Health / Another Deadly Virus Surfaces- Marburg Haemorrhagic Fever (MHF) by emmaliveth10(m): 6:18pm On Oct 11, 2014
With West Africa, and indeed the rest of the world, still reeling from the deaths brought about by the Ebola virus, the recent death of a Ugandan hospital technician of another deadly viral disease, Marburg Haemorrhagic Fever (MHF), has brought fresh fears, Tribune Newspaperreports.
Uganda’s Ministry of Health disclosed that a total of 99 people who had been in contact with the victim had been moved to quarantine. These contacts are being monitored for signs and symptoms of the disease after tests confirmed that the 30-year-old man who worked as a radiographer in a Kampala hospital died of the disease. The man was said to have had a headache, abdominal pains, diarrhoea and vomited blood before he died.
Marburg virus was first identified in 1967, after simultaneous outbreaks in Marburg (from which the disease takes its name) and Frankfurt both in Germany, Belgrade, Serbia and Yugoslavia. It was later traced back to monkeys imported from Uganda for laboratory work. Since then, the virus has appeared sporadically, with just a dozen outbreaks on record. The most recent outbreak, also in Uganda, in 2012, killed four out of 15 patients, according to the United States of America’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Politics / Chibok Girls: Parents Want Case Closed, Say Funeral Rites Already Performed by emmaliveth10(m): 6:42am On Aug 23, 2014
MORE than four months after unfruitful search for their abducted girls, parents of the kidnapped Chibok school girls said they want the matter closed.
Since the girls have been missing for more than four months, the parents said they presumed the students to have died for which their funeral rites have already been performed in their (parents’) minds according to their custom.

They, however, urged the federal government bring the girls’ corpses for honourable burial.
This position was disclosed yesterday by the #BringOurGirls advocacy group, during its daily sit-out meeting for the rescue of the missing school girls at Unity Fountain, Abuja.
“All they said they want is their corpses to bury them honourably,” the group said.
As a way of driving their demand home, the group said it is vigorously mobilizing people on and offline and via social media towards holding a mega protest march in the FCT.
According to them, over 200 groups in Abuja have so far been contacted and have given positive response to participate, with 135 individuals on the group’s database contacted.
While calling on federal government to double its effort to free the girls, the meeting said only political and military action can rescue our girls, and that is why we do what we are doing to compel that.
The group added a new slogan #NotWithoutOurDaughters! in response to a question on when it will stop the campaign.

Politics / Ekiti Guber Poll: Only Court Can Disqualify Me – Fayose by emmaliveth10(m): 2:15am On Jul 15, 2014
ADO EKITI—Ekiti State governor-elect, Mr Ayo Fayose yesterday said only court could declare him unfit to stand for election and not an individual, groups or political parties, saying he was not rattled with the case instituted against him by All Progressives Congress, APC.
In apparent response to the petition filed against his victory by the APC, Fayose said it was abnormal for an individual or group to adjudge him guilty of an offence preferred against him without court pronouncement.
Fayose, who spoke in Ado Ekiti through his media aide, Mr Idowu Adelusi, said he was not bothered by the decision of APC to challenge his election at the tribunal.
The governor-elect said he was taken aback to learn that the APC had decided to contest the outcome of election which was adjudged to be freest and fairest by all Nigerians, boasting that he would defeat Fayemi 50 times, if there was a repeat election.
He said he was happy that the state APC Chairman, Chief Jide Awe told Journalists while submitting the party’s petition to the tribunal on Saturday that his party was embarrassed over the outcome of the poll.
According to him, “the party would be more embarrassed if there is a re-run.”
On allegation that he was facing criminal charges, impeachment as well as EFCC cases at the time of the election, Fayose said the APC Chairman and his cohorts should be the ones who should be bothered with recent murder cases allegedly hanging on their necks.
“They were recently released on bail over two or more murder cases perpetrated before the election period. Why are they not facing reality but choose to focus attention on Fayose’s matter?” he asked.
Also, the Prince Adedayo Adeyeye Movement, PAAM, described the petition by APC, challenging the June 21, 2014 Ekiti State governorship election as a waste of time and further demonstration of the party’s selfishness, arrogance and hatred for democratic process.
In a statement yesterday by its Director General, Bisi Kolawole, the group claimed APC was only advertising its ignorance by challenging the results of an election in which its candidate could not win his own local council.
It described as laughable, claim of “manipulation, undue militarisation, impeachment as well as EFCC’s cases hanging on the governor-elect, Dr Ayodele Fayose,” adding that; “Only a party comprising of people interested in dancing naked in the market place would make provision of adequate security for an election a tribunal issue. While we recognise the inalienable rights of all Nigerians to approach the courts for redress on any issue, we must say that going to court to challenge an election in which Dr Kayode Fayemi, a sitting governor lost even in his local government is a waste of time.”

