Hdpe pipes are best for irrigation farming.
PVC pipes are simply not cost effective at all. Better use Hdpe pipes which come in 100 meters roll. PVC comes in 6 meters, very tedious & time consuming connecting them especially on a big farm.
Hdpe pipes are actually cheaper than PVC. A big misconception out there is that they are costly. Their fittings are slightly expensive but this evens out if you factor in the cost of connecting 6m PVC pipes with glue to lay in the farm.
HDPE is more durable than PVC and even more hardy.
HDPE is super quick and easy to install. PVC is NOT!

Cocoboms: My friend bought her cuke seed from Johnny seeds. They are expensive. Parthenocarpic cuke seeds are usually expensive. But their yield more than makes up for d cost of buying them. The one I bought in Nigeria last 2 years has been discontinued. But East west seeds has a parthenocarpic beit alpha variety in Nigeria called Basimah f1. Very very expensive 1000 seeds cost about 35k. Crazy! It's now about 190,000 for 1000 seeds |

omoniyisam: give us update on the 950 cucumber stand... i harvested mine two days ago... got one bag I will when I receive pictures and data. The farmer in Ogun State is an unfortunate one. He is trying to be funny by hiding the statistics of the farm. I now know why some farmers will never succeed. I am done with that farm and in short small farms currently. I will update on another two farms, one 2850 population at Ibadan (day 30) and the other 1850 at Awka (day 37) |

But you need to up your spray program because they both belong to same family cucurbits and can share some pests especially aphids between each other. |

jidestroud: That Soko ehn !! all of a sudden, it just keeps becoming more and more difficult for me to nurse on my farm . It dies off just barely a week after sprouting.
Any suggestions? @emmaachile2 Could be fungal or nematode attack. Check the roots first and if it's ball like roots, it could be nematicide related. Soko is also weak against fungal pathogens also. Feed it well like with an npk 15-15-15 to withstand those pathogens and also look for neem oil to use it on from the nursery. |

jidestroud: Soko or Tete?
I am yet to understand why the Yorubas prefer the Efo Soko to Efe Tete. For me, vegetable is vegetables. I couldn't even tell the difference of any vegetable eaten , well, except for bitterleaf . For those who intend farming vegetables where the Yorubas are highly populated, abeg do Efo Soko (Lagos Spinach). Soko is far better in terms of soup thickness and also quality. It doesn't loose volume and resembles more of ugu leaves than Efo tete. I remove all efo tete from the farm and replace with Efo soko. |
