W e finally hit the one million mark for plantain stands within two years and that says a lot

When we started up this project we had a lot of era backs and set backs as we went on we strived to correct some of our mistakes, learning along the way the intricacies of growing the crop and how to over come the challenges faced with crop

AND WE CAME OUT STRONGER

Here is a report on the Journey So Far.....

The actual idea of The Plantain City Project Ogun State was to create a zone in the south west were any thing and everything about plantain/banana could be found without stress.and it started 2years ago.
The idea was to change the narrative of plantain/banana for FOOD to INDUSTRIAL purpose
From a Food for the wealthy to a food for everybody
Also creating an industrial hub for the production, processing and marketing of the crop either fresh or processed onto whatever product needed
We wrote wrote foreign industries that made use of the truck of the plantain for highly skilled processing and we were told that for them to consider us we must have at least 3 to 5 million stands of the crop to feed the factory and they have been keeping interest in us till we reach he target
Trust me the journey has not been an easy one for the farmers as we are facing a major challenge in the name of IRRIGATION AND EFFECTIVE WATER SUPPLY, DISTRIBUTION AND DELIVERY to the plantain/banana crop which we must add, is very expensive, hence farmers in the project are left to only one season harvest in stead of all year round harvest

Secondly, due to the weeding challenge, we had to com up with a way to maximize spacing and still get value for money. So we ran a pilot project on inter crop with the plantain and our finds allowed us look at farming from a different angle.

The following was the out come of our experimental pilot project
1. From month 0 to month 3, inter crops such as tomatoes, leafy vegetables, maize can be planted in between the spaces of the plantain without affecting the growth of the crop
2. From month 4 above tree crops shud be planted in between rows of The plantain and maintained
3. These tree crops would serve the dual purpose of both wind breaker
4. That the tree crops would stem from any of orange/lemon/tangerine, coconut, avocado pear,ogbono, agblumo, sour sop e.tc
5. That after the plantain is planted, whole land would be shared equally among the tree crop the farm wish to plant and that the tree crop would not serve as a parastise to the plantain pending when the tree crop itself reaches full maturity ad starts to produce at maximum
6. We themed it the 5 to 10 year project ( 1 acre farm holders) for The Plantain City Ogun State but can be replicated on as much land as possible
The idea is that on that 1 acre of land you can still do your plantain/banana while growing other crops that bring to you extra cash

The vision of THE PLANTAIN CITY PROJECT OGUN STATE is to creat an industrial hub for Plantain/banana farmers, by plantain/banana farmers to serve as a feeder to industries,creating employment and raising the of the crop the agro sector, completely chagin the narrative for the crop

Water is everything to we Plantain farmers hence we dont shy away from the fact that we need help. Irrigation is expensive and we asked for whatever assistance there is from Govt and NGO's to come to our aid to be able to achieve this dream of all year round production

The CAFAS( Cassava farming season) 2019 is officially opened and like always this years farming season promises to be better than last year.

How do you partake in this years CAFAS 2019?
It's simple

You chose either the four year tenure or the the 13months tenure
The four year tenure involves

1. Investing in our cassava project over a period of four years whereby you invest in our cassava farm with a on time payment of a minimum

5 acres at the rate of 100,000 per acre x 5acres

2. You get a total of 50% R.O.I of your initial capital spread over a 4year
period

3. That is to say
Year 1. = 10% OR. 50000
Year 2. = 20%. OR. 100000
Year 3. = 40%. OR. 200000
Year 4 = 50% + your initial capital deposit.
OR
250000 + your initial capital deposit

4. Payments are made on the 12th month after planting

5. Frequent visits to the farm for assessment is recommended for the investor(s) to ascertain progress of the project

The 13 months Tenure
It involves investing in cassava farm over a 13month period were the investor directly monitors his/ or her farm progress.
We render assistance to the farmer such as good cassava stem sourcing, labour and agro service sourcing as well as direct you to good buyers for your cassava tubers

The 13 months tenure requires the potential farmer(s) to

1. Have a minimum of #100,000 per acre set aside to farm 1 acre of cassava and if you want to do more, you multiply #100,000 per acre x the number of acres you want to cultivate

2. Be prepared to be present during major farm activities

3. Visit their aloted acre (s) to ascertain the growth and progress of

4. Absentee farmers are not welcomed as situations might arise

A Brief History

3 years ago we were kind of wondering we farmers don't like planting corn yet you hear people shouting there is so much money in corn farming. So we decided to enter into it. Well let's just say that story didn't end well for us

2 years ago, we went back to the drawing board re-strategised and came back to plant the maize again and this time we sold fresh and the result was encouraging

Last year we took our time and experimented on different plant spacing,fertilizer application, time of planting as well as hybrid seeds and marketing

And the results

Outstanding!!! Oh and we sold fresh because that's were the money is.

