PoliticsRochas Okorocha Is Killing Imo by emmanuel529(op): 5:24pm On Oct 20, 2017
https://i1.wp.com/emmanuel17.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Rochas-Okorocha.jpg?resize=300%2C250

Governor Rochas Okorocha has been rated low in terms of governance considering the controversy surrounding the expensive statues and news of death in his South-eastern state.

After calling out the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, twice in ten months, I gave up. The governor has the whole of Imo as his duchy and he will do what he will do. So, what’s the point?

If I’m now constrained to cry more than the bereaved people of Imo, it’s simply because their worsening misery is killing me. For two weeks, Okorocha held the state hostage to mark his 55th birthday anniversary. School children, whose parents are still being owed salaries of up to three months, were lined in the streets of Owerri to salute the governor.

As for pensioners whose long arrears are being paid in dreadful bits, they watched Okorocha’s parade from the discomfort of their homes as their August/September cheques bounced again. Mothers whose stalls in Ekeukwu market had been demolished by the state government in defiance of a court order and the parents of Somtochukwu who lost the 10-year-old boy during the violent eviction were expected to send glowing tributes to Okorocha at 55.

Twenty-seven pre-selected women, each representing a local government, brought cakes to the governor State workers, who had been eating the life-size portraits of Okorocha since he would not pay them salaries, were offered yet more portraits and statues to eat to mark the governor’s 55th birthday. And to crown the insult, rogue politicians in the ruling All Progressives Congress organised a party at the stadium, aired on live TV, to tell us how the governor had made the sun stand still in the last six years of his administration. While the show was on, he complimented the fawning crowd from time to time with that trademark grin that tells the story of his suzerainty. Okorocha is killing Imo.

With Friends Like Zuma

I would have stayed out, but how can I? How can anyone with a conscience see what Okorocha is doing and look the other way? How can? He took his folly to a whole new level last week when he invited South African President, Jacob Zuma, to crown activities marking his 55th birthday. With Zuma in town, chaperoned by his cousin, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Okorocha was immensely pleased about the exhibition of star power. But the outing, concealed from even the State House of Assembly and supervised by the governor’s private army, meant something more to Zuma: it was welcome escape from his woes at home.

As Zuma was boarding the plane to Nigeria, the Supreme Court of Appeal in his country ruled for the reinstatement of 783 charges of corruption and fraud against him. Zuma had been giving South African prosecutors a run-around over charges that he took bribes worth over $304,000 and was involved in racketeering, fraud and money laundering. This was apart from charges that he used $23 million of state money to refurbish his sprawling apartment in Nkandla – funds which the courts ruled that he must return.

On top of all this, are charges that Zuma’s bosom business friends, the Guptas, had used their influence with him to capture the state. As Zuma was landing in Owerri and Okorocha was unveiling his statue, naming a road after him, and awarding him a chieftancy title, protests were going on in South Africa, calling for Zuma to resign because his government has been overwhelmed by corruption. He’s still in power but the office left him since.

Too Much Of A Good Thing

There is an elaborate spin that the visit is also to help strengthen cooperation between the Okorocha and Zuma Foundations; but that’s nonsense. Philanthropy could use better examples than two adults who rob Peter to pay Paul. Isn’t it amusing that since news of the Okorocha-Zuma project broke, not a few South Africans have been saying Okorocha is doing it to give Nigerians a pass for drugs in South Africa? That’s nonsense. Whatever Nigerians will do – good or bad – hopefully more good than bad – they will do without help from the Okorochas of this world. Okorocha and Zuma are on their own. But this is not about the South African president. It’s about his host, Okorocha, who thinks it’s all right to turn a blind eye on Zuma’s baggage and, worse still, insult the people of Imo by hosting his guest with public funds from which he also erected a Zuma statue. In Okorocha’s haste to acquire star power, he couldn’t even make a good statue of Zuma. He was out-conned. Okorocha is killing Imo. It’s OK if he wishes to cultivate Zuma’s personal friendship. But he cannot pay N500 million or more from the state’s treasury to do so.

Zuma, which Zuma? Is Zuma a friend, really? In two years under his watch as South African president, 116 Nigerians have been killed in that country, most of them victims of premeditated homicides. A good number of them are Igbos and at least one, Daniel Timothy, is from Umunuma Okohia, in Isiala Mbano Local Government of Imo State. As Okorocha unveiled Zuma’s statue and named a road in Owerri after him, I wondered how the parents of Timothy would feel whenever they see that statue or travel on that road. What was Timothy’s widow – and his surviving four children –thinking on hearing the news? True, Nigerians have not been the only targets of the rising wave of xenophobia in South Africa. But in the last two years, no other country has recorded a higher number of casualties than Nigeria. And this has happened in spite of repeated promises by Zuma’s government that it will ensure the safety of Nigerians. Did Okorocha bring up the X-word with Zuma or did he simply grin all the way in his peculiar Okorocha way?

