Politics / South-east Governors Hail Confab Over Recommendation For Creation Of Additional by emindu: 12:11pm On Jul 05, 2014
South East Governors' Forum has commended delegates at the ongoing constitutional conference in Abuja for their unanimous recommendation that an additional state be created for the zone to bring it at par with other geo-political zones of the country.

Chairman of the forum and Abia State Governor, Chief Theodore Orji, in a press statement made available to newsmen in Umuahia, saluted the courage of the delegates in adopting the recommendation which he added, is a major step towards ending decades of political injustice and marginalization against Ndigbo .

The statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Charles Ajunwa, also commended the confab for recommending the creation of more new states from the existing ones across the country, saying this will help correct the imbalance and lopsidedness in state creation supervised by the military.

According to the statement, "this bold step of the conference will also help to diffuse tension in the polity as well as fast track grassroot development ".

"We also commend the leadership of the conference as well as the delegates for their maturity, patriotism and peaceful disposition in conducting the affairs of the confab," the statement said.

The Governors, therefore, called on the National Assembly and other relevant stakeholders to support the recommendation, and to synergise on making the outcome of the confab a working document in the overall interest of Nigeria.

South-East Governors restated their faith in the conference and called on all Nigerians to be united in adopting the final outcome of the exercise as a way to move the country forward .

The Governors also reiterated their unflinching support for President Goodluck Jonathan especially for his courage in organizing the conference despite pockets of oppositions, saying that the recommendations of the confab so far on key contentious issues in the country have vindicated the President's action.

Politics / Critics’re Jealous Of Orji’s Achievements In Abia by emindu: 10:55am On Jul 02, 2014
Mr. Charles Ajunwa, Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Abia State Governor, Chief Theodore Orji, in this interview speaks on the efforts of the state government to transform the state and challenged critics of the governor for a debate on TA Orji’s laudable achievements. Excerpts:
What is your take to critics’ comments that Governor Orji has performed below par?
The governor is not averse to criticisms especially if they are constructive. In fact he welcomes them and uses them to improve on his giant strides. But what we have observed is that some individuals out of hatred are bent on discrediting all that the governor is doing.
They are not doing it with honesty or pointing out any alternative. They are bereft of ideas but just want to make noise to attract attention. Abians see them as nuisance and of course in democracy you have to tolerate their nuisance value. They have sworn to destroy through propaganda, all that the governor has put in place that has positively changed the face of Abia.
But I can tell you the governor is not bordered and has never lost focus on what he wants to achieve and where he wants to leave Abia by the time his tenure expires.
What has the governor done to change the face of Abia?
The governor’s record of achievement is intimidating and that is what is driving his detractors crazy. In which sector can anybody fault the governor’s performance by way of infrastructure provisions or otherwise?
If you come to Abia State and sample the opinion of people they will tell you that they have not had it so good as they are witnessing now. There is no sector that is neglected and I stand to be challenged. Every sector is receiving priority attention. Abia is now a safe haven for investors as you can now sleep with your two eyes closed.
Of course everybody knew the history of the state in terms of insecurity, kidnapping, armed robbery, etc. It took the courage, wisdom, tenacity and strategy of Governor to stamp out these vices.
You don’t need to be told that there is political peace and harmony in Abia as all Abia political stakeholders are now speaking with one voice to ensure that the state takes its pride of place. The truth is that the governor has raised the leadership bar and his successor will have a great challenge to sustain it.
The governor met nothing on ground when he assumed office. He started from the scratch to build the state that we are all proud of today and Abia state is described as a construction site. It is now that he built a befitting state secretariat, it is now that he is building the government house, international conference centre, dialysis hospitals of best standards. At the last count, the committee headed by the Commissioner of Information, Dr Eze Chikamnayo took inventory of some of the projects and over 10,000 projects were identified and the governor has continued to commission projects as if he started yesterday.
There is no part of the state that you will not see newly constructed roads, schools, rural electrification. Our critics say nothing is happening in Aba but the Osisioma depot that was moribund for years has been revived and is on stream today. You cannot imagine the number of our youths that have been gainfully employed there.
Today we have accessible roads in Aba and the town has become one of the cleanest cities in Nigeria. In the area of health, we have the Abia state specialist and diagnostic center with all the state of the art equipment which is among the best in our clime. There is the Amachara specialist hospital where we also have a chest specialist centre, we have the 100-bed hospitals in all the zones within the state, we have over 200 health centres, well equipped scattered all over the state, this is apart from the health clinics in every community and villages
Ochendo has left landmarks that are visible and verifiable in all sectors. We are ready to challenge critics anywhere, on radio, on television through any debate to showcase what this government has done as well as projects waiting for commissioning in the areas of agriculture, tourism, youth and women empowerment, housing, etc.
As I speak almost 3000 buses and cars apart from tricycles have been distributed to our youths to empower them in transportation business not to talk of other direct employment initiatives. The governor is not alone in all this, his amiable wife has done so much for the women, building houses for some indigent ones but above all her centre where skills are acquired has received great commendation both nationally and internationally.

