PoliticsNew Document Confirms Shehu Yar’adua Was Pardoned In 1998 by emmatony(op): 3:28pm On Mar 16, 2013
By SaharaReporters, New York
Following yesterday’s landmark revelation by SaharaReporters that several of the national figures granted pardon by President Goodluck Jonathan this week had already been pardoned as far back as 14 years ago, we have obtained another document which confirms that Musa Yar'Adua, the former Chief of General Staff to General Olusegun Obasanjo, was indeed pardoned as of 1998 by then military head of state, General Abdusalami Alhaji Abubakar.

The document, also gazetted in 1998, granted pardon to Musa, the older brother of deceased Nigerian president, Umaru Yar'Adua, along with Obasanjo himself. The pardon was activated with immediate effect to enable Obasanjo, who had previously been military leader between 1976 and 1979, to participate in the political transition that got him back into national leadership in 1999.

The new document is another pointer to the desperation that attended the controversial pardon granted Jonathan’s mentor DSP Alamieseigha, the former governor of Bayelsa State who was convicted for money laundering offences in 2006. It underlines the short cuts that were taken by Mr. Jonathan in the effort to surround Alamieyeseigha’s name with those of other Nigerians who were thought to be in need of pardon, or whose previous pardon might not be noticed.

The US government has condemned the state pardon granted Mr. Alamieyeseigha, stating that the act set back the war on corruption in Nigeria.

Last year the United States targeted Alamieyeseigha in civil asset forfeiture actions. In June 2012, the kleptocracy initiative recovered some $400,000 from the corrupt former governor in monies being held at a brokerage account with Fidelity Investments in Boston, Massachusetts. Alamieyeseigha remains a wanted man in the United Kingdom, which he fled in 2005 dressed as a woman.

PoliticsButcher Shows Pride, Stabs Self To Death In Zaria by emmatony(op): 1:24pm On Jan 17, 2013
Zaria – A 44-year-old butcher at Tudun Wada Market in Zaria, Kaduna State, Tanko Maitsiren-Safe, has stabbed himself to death.

Confirming the report, the Sarkin Fawan Tudun Wada, Malam Abdullahi Ibrahim, described the incident as pathetic and an outdated means of showing pride by ancient butchers.

Ibrahim advised other butchers to transform the trade, “especially now that most businesses in the country have been modernised”.

A police source in the area, who pleaded anonymity, also confirmed the incident in Zaria.

The source said the case was reported to the police on Jan. 15 and that policemen were immediately mobilised to the scene of the incident.

“On reaching the scene, they snapped the picture of the deceased and gathered some information from eye witnesses.

“After that, we ordered his relations to bury him,” said the source.

Similarly, an eye witness, Malam Yahuza Mohammed, said that the deceased and his boy were preparing “tsire” or “suya meat” (barbeque) when the boy slightly cut his hand with a knife.

He said: “on seeing what happened to his boy, the deceased collected the knife and proudly stabbed his lap thrice without any harm to his lap.

“He then opened his stomach and stabbed first and second without causing any injury to the stomach, but on stabbing the third time, the knife went dip into him thus flushing out his intestines forcefully,” he said.

The incident has dominated public discourse in Zaria City and its surrounding villages. (NAN)

PoliticsGunmen Kill 26-yr-old Mother In Benue by emmatony(op): 5:42am On Jan 03, 2013
BY PETER DURU

MAKURDI—Unknown gunmen yesterday murdered a 26-year- old woman at Taraku in Gwer Local Government Area of Benue State while her one year baby boy is also battling for  life after being inflicted with serious injuries by the attackers.

Sources said that the deceased, Sewuse Tyoor and her son were attacked last night in their sleep by the assailants.
It was also gathered that the deceased also lost her husband in the same fashion few months ago in Taraku.

According to our source, the deceased, before her untimely death had identified four officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, as the murderers of her late husband, Chia Tyoor who was also killed in a bizarre manner.

The fingered murders of her late husband have been scheduled to face trial later this month in Makurdi.

The Chairman of Gwer local government area, Dr David Maor, said the remains of the mother has been deposited at the Local Government General Hospital while her son was receiving treatment at the intensive care unit of the NKST clinic at Taraku.

PoliticsGov Wada Rejects Treatment Abroad by emmatony(op): 7:26am On Dec 30, 2012
Contrary to insinuations, Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State may not be flown abroad for the treatment of the injuries he sustained in the accident involving his convoy on  Friday.

Doctors at the hospital where the governor was receiving treatment hinted, yesterday, that Wada rejected the option of flying him abroad for further treatment after undergoing what was described as inter-locking nail surgery on his thigh broken in the crash.

The surgery, which lasted two hours, was said to have been successful.

Spokesman for the governor, Mr Jacob Edi, echoed the doctors position when he said his principal was stable.
“I saw His Excellency after the unfortunate accident. He has been stabilised since last night (Friday). I spoke with him and he shook my hands. It was after he stabilised that he was flown to Abuja,”Edi told Sunday Vanguard.

