Igbo Ora is one town in Oyo State Nigeria situated north of Lagos. The town is the headquarters of Ibarapa Central Local Government Area of Oyo State. It is situated between Sagaun, Iberekedo, Idofin and Abeokuta. This farming community which has seen little development in spite of its popularity is known for two things! First, it is known in Oyo state as the 6th largest charcoal producing town. Then, It is known internationally as The Twin Capital of the World. Yes, you read it correctly. In fact, a signage at the entrance to the town affirms this claim. And to cap it up, every family there has a set of twins. Statistics from various sources have indicated that there are about 158 twins per 1000 births in Igbo Ora. To back up this claim, a British gynecologist Patrick Nylander carried out a research in the 80’s and the results showed that there are about 45-50 twins per 1000 births. Most people believe the statistics may have doubled by now. So what’s so special about the Igbo Ora people that made them this fertile? What is the reason for the high rate of twins in Igbo Ora, Oyo state, Nigeria? This is one unanswered question that has been on the lip of many people as there has been not enough scientific research to determine the real reason behind the twinning rate of the Igbo Ora people. Most people have their own views about the matter. According to an article on Neoblack, the Olu of Igbo Ora Oba Oyewale Oyerogba in an interview in 2013 said “we eat a lot of okro leaf or ilasa soup. We also concume a lot of agida (yam). These diets influence multiple births. This is the same view many of the Igbo Ora people believe in. In another oral interview with a woman from the town, she revealed that she was a twin, she had twins who also had twins. Even her twin had twins that also had twins. I hope I didn’t confuse you with that… But she isn’t the only woman like that in Igbo ora. As a matter of fact, the women that sell the “leaf” used for making the soup are called Iya Ibeji (mother of twins). Even though there has been no scientific evidence for the high birth rate of twins, experts believe that the reason for the high twinning rate is embedded in their genes as they descended from ancestors to ancestors. They opined that their ancestors must have eaten a lot of yams which contains certain elements that increases a woman’s chances of fertilization. But these claims have been rendered useless by the mere fact that neighboring communities who eat the yam and also make the soup haven’t been as successful as Igbo Ora when it comes to twins. There are similar places with high twinning rates in the world. They include Kodinji in India and Candido Godoi in Brasil. In Yoruba land, and in many parts of the world, twins are believed to possess just one soul between them. This prompts the parents of twins to carve a wooden figure otherwise called an “Ibeji” for a twin whose other twin is dead although the number of people who do that now is limited based on the fact that everyone has embraced Christianity. I’d love to have twins; a boy and a girl. What about you?

Following the death of the 38th Oba of Benin His Royal Majesty Omo n’ Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Erediauwa I, otherwise referred to as Oba Erediauwa, there has been many speculations as to the burial rites of the late Oba. Brief Biography of Oba Erediauwa Oba Erediauwa was born Prince Solomon Aiseokhuoba Igbinoghodua Akenzua on the 22nd of June, 1923 to the 37th Oba of Benin, Oba Akenzua from who he inherited the throne on the 23rd Of March, 1979. He schooled at Government College Ibadan, Yaba College and the King’s College, Cambridge where he studied law and administration. He was once a district officer for the Eastern Nigeria Civil Service, A Permanent Secretary for the Federal Civil Service and a Commissioner for Finance in former Bendel State. Expected burial rites! The burial rites of the Benin people are quite unique to them. For the ordinary Benin man, there’s a 7 day burial ceremony and for the Chiefs or Important people in the kingdom, there’s a 14 day burial ceremony. But with the Oba, the case is different. Oba of Benin’s funeral rights are expected to take about 3 months. So how is it done? According to the tradition of Benin, the Oba never dies. He simply passes on to join his ancestors. And so is the case of Oba Erediauwa who transited to join his ancestors. His transition is announced with a cry. Now what? The “Evbo Osorgue Bunrun” is the cry that is heard in Benin on the fateful day when the Iyase or the Esongban of Benin breaks the white chalk into bits in the presence of the royal family and chiefs at the Ughe Ozolua palace ground. Evbo Osorgue Bunrun means “the chalk of the Oba has been broken”, referring to the fact that the Oba has gone to join his ancestors. After the chalk has been broken, the earth is taken from the feet of the people and a formal announcement is made by the Esongban with the chalk in hand, to inform the people of the Oba’s transition. Shortly after the announcement, the royal funeral rites “emwin n’ekhua” meaning “the big things” kick off. Part of the funeral ceremony are done in secret and in the open at the palace ground of the Edaiken N’Uselu (the heir to the throne) and that of the Oba. The Edaiken communicates the do’s and don’ts of the ceremony to the people. As a mark of respect, the following are observed… All markets in Benin are closed and buying and selling is done on a low key.All dancing and drumming associated with any other burial are stopped. The dresses and some songs used during the funeral ceremony aren’t to be used by anyone after the period of the ceremony. On one of the days of the ceremony, there is no cooking with open fire. Also on another day, all the males throughout the length and breadth of Benin Kingdom are to shave off all the hairs on their head, including the princes and the princesses. On that day, no cap is to be worn and women aren’t allowed to cover their heads. The Oba’s grave is then prepared for his corpse which is buried in a sitting position. It is pertinent to note that reports have it that in the olden days, the Oba of Benin was always buried with human sacrifices. But all that has changed now as animals like sheep and goats are used instead. May Oba Erediauwa’s soul rest in peace. This post is based on a research of the burial of past Oba’s of Benin. http://www.couturecrib.com/2016/05/oba-erediauwa-of-benin-dead-burial.html