Politics / Charly Boy Confront Gov Rochas At Father’s Burial by emindu: 12:11pm On Jun 30, 2014
The funeral mass organised at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oguta, Imo State, for the late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa ended abruptly yesterday as his son, Charles Oputa a.k.a Charly Boy stopped Governor Rochas Okorocha from making a speech in the church.

Okorocha, who was equally angry that protocol was breached by President Goodluck Jonathan who was represented at the mass by the Secretary of the Government of Federation, Chief Anyim Pius Anyim by speaking before him, rose to make his speech but Charly Boy seized the microphone from the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Jude Ike, which created confusion in the church.

The officiating priest and Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. (Dr) Matthew Hassan Kukah had pleaded with Charly Boy to allow Okorocha speak, but he refused, saying he would not allow his father’s burial to be politicised.

An ostensibly angry Okorocha started fuming in the church, which made the Attorney General of Imo State, Chukwuma Umeh, to order the lawyers who gathered in the church to leave.

As the lawyers were leaving, the dignitaries who attended the mass began to leave in droves as Okorocha and his convoy drove away in anger before the body of Oputa was taken back to his country home for interment.

Governor Okorocha had voted N20 million for the burial of Oputa, but the state lost track of the burial arrangement as the Oputa family shot the door on the burial plan. Charly Boy was quoted to have warned the Imo State governor to stay away from his father’s burial, but no reason was given for his action.

The Abia State Governor, Chief Theodore Orji, during the eight Abuja housing show awards emerged as the Housing Governor of the Year.
Governor Orji while receiving the award at the Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja, dedicated it to the victims of the bomb blasts that rocked Emab Plaza in Wuse 2 which left over 20 people dead and many others injured.
The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Housing, Prince K.O.Mgbeahuru, at the well attended award ceremony organized by FESadeb Communications Limited, said the bomb blasts that killed innocent Nigerians who were mainly traders forced him to boycott the award ceremony at the last minute.
Governor Orji who expressed joy over the award bestowed on him, promised to complete the legacy projects started by his government. He also pledged not to relent in the delivery of democracy dividends to Abians.
The Programme Coordinator, Mr. Festus Adebayo, said the award to Abia State Governor Chief Theodore Orji, is in recognition of the governor’s laudable achievement in the housing sector.
According to him, the award is targeted at rewarding excellence in the housing and construction sectors of the economy.
Dignitaries from all walks of life including hundreds of Abians attended the ceremony while 16 other personalities and organizations also received awards at the event.

ABIA STATE SCORE CARD TWENTY TWO YEARS AFTER

After twenty two years of existence as a state, Abia has witnessed a speedy pace of infrastructural development under the able leadership of Chief Theodore Orji (Ochendo). Within this period of existence, Theodore Orji’s led administration is the only government that has been able to lay for the state a foundation for a modern state of this contemporary time.
We the concerned youths of Abia state have thoroughly assessed the performance of His Excellency Chief T A Orji, and we are proud to enumerate the following as laudable projects executed by the Executive Governor of Abia state Chief T. A Orji.