The governor was said to have suffered a broken thigh among other injuries when his vehicle ran into a ditch after a burst tyre on Friday afternoon at Emi Woro village, about 12 kilometers to Lokoja, the state capital.
His ADC died while his driver reportedly escaped unhurt.

The wrecked car after the accident.
Wada was returning to Lokoja from Kogi State University where he attended a function when the crash occurred.

The governor was rushed to the Kogi State Specialist, Lokoja where he was treated before he was taken to Cedar Crest Hospital, Abuja  for further treatment.

Vice President Namadi Sambo; Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State; and a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national chairman, Alhaji Ahmadu  Ali; were among those who visited the Abuja hospital to see the injured Wada  yesterday.

The Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Felix Ogodengbe, who spoke for the doctors handling the governor’s treatment, confirmed, yesterday, that Wada suffered a broken thigh among other injuries.

Ogedengbe said the governor ruled out the option of being flown abroad for further treatment of his injuries after a two-hour  operation on the thigh on Friday night.

He stated: “When  the governor was brought in at 8pm (on Friday),  we were told he was involved in a car accident and we checked him and explained the nature of his injuries to him. We also told him about our ability to manage the injuries. He had a broken thigh and he was taken to the theatre. The governor has since stabilized and he had a nice night; he said he would not be taken abroad for treatment because he has confidence in our capacity to manage him. There is no immediate need to fly him abroad.”

The medical director could, however, not  state the possible date when the patient would be discharged, saying Wada needed time to recuperate.

He said, “The governor is quite happy to take treatment here; the treatment is on-going. He needs some days in the hospital and I can’t give a date of discharge now.”

Abuja hospital where Gov Wada had surgery.
Findings at the hospital indicated that the surgical procedure performed on  Wada  would enable him regain the full use of the affected thigh  with interlocking nails.

The use of the interlocking nails procedure, according to medical experts, entails intramedullary pin secured in position by proximal and distal transfixing screws which engage the bone to the nail to provide axial bending and torsional stability.

Meanwhile, Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State, yesterday, prayed God to grant Wada quick recovery even as he urged Nigerians to also pray for the governor.

Orji, who described the accident as “very sad and shocking”, also commiserated with the family of the Kogi governor’s ADC, who died in the accident.

The Abia governor, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Ugochukwu Emezue, lamented the death of the ADC.

PoliticsPRESIDENCY 2015: How Buhari, Govs Plan To Stop Jonathan by emmatony(op): 6:46am On Dec 28, 2012
By Soni Daniel, Regional Editor, North & Gabriel Ewepu

ABUJA—Nigerian opposition political parties and second term governors on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP are working from different angles to stop the second term aspiration of President Goodluck Jonathan, it emerged yesterday.

While the opposition parties are fine-tuning plans to crystallize into a single party in the first half of next year, the PDP governors are equally working to stop President Jonathan from achieving a second term for reasons Vanguard learnt, yesterday, were based on self-survival instincts.

Vanguard reliably gathered that unlike in the past when political parties opted for merger with their identities intact, the major opposition parties in the country were ready to shed their identities and confront the ruling party as a coalition.

Plan to form strong coalition to upstage PDP

The parties, which have been meeting frequently on merger talks, are said to have agreed to forgo their individual identities and work as a team toremove the PDP from the seat of power it has been occupying since the return of civilian rule in 1999.

The arrowheads of the new talks-Gen Muhammadu Buhari of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, and the leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, have been strategizing along with other opposition figures to ensure the emergence of a mega party that can give the PDP a good fight in the next poll.

President Goodluck Jonathan and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd)
National Publicity Secretary of the CPC, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, confirmed to Vanguard that there was a concrete arrangement by the opposition to get its acts right with a view to showing the PDP the way out in 2015.

Fashakin explained that the opposition parties had accepted to fill the yawning leadership gap created by alleged failure of the PDP administration in the last 13 years to provide effective governance that could give hope to Nigerians by coming together to work for the nation.

All opposition parties will merge — CPC

The CPC spokesman said:  “Yes, all the opposition parties will coalesce into a big party. We shall all lose our identities and probably our jobs after assuming the identity of the new party.

“The need to salvage the nation from the precipitous rulership of the PDP is the cause of the initiative. Hopefully, this will emerge early next year.

“Indeed, we have crossed the rubicon and our minds are set on the merger.”
Only on Wednesday, a chieftain of the All Nigeria Peoples Party and former Yobe State Governor, Senator Abba Bukar Ibrahim, had boasted that the major opposition parties were set to float a new party in March next year.

Ibrahim, who is a member of the ANPP’s Contact Committee for the merger talks, said: “Before March 2013, we are all going to reach an accord on the merger. From all indications, the parties are looking forward to forming a totally new party where all opposition parties would come together as one entity.

“The plan appears to be more popular than any other arrangement and I believe there is sufficient time to register a new party,” the lawmaker said.

Governors ready to stop Jonathan

The governors on their part, it was learnt last night while shadowing the merger talks, are also preparing to stop Dr. Jonathan from achieving a second term using their command of the majority of electors at the PDP convention.

