Today, you and I will go through 7 deadly mistakes undergraduates make and how to avoid them. We are all students and always in the field of learning. What I am trying to say here is that when you make a mistake, there are only three things you should ever do. Admit it Learn from it Don’t repeat it Allskulnews..com is in the business of sensitizing and changing the perceptions of several undergraduates. We all make mistakes, have struggles and even regret things in our past. However, what we never realize is that we are not our mistakes or our struggles but we are here right now with the power to shape our day and our future. Basically, this is the reason for this article on Deadly Mistakes Undergraduates Make. Before I move into the topic proper, I will share you a good story. Just try to pick the points from it and patient to read through to the end. Don’t Be Tired Of Reading The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience. A lot of graduates live day in day out with the regret of not thinking about money while in school. I spoke to a friend [200 level Petroleum Engineering Student] a few days ago on WhatsApp and she made the following statement. I am tired of school jawe, I just want to finish school and then I will work in an oil company In my mind, “I just said shey your father has an oil company ba?”. Well enough of the beating around the bush. Let’s head immediately to the deadly mistakes undergraduates make and how to avoid them. Always Thinking That You Will Get A dream Job Related To Your Course Of Study After Graduating Just like I illustrated with the what a friend said above about my Petroleum engineering friend who wants to work in an oil company, the bitter truth about the matter is that he might graduate as a petroleum engineer and after frustrations about not getting an oil work, will now be selling Red Oil in the market. Oil company work is not child’s play to get that easy nowadays. The question that should continuously run through your mind is that “If by the time I graduate and I couldn’t get my dream Job, What will I do Next”. Nevertheless, I am not saying you should be negative but all I am saying is that You should have other plans. To avoid being stranded is the reason I am writing this article today. Although, the good part is that it is never too late to start something now. To sit down in the library all day reading books alone without thinking of another alternative to making it in life is a dead waste. We are all in the gutter, some of us are looking at the stars. Life doesn’t require that you be the best, only that we try our best. Do not allow people to judge your struggling by the chapter they walked in on. Life begins the moment you begin to take responsibility for your actions. Likewise, it is high time you assume responsibility for yourself. Please note that your age is not a barrier. Of course, you are not also too young to start making decisions. Therefore be strong enough to stand alone, smart enough to know when you need help and brave enough to ask for it. Not Working To Get Money If you have not read it, you can do that now before continuing. I will patiently wait for you to do so. Some students totally rely on their parents for support [school fees, allowance, clothing, materials, toiletries etc]. This immediately makes them feel comfortable and in the actual sense blocks their thinking. Therefore, the only thing that comes to their minds is spending the money without ever thinking of making it their selves. Of course, you can see the result of this attitude everywhere today. This is the major reason you see a lot of jobless graduates everywhere today. Don’t be among these set of graduates, learn from them. Remember it is always better to learn from other people’s experience it will save you from falling into the same situation that will have a long life tribal mark on your life. Not Preparing For Yourself Without Certificate As an educated individual, you should have different plans. If plan A doesn’t work, you can fall back to plan B and even when Plan B doesn’t work out, move to the next plan. Always have a plan. Not Learning A Skill The capacity to learn is a gift. The ability to learn is a skill while the willingness to learn is a choice. It is very imperative to note that only the people who take learning, growth and skill development into their own hands will be tomorrows leaders. No matter how talented you are, your talent will fail you if you are not skilled. Skill is a achieved through practice. You need to work hard and dedicate yourself to being better every single day. Modern education is overrated in the world, especially in Nigeria. Mark Zuckerberg has to leave school first to pursue his passion and look at Facebook today. According to Vanguard Newspaper of 24th July, 2008,almost every home in Nigeria Has a graduate. Likewise, according to prediction, by 2020, every home will have 5 graduates each who are jobless. Therefore where does that leave us? Graduating is never the problem, achieving something meaningful with your life latter is what matters most. A lot of our graduates are not employable. This is very appalling in the face of the present day realities. There is a vast difference between being an academician and being educated. Therefore, this means that you can have a BSC and still not be educated. Academics places its focus in your certificates where as being educated drives you to be successful. But then, you can use your academic ability to power your education. Therefore, what’s the solution to this problem? You simply have to think outside the box. there was an illustration I saw in John C Maxwell’s book titled “The Leader”. See the illustration below and try to pick excerpts from it. deadly mistakes undergraduates make The only way to connect all the circles is by thinking outside the box. Think of the services you can render to people that can yield income. Start thinking now and when you have one but you can’t power it, we have a charger right here. We can help you with ideas that will bring your idea to fruition. Thinking