APC Mascot

The ruling APC obviously does not think that Okorocha is a problem. He’s the party’s mascot in the South East, a region where President Muhammadu Buhari is most unpopular. With a governor like Okorocha, right-thinking people in the South East must be wondering if the Imo State governor is the face of change that the ruling party prides itself on, unless it was meant to be a change for the worse. Okorocha’s continued shenanigans guarantee Buhari and his ruling party a rough road to any hope of recovery in the South East, if it still matters to them.

Whether it’s about a possible new life in the South East or the pursuit of the APC’s anti-corruption agenda, Okorocha is killing whatever is left of his party’s image. Some will argue that it would be unfair to single him out among the governors. After all, in the race to the bottom, Yahaya Bello (Kogi), Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara), and Ayo Fayose (Ekiti), are also doing their best to lead the pack. At this rate, however, it appears that the crown for hubris might be a straight fight between Bello and Okorocha.

In a region where women resisted unfair taxation by the colonial government in 1929, I’m at a loss why 88 years later and with far better educated, more enlightened and prosperous citizens, an Okorocha would take the people for a ride, grinning for good measure. My governor, my governor: your works are killing me.

PoliticsOkorocha And Jacob Zuma’s Statue – By Reuben Abati by emmanuel529(op): 2:25pm On Oct 17, 2017

What is it about South African President Jacob Zuma and statues? Two statues in one month- generating controversy from the streets of Pretoria to the streets of Owerri in Nigeria. In the first week of October, a 30-feet monument was unveiled in honour of President Zuma in the North West region of his country. South Africans had opposed the idea of the statue since it was first proposed in February 2017. When it was eventually unveiled, and labeled a monument, the attendant outrage was bitter and loud because it was actually a glorification of Zuma, disguised as a tourist project to preserve the site where Zuma and 45 others were arrested by the apartheid police as they travelled out of the country for military training in 1963.

The Premier, Supra Mahumapelo who commissioned the statue was accused of bad governance and insensitivity. The Zuma statue at Groot Marico has a borehole attached to it, whereas there is no potable water in the city in which it is located. Aggrieved South Africans recommended that the Statue should be pulled down, with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) offering to take the lead. Jacob Zuma is not one of Africa’s most loved leaders despite his having won election twice and leading one of Africa’s most historic political parties; the African National Congress.

His Presidency has been scandal-ridden, from allegations of abuse of office to a personal life characterized by much burlesque. The biggest threat to state reconstruction in Africa has been the ego and misconduct of African leaders. Compared to those he succeeded as South African President, it is hard at this point to imagine Jacob Zuma’s eventual place in South African history.

PoliticsAnxiety As Nnamdi Kanu’s Sureties Know Fate Tomorrow by emmanuel529(op): 1:53pm On Oct 16, 2017

There is a heightened anxiety ahead of tomorrow’s hearing in a treason case initiated against leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, by the federal government, following what will become of his sureties in court as his whereabouts remains unknown. Tunde Oyesina and Akeem Nafiu of the New Telegraph report.

Although there are a few cases rolled into one against the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, fate of his sureties will top one of the issues Justice Binta Nyako will determine in court tomorrow in one of the applications initiated by the federal government.

The federal government in one of the applications has asked the court to revoke the bail granted to Kanu in April on the ground of ill-health which appeared to have been allegedly breached by the IPOB leader since he was allowed home on bail.

But Kanu whose whereabouts had remained unknown since September 14 when the military allegedly invaded his Abia state residence, may have put his sureties on imprisonment path should he fail to show up in court tomorrow for the hearing of the felony case against him.

A surety, under the law, is someone who has presented himself to guarantee the presence of a defendant who has been admitted to bail during trial.

While the Federal Government said that the sureties risked imprisonment should Kanu be absent in court tomorrow, IPOB is insisting that the FG is in the best position to tell the world where Kanu is, and as such, the sureties cannot be held responsible for his absence.

At the moment, it is being rumoured in some quarters that Kanu had escaped to the United Kingdom through Malysia. This is just as members of his group are alleging that it is the military that abducted him when it raided his home.

SportsFIFA To Compensate Nigeria With N4.5bn Over Russia World Cup Qualifying by emmanuel529(op): 1:02pm On Oct 16, 2017
https://i2.wp.com/emmanuel17.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Super-Eagles-Celebrate.jpg?w=400

Coach Gernot Rohr has warned against another pay strike at the World Cup if the country hoped to improve on their previous outings at the global tournament.

