Literature / Lagos: A Country In Nigeria by empexy(m): 1:08am On Dec 19, 2012
What does the Chairman of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola, want for Lagosians? These days, his actions make me think that he doesn’t want many people in his domain.

Lagos as it is known, is that heart of commercialisation; every damn business that you can think of can be found here. It is a hustle state.

Many migrate from the thickest of all villages down here for greener pastures, which is ironic though, because the grass ain’t that greener here but either ways, they just prefer Lagos.

As a kid that didn’t grow up in Lagos, I heard stories of this populous city and imagined all sort of things. But on getting here, it’s been over 12 years now and honestly, life here is on the fast lane (high BP levels).

I’ve been to states like Owerri, Osun and I’d say that living there is worth every penny, as there are many unexploited opportunities. But no one cares mehn, Lagos is the way forward.

Having said so much, it seems the state government has seen the desperate heart of Lagos loving Nigerians and has decided to give people that second thought on why they migrate to the hustle state.

I may not know the “real” motive behind the registration and issuing of identity cards to Lagos inhabitants, which is to commence in 2013, but according to a report, it is aimed at “providing better governance and to control the influx of ILLEGAL CITIZENS”.

Illegal citizens? When did citizens of a country become illegal citizens of another state within the same country? Or is the state government trying to pass a coded message (go back to your villages)?

I accept that keeping track of the inhabitants of a state is a wonderful idea, as every advanced country does that. But is that what my dear state government should be worried about at this point in time? Have they finished providing for my basic needs (employment, light, security of life and property, shelter etc.)

Last year, the state government restricted the operation of commercial bikers from 8pm and that was backed up with the excuse that robbery cases have been facilitated by them. To me, it was a reasonable decision.
Just weeks ago, another law to totally ban these riders from major roads was implemented with no justification except for the clichéd robbery cases.

To what should I owe this law? Since its implementation, life in the state which has not been so easy, got worse. I mean, going out on a normal day without your own car, has gotten to the level of “fatigue” (the military meaning). Some okada riders who can’t afford to secure any other jobs, have been rendered jobless.

I would like to remind the state government that Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution states that, “Every citizen of Nigeria is entitled to move freely throughout Nigeria and to reside in any part thereof…”.

From the aforementioned section of the constitution, it is clear that okada riders and citizens are at freedom to move throughout a state/country. So it can be said that the ban is an infringement of rights.

Besides the ban on bikers and the soon to be introduced registration of citizens, Lagos has got more uniform men than Tolu Complex at Ajegunle. It’s like almost every offence you can think of has its own uniform men. LASTMA, VIO, Road Safety, KAI, LAWMA (yeah, they’ve got their own fair share of uniform power), the Men In Black (Police) etc. Are some of the uniform men operating in the hustle state. I even heard there are now anti one-way agents. O_o

Well, there’s nothing wrong with having too many security agents in a state, but the question is, how effective are they?

I know my dear governor wants the best for us but I would like him to calm down. He should look on the bright side of having lots of people in his state. Below are few of the numerous benefits;

– a hotspot for any business activity
– an investment haven for companies
– more people to pay tax, therefore generating more income, and many more…

Also, when the federal government is allocating money every month, he’ll get a bigger share, which we all know that not all the cash will be spent on the state . So why complain of immigrants? Just saying
By the way, if the state government really needs to ban anything…why not touts/agberos. Thank you!
Events / Upcoming Event: Mad King Of Ijudiya by empexy(m): 3:32pm On Dec 14, 2012
If you saw "The five maids of fadaka" (a stage play which featured big nollywood names like nobert young, gloria young, bimbo manuel, rachel oniga, carol king and iyke ikechukwu among others), then the "Mad king of ijudiya" is with twice the excitement.
Mad King of Ijudiya is a christmas play with a difference. It is an adaptation of a christmas story featuring a rich blend of folklore, traditional dance and music; transporting the audience to a typical african village setting.
The story is about an awed King – King Ero ba ni’se, the great king of Ijudiya, who in the discovery of a rival within his territory, ‘flips his lid’ completely and goes to an outrageous extent to prove that he is the one ordained by the gods to rule. Even more annoying to the king is the discovery that the new entrant on the scene is a mere child.
In order to eliminate the encroachment on his sovereignty by this rather strange opposition, ero ba ni’se adopts different methods to get his competitor out of the way.
Nollywood stars to grace the stage include Joke Silva, Sequn Arinze, Gloria Young, Iyke ikechukwu, Monalisa Chinda, Florence Uwaleke and many more.