There are many reasons for your inability to sleep. first, I'd like to ask you a few questions. 1. have u seen a doctor? 2. how long have you been using sleeping pills? 3. do you think too much/worry too much? 4. do you press your phone when you're about to sleep? I did a post on smartphone addiction. https://www.nairaland.com/3053753/smartphone-addiction-subconscious-obsession-everyone Now, lets look at worry. Please note that I'm not a doctor. When you lie down to sleep every night, there's a tendency that you're going to ruminate over the days events. as you do this, your mind begins to work, causing sleep to elude you for the meantime. If you can, try playing jazz music, u know.. instrumentals when sleeping... close your eyes... let your mind focus on sleeping... you won't open your eyes until the following morning... if you are a member of the phone operators in bed team, then you need to stop using your phone for the meantime. Make sure you go see a doctor so they can offer better medical advice. this is my two cent! Stop worrying! Clear your mind of all thoughts! focus on one thing - sleep! SLEEP... ** blows jazz on the thread ***** |

Culture beliefs is defined as a set of cultural or stereotypical practices that people do or believe in even though they aren’t certain about the efficacy of their belief. Each tribe and race has its own belief. Today, we’d look at the belief of the some Igbo culture beliefs that you probably haven’t heard of. It is pertinent to note that the Igbo people occupy the south eastern part of Nigeria and their native languages differ slightly. This means that a man from Anambra state may understand only a thing or two when a man from Abia state or Ebonyi state speaks his native language. This is one major reason for the diversity in their culture. So, During my undergraduate days, one of the courses I did in my final year in school had a sub theme which was related to superstitious beliefs. The first day we had the class, something urgent came up and so he lecturer had to leave the class. As a result of the assignment she gave us, my eyes were opened to the following unbelievable Igbo cultural beliefs. When a man dies in some parts of Igbo land, the wife is restricted from attending any burial ceremony within a period of one year. She’s restricted to wearing one cloth (black or white cloth). People believe that when she attends that burial, she is going to die. Once a green snake is killed unknowingly, it is given a befitting burial by the one who killed it. People believe it will start affecting the family of the killer if he doesn’t give it a befitting burial. The killer is expected to purchase some items like powder, mats and other items that are listed by the elders of the community and the chief priest of the community. The snake here is referred to as a totem. In Awka, Anambra state, the indigenes don’t hurt the Monkey popularly referred to as the “Enwe Imoka”. Anyone who does so, gives the monkey a befitting burial. Failure to do so has dire consequences attached to it. Other places have their own totems like the python in Enugwu-Ukwu in Anambra state. There’s a salty water in Okposi in Ebonyi state that doesn’t dry up and only women can fetch it. More so, it’s only fetched using the ancient clay salt. There have been many stories about people who have brought in machinery and equipment but have never been able to refine the water into salt. The salty water cannot be taken out of the village. Rather, people from various places come to buy the salt that has been refined by the people of Okposi. In Nkanu in Enugu South L.G.A of Enugu state, when a grandmother dies, the granddaughter is not allowed to eat anything that was cooked for the burial. She’s not even allowed to drink anything that is meant for the burial. If she does, I guess only God knows what will happen. In some parts of Igbo land, people still believe that when members of a family die in successions, that the family is either being hunted diabolically by someone or that they are cursed. Well, scientifically, there have been research evidence to show the possibility of recessive genes of hereditary diseases showing up after 3 generations. There are still chances that the family is being hunted by someone who wants them dead. Reincarnation! The Igbo people believe in reincarnation otherwise called “ilo uwa” in Igbo language. Reincarnation refers to a belief that after somebody’s death, they are born again into the world especially through a close family member. The Igbo’s aren’t the only one who believe in this. I once read a story on Nairaland about a queen who died in the late 80’s but reincarnated a few years ago in the form of a small child in a bid to fight the current king of the community who had been committing atrocities and offending the land, sending a lot of indigenes of the community into exile. There’s an exhaustive list of Igbo culture beliefs. We’d look at more of these cultural beliefs in a later post. One more thing, the Imoka festival 2016 is coming up soon. I’m going to bring you the highlights of the festival.