Since our last disaster some years back with cassava, we had promised not to introduce any new cropping season without testing the market for both the good the bad and the ugly side of the market

Hence, we are proud to say without doubt that there is big money in corn farming selling it fresh
Now to Business
We will be giving the potential farmer the option of choosing between planting the highly improved hybrid seeds or the local Seed


Run down of the cost of cultivating 1 acre(6 plots) of corn

#136000 - #88,000 = #48,000 or 35% of your investment after 3 months

LABOUR
This another major factor that hurts we farmers badly.

I remember a particular incident that happened 2 years back, we were short of man power to carryout weeding on the farms we owned and also managed and the locals were not helping matters one bit.

You see out location is strategically placed closed to the border so it more of a blessing than a curse to some people while others like we farmers, it is more of a curse than a blessing. My reason being that during February you influx of migrants workers who come into the country to do menial jobs. and at the end of the year, a brand new bike is given to them

Now the previous year, we farmers in the vicinity had gathered money and given it to one of the agents that bring in the yearly workers for us so as to aid us in our various farms but we were in for a shocker

This agent ran away with our money and never returned and we were left stranded at the mercy of the locals and the went for the kill

A plot of land for weeding that would have gone for let's say 1000 naira instantly rose to 3000 naira. It was a case of suck it up, pay the high amount being charged, and loose but not much to market Or alternatively,!don't do the weeding, and you still loose the farm.

To make maters worse was that they didn't do a clean job like those yearly workers. Which led to constant bickering and they even threatened the farmer they would leave the Farm for him to do his weeding by himself. CAN YOU IMAGINE THE RUDE ARROGANCE

How did we solve these problem? Its simple

We Didn't

So what we did was improvised a way of working round the people! Who felt that they were so important that without them we couldn't survive. We search through other states, for farm hands and when we got what we want,.....,....,..........................

I saw one of their adverts for agricultural investors which I did in the year 2015 we agreed on an hectare cassava they planned to plant and harvest for us.(investors).
Later I found out that they suddenly changed the location of the land to another rocky place which was not up to1/5th of the agreed size. I was patient with them for another 6months making 12months.
I complained severally but they didn't see ant need to attend to me....when it was time for harvesting after have paid #110k to them to balance #20k I was told to go do the harvesting myself on a high bushy cassava sparsely planted farmland which I did.....presently as I speak to you we are both at the nearest station at Oke Odan close to the farm land...they are yet to fully balance me. Be very careful with them.

Current 30% of the people who did last year farming season and lost their farmlands due to theft, price drop and matters beyond our control we either replaced,refunded or placed in this seasons farming season that is to begin soon so Mr Patrick u are not the only one that had problem

Ladies and Gentlemen let me help him summarize in his long story
1. due to the certain unscrupulous people and deeds the 1 hectare cassava farm we originally did for him was condemn and he moved to another

2. D new cassava farm we gave him had it's own short comings as begin not up to 1 hectare
so he decide dat he will take the 1 acre and we refund the balance

it is important to note that as at when he entered contractual agreement with us a hectare of cassava cost 130000 to do of which he paid 110000 and the sum he paid covered only to first weeding

3. yes we ended in police station September last year 2ere the repayment model was settled

we were supposed to balance him a total of 64000 after d checks and balances of which we have paid a total 52000 with a bal 12000 which we have deducted as our service charge of 20 percent from the 1 acre he harvested

I saw one of their adverts for agricultural investors which I did in the year 2015 we agreed on an hectare cassava they planned to plant and harvest for us.(investors).
Later I found out that they suddenly changed the location of the land to another rocky place which was not up to1/5th of the agreed size. I was patient with them for another 6months making 12months.