Venue: agip hall, muson centre

Politics / Ban On Alcohol And Prostitution Stills Stands In Kano by empexy(m): 4:12pm On Jul 27, 2011
Kano state government has reinforced the law, which prohibits prostitution and alcohol sales or consumption. Deputy Governor of the state, Abdullahi Ganduje, said in a statement signed by his Director of Press and Public Relations, Bala Dawakinkudu.

The law, which was first introduced during the first tenure of Rabiu Kwankwaso, the then governor of Kano state, from 1999 to 2003, was aimed at sanitising the society and ensuring good behaviour.

Ganduje assured that the present administration would extend full support to Hisbah, the law enforcement agency of the Islamic legal code in order to ensuring its compliance throughout the state. He said any alcoholic beverages intercepted will be destroyed as stipulated by the law, adding that the state government will strengthen the existing Shariah law.

About 96,000 bottles of assorted brands of alcoholic beverages has been impounded in the state, emphasising that the government would continue its clampdown on prostitutes in the state, Ganduje said.

He also spoke on the state's setback on the Qu’ranic recitation competitions, known as Musabuqah; stating that the state's government was making plans to revive it.

The Deputy Governor, assured that the competition would be established across the 44 local government areas in the state.

“Kano occupies a leading position in the world in Qu’ranic competition and government would not fold its arms to watch such an unfortunate development affects the progress of Musabuqah in the state," He said.

Politics / Boy, 6, Rescued From Collapsed Building 24hours Later by empexy(m): 4:24pm On Jul 07, 2011
A six-year-old boy was pulled out of the collapsed building at Idumota area of Lagos State alive more than 24 hours after the accident.

The boy, whose identity could not be immediately ascertained, was pulled out of the rubble with just a few bruises on his body.

A source at the scene, however, said that the parents of the boy were among those who died when the building collapsed.

As at Thursday morning, the number of casualties had risen to 18 as more bodies were pulled out of the rubble by volunteers.

Meanwhile, mixed reactions have continued to trail the incident, which happened at about 11.30 pm on Tuesday.

Residents are pointing accusing fingers at the Lagos State Building Control Agency for its failure to bring owners and developers of collapsed buildings to book.

They also blamed accommodation seekers for occupying such houses after they had been marked for demolition.

Dare Oluwalogbon, a civil servant, blamed political leaders for using their positions to stop the demolition of marked buildings. “It is shocking to know that immediately such houses are marked for demolition, the owners quickly run to their relatives in power and the rest is history,” he said.

Shina Obafemi, a plumber, said the failure of the government to have a clear cut policy on building collapse, in spite of its frequent recurrence, was a major contributor. “Government on its part has never come out with a decisive policy for punishing offenders, in spite of casualties each time the incident occurred,” he said.

He urged the authority to formulate the right laws and policies, through the executive and the state houses of assembly to punish offenders.

Hajia Ibrahim Obashola, a woman leader, described the menace of building collapse as deadlier than any celebrated disease such as HIV/AIDS, and warned accommodation seekers to exercise restraint in choosing the type of accommodation they rent.

“I think the number of death as a result of building collapse is becoming alarming and accommodation seekers should be wary of the type of house they occupy,” she said. “This, I think, will put such building owners or developers to task by doing the right thing,” she said.

Politics / "i Watched As My Husband Was Killed And Burnt" by empexy(m): 10:11am On Jul 02, 2011
A widow, Veronica Ejiofor, resident of Azare in Bauchi State, said on Friday that she watched “helplessly” as her husband of 19 years was being killed and his corpse burnt to ashes.

She was testifying at the public sitting of the post election violence committee, headed by its Chairman, Dr Ahmed Lemu.

Ejiofor narrated how on April 18, before the release of the result of the presidential election, her husbandordered her to vacate the children and relocate to the Azare Divisional Police Headquarters, when irate youths were chanting war songs.

She said that she immediately relocated to the police barracks in a car, while her husband, who was driving another car, ran into a group of irate youths.

She said her husband, who was driving toward the police barracks, made an attempt to escape, but the irate youths got hold of him, stabbed him to death, before burning his corpse to ashes.

“After killing my husband, who they nicknamed Dan-Azare, because he was born in the area, they put tyres on his neck and set him on fire,” she said. “My children and I became helpless. They later went to our house and set it ablaze in spite of the presence of policemen.

We took refuge at the police station. The policemen failed to quell the riot, while the youths set bonfire at the entrance of the station, with the policemen watching.”

The widow suggested that the security of the area should be taken over by mobile police officers and soldiers.

Several women that were present at the panel broke down into tears as the visibly traumatised widow recounted her story.

