In the US, states from Maine to Michigan have been affected by the adverse weather Storms cut power in US and Canada Ice storm hits Canada Watch More than 500,000 households in the north-eastern US and the south-eastern Canada are still without electricity after last weekend's severe ice storm. Utility crews are working round-the-clock, but warn that some homes could be without power at least until Saturday. In Toronto, 72,000 people were without electricity on Christmas Day, officials in Canada's Ontario province said. At least 27 deaths in the region have been linked to the storm. Most of those were caused by apparent carbon monoxide poisoning as people used gas generators, charcoal stoves and other appliances to heat their homes in freezing temperatures. "I understand they want to keep warm, but you cannot do this. This is deadly," Toronto Mayor Rob Ford warned earlier this week. Other fatalities were caused by traffic accidents. Elsewhere in Canada, tens of thousands of people are still without power in New Brunswick and Quebec, and hundreds in Nova Scotia. In the US, states from Maine to Michigan have been affected by the adverse weather. Travel between between Toronto and Montreal, Ottawa and New York had been disrupted. Environment Canada meteorologist David Phillips warned earlier this week that the ice would remain as temperatures stayed below freezing. "There's no natural melting going on," he said. "It's going to be human effort and endeavour that will get rid of the sheath of ice that's covering eastern Canada."

He stinging criticism comes just 10 days before transitional controls on Romanian and Bulgarian migrants are lifted. 10:55pm UK, Saturday 21 December 2013 David Cameron attends EU summit in Brussels David Cameron in Brussels this week The Bulgarian President has warned David Cameron that he risks being judged by history as a Prime Minister who has isolated the UK and damaged its reputation. Rosen Plevneliev said his countrymen were watching Britain's immigration debate unfold and raising questions about the "democratic, tolerant and humane British society". It comes as Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg says the Lib Dems will not accept any further curbs to migrants and a Tory backbencher warns that the rhetoric on immigration could stop non-white people voting Conservative. The stinging criticism - in an interview with The Observer newspaper - comes just 10 days before transitional controls on Romanian and Bulgarian migrants are lifted. The Observer leads with a rebuke by the Bulgarian President Some think-tanks have warned that 50,000 people could arrive from the two countries each year. Mr Cameron has reacted to concerns about the move with a string of interventions including to limit access to benefits for those travelling to the UK. And at the European Council meeting in Brussels this week he threatened to veto the EU accession of new countries such as Albania and Serbia without strict new immigration rules. One idea put forward by the PM is to set a GDP limit below which countries will not be given free movement of labour if they join the EU. Mr Plevneliev said he feared for the safety of Bulgarians in Britain. He said "iron curtains" should not remain in the 20th century, arguing that this was a time to bring down walls, not to build them. "Mr Cameron should never forget that a politician is remembered in history not with the everyday business," he said. Mr Clegg makes his comments in the Sunday Times. He has supported the crackdown on benefits for immigrants saying the right to move and work is not the same as the right to claim. "But this is where we draw the line," he says, rejecting talk of "arbitrary" caps on EU nationals. That was a policy idea being considered by the Home Office that was leaked to the media in recent weeks. Mr Clegg has warned he will block moves to curb immigration from the EU. Mr Clegg's party is traditionally liberal on immigration and did support an amnesty for illegal immigrants before the last election. But public fears have led the Lib Dems to drop the pledge, admitting that public trust in the immigration system is broken and it would be asking too much. Mark Field, a Conservative backbencher, has also entered the debate saying the tough talk on immigration could turn off non-white voters. He has warned Mr Cameron not to repeat the mistakes made by Mitt Romney, the US Republican candidate, in 2012. He said failure to reach out to the Hispanic community had meant it had failed to understand his stance on immigration.

Tourists travelling to a wildlife safari at Kenya's famous Masai Mara national park are attacked as they travel through Mombasa.11:44am UK, Thursday 12 December 2013 Kenya police attempt to suppress demonstrators reacting to the killing of an Islamic cleric at Kenya's coastal city of Mombasa Mombasa has been the scene of violent protests in recent months Attackers hurled a grenade at British tourists in the Kenyan port city of Mombasa, but it failed to explode. Mombasa's police chief Robert Kitur told the AFP news agency: "The grenade was detonated safely by experts. "We are investigating the incident and looking for the man who threw the grenade at the tourists and fled." The tourists, who were in a vehicle in the Likoni district, were travelling from the popular Indian Ocean resort of Diani on the way to a wildlife safari at the Masai Mara national park. Tourism is a key source of foreign currency for Kenya. The British High Commission in Kenya said it had "heard the reports and was investigating", but gave no further details. Kenya has seen a wave of grenade attacks since it invaded southern Somalia in October 2011 to try to oust al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab insurgents. Explosives have been thrown into restaurants in Mombasa and crowded areas in the capital Nairobi, and there has been a string of attacks in the remote northeast region bordering Somalia. Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the assault on Nairobi's Westgate mall in September, in which at least 67 people died during a four-day siege. In September 2011 gunmen killed Briton David Tebbutt and kidnapped his wife Judith. She was held for six months before being freed. Three weeks later, disabled Frenchwoman Marie Dedieu was kidnapped from her home on Kenya's Manda island and later died in captivity in Somalia. Mombasa police say they have strengthened security. Mr Kitur said: "We are appealing to everybody to exercise caution, especially over this festive season, and to share information with security agencies to win the war on terror. "We have intensified security at tourist hotels and other vital installations to avert terrorism attacks."

