Politics / Lagos Schools Where Students Sit On The Floor & Under Trees by empexy(m): 2:15pm On Jun 14, 2013
Many pupils of Saviour’s Primary School, Igbeleyi-Alakuko, a suburb of Lagos, were on Thursday seen seated on the floor as their teachers taught them during school hours.

A fight had broken out between two of the pupils on Tuesday, which left one of them with an injured lip that had to be sutured at a nearby hospital.

The fight allegedly resulted from the insufficient furniture in the school, which the affected pupils struggled to use.

Many pupils in Primary four, Primary five and Primary six in the school were seen sitting on the floor due to insufficient furniture in their classrooms.

The problem was more pronounced in the classrooms of Primary six pupils, where in the three arms with over 100 pupils, only 17 chairs and desks were seen.

Some teachers at the school, who did not want their names published for fear of victimisation by the authorities, said that the situation had been the same for some time, despite repeated appeals made to the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) for help.

Kemi Lawal, the Chairman, School Based Management Committee (SBMC) of the school, said that the situation was very bad as many pupils in the school sat on the floor to receive lessons.

She said that SBMC had also appealed to parents to contribute money, so that the problem could be addressed, but that this had yielded no positive result.

“We levied all parents last term – during a parents’ forum – that they pay N200 each to assist us construct chairs and desks; but they are not responding,” she said. “We are pleading with SUBEB and the state government to provide furniture in the school.”

When contacted, Gbolahan Daodu, the Executive Chairman, SUBEB, said that government was aware of the problem, and that effort was being intensified to address it. “We are taking care of various furniture requests in our schools,” she said.

Politics / MKO Abiola’s Last Interview by empexy(m): 10:33pm On Jun 12, 2013
Various activities to mark the 20th anniversary of the annulment of the June 12, 1993, general elections in which presidential aspirant, Moshood Abiola, appeared to be leading at the polls, have commenced. Nigerian Telegraph is in possession of the transcript of the last interview granted by the late statesman.

Excerpts:

BBC: What is happening in your house? Are you being arrested?
MKO: I am being arrested. I am just going out now with the police (MKO and supporters are singing the national anthem)…Hello. There is a large crowd here. I am being escorted out to detention by singing the national anthem.

BBC: Why are they arresting you?
MKO: They are arresting me on an allegation of felony—namely treason or something like that. They are not doing anything, they are just taking me away. Please let me go, you know I am delaying them (police).

BBC: And so where are you? Are you in your car?
MKO: I am in my car now.

BBC: Is it police who are with you in your car or are they escorting you?
MKO: The commissioner of police is in the car with me and my senior wife (Kudirat) is in the car with me

BBC: Why are they letting you talk on the phone to the BBC while they are in the middle of arresting you?
MKO: They have come to arrest me, not to arrest my mouth! (laughs).

BBC: You sound very cheerful about it Chief Abiola?
MKO: Of course (laughing). It is all part of democracy here.

BBC: And you are happy to go to the police and await whatever charges they are going to file against you?
MKO: I am not in any way disturbed by it. Any sacrifice is in order. If it will bring democracy, peace and posterity to Nigeria.*

BBC: Is it possible to speak to the commissioner of police who is with you in the car?
MKO: I don’t know if the commissioner of police is authorised to talk; he cannot talk to the press.

BBC: What is your advice now to your supporters? Many of them we heard a moment ago?

MKO: I told them before I left home to just stay calm. It is very, very, important that they stay calm.

BBC: So you are appealing for calm? You don’t want them to take any direct action in your support?
MKO: NO, NO, NO, NO.

BBC: You still say you are the President of Nigeria; but it is not much good if you are going to be in jail?
MKO: Well……, Mandela was in jail for 27 years; Kenyatta was in jail. I suppose that is one of the qualifications you need in this part of the world. Don’t worry yourself my friend.

Editor’s note: MKO Abiola was never seen in public again.

EFCC = Economic Football Crimes Commission
Politics / EFCC turns FIFA: Match-fixers To Face Efcc’s Wrath by empexy(m): 11:53am On Jun 11, 2013
In an attempt to salvage the reputation of the Nigeria Premier League, the Federal Government says it has concluded plans to deal with match-fixing by setting up a special squad within the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)

Reports of referees being bribed to favour home teams is a recurring complaint in the Nigerian domestic league, where the percentage of home wins is as high as 90.

Last season, Kano Pillars won the League title on the back of just one away victory, and that only on the final day of the season when the League title had been secured.

In 2012, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) slammed a total sum of N30 million fine on Dolphins FC (10 million) and Sunshine Stars (N20 million) for an alleged involvement in match-fixing.