1) Construction of an international conference centre with Nine thousand seats capacity and state of the arts facilities, which will help boost the tourism sector of the state and which will
In turn provide employment opportunities for the teeming youths of the state.
2) Construction of a befitting workers secretariat at Umuahia with state of the arts facilities.
3) Construction of an ultra-modern office complex for Broadcasting Corporation of Abia State. (BCA).
4) Construction of a befitting Secretariat for Abia state Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA).
5) Construction of Ultra-Modern Government House and Governors Lodge.
6) Construction of office complex For Abia State Planning Commission.
7) Construction of a high brow Housing Estate Amaokwe.
cool Construction of a specialist/diagnostic hospital in Aba and Umuahia.
9) Construction of over 250 Health Centres spread across the state.
10) Construction of women development Skills Acquisition Centre.
11) Construction of various Road networks in the state Reconstruction of Aba Port Harcourt Road a Federal Government Road, Amaekpe –Okagwe Road Ohafia , Abia state , Nkata –Alike Umukabia Road, Ohuhu , Umucha access Road to CKC , Ejiama Migha Abia state Ovim- Acha Road Amaogwu, Umuekwule Road Abiruba- Nkporo Road.
12) Reconstruction of Danfodio Road Aba, and Ukwumango spot on faulks Road Aba Abia state.
13) Construction of Ubani modern market with access Road and over 7,500 Shops.
14) A proposed Airport of International Standard for the state and projects too numerous to mention.

Abia Concerned Youths Assembly has been waiting on the side-line for too long and now we have resolved to rise from the side-line to warn every baseless critic and paid agents whose ultimate aim is that of criticizing the government negatively, thereby distracting the attention of the government. It is glaring that the bulk of those negative critics are not resident in the state neither are they vested with how the state operates.

Abia Concerned Youths Assembly considers it important to bring to the notice of all that the pace of development in Abia state, under the leadership of Chief T. A. Orji is unprecedented inspite of the state’s lean resources accruable from the Federation Account and this simply concludes that the critics of this government are on the wrong part of assessment by comparing Abia with other oil producing states in the country.

It gives us concern as concerned youths of an Assembly why the critics of T. A. Orji’s administration are from a single stock, as if the state affairs is a one man orchestra. If the likes of General Ike Nwachukwu (RTD), Senator Adolphus Wabara, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, Onyema Ugochukwu, Chief Emeka Wogu and Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe etc. are supportive of T. A. Orji’s administration. We wonder where these crops of baseless critics and detractors derive their strength from.

Abia state long before now was known and rated as a den for kidnappers and armed robbers, but T. A. Orji’s government has stamped out this social malady through his youth empowerment scheme. It is a thing of pride to note that it was in the reign of Chief T. A. Orji that Abia state was able to produce the chief of Army staff in the person of General Azubuike Iherjirika which has gone a long way in addressing the problem of insecurity in the state.

We as concerned youths of Abia are blunt to express that if previous administrations had taken into cognizance the need for basic infrastructures, Chief T. A. Orji would have nothing to do than to continue form where they stopped rather the government is bearing the brunt of laying the foundation for a modern state of Abia. It is quite embarrassing to state that the previous governments in the state were running the affairs of the state in a rented government house until Chief T. A. Orji saw the need to construct a befitting Governors lodge/Government House for the state in which states like Jigawa state that was created the same time with Abia state had long been operating in owned Government house/lodge.

Interestingly the history of Abia state cannot be complete if Chief Theodore Orji is not mentioned due to his efforts in fast-tracking developments in the state. Critics should learn to be objective in their criticism rather than depend on unfounded and baseless rumours.

We as concerned youths of Abia state, under the aegis of Abia Concerned Youths Assembly have decided to support sustainable democracy and good governance under Chief T .A. Orji taking cognizance of the fact that Abia state has never had it so good. Chief T. A. Orji has touched every sector of the state in his developmental drive.
We have no hesitation or reservation to applaud the good legacies of Chief T .A. Orji as the Governor of Abia state.

Politics / Youth Empowerment Tool For Wealth Creation, Says Gov. Orji by emindu: 2:00pm On Oct 05, 2013
Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State has said that youth empowerment is a tool for wealth creation that leads to socio-economic advancement.

Orji made the disclosure on Friday at the graduation of 400 beneficiaries of Abia Skills Acqusition Subsidy Reinvestment Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) in Umuahia.

He said that youth empowerment programmes created an enabling environment for young people to contribute positively to the growth of the society.

``This programme has created an opportunity for young people to engage themselves in ventures that will make them become good representatives of their families.

``This has further reduced the number of unemployed youths in Abia by empowerment of 400 people, an indication that this skills acquisition programme is a success,’’ Orji said.