In May, Daily Times had reported about Mrs. Joy Anozie, who till date has yet to find her husband, who went missing during the post-election violence, also in Bauchi.

Business / South African Firm Finalises Sale Of Multi-links by empexy(m): 4:48pm On Jun 30, 2011
Telkom South Africa Ltd., Africa’s largest fixed-line operator, is set to sell off troubled Multi-links. It has secured a deal that entails the sale of the CDMA network to Helios Towers Nigeria for $10 million.

Telkom SA took ownership of Multi-links in 2007, and has since spent 9.8 billion rand ($1.44 billion) on Multi- Links, which includes the $410 million cost of buying the business.

In 2010, Telkom declared it would stop funding the Nigerian-based CDMA, after it declared it had made no profit since acquiring the business. In three years, it had racked up R659m in losses.

It later reversed its decision; “I know there‘s been a lot of money spent on Multilinks but to shut it down now would be to buy high and sell low,” the former Acting Group Chief Executive, Telkom, Mr. Jeffery Hedberg said.

Multi-links had earlier been sued by Helios for a $252 million broken contract, after it stopped paying Helios for the leasing of mobile-phone towers in Nigeria three years into a 10-year contract. This led to a failed contract between Visafone and Multi-links; Visafone had attempted a $52 million purchase of the company, but failed after terms of the deal weren’t met. The sale to Visafone depended on conditions including renegotiation of a contract with Helios Towers Nigeria.

Telkom stated that operational funding to Multi-Links will be continued so as to facilitate completion of the transaction. As a matter of fact, a recent decision to stop funding to Multi-Links had been reversed by the preceding announcement.

Another stipulation stands in this deal which provides for sharing profits if and when Helio Towers resells Multi-Links within the next three years.

Politics / Army Cracks Down On Errant Soldiers by empexy(m): 10:48am On Jun 28, 2011
The Nigerian Army has urged members of the public to alert the authorities anytime they see a soldier misbehaving in public.

This is coming on the heels of the dismissal of Lance Corporal Ayodeji Sunday, formerly attached to the Nigerian Army Workshop, Ikeja, for flouting the state traffic laws last week Thursday.

Ayodeji was involved in a fracas with officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and the Task Force on the Environment when he was stopped by the officers for plying the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) Lane reserved for state owned buses.

The soldier had resisted attempts to impound his car and engaged the traffic officials in a scuffle that injured two.

Ayodeji was consequently court marshalled and dismissed from the Nigerian Army after he was found guilty of misdemeanour. Army authorities also handed him over to the Task Force on the Environment for prosecution.

Maj. Gen. Kenneth Minimah, the General Officer Commanding 81 Division Nigeria Army, said the army will not tolerate any indiscipline from his officers as the dismissal of the erring officer will serve as a deterrent to others who would want to take the laws into their hands.

“The Nigerian Army is a human organisation and we have human beings as soldiers," he said. "As human beings, we have our share of black eggs. It is not a perfect organisation, and no other organisation is perfect either. We would pursue better civil/military relations to its logical end and as it is required by the books.

While we at the hierarchy mean good for the system, there are some too at the lower cadre who do not portend good for the system. The soldier who was involved in the BRT offence the other day has been dismissed from service and he would eventually be handed over to the Lagos State task force for prosecution.”

Minimah advised officers to abide by all civil laws as the army uniform should not be used for reckless behaviour by officers. “That is a far-reaching warning for others who may want to take the law into their hands and breach the laws of the state, we will not condone that," he said. "The Nigerian Army is a professional organisation. Whoever disobeys the laws of Lagos State would be dealt with appropriately irrespective of who you are or where you belong. The Nigeria Army is subordinate to the constitution of Nigeria and the state laws.”

The general also urged members of the public to call the Nigerian Army if they see any soldier misbehaving in public. He gave the  phone numbers to contact as:

The Commander 9th Brigade Cantonment, Ikeja  – 08023101918

Politics / Lagos Youths Seek Government Protection, As Rape Cases Increase by empexy(m): 11:39am On Jun 26, 2011
Mr Abdullahi Olajide, a member of the Lagos State Youth Parliament, yesterday urged the state government to pay more attention to the rising incidents of rape in the state.

Olajide said that the appeal became imperative because youths were mostly affected by the menace.

The Lagos State Youth Parliament, which normally initiates mock legislations, is an initiative of the state’s Ministry of Youths, Sports and Social Development.

The parliament, which started sitting in 2010, grooms young people and prepares them for future legislative assignments.

Olajide, who represents Ajeromi Ifelodun Constituency, said that rape was the most traumatic menace confronting youths in the state.