EyesulO: Seeing there are lots of people who will love to know to drive but can't get someone to teach them to drive for one reason or the other. I mean serious people who are tired of being disadvantaged in any way for not knowing how to drive. I am offering free driving lessons for 20 people who meet the following criteria:This is really funny. How can you instruct a learner that he or she should be willing to learn within one week as everyone do not have similar degree of assimilation? Also instructing people must have a car? Technically, he or she is probably a good driver if anyone has a car. Is this suppose to be some kind of Tv or Online reality show that Someone should text in a convincing way of the need to learn how to drive? Lastly, are you a certified driving trainer? do you own a certified driving school? Please, be very careful of what you wish for as there are many ways to ......................... |

The Minister of Interior, Patrick Abba-Moro, has said that the country loses about N50 billion Naira worth of property every year to fire incidents. Abba-Moro, however, warned that the country risked losing more of its commonwealth to fire incidents due to the effect of climate change. The minister disclosed this in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital on Thursday, during the 5th National Council on Fire while speaking with journalists. He said that his ministry had already presented the National Fire Service Code to the Federal Executive Council which had been found relevant to President Goodluck Jonathan’s transformation agenda. Abba-Moro noted that the next step was how to get the code to the local and state governments by presenting the Fire Safety Code to the National Economic Council. He expressed hope that when that was done everybody would embrace the imperatives of the code. The minister said that the available statistics had shown that fire incidents had been occurring due to the expansion of cities without corresponding provision of fire safety, building plans approval without due consideration for safety requirements, hazardous materials being manufactured and handled without recourse to safety. He stated, “We’ve already presented the national fire safety code to the federal executive council and it has been properly noted and found germane to the present transformation drive of the present administration. “Let me equally say that by the time we get through with the state governments, by the time people become aware of the need to embrace a common code for fire prevention and disaster prevention, Nigeria will be the better for it. “As I am speaking to you now, we are losing an average of N50bn worth of property annually and so many lives are lost every year but because fire disasters are not regular occurrence, people hardly take proper notice of what happens. But when fire disasters occur, especially against the impending climate change, it would cost this nation very seriously in loss to commonwealth,” he said. The minister noted that the conference was an annual event whose primary objective was the networking among major stakeholders of the fire service infrastructure in order to create the necessary synergy required for the implementation of a common national code for the fire service. Abba Moro said, “All the imperatives that will make fire service effective to save the nation of monumental losses in our commonwealth through fire accident has been taken into their proper perspectives and we’ve emphasises the basic requirement for an effective fire service system in the country. “From every indication, people are being gradually sensitised on the importance of developing and sustaining an effective Federal Fire Safety system which is another major achievement as far as the conference is concern.”

THE Academic Staff Union of Universities has asked for an autopsy to determine the actual cause of the death of its former president, Prof. Festus Iyayi, our correspondent learnt in Benin, Edo State, on Monday. The varsity teachers’ union is said to be suspecting foul play in the death of Iyayi who died after his vehicle was involved in an accident with a vehicle in the convoy of the Kogi State Governor, Capt. Idris Wada (retd.), on November 12. ASUU’s suspicion that the cause of Iyayi’s death could not have been the injuries he sustained in the accident was said to have been fuelled by an object, which reportedly pierced through the late activist’s body. The University of Benin chapter of ASUU, in a statement on Monday, said, “Prof. Festus Iyayi did not just die in an accident, but was wilfully murdered by the state and its agents. “At the appropriate time ASUU and Prof. Iyayi’s family shall demand concrete answers from the state for his murder.” The statement, which was signed by the union’s chairman and secretary, Dr. Anthony Monye-Emina and Okeri Henry, respectively, said it was aware that there were deliberate steps by the state and its agents to distort facts of the accident as it happened. It stated, “This started with the reckless and irresponsible press statement that was issued by the Kogi State Government to try to explain away the killing of Prof. Iyayi, and there are further attempts to conceal and distort available evidence. We shall of course meet them with the facts.” Warning state officials to stay away from Iyayi’s funeral rites, ASUU said, “Iyayi’s family are capable of giving the late professor the befitting burial he deserves.” It also served notice that “Governor Idris Wada and those ancilliary to the accident will be made to face trial for the murder Prof. Iyayi.” Commenting on the development, Iyayi family spokesman, Prof. Robert Ebewele, said that the issue of autopsy was ASUU’s affair and that the family would go ahead with the burial already slated for the first week of December.