A SURE-P Consultant, Mrs Bisiola Nwakodo, said the beneficiaries were trained in catering, computer operation, fashion designing, hair dressing, fish/poultry farming and interior decoration.

Nwakodo said the beneficiaries were placed on a monthly stipend of N10, 000 and attached to establishments for internship during their trainings.

“I am confident that the beneficiaries through practising what they have learnt will bring economic growth to the state,” she said.

The wife of the governor, Mrs Odochi Orji, urged the beneficiaries to be good ambassadors of the youth empowerment initiative by practicing the skills they had acquired.

``Self-reliance is capable of helping one to genuinely serve others and develop one's talents,’’ she said.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Chinwendu Abazie, said that she would use the equipment to generate income for her family's upkeep, while Mr Ndukwe Kalu, said he would become self-reliant and an employer of labour.

Politics / Re: Abia Signs PPP Framework For N163 Billion Naira ($1b) Osisioma Industrial Park by emindu: 7:37am On Oct 03, 2013
There is a new picture of Aba, a mental prototype of what Aba should be, in the mind of Ochendo. Thank God, he is today in Aba with full force working towards the actualisation of the Aba of our dreams. The transformation is starting with the construction of 16 roads. The caterpillars are at work. Through Azikiwe, Asa road, Brass, etc, it is a new face for a once fallen city. By the time Ochendo is done, Aba residents will sing a new song. The critics will swallow their words. They will sing eulogies to a man whose entire trajectory in power has been a rescue mission for the people of God’s Own State.
Politics / Re: Abia Signs PPP Framework For N163 Billion Naira ($1b) Osisioma Industrial Park by emindu: 7:37am On Oct 03, 2013
Aba has been the centre of criticism against the Ochendo government. But the critics did not seem to understand the history of the cumulative decay of the city which started with the previous administrations of the state. They did not also factor the fact that Orji has only a paltry N3.5 billion monthly federal allocation to cater for the entire state. But today, Orji has marched into Aba to match action with words and his vision is to create an enabling environment for the reemergence of the small and medium scale enterprises and for the growth of the informal sector in Aba. He wants to restore the lost glory of Aba.
Indeed, Aba is rich in history. The city is key not only to the Igbos but to the entire people of Nigeria and Africa. Apart from its political history with the Aba Women Riot of 1929, there is a rare ingenuity and dexterity for creativity and innovation which germinate in Aba. In little corners of the ancient city, little men of giant minds replicate the kind of creative imagination for which the three Japanese cities of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka are known. Today, the new political will of Ochendo is to rebuild and transform the city, and the determination to re-invent the Japan of Africa.
Aba is also the commercial hub of Abia State and the business epicentre of the South-East. A greater percentage of the state’s internally-generated revenue (IGR) comes from Aba. It is a city of commerce and enterprise and a place where men sit back in their backyards and try to design, create or develop a product. By the time Aba was in its glory, it was a great centre of business. People came in hordes from all areas of the West African sub-region to buy the Aba-made goods. The city made a great contribution to the Nigerian economy, contributing both to the industrial growth and tourism.

Besides the people’s creativity, Aba also played host as zonal headquarters of many multi-nationals. During the civil war, the area sustained the secessionist Biafra in the area of local food production. But suddenly, Aba fell from the pinnacle of its glory to the backwaters. Without any measure of control, the once beautiful city built by the colonial government became a mad house. The situation was worsened by the menace of flood and filth. Makeshift kiosks sprung up everywhere and people built on top of drainages. Without an enabling environment, the small and medium scale enterprises began to die. The final death knell was the spate of insecurity witnessed in the area in recent times.
Aba also has a recent history of insecurity that came to its peak with the crime of kidnapping. Realising that law and order are the conditions for all other socio-economic activities of man, the governor waged a war against insecurity by confronting and combating the menace of kidnapping and other violent crimes that gripped the area. In collaboration with the Federal Government on a three-pronged strategy that involved the Army leading an expedition in Abia, Orji stabilised the state and ensured that peace returned to the once volatile areas. He has continued to sustain this atmosphere by retaining the services of the Army in the area.
With security in place, the governor has gone ahead to woo foreign investors to the state. All the companies that once relocated from the city have returned to Aba. The strategy is to revamp the industrial base that existed in the area. This would assist in creating job opportunities for the teeming youths and boost the governor’s youth empowerment programme.