A few weeks ago, I had a very crucial exam to write. And so one evening, I left my room and headed for one of the lecture halls nearby. I intended to read for as long as I could throughout the night. When I got there, I met some other students who had come for the same reason like myself. And so I began to read, and after what seemed to be like ages, I checked my time and it was 9.15pm. Then I looked around and something struck me! I was the only person who wasn’t pressing his smartphone at that time! And so I asked myself, “can one actually be addicted to a smartphone?” Over the past few years, the use of smartphones has become ubiquitous with over 1 billion individuals worldwide owning at least one smartphone. There has been not only an increase in the number of smartphone users but also an increase in the number of smartphone makers and the number of smartphones available for purchase in the market. This stems primarily from the fact that smartphones have become an integral part of our everyday lives. Did you know that… According to Wikipedia, the term smartphone was first used in the year 1995 to describe AT&T’s PhoneWriter Communicator. This led many to define a smartphone as a mobile phone with an advanced mobile operation system which combines the features of a personal computer operating system with other features useful for mobile or handheld use. Owing to the increasing number of activities which people can do with a smartphone, a lot of people have turned their obsession of their smartphones into an addiction. So what is smartphone addiction? In a lay man’s term, smartphone addiction simply refers to having the “I must have my phone with me at all times” mindset. To many, smartphone addiction is also known as an excessive obsessive use of the smartphone while others call it mobile phone (smartphone) overuse or nomophobia. Whichever name it’s called, it still means one thing; over-dependence on a smart mobile phone. Wondering what nomophobia means? Here’s a list of terms associated with smartphone addiction and their meaning. Nomophobia: This refers to a psychological syndrome which is the fear of being without a working mobile phone. The word nomophobia is a combination of three different words no, mobile and phobia. Mobile phone overuse: Like the name simply implies, refers to an overdependence seen among mobile phone users. Behavioral experts are of the opinion that it’s a form of behavioral habituation (addiction) Now you know the basic definition of smartphone addiction… So, What are the causes and effects of smartphone addiction? The chief culprit, in this case, is the overuse of the smartphone itself. From making calls to chatting, sending texts, emails, and instant messages, to sharing pictures, videos and status updates on social networks, and streaming online films like comedians in a car getting coffee, there is an endless list of what you can use your smartphone to do. How does this cause smartphone addiction? I used to be guilty of checking my phone first thing in the morning even before I say my early morning prayers until I started applying the techniques in this post “7 things healthy people do every morning”. Unconsciously, many people spend too much time using their smartphones to do at least 5 out of the aforementioned activities above without knowing they are enslaving themselves to their smartphones, certainly oblivious of the effect of their smartphone overuse on their lives. Health wise, psychologically and socially, there is a long list of effects of smartphone overuse. I have only outlined a few below… Digital dementia: This refers to a situation where a sufferer has memory deficits and attention disorders as a result of excessive use of their smartphones. Phantom vibration syndrome: This is a type of feeling you have when you feel your phone vibrated but actually, it didn’t. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: This refers to a painful progressive condition which occurs when the median nerve in the wrist is compressed. Insomnia: Research statistics have shown that people who use their smartphones when they are supposed to sleep are prone to experiencing insomnia more than people who limit the use of their smartphones. Social disconnection: This is arguably the most important effect of excessive use of the smartphone. Many people tend to disconnect themselves from the real social life and in lieu, live a life on social networks like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram where they make virtual friends. Now here’s the kicker! How do you find out if you’re addicted to your smartphone? What are the signs and symptoms that you’re excessively obsessed with your smartphone? When you begin to feel anxious because you don’t have your phone in your physical possession. When you are constantly checking your phone for texts, pings instant messages and tweets and you feel the compulsion to reply immediately. When you experience phantom vibration. When you become less conversant in conversations and with conversations. You tend to ignore the people you’re talking with in a bid to reply that tweet, Instagram tag or Facebook message. When you start having low grades in school as a result of using your smartphone when you’re supposed to be reading. When you run 35mins to the grocery store and you’re just about the corner only to realize you left your phone at home and you must go back and get it. When you’re replying some unimportant email in the middle of a romantic moment with your partner, especially during sex. When you’re texting when driving especially if the text is unimportant. When you constantly fall asleep every night with your smartphone in your hand. When you’re texting, playing games or watching a new music video in the library. So what’s the bottom line? In order to reduce your level of dependence on your smartphone, you need to start doing the things I’ll list in my next post on “How to break the smartphone addiction habit!” Source: http://www.topicsbay.com/smartphone-addiction-causes-solution/ |
