Politics / How Mbazulike Amaechi Hid Mandela From Apartheid Regime In Nigeria by emmaliveth10(m): 6:31am On Dec 07, 2013 |
ONE of the few surviving nationalists and former Minister of Aviation in the first republic, Chief Mbazulike Amaechi has revealed how he hid the foremost South African nationalist and former president of South Africa, Chief Nelson Mandela for six months in Nigeria to evade his arrest by officials of the apartheid regime in that country. Amaechi, who spoke with Vanguard at his Ukpor country home in Nnewi South local government area of Anambra State said people like Mandela are great assets to humanity and should not be going through the pains of life. Amaechi The former minister, popularly known as ‘the boy is good’, said it was a privilege to him being asked to live with Mandela when he ran away from the apartheid regime and came to Nigeria in 1963, adding that they shared great moments during the six months plus Mandela lived in his house. According to Amaechi, even when Mandela returned to South Africa and was sentenced to life imprisonment, he still wrote him letters from prison, showing how appreciative he is. The interview with Amaechi on Mandela went thus: PRESENTLY, the foremost South African nationalist, Nelson Mandela, is sick and in the hospital. We want to know if you had any relationship with him in the past or an encounter? Yes, he was the leader of the Africa National Congress, ANC. He led the group that struggled for democracy in South Africa. That was the time of the apartheid regime in South Africa and when the British government was desperately looking for him to imprison him; he ran away from South Africa and took refuge in Nigeria. That was when the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe was the President of Nigeria and late Dr. Michael Okpara the Premier of the Eastern Region. When Mandela came to Nigeria, Zik as the leader of the nationalist group in Nigeria in consultation with Okpara decided that they should find a nationalist of Mandela’s caliber who would accommodate him. So they called on me to take Mandela and accommodate him. At that time, I was the parliamentary secretary and also a member of the parliament before I became a minister. He moved in to my house and stayed for about six or more months with me and my wife. I was then newly married while he was in his early 40’s or so. We used to go out together and both the British intelligence and the South African intelligence services knew that he was with me, but there was nothing they could do about it because I was in government. Then, after sometime, during our discussions, he said: “My stay here, how long will it last? “I think I better return to South Africa. They will either kill me or send me to prison and it will spur the other nationalists remaining to continue with the struggle. So, after about six or seven months in my house, he decided to move back to South Africa. When he went back, he was promptly arrested, charged and sentenced to life imprisonment. He went to prison, but the nationalism in him did not depart from him. He continued doing his best for some of his colleagues. He wrote me a letter from prison asking me to find employment for one Dr. Barange. Barange’s father was a lawyer who defended the nationalists in a previous case, while Barange himself was a geologist. The apartheid people in South Africa were seriously looking for him and so Mandela wanted him to get out of South Africa. I was able to get a job for Dr. Barange at the University of Ife as a senior lecturer in Geology. Mandella wrote me from prison. In fact when you called that you were coming, I went to my office to search for this letter. This is the letter he wrote me from the prison on the 18th of February, 1964, he signed the letter as Nelson Mandela, prisoner No 116570/63. Then during his 74th birthday, he was still in prison, I joined his family to send him goodwill messages. When he came out from prison, I wrote him too. When he came to Nigeria after his release, he specifically requested to see me and Dr. Azikiwe. So, when he came to Enugu, the then governor, Col. Robert Akonobi, because we were in military rule then, wrote me to say Mandela wanted to see me. I honoured the invitation and I went to Enugu with my wife to see him. He was in the company of his former wife, Winnie. We shared some time together before he went back to South Africa. After that visit in 1993, have you been communicating with him? Yes, my last letter to him was on 18th November, 1993. Since the last letter, have two of you been communicating? No. We have not spoken to each other again. When he was appointed the President of South Africa, I was invited to his inauguration ceremony, but the military here did not allow me to go. They said I needed clearance to go and I did not get it.