That There Is Still Time Like I said at the beginning of the deadly mistakes undergraduates make, I knew my life started immediately I got admitted to school. I began to think for myself. One must work with time and not against it. The good thing about time is that it is free but priceless. You can’t own it but you can use it. Moreover, you can’t keep it but you can spend it. Finally and most importantly, once you’ve lost it, you can never get it back. There are a lot of people who spend their time carelessly and by the time they realize it, they had wasted reasonable amount of years doing nothing. Whether you agree or not, the people making the real cash today are those not using their certificates. It is more advantageous to start making money now. START THINKING. Zero Thinking There are so many people who really want to make or start making money. But the problem is that they have nothing to offer. Money does not fall from the sky. You must, therefore, have something that people will pay for. The good part is that it is never too late to start now. If you don’t have one now, start thinking of what you can do to start making money now. While thinking about this, make sure it is something that adds value to people’s life or makes life easy for them. The better you are able to think, the bigger the cash you will make. Not Reading Readers they say are leaders. Likewise, it is often said that if you want to hide anything from a black man, hide it in a book. The Worst deadly mistake undergraduates make is not setting up time for self-development. If you wish to achieve worthwhile things in your personal and career life, you must become a worthwhile person in your own self-development. Everyone has free time, therefore use it for self-development. How do you achieve this?. Simple. Spend your money buying self-development books as well as spending your precious time reading them. In addendum to this, are the list of things that will speed up your personal growth, therefore, apply them. Don’t follow the crowd, follow your own way and do what you love. Don’t only learn from success stories, learn from failure stories too. Act like you are confident and can handle everything. Fake it until you make it. Be a better listener and meet new people Choose your vision and dream. Success will start pursuing you. To learn something new, teach others how to do it. Love yourself and take care of your health Be curious and ask questions at all times. Conclusion Remember that the moment you accept total responsibility for everything in your life is the moment you claim the power to change anything in your life. Therefore, be yourself because everyone else is taken. That’s the much I can take on the topic 7 deadly mistakes undergraduates make and how to avoid them. What’s your take on this? Please let us know in the comment box. Thanks For reading. Source:https://allskulnews..com.ng/2018/02/7-deadly-mistakes-undergraduates-make.html |

Eager students and anxious parents are usually concerned about UK student visa application. The UK government wants students from all over the world to apply and study in UK institutions. It helps to build close ties between the UK and other countries. It also has cultural benefits. The main requisites of a smooth UK student visa application process are that one of the educational institutions endorsed by the Department of Education and Skills should accept the student, and the candidate should secure funds for the duration of the course. The need to show liquid funds that would cover costs of the entire course plus living expenses at the time of applying for the visa is non-negotiable. There is also the need to apply for the visa as early as possible or as soon as you receive the offer letter. Many students prefer applying to study in the UK because of the prestigious UK institutions whose certificates are acceptable world wide. There is also availability of one-year master course as well as many scholarships. Another appeal is that students can take up part time work and apply for work permits after they complete their courses. The International Graduate Scheme allows students to find work on completion of their course. The students use the extra time on their visas to apply for jobs and their employee applies for a work permit for them. This is very convenient for the students. Scotland allows up to two years work visas after graduation. Student visa application form for UK is available at the UK Embassy or UK High Commission in your country. The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode last Thursday signed seven bills into law among which is the Yoruba Language Preservation and Promotion Law. With this Law in place, any student who wish to apply for admission into University of Lagos or other higher institutions in Lagos State will need to have a Credit Pass in Youruba Language regardless of their intended course of study. In addition, all state-owned tertiary institutions are to incorporate the use of Yoruba Language in the General Studies (GNS) courses. The Law equally stated that any school in Lagos State that fails to comply with the provisions of Section 2 commits an offence and is liable on first violation to issuance of warning and on subsequent violation be closed down and also pay a fine of N500,000. This has attracted mixed reactions from the public. While some are in support of this development, others are not for obvious reasons. Whats your take on this? The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) sold 1.6 million registration documents for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as at Tuesday. The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Lagos that the board commenced the sales of the document on December 6, 2017 and was originally scheduled to close last Tuesday. However, the board’s Registrar, Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, announced extension of the documents sales to tomorrow in attempt to accommodate candidates who failed to register within the two months window. According to Benjamin, this year’s registration