Many years ago, there was a country that had everything many countries wished they had. From great people to awesome cuisines and a vast array of languages from over 250 ethnic groups, that country was blessed more than the word “blessed”. That country is Nigeria; a country filled with good people. Before the country Nigeria gained independence from their British colonial masters, a huge part of their cultural beliefs was trashed in other for new beliefs to take the center stage. Aside that, many cultural artifacts from the country found its way into the British museums, denying the generations yet unborn a peek into the rich cultural heritage of its ancestors. After the country gained independence, there seemed to be a surge in the quest to act like the British. This led to an increase in the number of people that migrated from rural areas into the urban areas in search of greener pastures. The outcome of this migration is the gradual extinction of the culture of Nigeria which was shaped by Nigeria’s multiple ethnic groups. When our people left their rural homes to urban areas in search of greener pastures, they left behind them some elements of culture from the tribe they belonged to. A quintessential example is the native languages which is currently being replaced by the English language in Nigeria. Let me tell you a short story. My uncle left the village a long time ago and travelled down to Lagos in search pf greener pastures. He found what he was looking for, but he literally exchanged that for kids who were disconnected from their people. My cousins have lived in Lagos all their lives. They only come down to the eastern part of the country once in a year, sometimes, once in two years. They have lost connection with the tradition of their people and the worst part of the story is that they don’t know how to speak their native language. My cousins aren’t the only ones guilty of disconnection from the culture of their people. There are millions of Nigerian youths who have subconsciously been disconnected from their native cultures. How did the culture of Nigeria suddenly start facing extinction? Parents are the primary cause of the perceived extinction of the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria. First and foremost, they should be teaching their children the native language, but the reverse is the case. It’s not uncommon to see a youth who cannot speak his native language. Secondly, the schools are not helping matters. Until recently, the curriculum of Nigerian schools were designed after the British. The implication of this was that some generations of individuals were denied the knowledge of the culture of their people. During my undergraduate days, one of my roommate used to say that he had never done the subject “Igbo” before and that was the main reason he was finding it difficult to pass the course in the university. The society itself has also contributed in its own way to the extinction of the some of the culture of Nigeria. Many people who try to associate with the tradition of their people are perceived to be traditionalists. Since Nigeria is a religious country, no one wants to bear that tag and the stigma that goes with it. It is pertinent to note that religion hasn't affected the culture of Nigeria. Rather, people have been misusing the religion as a cloak to attack certain cultural practices that they don’t like. The Bible supported the preservation of some acts which have become today’s religious tradition. The way forward… There’s only one way to solve the problem of the extinction of the Nigerian culture; a public enlightenment program. Yes! You heard me! Proponents of the preservation of culture can effectively stem the tide in this situation. Schools, mass media, social media are effective channels that can be used to propagate the need for the preservation of the culture of Nigeria as well as the processes that would be undertaken. Through this enlightenment program, the stereotypical beliefs of the society about culture and traditionalism would be corrected. Parents would know the importance of teaching their children their native language and the schools would be the most interesting place to learn about culture of the people in Nigeria. In the words of a popular Nigerian politician, Senator Ben Murray Bruce, “I just want to make common sense.” Source: http://www.couturecrib.com/2016/04/is-culture-ofnigeria-going-into.html |