It does not matter if the opponents and critics are making this point stoutly from partisan perspectives. To criticise the government is a not just a right but a duty of the opposition.T.A is firmly cultured with attentiveness that will ensure he never get distracted by the censure coming from all direction,as such is normal thing expected of people that are being governed....
Politics / Re: The Unethical Publication Of The Pilot Newspaper On Abia by emindu: 12:08pm On Oct 01, 2013
A system of leadership that does not strive for a balance on its success
and continuity is very fragile and defective, and will not maintain
stability of leadership because the process encourages abnormality
measures. I have seen that T.A has been with nerve-racking passion that
seizes him, and has got the gradation mentality, and this phenomenal
apathy which has projected his drive to a greater level of helping him
pull a huge initiative. In aphorism, people generally are quick-witted
to dish out apocryphal connotation towards his administration but am
happy he has tried to silence them all, imagine Abia state has now stood
ahead of other South East states in road maintenance, this showed
commitment to development...i appreciate T.A 's effort to state
building..

Governor T. A. Orji is presently building a new Abia State for the good of all. Though he was confronted at the inception by a monstrous breakdown in the machinery of governance, brea kdown of all traditional values of hard work, integrity, honesty, communal and self help spirit, discipli ne, transparency and accountability in conducting community and government business etc. He has been able to arrest these ugly situations.
Today weak infrastructure, decline in quality of education and a legacy of impunity are things of the past and no more in the character or identified with the people and government of Abia state.
“A modern, prosperous and secure state built on the energy, drive and enterprise of its people”.
This new vision was all that was required to under pin an agenda for creating shared prosperity through the development of desirable infrastructure, industry, agriculture and mutually beneficial linkages.
Tremendous achievements have been recordedunder

The Gov has done pretty well in the area of security, Energy distribution, primary and tertiary healthcare, development of human capital through various youth empowerment Programmes, infrastructural development...New essential structures like the workers secretariat, International Conference centre, remodeling of Abia hotels to boost the hospitality and tourism industry, the new high court buildings Umuahia and Aba...the more decent court houses the more judges the more jobs, the new Abia State library headquarters to boost learning and research, the Abia State Specialist and Diagnostic Hospital commended as the best in the entire south east and south south region, the new eye and dialysis centre in Umuahia, the new industrial market Umuahia and Umuahia Modern market to boost commerce and industry also to decongest the Umuahia city centre, the new motor Spare Parts and Mechanic Village at Ohiya Umuahia to create sanity and enhance environmental decency in Umuahia city centre, the new govt house Govt house currently situated in a private and rented property. A functioning skill acquisition centre training about 5000 youths currently. A new broadcasting House (BCA) building, a new JAAC, ASUBEB and Chieftancy affairs complex in Umuahia, A newly built ministry of Justice building in Umuahia, about 250 primary health care centres across the state, partnering with World bank to build Community Social Development program projects as demanded by communities in Abia State, A new House of Assembly Administrative and constituency complex within the HOA premises. A new ASEPA building, ASEPA is currently occupying a rented building, built &commissioned the Amaokwe housing Estate in Umuahia, Isieke, Amaudo and Aso small and medium income housing estates are currently ongoing in Umuahia, massive investment in the environmental sector...Opening up drains in Aba & Umuahia, provision of refuse dump equipment & Trucks etc. The govt has built numerous rural and urban roads in Isukwuato, Ohafia, Bende Umunneochi, Umuahia, Ikwu ano, Isi ala Ngwa etc including the 17 major Aba city roads recently embarked upon...Brass, Milverton, Ngwa Road, Faulks Road, Geometric, Ama Ogbonna, etc. All these are verifiable in addition to massive investment on security of lives and property. ABSG invested over 1.5 billion to evacuate power (electricity) from the Ohiya sub power station after the federal govt built but abandoned it. Power supply has improved in Umuahia and environs leading to massive boost in the small and medium scale enterprises sector. Umuahia, the capital city doesn't get dark at night as a result of the massive investment on street light project. Remember security globally requires huge investment and for Abia State to be known currently as a safe zone, massive investment is being invested to sustain the achievement made so far on security. All these and many more doesn't stop Abia State from having her challenges as a State but the good news is that those developmental challenges are being tackled with the funds available to the State without borrowing.
