Sports / There's No FIFA Ban On Moshood Abiola Stadium And VAR Was Not Stolen – NFF by emassflourish(m): 6:22pm On Apr 01, 2022
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has rubbished reports that came off the mayhem which occurred at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abujavafter Tuesday’s FIFA World Cup playoff match between Nigeria and Ghana.

NFF’s General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi in a statement released on Friday April 1, described claims of Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja being banned indefinitely by FIFA over the fans’ violence and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) equipment used for the match being stolen as fake news.

The Statement Read;

“We are alarmed at the influx of incorrect reports, otherwise known as fake news, mostly in the social media.

“There is no truth to the reports that the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja has been banned for any length of time by FIFA.

“It is a concoction by some persons with fertile imagination. The NFF has not received any such communication from either FIFA or CAF.

“There has also been an outlandish report that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) equipment that was installed for the match had been stolen.

“We initially thought this was an April Fool prank but it is alarming that some media outlets are taking it serious.

“Nothing of such happened. The VAR equipment remains intact and has been returned to the FIFA office in Zurich, Switzerland by Sebastian Runge, FIFA’s Head of Technology.

“The NFF understands that Nigerians in their generality were sorely disappointed by the result of the match, which came short of having the Super Eagles at the World Cup.

“It is a painful situation for everyone, including ourselves at the Federation.

“However, we are appealing that the propensity for half truths and outright falsehood be discouraged. We believe that the present squad of Super Eagles is still capable of achieving great things.”

Politics / School Notebooks: N998 Million Oyo Govt Project Exposes by emassflourish(m): 6:14pm On Apr 01, 2022
According to a report by SaharaReporters, a review of the Oyo State Open Contracting portal done by Dataphyte has shown that secondary school notebook contracts worth N998 million and awarded between August 2019 and December 2020 have been subject to contract inflation, fraudulent contract bidding and contract ambiguity.

The contract, awarded in three batches, is to supply customised notebooks to secondary schools in the state. The first set of 12 contracts totalling N456.504 million was awarded on August 28, 2019.

The second set was awarded in June 2020, with a total value of N94.196 million and described as “production of second batch exercise books for students of public secondary schools in the state”.

The third set awarded in December 2020 at N446.370 million was for the supply of 212,505 copies of 60 leaves’ notebooks. The description stated that the notebooks are meant for the 2020/2021 session of public secondary schools in the state.

The December 2020 contract raises concerns as to why it will cost N446.370 million to supply 212,505 copies of 60 leaves notebooks. On the open contracting portal announcing the award of the contract, the description for the award says, “Production of 212,505 copies of 60 leaves customised exercise books for students of public secondary schools for the 2020/2021 academic session”.

It added that the books would be supplied at the contract value of N446,370,480.

By this budget, each copy of the 60 leaves notebook cost the state N2,100 to print.

But should one customised sixty leaves notebook cost N2,100?

Checks by Dataphyte show that a non-customised 60 leaves notebook in Mokola, Ibadan, costs one hundred naira (N100).

Dataphyte sought quotations for a similar description of goods from printing presses and the quotes put each copy of the customised notebook at between N200 and N230, one printing press offered N158 per copy for 60 leaves of the customised notebook.

Also, the higher the number of copies, the lesser the price for each copy. At the maximum cost of 230,212,505 copies should cost around N48,876,150.

The quoted price by the state government appears exaggerated even if other services like delivery of the notebooks to each school and design of the customised pages were factored into the cost.

In the case of the supply of 60 leaves of the notebook for N2100 each in December 2020, the Public Procurement Act states that “The Bureau may refuse to issue a certificate of No Objection to Contract Award on grounds that the price is excessive.”

Project Awarded to Contract Splitting Companies

Aside from the inflated cost of contracts, Dataphyte’s investigation shows that three of the four companies awarded contracts on December 17, 2020, are owned by the same person.

Of the four contractors who won the contracts, three, Jeda Global Ventures, Insider Multipurpose Ventures and Sure Etiquette Media Plus Limited, are owned by Mr Oriyomi Hamzat Abdulrahman.

Mr Oriyomi Hamzat is a renowned broadcaster who recently founded Agidigbo FM in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo.

Mr Oriyomi is known for social justice activism but was arrested in 2018 by the Department of State Services (DSS) before he was released after spending 15 days in detention.

In 2021, Governor Seyi Makinde commended Hamzat for establishing Agidigbo FM, noting that the government was willing to support the station to thrive.

In 2020, Mr. Oriyomi registered two companies on the same day. Jeda Global Ventures and Insider Multipurpose Ventures were registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission on the same day, September 8, 2020.

And two months after registration, these companies won a contract from the state government.

The Federal Government on Monday stated that it is safe for Nigerians to travel by rail.

However, hours after the claim, bandits bombed an Abuja-Kaduna bound train killing and injuring many passengers.

It was gathered that the train was bombed leaving many people in a state of panic and shock.

Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information, said the current administration had done well in ensuring safety of rail transport across the country.

Mohammed, who spoke at a press briefing on Monday, said the Federal Government had performed excellently in the provision of infrastructure.

The minister also listed rail projects the current Government had completed across the country.

According to Mohammed: “We are proud that in our time, Nigerians are once again able to travel by rail, this time in total comfort and safety.

“Lagos-Ibadan, Abuja-Kaduna, Warri-Itakpe-Ajaokuta and Abuja Metroline are shining examples of our rail revolution. And we are just getting started. We have the rehabilitation of the Port-Harcourt-Maiduguri Eastern Narrow Gauge Railway project that cuts through Rivers, Imo, Anambra, Benue, Enugu, Ebonyi, Gombe, Yobe, Adamawa and Borno states, and the Bonny Deep Sea and Railway Industrial Park.

“We have the Kano-Maradi standard gauge line that passes through some economic hubs of the country, including Kazaure, Daura, Katsina and up to the border town of Jibiya and the city of Maradi in Niger Republic.”

Meanwhile, bandits have been attacking some rail lines across the country.

In October 2021, gunmen had attacked a Kaduna-Abuja train.

On Monday, gunmen believed to be bandits struck again, attacking the rail track of an Abuja-Kaduna train.
