the threat of much less secure phones.

Using the same depth-sensing tech and hardware as Face ID, Apple’s animoji system has charmed quite a few people with its ability to motion-capture the user’s face and turn it into animated emoji. I guess I’m too old and / or jaded to find that appealing. Do I get frustrated when silly augmented-reality apps don’t perfectly map their silliness onto my face? Sure, I do, for about 0.5 seconds. Then I move on to doing something more important like watching cat GIFs on the internet. My point is that I don’t think Apple is solving an especially major problem with its animoji, and it’d take some ingenious application of the tech to convince me that I should care about or want it.

The swipe-based iPhone X interface is nothing we haven’t seen before. Whether you want to go as far back as the Palm Pre, or more recently the Nokia N9 or BlackBerry Z10, there have been plenty of attempts at making gesture interfaces work. For various reasons, they’ve all failed to find traction among users, but, like socialism, many people still think that the idea is sound and just hasn’t been properly implemented yet. I remain skeptical. What I’ve seen of the new iPhone UI suggests it’s difficult to intuit and, without the safety valve of a home button, many neophytes might find it bewildering to get around. Until further notice, I’m filing away the iPhone X interface on my list of big questions to be answered about this enigmatic new device.

A major point of distinction I’ve noticed between myself, a person outside the iOS bubble, and my friends and colleagues inside the Apple ecosystem is that we basically can’t think of a new iPhone the same way. I consider it in clinical terms, assessing its specs, value for money, likely durability of the design, and relative advantages to Android alternatives. People who are already entrenched iOS users regard the iPhone X in a more emotional fashion; it’s like they’re about to have a new child rather than a new phone. “I don’t care, I’ve waited three years to upgrade, I’m buying an iPhone X” is one refrain I’ve heard, and it’s thoroughly understandable. If your entire life is tied up in iMessage and other Apple services, your only option for a new phone is another iPhone, and so the iPhone X is a hugely exciting device just by virtue of finally being meaningfully different.

The level of commitment and loyalty that Apple has engendered among its users is exactly what Google is trying to establish with its Pixel line among Android users. I see nothing fanatical or excessive about it, as I think both companies are “locking down” users through the strength of the services and conveniences they provide. But the further we go into the iPhone X and Google Pixel future, the more dividing lines I’m seeing between the two paths.

Apple’s new features are intrinsically tied to its new hardware — such as the multi-sensor array required for Face ID and animoji face mapping — while Google is providing free Google Photos storage and the best camera algorithms in the business with its Pixel line. It’s probably because I value the latter company’s offering so highly that I can’t truly get excited about the novelties from the former.

In summary, I’m glad the iPhone X exists, and I’m optimistic about it making positive waves in the wider smartphone market, but I am not myself attracted by it. That’s in part because of the pace of innovation among Android rivals, and in part because Apple is serving a demographic that I’m no longer squarely in the middle of. I have no problem with any of that, I think it’s the sign of a vibrant market that there’s choice and variety. But for now at least, I think I’ll skip the $999 glass iPhone and look forward instead to October 4th and Google’s next Pixels. The difference for me, as a yearlong Android devotee, is that an Apple event is fun and exciting just out of sheer tech enthusiasm, but a new Google product launch is thrilling because it has a high chance of being my next phone purchase.

Computers / What To Do If Atm Swallows Your Card by ElTommyBlaq(m): 8:26am On Sep 19, 2017
There are steps to protect your cards and what
you can do if the Automatic Teller
Machineswallows your card, according to
http:/ /echeck. org.

Wait for 10 minutes to restart :

As annoying as it
may be , I suggest you wait 10 to 15 minutes
first before doing anything . There is a good
chance the ATM machine software will reset on
its own and your card will spit back out.
Take note of the time , place and location : If
waiting for 10 to 15 minutes does not resolve
the issue, well move on to this . Note down the
time the machine swallowed your card and try
to be as specific as possible. Note the date , the
place you are , and the type of machine (if
possible ).

For example , is it an ATM outside a bank and /
or controlled and branded by the bank, or is it a
stand – alone ATM in the street, or an ATM in a
mall? Does it have a name , brand logo , and / or
any other details ?

I s there a number you can call on the machine
itself , or any helpful information that may be
relevant ? If so , you should make a note of it
and have a quick look at the ATM to see if it has
been tampered with . You may want to use your
phone to take a picture of the ATM and the
numbers on it so you can show a bank later.

Contact the bank account provider:

The bank or
institution you use will have its own rules and
own definitions. Some will say you have to raise
a claim with the bank, others will say that you
have to raise an inquiry , and some may say
your account is frozen and freeze your account
until the matter is resolved.

It is not wise to contact the ATM provider
unless the bank you use and the ATM provider
are the same company . In this case , your
problem may be resolved a little quicker. When
you raise the issue with your bank, they will
often contact the ATM provider ; but if you raise
it with the ATM provider , then they will refer
you to your bank and / or account provider.

If you can’t find the bank associated with the
ATM , look for the contact number on the ATM
( there usually is ) and call it for support. You
may be able to get a technician to come to the
location right away and deal with the issue.

Sports / Manchester United Legend Rio Ferdinand Turns To Boxing by ElTommyBlaq(m): 7:21am On Sep 19, 2017
Former England star Rio Ferdinand is due to
announce on Tuesday he is going to try and
become a professional boxer just two months
away from his 39th birthday , according to the
Daily Telegraph.

Ferdinand, who won 81 caps and made over
300 appearances for Manchester United , is an
avid boxing fan and has admitted spending
time boxing in the gym has helped clear his
head a bit after losing his wife and the mother
of his three children Rebecca Ellison to breast
cancer in 2015 .

Ferdinand, who has become a respected TV
pundit since hanging up his boots in 2015 , is
due to make what has been termed “a major
news announcement” on Tuesday but will need
to convince the British Boxing Board of Control
he merits a licence .

He wouldn ’t be the first footballer to turn to a
career in the ring as former Sheffield United
striker Curtis Woodhouse won the British
light- welterweight title in 2012 .