I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one's head pointed toward the sun, one's feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death. #RIPNELSONMANDELA |

Nairaland / General / SHOCKING: The Flying ‘wizard’ Who Crash-landed At Kasoa. by emmaliveth10(m): 3:38pm On Nov 30, 2013 |
A man believed to be in his 70s, who claimed to.be a wizard, was on Wednesday found on the banks of the Okrudu River at Kaimebre, a settlement near the Kasoa New Market in the Central Region Ghana. The man, who gave his name as Charles Atta, looked frail, pale and bore protruding breasts like that of a teenage girl. His body was smeared with mud from the bank of the river where he was found by two brothers, Liberty Obeng and Innocent Obeng, who claimed they found the strange man crying for help. The two brothers told Daily Guide reporters that the self-acclaimed wizard confessed to them that he was in the company of colleagues, including a medical doctor and were flying to Cape Coast for a meeting when he was forced down. According to him, they were flying over a church where an all-night vigil was being held when he crash- landed at Servant Kings International School. "When we as ked him where he was coming from, Atta told us that he was from Akuapem Akropong but was flying to Cape Coast to attend a meeting for witches and wizards," he said. Charles also confessed that the two puffy protrusions on his chest were breasts taken from his 16-year- old granddaughter and that he normally borrowed them for his night activities. The two brothers said they were initially confused and bewildered by the weird sight of the man, and not knowing what to do him took him to Pink FM, a local radio station at Kasoa for help. When the strange announcement was made on radio, hundreds of people besieged the premises of the radio station to see the suspected wizard. Upon hearing the news, the Kasoa District Police dispatched a number of police personnel to the station to save the victim from being lynched. Superintendent Samuel Tabril Punobyin told the paper that the police did not investigate spiritual matters and that the suspected wiz-ard could therefore not be charged. He said the police would look for the family erf the man and hand him over to them. Charles Atta is still in the custody .of the Kasoa Police.

Politics / Anambra Supplementary Polls: Obiano Waits For ‘coronation’ by emmaliveth10(m): 7:40am On Nov 30, 2013 |
PDP moves to widen lead against APC SEEING Chief Willie Obiano, the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in the November 16, 2013 governorship election on Sunday, November 17, 2013 when Professor James Epoke, the state returning officer in the election declared the election inconclusive, and last Wednesday when he joined some South-East and South-South governors in a group photograph after their meeting in Awka, it was obvious that he is already looking beyond today's supplementary polls. Having garnered 25 per cent of votes in 18 of the state’s 21 local government areas and having for now, the highest number of votes, Obiano is waiting for Sunday to be declared winner. After addressing reporters at the Governor’s Lodge in Awka, Governor Peter Obi beckoned Obiano, who was among the crowd, to come and the governor introduced him to the visiting governors as the man who would soon join them. One after the other, the governors – Liyel Imoke of Cross River, Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta, Godswil Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, Theodore Orji of Abia, Sullivan Chime of Enugu and Governor Martin Elechi of Ebonyi who was represented by his deputy, Mr. Dave Umahi – took a close look at Obiano and were perhaps weighing how he would fit into the murky waters of Nigeria’s politics, if he eventually wins. Going by the voting pattern in the already concluded elections, it would be very difficult for any party to surpass the number of votes he has secured. About 113113 votes would be in contention tomorrow in about 211 polling units. For the PDP or APC to surpass him, one of them has to secure at least 85,000 votes with APGA scoring no vote. Three parties, APC, LP and the campaign organization of the PDP candidate, Comrade Tony Nwoye, have said they would not participate in the supplementary election, but the PDP leadership is insisting that it would participate in the supplementary election. Already, the disagreement among PDP members has led to the suspension of the director general of Tony Nwoye Campaign Organization, Prince Okey Ezenwa. Anambra State chairman of PDP, Prince Kenneth Emeakayi, at the party’s state secretariat, announced the suspension of Prince Ezenwa and his director of publicity, Mr. Ken Arinze from the party over their alleged comments on the Anambra governorship election. Emeakayi said their suspension was in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution, Chapter 10 Section 57 (3). He said: “Following developments in our party regarding the unauthorized publications in the media credited to some members of our party over the supplementary governorship election scheduled for November 30, 2013, the State Working Committee of PDP, at a meeting, reviewed the whole situation and resolved to suspend Prince Victor Okey Ezenwa and Honourable Ken Arinze from PDP for anti-party activities. Both breached the provisions of the party’s constitution. The relevant chapter provides that a member could be suspended for a period not more than one month, after which it could be reviewed.” Emeakayi said the two suspended members have been referred to the PDP disciplinary committee for appropriate action, adding that most members of PDP have condemned the action of some members who have been insulting the national publicity secretary of PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh for expressing the position of the party’s leadership on the Anambra election. The chairman said Metuh has been doing his job well and should be commended. However, what appears to be baffling PDP members was when Emeakayi said he has been in touch with the party’s candidate in the Anambra election, Prince Tony Nwoye, adding that “Nwoye and PDP have agreed to participate in the supplementary election on Saturday because they were deceived by one of the opposition during the rerun of the election in Obosi in Idemili North where, he said, the APC earlier said it would not participate only for the party to send agents and ensured that the party was voted for. He said the votes in Obosi helped APC to narrow the gap between PDP and APC and insisted that PDP would not allow that to happen again on Saturday because the party would want to maintain it second position. According to