Sir Sean Connery has died at the age of 90, his family has said.

The Scottish actor was best known for his portrayal of James Bond, being the first to bring the role to the big screen and appearing in seven of the spy thrillers.

Sir Sean died peacefully in his sleep, while in the Bahamas, having been "unwell for some time", his son said.

His acting career spanned decades and won an Oscar in 1988 for his role as an Irish cop in The Untouchables.

Sir Sean's other films included The Hunt for Red October, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and The Rock.

Jason Connery said his father "had many of his family who could be in the Bahamas around him" when he died overnight.

He said: "We are all working at understanding this huge event as it only happened so recently, even though my dad has been unwell for some time.

"A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had as an actor."

Sir Sean was largely regarded as being the best actor to have played 007 in the long-running franchise, often being named as such in polls.

He was knighted by the Queen at Holyrood Palace in 2000. In August, he celebrated his 90th birthday.

He was a long-time supporter of Scottish independence, saying in interviews in the run-up to the 2014 referendum that he might return from his Bahamas home to live in Scotland if it voted to break away from the rest of the UK.

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: "I was heartbroken to learn this morning of the passing of Sir Sean Connery. Our nation today mourns one of her best loved sons.

Manchester United earned slightly more money than champions Manchester City from the Premier League last season, despite City's record-breaking campaign.

United, who finished second, received £149.77m, £328,491 more than City.

United were paid more because two more of their matches were shown live in the UK - which meant their facilities fee was £2.26m higher.

In total Premier League clubs received £2.42bn, £2.1m more than last season.

Jose Mourinho's United were shown live on UK television 28 times this season, the same number as Liverpool and Arsenal, with City screened 26 times.

A club's total payment is made up of UK broadcast revenue - of which 50% is shared equally between clubs, 25% is shared based on the number of live UK television matches, and 25% is based on league position - central commercial revenues and international broadcasting revenues.

City received £38.63m for winning the league, £1.93m more than second-placed United.

US country music singer Don Williams - who enjoyed great success with his easy-going singing style - has died aged 78.

The Texan native passed away after a short illness, his publicist said.
Williams began his solo career in 1971, amassing 17 number one country hits.
His songs, such as Gypsy Woman and Tulsa Time, were covered by many other singers - including Eric Clapton and Pete Townshend. Williams was known as the gentle giant of country music.
Other hits included You're My Best Friend, I Believe in You and Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good.
In 2010, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

i would really love to know where the person who posted the ad on benue state got it from. i live in makurdi, the state capital of benue state and nothing of that nature ever took place in that state. as a matter of fact, 90 percent of the people that live in benue are christains and that sort of thing talked about in yhe ad is not possible.