for the examination has proven to be one of the best in recent times. “As at the close of work on Thursday, I can comfortably say that we have registered close to 1.6 million candidates for the examination. “This year’s registration too can be adjudged as one of the best in recent times as it has been smooth, hitch and rancour-free,”Benjamin said. It is very easy to write or sit for an examination. But avoiding poor performance? That one is strong. Just few years ago, you were in primary school and the concern about poor performance wasn’t an issue for you. Now, you have started writing competitive examinations, avoiding poor performance have become a ‘must’. Since the past six years, the rate at which students perform poorly in exams has grown exponentially. To scale through in all these exams, you will agree that avoiding poor performance is the key. It goes back to the first sentence: Avoiding poor performance is much tougher. Yet for all these scenarios we have seen, many students still fail to fight poor performance by all means. Reasons For Poor Performance In Exams 1. Your writing is too poor: Writing is the most important element. It is the first thing people see. You need to give examiners impression that you understand what you are doing or risk loosing his attention. Your writing set expectation for the reader. He believes. “when I go through this beautiful writing, I will be able to see something meaningful” Low and behold, he sees disaster. Good News! Get The Offers Below For Free: A great writing can be positive or negative sentiment, but above all is that it is not very easy to ignore. Make your writing more readable. Let there be little spaces between words. Make the sentences short and simple as well. This tip will help you overcome poor performance in school. 2. You write out of point: Avoiding poor performance is the way. Yes, you want to impress the examiner-but there’s no excuse for writing off the point. You were asked to list 10 parts of the body, but you drew and labeled. I really commend your effort, but it was not necessary. That was not what you were asked to do. You may be telling people that you “killed” the exam. In reality, the exam “killed you”. Go straight to the point. Write something that separates you from competitors and helps you stand out. I think this is a good way to avoid poor performance. 3. You are too slow: One of the major factor sponsoring poor performance in examinations is the time factor. I have been in a situation where I had to attempt 100 “mighty” questions in about forty minutes. Before I knew what was going on, they had already started collecting scripts. Learn through practice. Time yourself while practicing likely exam questions. You may want to start with 5 minutes per question. As time goes on, reduce it to about 40 or 20 seconds as the case may be. It is time to start solving in seconds so as to overcome the guy called poor performance. 4. You never crossed checked: Don’t submit your answers immediately. Cross check it multiple times for all possible sources of error. For example, you may have forgotten to include the S.I units. And for those writing exams with multiple choice questions, check if the answer you picked has the correct unit. You will be amazed the mistakes you correct when you try to cross check. As a matter of fact, you are not perfect. So, there is need to cross check your work. You see students say things like, “I wrote the exam very well, yet poor performance”. Some claim that the examiner deliberately failed them. Well, I don’t know why any examiner would want to intentionally fail you. 5. You never prepared well: The old idea that reading only begins a night to the exam has been thoroughly debunked. You won’t become a magician overnight. The exam you didn’t prepare well for will gladly present you with poor performance. No matter the nature of the exam, never overlook or under-rate it. The course may carry only one unit but, it is capable of making you carry-over. I have written many articles that will help you prepare better for exams. Check some of them out here Tips to last longer in night class Remember 90% of what you have read 10 secrets of successful students The Ultimate Guide to Understanding Student.txt 6. You did not understand the questions: The key to answering questions correctly is the ability to understand the questions. Before you attempt the question, do a thorough analysis. Know: What you are asked to do. The method you are required to adopt What you are not asked to do. Why you arrived at your answer. Why you think other answers are wrong. The focus keyword in the question. Just understand the questions and as well use the right approach. 7. You never used the recommended texts: Until you begin to use the recommended texts, your performance will not be recommended. Questions always come out from recommended texts. You were using the text books that never represented your scheme of work. This resulted to your poor performance. Advice: Always use the right and recommended materials to prepare for exams. You can as well have other good ones. If you find the recommended text difficult to understand, then you may want to read the ultimate guide to understanding student.txt. 8. Your poor performance resulted from y our CTRL+C and CTRL+V attitude: You always copy and paste people’s work. How are you sure that they are correct? Who told you that the answer they will text to you in the next JAMB is correct?. Work hard and say no to examination malpractice. 9. Your performance is poor because you forgot 90% of what you read: This is a very important factor responsible for poor academic performance. If this is the case, then you don’t have to worry. I have solved the problem in my previous article. You may want to read how to remember 90% of what you read in the link above (No 5). 10. You don’t have a strategy: You should be able to develop personal exam answering strategies (PEAS). This will help cover up for your weakness. Remember, You do not have any one to blame for you poor performance in school. Best Regards! |