Nigeria is a land blessed with over 250 different ethnic groups, each with its own cultures and tradition. Divided along a tribal border line, the country has 3 major ethnic groups which dominate the others. They are the Yoruba's, the Hausa's and the Igbo. The Igbo's are situated in the south eastern part of the country, even though they are found everywhere especially in the north. The Imoka Festival in Awka, Anambra state is a Nigerian Cultural festival I've witnessed over and over again for many years. I'll take time to treat you with bits and pieces of information that'll satisfy your curiosity. Brief Origin of The Imoka Festival According to oral reports, in the olden days, the people of Awka came under frequent attacks from mercenaries and warriors from neighboring villages. The topography of the Awka area was such that it had very good forest vegetation. There was this specie of monkey that inhabited these forests. Whenever the other villages want to attack the Awka people, these monkeys begin to raise alarm that'll draw the attention of the Awka people who equipped themselves and got ready for war. As a mark of honor, the monkey became a totem for the Awka people. Those monkeys aren't as friendly as one expects, but they aren't unfriendly either. They're fond of going into people's compounds, climbing the trees there and taking what they like. And because of the belief and the respect the Awka people have for the monkeys, they don't harm it. The Imoka festival There is often no fixed date in the year for the festival, but it often occurs between April and July. The build up to the festival begins in April, on a date approved by the chief priest of Imoka, known to the Awka people as Eze Imoka. The Eze Imoka is the chief custodian of the imoka groove where the shrine is located. Only the initiates are allowed into the place. In the olden days, the days that lead to the main day are filled with fun fare as many groups take their masquerades out through the villages nearby, showing off their strength and endurance abilities as they flog themselves turn by turn. There are two very important days in the festival. The day the Awka people go to Umuokpu and the festival day proper, which always happens within four or five days. Awka is a town that is made up of about 26 villages. One of those villages Umuokpu is located after Amawbia, another town in Awka which is believed to be made up of strangers in Awka (according to the name). After the Eze Imoka has fixed the dates for the celebrations, they all chose a day (which is often on a Tuesday) to go down to Umuokpu and inform them. Everyone is allowed to come with their masquerades and age grades. The Umuokpu people prepare the "Abacha Mmiri" I.e. the tapioca for them. After informing them, the Awka people return and wait for the festival day proper. On the festival day, everyone comes out to have fun and flog themselves in a show of superiority and endurance. The people from Umuokpu come down to Awka and join in the celebration. One peculiar thing happen on the Imoka day; it always rains on that day. More so, women aren't allowed to wear trousers on the Imoka day and even on the day the Awka people go to Umuokpu. You really need to witness this festival. You'll surely marvel at the rich cultural heritage that abounds in Nigeria. Note: In order to be sure of facts before posting, I've left out some parts of the celebrations till I ascertain them. http://www.couturecrib.com/2016/04/nigerian-culture-imoka-festival-you-don.html |
The journey of a thousand miles often begins with a step. A thousand mile journey isn’t any different from a relationship. For a relationship to last long, there are a lot of emotional needs you need to fulfill. Every human has an emotional need, so you need to find out what your partner wants or perhaps needs and then try to fulfill them. The layman’s definition of an emotional need refers to a craving that when satisfied, leaves you with a feeling of happiness and contentment and love for your partner, but when it’s not satisfied, makes you feel the entire opposite of the former feelings. There has often been a divide between relationship needs and emotional needs, but from my own point of view, these two are quite interchangeable. Now, let’s take a look at some basic definitions. Want: The 8th edition of the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary defines “want” as a desire or a wish for something. Over a period of time, this desire often turns into a need. Need: A “need” refers to something that is essential; something that you cannot do without. What do partners want or need in a relationship? It is pertinent to note at this point that there is just a slight demarcation between wants and needs, since the former often develops into the latter if it’s met at the initial stage. A typical illustration of the interrelationship between the two terms is this… A woman may want her man to spend more time with her. He often obliges, but the more he does that, the more she desires it. It becomes an integral part of her routine; something that she cannot do without. Meeting the following basic relationship and emotional needs will make your partner feel peace, love and a sense of belonging and this implies that you’ve taken the time to focus on doing something that they’ll appreciate very much. I have taken the time to categorize them into two major divisions, which I would elucidate in my next post. Here they are… A sense of humor Admiration Affection Appreciation Companionship Compassion Conversational/Communication needs Domestic support Energy Family commitment Financial needs Honesty Novelty Openness Physical touch Praise and approval Respect Security Sensuous affection/sexual needs Space/freedom Spiritual support To be seen To feel cherished To feel like they can count on you Validation Visionary support Men’s needs in a relationship Have you ever wondered what males need in a relationship? Unlike women, men’s emotional needs are quite predictable to a certain degree. For observant women, they’ll notice this in the course of their relationship whilst the others who aren’t observant are in for some deep challenge since men are much more prone to silently suffering when their emotional needs aren’t met.