At the 2014 World Cup, the Super Eagles skipped a training to protest the non-payment of bonus for qualifying for the tournament forcing the country’s sports minister to fly out by private jet to pay them almost $4 million cash in Brazil.

Rohr said he believes the three-time African champions can improve on their best World Cup performance of a Round of 16 by better and early preparation as well as ensuring money issues are sorted out well in advance. Nigeria will be paid a total of $12.5 million by FIFA for qualifying for Russia 2018 with $2.5 million of this amount paid for the Eagles to prepare adequately for the football showpiece.

They will earn more cash should they reach the knockout rounds of the tournament as they have done in 1994 and 2014. Nigeria have so far used a total of 37 players for the qualifying tournament for Russia 2018 and they are all entitled to a share of a qualification bonus. Rohr, a 64-year-old Franco-German coach, said he believes that with a fully prepared and united team both on and off the pitch, Nigeria can expect their best performance at next year’s tournament.

In an exclusive interview with PUNCH Newspaper, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a close associate of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and an elder statesman, disclosed that, Yoruba People Regret Voting for Buhari, He Belongs to Northerners.

Here are excerpts from the chat;

What’s your reaction to the revelation by the World Bank Group boss that President Muhammadu Buhari directed the financial institution to carry out more of its developmental projects in northern Nigeria?

The disclosure of the President of the World Bank Group only confirmed what I have been saying that President Muhammadu Buhari is president of the North and not president of Nigeria. It is unfortunate that even the international community is also aware of this nepotism – of Buhari’s unbridled desire to favour a section of the country to the detriment of the others. Is it only the North that is devastated? What about the Niger Delta region? What exactly has been done to salvage the area? He should focus on productive areas to engender development in the country. Buhari’s body language, words and actions show he is president of the North. Only those who are gullible will accept what his mouthpieces are saying – it’s mere damage control.

Car TalkParis To Phase Out Diesel Cars By 2024 by emmanuel529(op): 5:32pm On Oct 12, 2017

Paris authorities plan to banish all petrol and diesel-fuelled cars from the world’s most visited city by 2030, Paris City Hall said on Thursday.

The move marks an acceleration in plans to wean the country off gas-guzzlers and switch to electric vehicles in a city often obliged to impose temporary bans due to surges in particle pollution in the air.

Paris City Hall said in a statement France had already set a target date of 2040 for an end to cars dependent on fossil fuels and that this required speedier phase-outs in large cities.

PoliticsLet Every Part Of Nigeria Control Its Resources - Atiku Insists On Restructuring by emmanuel529(op): 2:19pm On Sep 25, 2017

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has advocated total fiscal federalism, which will ensure that all parts of the country control their resources. To him, the system Nigeria presently operate is incapable of leading to growth.

He further noted that a president from a region was not a guarantee of the region’s growth and development. Atiku spoke at the weekend in Abuja in an address at a youth forum organised by a coalition of civil societies. It was under the banner of Play Forum.

PoliticsAtiku: Igbos Rebuilt Their Region After The War But North Still Has Mud Houses by emmanuel529(op): 1:33pm On Sep 25, 2017

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar says despite fighting a civil war the Igbo have been able to rebuild their region, but that the north still has mud houses.

He spoke on the background of the need for Nigeria to be restructured.

Addressing a coalition of youth groups under the aegis of Play Forum in Abuja, Abubakar said those afraid of restructuring were lazy.

He said every region in the country should be allowed to control its resources.

“Left for me, I will ask every part of this country to take charge of its resources while the federal government should handle defence, foreign affairs and immigration among others in the exclusive list,” he said.

“It should not be complicated to start with all the recurrent items in the constitution. The president can dialogue with the governors or the national assembly for states to take charge of the roads, hospitals, schools and such other items in the concurrent List while the federal government will continue with items on the exclusive list.

“I would not have gone to school if I were born today. My parents were so poor they couldn’t afford to send me to school. I was born during the era education was free, food was free for me, I was sponsored from primary school to the university. There was even a job waiting for me before I graduated. Yet, there was no oil boom then. I am certainly not a product of oil boom Nigeria.

“So, I don’t know what those who are against restructuring are afraid of. Those afraid must be lazy. We fought the civil war with the Igbo. Today, the Igbo have been completely rebuilt, but we still find mud houses in the north. Is it the fault of the easterners that the north is like that?

“I think that what is most important is the devolution of powers and resources with the various governments whether states or regions. How do the people hold those in power accountable for the resources handed over to them?”