Politics / Why We’re Opposed To State For S-east —northern Delegates by emmaliveth10(m): 1:01am On Jul 01, 2014
ABUJA — The Northern delegates to the ongoing National Conference have given reasons why they are opposed to the creation of an additional state for the South East.
Spokesman of the delegates, Mr Anthony Sani, who made this known, said “the issue of an additional state for South-East purely on the basis of equality ignores the fact that equality is not one and the same thing with equity.’’
Quoting Aristotle, Sani said: “Injustice is not only when equals are treated unequally but also when unequals are treated equally.”
In a statement yesterday, he further said: “States are created to take care of human beings. And when it comes to population and land mass, it is morally preposterous to regard South-East and North-West as equals. People forget the fact that former Eastern Nigeria is today nine states while former Western region is today eight states.
’’The North with more population than the South is just 19 states. People should not redefine the truth and justice. So if states are to be created, it should not be on the basis of equality alone but all other factors must be considered.”
Delegates at the on-going national conference
On derivation
On derivation, he said: “While not opposed to derivation principles in order to compensate for degradation of environment and reward for efforts, derivation should not make some parts of the country live on cutting edge while some others live on the knife edge of survival.
“We must take the concept of nationhood into account in our agitations for what we consider due and payable to us. This is because we cannot afford to live as if we are in different continents instead of in one country. Bridging the gab in incomes to reduce inequality is not just good politics but good economics as well”
On single tenure for president, govs
Sani further opposed single tenure for president and governors, saying that it would remove the motivation and incentives for working hard.
He said: “If all good and feckless leaders are corralled into the same group without any reward for performing ones, the only incentives left would be pillage of commonwealth by leaders. That is why most nations practise multiple tenure so that performing president and governors would be rewarded with re-election.
’’And if the clamour is to remove abuse of power of incumbency, it is to be noted that many countries device their own means on how to reduce the tendency to abuse power of incumbency.”
For example Chile allows multiple tenure that are not consecutive by preventing a president to conduct an election in which he is a candidate. And that was why President Michell of Chile could not contest as an incumbent despite her immense popularity, and came back to contest when she was not the president. She won.’’

Politics / Edun Olabanji Emerges Lagos One-day Governor by emmaliveth10(m): 12:46am On Jul 01, 2014
LAGOS— A 15-year-old Master Edun Olabanji of Army Children’s Senior Secondary School, Onigbongbo, yesterday, assumed office as Lagos State “One-Day Governor” at Alausa, Ikeja.
Meantime, Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, reiterated his administration’s commitment to continue to give priority attention to the education sector, saying students from the state public schools are now academic champions winning national competition awards.
Fashola said this when he received Olabanji, accompanied by his parents, who came first in the competition, initiated in 2001 by New Era Foundation under the leadership of Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
Fashola vacated his seat for the young Olabanji, whose father is a carpenter and mother, a refuse truck driver with Lagos Waste Management Agency (LAWMA), to preside over Lagos State Executive Council meeting at the Exco Chamber with his Deputy Opeyemi Blessing of Keme Balogun College at Igbogbo, Ikorodu and Macaulay Elijah Ayodele of Ojota Senior Secondary School.
He said the traditional thing prevalent in the country with a change of government would have been to quickly do away with the idea, saying he retained the One‑Day Governor initiative of his predecessor because of its positive impacts in the lives of the students who participate in the competitions.
According to him, “the seed that has been sown will germinate in ways we cannot contemplate, seeds of career choice decisions whether to serve in public sector or private sector.
“One thing that we need to point out is that the state’s public education system is producing excellent results. This is in spite of its challenges. Of the 14,000 schools in the state, it is only about 2,000 that belongs to the government.
“But those 2,000 schools are the ones that are providing free education where free textbooks are given, where tuition is free, where children participate in different clubs, climate change clubs, farmer’s club, Energy club and Be Road Friendly Club. This happens at no cost to the children.
“It is not only one day governor that we celebrate. We celebrate Master David, a national champion in Physics in the NNPC science competition tested against other students in Nigeria.”
He said story of the success of the children from the state educational system has spurred them to remain focussed, saying other potentials will mature in the fullness of time.
Fashola explained that the state education system thrives on diversity, saying the education process is merit driven, ethnic, religious and gender blind but simply developing younger generation for a greater tomorrow.
The governor stressed that his administration had ensured that no child desirous of having education had been left behind, saying that explains why the one day governor, whose father is a carpenter and mother, a refuse truck driver with Lagos Waste Management Agency (LAWMA), could emerge the winner of the competition.