He stressed the need to sensitise youths to dangers of rape, adding that they should be conscious of the extant laws that could protect the victims.

"Rape has been a major menace that is really affecting our youths in the state today and we will tackle it at the next Youth Parliament’s meeting.

"Almost on a daily basis, you find on the pages of national newspapers reports about rape cases. The same thing goes for TV as well as the Internet and most of the victims are youths," he said.

Besides, Olajide urged the state government to listen to views of the youth legislators, stressing that issues discussed by the Youth Parliament transcended mere mock legislation.

"We urge the Lagos State Government to give more power to the Youth Parliament, so that we will be able to come up with innovative ideas like sponsoring bills to the state House of Assembly," he said.

Olajide noted that the dearth of potency of the laws made by the Youth Parliament had been a setback to varying development issues examined by the parliament.

He also urged the Ministry of Youths, Sports and Social Development to be more liberal, while reducing the restrictions placed on the role of the Youth Parliament in the state.

Business / Ikeja District Owes Phcn 12 Billion by empexy(m): 12:22am On Jun 26, 2011
The Power Holding Company of  Nigeria (PHCN), has said that its consumers in Ikeja distribution zone are owing debt of over N12 billion as at May this year.

According to the zone’s Chief Executive Officer, Chris Akamnonu, residents and business entities in the area are the company's biggest debtors .

Akamnonu noted that customers' refusal to pay their bills is one of the constraints to the company's effort to achieving stable and efficient electricity supply .

He said that the management has made it compulsory to attend to any reported fault and replacement of transformers, and that the zone is not interested in disconnecting lines due to the debt, but would not hesitate to do so if they failed to pay up.

"We implore customers in Ikeja distribution zone to pay their bills promptly as the zone recorded over N12 billion debt profiles as at May 2011 which is a huge sum," he said. "The bulk of the debt was owed by residential, commercial and industrial consumers which affect operations of the zone."

In bid to recover the debts, Akamnonu said the management of  the business unit of the company has sent notifications to  customers owing N50,000 and above.

Akamnonu, who noted that vandalisation of PHCN facilities has reduced due to community policing and support from security agencies, appealed to residents to report any act of such societal vice.

Business / Fg Increases Electricity Tariffs by empexy(m): 10:45am On Jun 24, 2011
The Federal government has increased electricity tariff by N1.50 per kilowatt hour, Nigeria Electricity Commission (NERC) announced in a statement on Thursday.

The hike means consumers would pay N10.00 instead of the current N8.50 charged per kilowatt hour.

Mrs. Maryam Yaya Abubakar, the head of the commission who issued the statement, said the new tariff would become operational from July 1st.

“The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on Tuesday informed chief executive officers of electricity distribution companies that the last schedule of the 2008/2013 regime of Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) would be operational from July 1, 2011,” the statement reads. “This development will see to a marginal increase in kilowatt hour of electricity from N8.50 to N10.00 from that date.”

NERC, however, warned Chief Executive Officers of electricity distribution companies to ensure improved service in the delivery of power. The commission threatened to be “resolute and uncompromising in ensuring compliance and imposing sanctions on chief executive officers and managers of companies that fall short of the required standards.”

Dr. Sam Amadi, NERC chairman, said “the marginal increase was approved in 2008.”

Politics / Cbn Licences First Islamic Bank In Nigeria by empexy(m): 10:29am On Jun 22, 2011
Jaiz Bank International Plc has been granted approval to operate as an Islamic bank by the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN).

It is the first bank to receive such approval in the country. The bank was nonetheless given a period of six months to comply with its terms to get a final license by CBN otherwise the agreement would be terminated.

The CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, according to reports, gave this hint at an Islamic Banking Forum in Dakar, Senegal.

“The Central Bank had given an implicit approval to Jaiz Bank, the country's first Islamic bank," he said. "Jaiz Bank has six months to comply with the Central Bank's terms to get a final licence.”

Islamic Banking, otherwise called Sharia Banking, is a non-interest type of banking that is different from the conventional banking in so many ways. It is based on Islamic laws of economics and works in such a way that follows certain rules and regulations.

This form of banking also proscribes usury, trading in financial risk (gambling) and investing in such businesses that are against the general principles of ethics.

In line with its plans to entrench Islamic Banking culture in the country, the CBN had early this year rolled out its guidelines on Sharia governance for Islamic banking.

Part of the guidelines stipulates that compliance with the Sharia principles is a critical element of non-interest banking and finance.

Update - IGP the target

More details have emerged on the bomb blast.

Two days ago, a new instruction was issued to the gate detail to the effect that all non-official vehicles were to park in the car park on the right of the entry gate.