Giving reasons for the determination of the governors, one source privy to the development said:
“It would be unwise for any of the governors to leave office with Jonathan still in power given what is turning out to be his ruthlessness. If the governors leave him behind, every one of them that has offended him would find himself in prison within weeks of Jonathan getting a second term,” a source working with one of the potential presidential aspirants still working in the shadows said yesterday.

The source disclosed that the governors like the potential presidential aspirants have decided to give the president a false sense of security and would only manifest themselves shortly before the presidential election.

Should the plan of the governors to stop the president in the PDP fail, they would then use the platform of the merged political party to  confront the president in 2015.

The National Publicity Secretary of the ANPP, Mr. Emmanuel Eneukwu, expressed satisfaction with the way the opposition parties in the merger arrangement were carrying on with the plan, saying that it would help to achieve the desired political result.

PDP afraid of merger talks — ANPP

The ANPP spokesman noted that the merger talks were giving the ruling PDP sleepless nights because of “its monumental failure” to provide basic needs for Nigerians.

He said: “PDP has become very unpopular among Nigerians because they have not performed and President Goodluck Jonathan is busy giving excuses on that. Nigerians are tired of the failure of the PDP and are ready to join the new move to build a new Nigeria of their dream come 2015,” Eneukwu boasted.

But the PDP has dismissed the opposition in Nigeria as incongruent and incapable of upstaging it from power.

The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, said that the PDP was the only party that could bring about the needed development and unity of Nigeria.

Indications have emerged that authorities of the Nigerian Army Garrison headquarters in Abuja, foiled suicide plots by the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram to bomb strategic places within the Federal Capital Territory during the Christmas/New Year celebrations.

Vanguard gathered that two drums loaded with several sizes of cans including those of vegetable oils and palm oil converted to Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDS), about six AK 47 rifles and timing materials were recovered from the hideout of the plotters.

NERC Petitions Presidency over Wamakko’s Alleged Assault of PHCN Worker
29 Nov 2012

Governor of Sokoto State, Dr. Aliyu Wamakko
By Tobi Soniyi and Chineme Okafor
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has written to President Goodluck Jonathan, urging him to initiate a full-fledged investigation into the alleged assault of three officials of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) by the Governor of Sokoto State, Dr. Aliyu Wamakko.
NERC also requested in a petition to the president that was also copied to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Minister of State for Power, management of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC), the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Chairman, Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) and Director General, State Security Service (SSS), for a conciliatory statement from Wamakko that will assuage the anger of electricity workers and other stakeholders in the sector.
According to the content of the letter, which was signed by the Chairman of NERC, Dr. SamAmadi, and obtained by THISDAY Wednesday in Abuja, the alleged act by Wamakko was an unfortunate abuse on the fundamental human rights of the three PHCNofficials and could upset the progress of the Federal Government’s reform exercise in the power sector.
Amadi thus, asked President Jonathan to advise governors of states in the country to desist from conduct that violates the rights of electricity workers in their various states as this may lead to the termination of electricity services in the states.
He added that as the country transmits into aprivate sector-managed power sector, such display of lawless acts could trigger unwholesome chain reactions from operators in the sector.
The letter partly read: “I write to inform Your Excellency that on Saturday, October 20,2012, the Business Manager of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) Gwiwa business unit Sokoto, M. L. Osigwe and two other staff of the business unit, Malam Isyaku Dauran (Officer 2 electrical) and Malam Nuruddeen Mohammed (Staff 1 lines)were allegedly assaulted by the Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko.
The governor was not happy that the 2.5MVA, 33/11 KV transformer in his hometown of Wamakko in Sokoto State has failed even after he provided funds to PHCN for the provision of the transformer. M. L. Osigwe and his team alleged that in a stage of rage the governor used a koboko/horse whip to flog him and asked his mobile policesecurity details to beat him to the state of unconsciousness.”
He further stated: “As a result of the incident, the National Union of Electricity Workers called on their members to lay down their tools and embark on a strike, thiseventually plunged Sokoto and its environs into darkness.
We want to inform Your Excellency that as a commission, we have directed that power should be restored immediately to Sokoto because innocent Nigerians should not be made to suffer as a result of the action of one individual.”
“Your Excellency, it is quite unfortunate that a governor of a state will take the law into his hands and descend to the level of assaulting a staff of a utility company that serves the people of his state. We want to use this medium to kindly request Your Excellency to advise governors of the states to desist from conduct that violates the rights of electricity workers in the states as this may lead to the termination of electricity services in the states.
“Furthermore, Your Excellency may advise the Governor of Sokoto State to issue conciliatory statement that will assuage the anger of electricity workers and other stakeholders in the sector,” Amadi explained.
While requesting for an investigation on the alleged incidence, he said: “Your Excellency may consider directing the Inspector Generalof Police to investigate circumstances leading to such an ugly incident involving mobile policemen assigned to the Governor of Sokoto State.
We wish to emphasise that as we enter into a private electricity market such lawless actions can lead to major crisis in the sector and drastically affect adversely Mr. President’s bold reforms of the sector.”