Celebrities / Why I Donated My Kidney To Ojb-mabel by emmaliveth10(m): 11:19pm On Jan 05, 2014
STARGIST – Prolific producer and musician, Babatunde Okungbowa a.k.a OJB Jezreel and his wife, Mabel, talk about their 20-year-old marriage and why she gave him her kidney.
How long have you been married?
OJB: We have been married for 20 years.
When and how did you meet?
OJB: We met in church. The church just opened in the area and she came with her younger sister who was my friend. The sister was the matchmaker. To a large extent then, I think I was looking for a partner. As with everybody, you get to a stage where you feel you have to make your life more grounded and I was looking in the direction of marriage.
What are some of the challenges of your 20-year-old marriage?
Mabel: There are several. OJB himself is a challenge, his music, lifestyle are all challenges even though he is not a night crawler. Sometimes, the children and I don’t get to see him because he is either working late or he is out of town. Overall, he ensures he remains a good father and husband.
Are there times you have felt like quitting the marriage?
Mabel: It has never crossed my mind. Marriage is for better or for worse. God keeps me going in this marriage and also my husband. Even though he did not see my inner person when we met, I saw his and I realised he is compassionate and has a wonderful personality. Even when he does wrong, he easily admits his fault and apologises before you go off on him.
What are some of the high points of your union?
OJB: That will be when you consider the fact that in every relationship, you definitely have your ups, downs and through it all, you still find yourself surviving it. That, I think, is laudable. A lot of relationships go through that and they don’t survive it.
Why did you decide to give him one of your kidneys?
Mabel: I did not even think twice about it, I had it and I gave it to him. He is my husband, the father of our children and I love him. This is somebody I have been with all my life. I did not tell anybody before I decided to, not even my parents because I had foreseen their reaction. There was no reason to inform them. When I married him, I told God I wanted the both of us to grow old together and live to see many generations. I am sure God knew this situation before he brought us together because not only am I a match for him, we are the same blood group and we are both stubborn.
How did you sail through the health challenge he had as a couple?
OJB: A major illness can break a home. Sometimes, instead of one partner seeing the other through the period of sickness, they would rather walk away. It could be draining them psychologically, financially or both. When you talk more as a couple, you create that atmosphere where you can actually share what you feel about the situation. I did not want anybody to donate an organ for me and I was very stubborn about it. I thought I was going to come out of the situation without a transplant. I was ready to go through any other route to make it happen. Above every other thing, I have always believed in the God factor and that is what has kept us going because Nigerians are very sceptical.

Religion / MYSTERIOUS: How General Overseer Disappeared After Car Crash In Osun by emmaliveth10(m): 8:09pm On Jan 02, 2014
Anxiety is mounting over the sudden
disappearance of the General Overseer of Christ
Worshippers Church with headquarters at Osubi,
Effurun, Warri, Delta State Prophet Duromola
Adedayo Samuel.
One source said Prophet Duromola might have
met his death in a ghastly auto crash that
occurred, yesterday, between 6.00 p.m and 8.00
p.m. along Akure-Ilesa expressway.
But another source said he might also have been
a victim of kidnap.
A source in Ikeji Arakeji area where the crash
occurred disclosed that after the crash and the
vehicle veered into the bush, they tried to give a
helping hand but did not meet anybody inside
the vehicle with the number plate already
removed.
Osun State police command spokesperson, Mrs
Folasade Odoro, said there was no official report
to that effect while family members from Owo,
Ondo State claimed that they had gone to various
hospitals in Owena, Ikeji-Arakeji, Ipetu-Ijesa,
Ilesa as his whereabout was still unknown at
press time.
According to the family members on search party,
the vehicle was found but the prophet was not
found, adding that no blood stain or anything
curious was noticed at the scene of the accident.
Elder Boro, a member of the Board of Trustees of
the church in a telephone interview said Prophet
Samuel phone rang throughout the night without
response.
He added that may be he was praying on the
mountain in Ilesa.
This was corroborated by Pastor Paul Opoweh,
the Prophet’s personal assistant, who said efforts
to reach him on phone proved abortive.
When the wife, Prophetess Eseoghene Blessing
Duromola was contacted, she said Prophet
Sanuel went to a mountain at Ilesa, with a
promise to return to Akure to pick her and the
children to Warri for the end of the year vigil but
that did not happen.

Sports / Woman Runs 500 Kilometers In 86 Hours Without Any Sleep by emmaliveth10(m): 11:22am On Jan 01, 2014
Kim Allen, a 47-year-old ultra-distance runner from New Zealand, recently broke the world record for running the longest distance without sleep. She surpassed the previous record of 486 km (set by American Pam Reed in 2005) by running a whopping 500 km. It took her 86 hours, 11 minutes and 9 seconds of non-stop running to complete the challenge.
Kim began at 6 am on the 19th of December, in Auckland, and kept at it for four long days. She ran initially, but slowed down to a walk in the final laps. The mother-of-four called her achievement “Sleepless in Auckland.” “It’s all a bit surreal at the moment,” she said, shortly after completing the feat.
This wasn’t her first attempt; Kim tried to beat Reed’s record last year, but she could only manage 370 km before she had to stop. This time, she reached her goal with blistered feet and swollen ankles. But Kim was so ecstatic about her achievement that she referred to her state as “just a bit weary.” She also said that she was overwhelmed and could not believe her quest was over.
Kim ran in support of the New Zealand Spinal Trust. Claire Donachie, a representative of that charity, had held up one end of the finishing tape. She was also one of the first to congratulate Kim. Michael Rodliffe, one of Kim’s supporters, said there wasn’t any fanfare when Kim broke the record by crossing the 486km mark. “We didn’t want to give her an excuse to stop,” he said. “In two hours’ time when she’s finished the 500, we’ll celebrate.”
Kim did celebrate her victory by going home with her family and catching up on some much-needed sleep.