Emeakayi, “what it means is that the campaign team and the candidate are not on the same page on the issue of the supplementary election and we regret that the campaign team has been deceiving the public and bringing PDP into public ridicule. I want to state that the best way to ensure unity in PDP is to maintain discipline and the leadership of the party would never relent in striving to achieve that.” But while APGA is hoping to coast to victory tomorrow, the court action instituted by Mrs. Uche Ekwunife, one of the party’s governorship aspirants praying that Obiano be disqualified based on alleged double voters’ registration, is causing disquiet in the state. Ekwunife has already filed the court processes at the Federal High Court, Awka. The federal lawmaker was said to have said that her action was to ensure that APGA did not lose out in the event of Obiano losing the position. But the National Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh, told Vanguard that what Ekwunife did was unacceptable to the party and wondered what she stood to gain knowing very well that her action was an exercise in futility because Obiano never committed the said offence. Umeh said: “Ekwunife wanted to be governor and she did not get it. She wanted to be deputy governor and did not get it for obvious reasons. That is not the reason she should be desperate and there is no basis for her action. “She is bringing her political career into disrepute. This is somebody who contested against Governor Obi in 2010. After that, she came into APGA and we accepted her and gave her ticket for House of Representatives. She has indeed embarrassed the party. She is a lady after my heart, but on this issue, she is on her own.” With many governorship candidates saying they would participate in the supplementary election, it is to be seen if APC will eventually direct its supporters to participate in the exercise. The ADC candidate, Chief Anayo Arinze said his colleagues have agreed to participate, saying: “I wish to appreciate and commend the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on its decision to conduct a supplementary election in some 201 polling units in Anambra state on Saturday 30th November, 2013 to make-up the perceived deficiencies in the November 2013 governorship election in the state. “Given INEC’s declaration of the November 16, 2013 governorship election in the state as inconclusive, we in ADC believe that only a supplementary election will afford the disenfranchised voters another opportunity to exercise their civic responsibilities. I humbly appeal to all disenfranchised registered voters in the affected polling units and local government areas to ignore any negative call and come out en masse and participate in the electoral process that will produce the next governor of Anambra State. “Anambrarians should stand by INEC to successfully complete the electoral process and announce the eventual winner of the election. Voters in Anambra state and INEC should disregard any call for outright cancellation of the entire election because it is the handiwork of forces from outside Anambra State, who want to set our state ablaze while developing theirs. “I plead with my co-contestants who are aggrieved over some irregularities perceived at the election to sheath their swords and resist being pulled by external forces to destroy our state. It is true that there were some irregularities which have been acknowledged by INEC but that cannot vitiate the fact that the November 16, 2013 governorship election was the freest, fairest and most peaceful election ever conducted in the history of Anambra state. It is therefore, against natural justice, equity and fairness if INEC is forced to cancel the entire election because of the little challenges it encountered in about 201 polling units out of over 5000 polling units. “The call for outright cancellation of Anambra state governorship election is evil, mischievous and unpatriotic and should be ignored by all well-meaning citizens. “Let me use this opportunity to call on my fellow party flag-bearers in Anambra governorship election to continue to participate robustly in the electoral process to enable a clear winner emerge. After all, of the 23 of us, only one person can be governor and that person must be an Anambrarian. We must all come together to move our state forward.” www.vanguardngr.com/2013/11/anambra-supplementary-polls-obiano-waits-coronation/

Politics / ASUU Dares FG Over Sack by emmaliveth10(m): 7:31am On Nov 30, 2013 |
Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities [ASUU], Calabar Zone, has reacted angrily to the order to return to the classrooms issued to them by the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, saying that the action would worsen the strike action rather than solving the problem. ASUU accused the minister of deceiving President Jonathan on the crisis, alleging that Wike and some other unnamed officials of the Government did not want the lingering problem between the union and the Federal Government to be resolved. According to the zonal coordinator of ASUU Calabar zone, Dr. Charles Ononuju, with such threat the crisis would linger far longer than expected. In a statement in Umuahia,. Ononuju said that the union received with shock the pronouncement by the supervising minister, saying the crisis could not be resolved that way. “We received with shock the pronouncement of by the Supervising Minister of Education, Wike, that lecturers should resume work or be sacked”, Ononuju said. He said that the union had gone far with discussion on how to resolve the crisis and was waiting for President Goodluck Jonathan’s reply to their letter after their meeting when the minister came up with the “unfortunate” pronouncement. “Sacking lecturers will not solve the problem but will compound it. Wike should resign and come to the university and teach. This is not the way to go if they go this way, the crisis will not be resolved in the next 100 years”, he warned. Politics / Tight Security As Anambra Supplementary Election Holds Saturday by emmaliveth10(m): 8:35pm On Nov 29, 2013 |
