PS: Religion and THE search for God is NOT the problem. People are the problem. IF we do away with religion, there will BE something else to fight about. Also, note: our quest for science, education and technology is search and quest for meaning in life--in a way, is also a search for God.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is the partial or total removal of the clictoris and/or modification of other parts of the female urinary/genital parts for nonmedical reasons . FGM is usually carried out on girls between infancy to 15 years of age.

FGM has been classified into four (4) categories by the World Health Organization (WHO) VIZ:
1. Clitoridectomy: This is the partial or total removal of the clitoris.

2. Excision: This is the partial total removal of the clitoris and the labia minor a (the inner folds of the vulva)

3. Infibulation: This is the narrowing of the vaginal opening by cutting and repositioning of the labia minora and/or labia majora.

4. Piercing, Pricking, Incising, Scrapping and cauterising the genital area for nonmedical reasons.

As archaic as this practice is, it is still practised in several parts of the world with Africa having the largest percentage (countries where it is practised)

Though FGM has been criminalize in several countries by the passage of prohibitory laws, it has continued to grow unabated as the punishment for it is not severe.
Counties where FGM is criminalized
FGM violates a number of rights of girls/women, hence the need to enact laws against it and proscribe it as illegal. Though there is no intended harm by those who organize FGM , its demaging physical, sexual and psychological effects make it an act of violence against women and girls.

Several conventions including The Convention on the Rights of the Child, The convention on the elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, etc recognises FGM ad an activity/practice that violate the rights of the girl child.

Several African countries have passed laws as FGM.
1. Benin Republic
2. Burkina Faso
3. Central African Republic.
4. Chad.
5. Côte d'ivoire.
6.Djouti.
7. Egypt
8. Eritrea
9. Ethiopia
10. Ghana.
11. Guinea
12. Kenya
13. Mauritania
14. Niger
15. Senegal.
16. South Africa
17. Tanzania
18. Togo.
Nigeria only signed the into law, a bill criminalising FGM in 2015.
All this countries in Africa recognise FGM as as a crime and as such can land you fine, 3 months to life imprisonment.