This morning, a vehicle (Police sources tell us that the bomb was placed in a Mercedes Benz 190) attempted to follow the IGP into Force HQ, but was stopped and ordered to proceed to the right-hand side car park, and a traffic officer was directed to show him the way. Even before reaching the car park, the car exploded killing the driver and the officer taking him to the car park.

Crime / Police Nabs Two With Human Skulls by empexy(m): 11:13am On Jun 16, 2011
The police in Taraba State, on Wednesday, paraded one Umaru Ali for possessing six human skulls, a single barrel gun and a native pot.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Chutua Onu, told journalists in Jalingo that the suspect was arrested by a police team led by Ben Sunday, a corporal.

Onu added that one Umaru Hamadu, an accomplice of Ali, on sighting the police, fired a shot at them but was later arrested after sustaining injuries from the exchange of fire. She said that Hamadu later died while receiving treatment and that Ali would soon be charged to court.

In a similar incident, another suspect, Aondowase Thomas, 22, of Baka Village in Bali Local Government Area, was also paraded with a human skull and a human tongue.

Thomas told journalists that he inherited the skull and tongue from his late brother who died in 2005. He said that his brother, before his death, told him that he got the parts from the Tiv/Jukum crisis of 2001.

The police boss said all the suspects would be charged to court soon.

Computers / Facebook Looses 100, 000 Users by empexy(m): 4:50pm On Jun 14, 2011
The trend was also seen in the US with six million people choosing to stop using the social-networking site, with the number of users dropping from 155.2million to 149.4million. Canada, Russia and Norway all also saw drops in May.

The decline is being blamed on the site reaching its natural saturation point in some countries.

Overall, however, the site is continuing to grow and now has almost 700million users worldwide, although growth did slow for a second month in a row.

The website Inside Facebook, which obtained the figures, reports that most new users continue to come from countries that were relatively late in adopting the site.

Commenting on its findings, a statement declared: ‘By the time Facebook reaches around 50 per cent of the total population in a given country (plus or minus, depending on internet access rates in that country), growth generally slows to a halt, as we’ve noted before.

‘So far, Facebook has been able to make up stalls and losses with big gains in heavily-populated developing countries like Mexico, Brazil, India and Indonesia.

‘But how much further can it go if it is to reach its goal of 1billion monthly active users? At least without getting into China — a move that as we and many others have noted, could both give it access to hundreds of millions of users and compromise its reputation in the US and many other countries around the world.’

Earlier this month, Facebook was criticised for introducing its face recognition software, which suggests people’s names to tag in photos without their permission.

A number of privacy groups have threatened legal challenges over the way in which the site collects the private information of its users.

Politics / Bankole's Probe May Lead To Tambuwal's Arrest by empexy(m): 4:41pm On Jun 14, 2011
The continuous probing of Dimeji Bankole’s activities as speaker of the House of Representatives may soon lead to the arrest of Aminu Tambuwal, the current speaker.

Tambuwal is said to have benefited from some of the monies the former speaker is being charged for misappropriating. The current speaker was an ally of the former. He was also the Deputy Chief Whip of the House and was listed as part of the beneficiaries of the loot for which Bankole is currently held for.

Idowu Bakare, the media aide to the former speaker, had in a statement stated that the N10 billion loan which his boss was held for was shared hierarchically amongst the members with the leaders taking a loin share.

He said Bankole claimed to have gotten monthly allocations of N100 million for two quarters, while his deputy, Usman Nafada, who was charged along side Bankole in another fresh charge of N40 billion loan scam on Monday, received N80 million monthly for the same period.

Tambuwal, who was the deputy chief whip in that time, got N54.5 million monthly from the said amount. His current Deputy, Emeka Ihedioha, who was his boss as the chief whip of the previous House got N55 million monthly.

Although the rest of the members of the leadership team in the previous house have been questioned by the EFCC, the current speaker and his deputy are yet to be invited for questioning.

Femi Babafemi, the spokesman of EFCC, however, said the commission is not calling in the remaining leadership members of the Bankole led House, yet, because the buck stops at Bankole’s table.

The EFCC, on Sunday, arrested Nafada over allegations of corruption while in office.

While addressing journalists in the green carpet chamber of the House of Representatives on Monday, the current deputy speaker rebuffed comments alluding to the scam and their preparedness to deal with looming arrest which may ruin the speakers renewed pledge to transparency and accountability.

Both the speaker and his deputy have limited immunity, restricted only within the doors of the chambers of the House of Representatives.

Bankole was arrested a few days to the end of his tenure. The anti graft agency has hinted it may invite the current speaker and his deputy for questioning “if need be.”