Heavy security has been mounted in areas where the governorship supplementary election will take place on Saturday in Anambra State. A visit to the affected wards in Idemili North and Onitsha South Local Government Areas of the state on Friday showed heavy presence of policemen, who mounted checkpoints with patrol vehicles and Armoured Personnel Carriers. The security beef-up came as more than 1,000 women occupied the road to the INEC headquarters, Awka, on Friday to protest against the holding of the supplementary election. The women were, however, stopped from proceeding to the gate of INEC by heavily-armed policemen, who came in six trucks. But they stayed over at Arroma Junction, where they sang and called for the removal of INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, and the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Chukwuemeka Onukaogu. Meanwhile, the police in Anambra State and the Independent National Electoral Commission have announced an 18-hour restriction on human and vehicular movements in two local government areas in Anambra State because of the Saturday poll. In separate statements on Friday, the REC in the state, Prof. Chukwuemeka Onukaogu, and the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka, named the local governments as Idemili North and Onitsha South. source - www.punchng.com/news/tight-security-as-anambra-supplementary-election-holds-saturday/ |

Education / ASUU Strike: Ekiti Students Seek Divine Intervention, by emmaliveth10(m): 7:52am On Nov 29, 2013 |
ADO EKITI — Students of Ekiti State origin in tertiary institutions embarked on marathon prayers to seek divine intervention in the five- month old strike by the members of the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities, ASUU. The students, who were drawn from the various institutions of higher learning converged at Lady Jibowu Hall, Ekiti Government House where they held the prayer session The session had in attendance, the state’s Deputy Governor, Professor Modupe Adelabu and some clerics. Adelabu in her remarks cautioned the students against taking to the streets and engaging in illegal acts that could lead to violence and disruption of peace in the state. She noted that they did the right thing by taking their petition to God. She said it was unfortunate that both parties to the dispute – ASUU and the Federal Government – had remained adamant despite interventions from well-meaning Nigerians. The number two citizen of the state urged the students not to relent in their regular prayer for divine intervention, saying that the death of Prof Festus Iyayi, a frontline ASUU member in an auto-crash along the Abuja-Lokoja Road introduced another twist to the lingering dispute. Mrs Adelabu, who expressed the hope that the prayers of the students would yield the desired result in a matter of days, counseled the undergraduates against engaging in activities that could jeopardize their future. Mrs Adelabu regretted that the situation which keeps them at home in the past few months was not their own making and that their teachers did not deliberately embark on the strike to put the students’ future at stake. According to her, the lecturers were only pressing for their rights and other logistics that will improve the facilities in the nation’s citadel of leaning and to make them world standard. Advising the students to engage themselves in profitable ventures, she also urged them not to completely abandon their studies but constantly review their lecture notes in preparation for the re-opening of the varsities. Pastor John Aladete in his sermon at the prayer session urged the students not to be daunted by their present predicament as a result of the protracted ASUU strike. The cleric charged them to be hopeful with an assurance that God will be with them irrespective of the present development. He said God has designed their generation to bring the desired change needed by the country. The students were later led into series of prayer sessions by some clerics including the Government House Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Anthony Famuagun, Pastor Tunde Akinola of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youths, Pastor Mike Awopetu and Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Mr Adeoye Aribasoye. |
Education / Boko Haram: Kogi State Varsity, ASUU Disown Arrested Lecturer by emmaliveth10(m): 10:24pm On Nov 28, 2013 |
Following the arrest of Dr. Mohammed Nazeef Yusuf, a lecturer at Kogi State University, Ayingba by the Department of State Service, DSS over alleged involvement with the Boko Haram sect, the university authority has dissociated the institution from the activities of the lecturer and the alleged plan to carry out terrorists attacks in the state. Also, the Kogi State University Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities declared that the suspect was never an active member of the union. ASUU Chairman in the university, Dr. Sylvester Ukwuteno said contrary to report from the other suspects that Dr Yusuf was a strong member of the organization, the suspect has never been an active member of ASUU. According to him, “the only link between him (Dr. Nazeef Yusuf) and the association was because ASUU’s due is deducted at source from lecturers’ salaries. And he, like everyone else has his dues deducted to make him an automatic member. But he’s not a strong member as it has been widely claimed. I cannot remember the last time he attended any of our meetings”. Also, the institution in a statement signed by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Hassan Isah admitted that though the suspect, Dr. Mohammed Nazeef Yusuf who was recently paraded by Security agent is a lecturer in the institution the governing council and the management of the school do not know anything about him beyond his duty as a lecturer “The Governing council and the management therefore condemned and dissociated themselves from all criminality and terrorism in whatever shape or form, where ever and whenever it exist.” The VC noted that it became imperative to respond to the situation as the alleged involvement of the lecturer has elicited a lot of enquiries from friends, well- wishers, students, stakeholders and sister institutions. “In view of the negative interpretation and implication for our hard-earned reputation, and the damaging impression on unsuspected members of the public, the institution dissociates itself from all criminal and criminal activities including those of the dreaded Boko Haram sect.” He assured that security has been beefed up in the school with enough surveillance to curtail any attack from gunmen “In the meantime, the governing council and management of the institution have strengthened security and increase surveillance on campus with the view to stamp out all criminals and criminalities, including Boko Haram activities. We wish to assure the general public, particularly all our students, their parents and guardians, that the campus is safe and there is no threat whatsoever to human lives and property. “Members of the university community are advised to go about their normal life as the university has adequate security measures to deal with all criminals and criminal activities on campus whenever and where ever they are detected”, he said.

