Business / 5 Major Ongoing Transportation Projects In Nigeria by emanifestng: 3:08pm On Sep 21, 2018
The Nigeria Transport sector under the Buhari led government has seen tremendous development across every area of the transportation sector. And this development is attributed to the N276Billion budget allocated to the Transportation Ministry.

This development can be seen across both the federal and state level as major repairs, constructions and maintenance are ongoing. In July President Buhari commissioned the first phase of the Abuja Light Rail Mass Transit Project which is a giant stride for the nation as it’s very first light rail project. There have also been other finished and ongoing projects in the Nigerian Transport sector. Below are 5 ongoing projects you should know about;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXGy4k-CMeM
1. Oshodi Transport Interchange - The transport interchange is being constructed by the Lagos State government, and executed by Planet Project. The governor during a recent visit said the project would be delivered by December, but the contractor seems to want to beat the deadline of the governor, as the Managing Director of Planet Project, Abiodun Otunola said the interchange would be completed in October 2018. According to him, this is because the job has reached 70 per cent completion level.

The project, when operational, will serve, at peak, an average of one million people though at the early stage of the commencement of business, about three hundred thousand passengers would be served daily, with each of the three terminals serving 300,000 passengers daily. He disclosed that every hour, 300 buses would be departing the terminals.

2. Lagos-Ibadan Highway Construction – This is one of Nigeria’s most used highways because it’s a gateway to other states and it’s plied by a lot of Nigerians on a daily bases but little have done in terms of maintenance and renovation of the road over the years. With every new government promising to finish the road but end up leaving it undone and it has become a death trap as the rate of accident is high due to the bad road and abandoned construction work.

Good news is that the Julius Berger has returned to the road and major work is currently ongoing to finish the road once and for all. Once the road is completed it will serve it purpose in full capacity.

3. Reconstruction of Apapa-Oshodi Expressway – The formerly abandon road project is underway again after FEC approved N73bn for the reconstruction of the road. Once this road is fixed it will solve the gridlock in that axis and ease commuter’s movement.

4. Lagos-Ibadan-Kano Rail Project – Nigeria’s railway system has derailed over the years and the construction of a rail project from Lagos to Kano is a welcome development. Last month the Minister of Transportation, Dr. Rotimi Amaechi announced the commencement of the project and noted that when completed, the project would facilitate seamless movement of cargos from Apapa and solve perennial gridlock in the area.

5. Abuja – Kano Expressway Project: This road project was awarded in December 2017 to Julius Berger at a contract sum of N155 billion. The road will serve as a major trunk road linking south to the northern part of the country. The project is said to have a completion period of 36 months. Upon completion, the road will link Abuja, Kaduna, Zaria, and kano.

This is no doubt that the country will immensely benefit from these projects when they are fully operational. These projects will support the economic development of different parts of the country and ensure Nigeria’s growing population have an efficient transport system.