Education / ASUU Responds To Ultimatum by emmaliveth10(m): 8:33pm On Nov 28, 2013 |
"Federal Government Is Just Giving Empty Threats" - ASUU Responds To Ultimatum. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Thursday described the threat by the federal government to sack lecturers if they don't return to classroom as empty threat that could not hold water. The union said it is vindicated that the Federal government was not ready to implement resolutions reached with the union. ASUU said the threat will fail, adding that Nigerian public universities need 60,000 lecturers due to government's failure to employ more capable hands into the system. The union said federal government is wasting the time of Nigerians youths by failing to perfect the resolutions and get the strike suspended. The union added it had reasons to be wary following the failure of government to honour their promises to Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, resident doctors and other health workers who have suspended their strikes. The ASUU National Treasurer, Dr. Ademola Aremu, while responding to the government's directive, said the threat does not hold water as it has confirmed the fears that the federal government cannot be trusted. The don said, "With the latest action, the federal government has shown that they are not committed to all they have been saying. We are saying that since we agreed at the meeting that the sum of 200 billion naira is for 2012 and 2013 revitalisation, the federal government should deposit same in the Central Bank of Nigerian. We are already in November and December is around the corner. If they don't do that now, when do they want to do it? We are saying the non-victimization clause should be included as agreed while the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement should be included as agreed with the presidents". "It is a pity if the federal government is not willing to perfect the resolutions reached with union. This is why we find it difficult to trust our leaders by their words. How can someone be threatening to sack lecturers when universities are already short-staffed by almost 60,000. We are not in military era. The military tried it and failed. This one will fail again. They can re-open the school. ASUU did not shut down the universities. It was the management of the schools that ordered the students to go back home." 1 Like |

Politics / APGA Billboard Causes Accreditation Delay At Polling Unit At Aguleri by emmaliveth10(m): 3:58pm On Nov 16, 2013 |
Anambra – Accreditation of voters was delayed in Aguleri on Saturday as INEC officials insited that a billboard of one of the parties in the Anambra governorship election be pulled down. The billboard of the APGA governorship candidate, Mr Willy Obiano, and his running mate, Dr Okeke Chukwukaodinaka, was mounted metres away from the polling unit near the Aguleri roundabout, contrary to electoral laws. INEC regulations do not allow for campaigns or posters of candidates near election grounds 24 hours to the election. INEC adhoc officials who arrived at the polling unit before 8 a.m. for accreditation of voters, insisted that the billboard be dismantled before anything could be done. Similarly, some members of the electorate at the unit protested the presence of the billboard and insisted that it must be brought down. The presiding officer for Unit 004 said that there was no way she could allow the accreditation with the billboard just a few metres from the unit. “This billboard is so conspicous that it is against our mandate as electoral officers. I can only continue with this election when the billboard is dismantled,” she said. She confirmed that those on ground for the accreditation had appealed to her to move the polling unit to a nearby space that would not show the billboard but she had declined. “My reasons are simply because this polling unit is where we registered the voters and I cannot move to another point without superior directive. “I have spoken to my supervisory presiding officer who said I should remain at my assigned unit,” she said. The APGA agent for the unit, Mr Peter Nneli, explianed that the billboard was erected long before the election. “This billboard is not for the purpose of campaign and cannot be easily dismantled,” Nneli said. Accreditation eventually kicked off in the unit at 10.25 a.m, more than two hours behind shedule after the billborad was dismantled by youths from the town.