Dolphins’ manager Stanley Eguma, an assistant referee and one Divine Benjamin were given various degrees of punishment by the football body.

In 2009, Zamfara United - a club which was on the verge of relegation after a poor run the entire season – spanked Kaduna United 9-0 on the final day to claim a stay in the Premier League. The win pushed Akwa United, which finished on 48 points but thanks to the 9-0 spanking of Kaduna United fell short on goal difference, to the lower league.

Interestingly, Akwa United gained promotion to the NPL in 2007 after a well executed 13-0 victory over Calabar Rovers.

Angry with the recurring allegations of match-fixing in the country’s top-flight football competition, Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi said the trend must be stopped.

“We are working with the Attorney-General of the Federation to set up a special squad within EFCC to deal with match fixing,” he said on Monday. “Anybody found to be involved in any form will be treated as a criminal and dealt with accordingly.

“We must restore integrity and credibility to the Nigerian League. Fans must go to the stadium not believing that the game has already been fixed in favour of the home team.”

Abdullahi added that major reforms are being planned in conjunction with the League Management Company.

“Our vision for the NPL is inspired by what other countries at similar level of development have achieved with theirs.

“South Africa is regarded as the 6th biggest league in the world. They do not have our population, nor our talent or football history.

“There is no reason they should have the kind of league that they have and Nigeria will be wallowing where we are without a sponsorship (sic). This is unacceptable and is what all of us involved in football should be embarrassed about. It dwells on us in football to reverse this status quo.”

Politics / Ribadu Has Given In To Political Prostitution – Abati by empexy(m): 9:47am On Jun 11, 2013
Reuben Abati, the special adviser to the president on media and publicity, on Monday, faulted Nuhu Ribadu’s claim that Nigeria under President Goodluck Jonathan is a sinking ship.

Abati described Ribadu’s statement as “false, hypocritical and self-serving”, adding that the latter had given in to “political prostitution”, and now had a penchant for making “utterances aimed at improving the electoral fortunes of his new friends and ‘leader’, who he once denounced as a crook not fit to hold public office”.

The President’s media managers, Doyin Okupe and Reuben Abati

“Far from being tyrannical as Ribadu falsely alleged in Kaduna, President Goodluck Jonathan will, as he has consistently done since assuming office, continue to strengthen institutions of democratic governance in Nigeria,” Abati said.

“The president will continue to uphold the fundamental human rights of all Nigerians, including the youths, and protect their rights to elect leaders in free, fair and credible elections.”

It will be recalled that on Saturday in Kaduna, Ribadu had, while delivering a lecture, described Nigeria under Jonathan as a sinking ship in which the yearnings of the masses are being neglected by a tyrannical leadership.

Education / Ogun State Teachers Embark On Strike by empexy(m): 4:03pm On Jun 01, 2013
The Ogun State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has embarked on an indefinite strike over the state government’s failure to pay their peculiar allowances.

The state’s NUT Chairman, Mr. Dare Ilekoya, announced the commencement of the strike. According to him, Ogun was one of the 13 states yet to effect payment of the allowances.

“Teachers in both secondary and primary schools in Ogun should stay at home with effect from June 1,” he ordered.

Ilekoya said that the state government had, in August 2008, signed an agreement with the union to implement an increase of 27.5 percent of their basic salary as peculiar allowance. However, the agreement was implemented between January 2010 and January 2011, after which there was an “abrupt stoppage of the allowance.”

“NUT’s efforts to make the government see reason have not yielded any fruit and, therefore, we cannot continue to remain a laughing stock,” Ilekoya said.

“We are ready to bark and bite until we see that teachers’ demand on the issue of 27.5 percent allowance is actualised in Ogun.”

When contacted, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. John Odebela, said: “Let us wait and see whether they will commence the strike or not. If by Monday, our teachers are not in class, then you can say that teachers are on strike in Ogun.”

Blackberry or Android? It's your choice.

But i wouldn't advice anyone on BB, although it's top notch for communication in Nigeria (if you want to reach a wider audience).

I never liked BB, but thinking of getting one cus of the Nigerian factor. Even my boss thinks it's inappropriate not to have one. Smh!

As for data plans, i heard the Z10 does not have BIS, so my brothers thinking BB is cheaper for data charges, welcome to the world of Android, Apple and symbian users.

As for me, i'm still with Nokia (C7) and loving the damn phone, as it serves all my needs (mails, HD games, HD recording, wireless hotspot, twitter, Facebook etc.) for now.

Romance / Re: Why Some Ladies Remain Single For Life by empexy(m): 10:28am On Apr 22, 2013
@OP well done.
Western culture has destroyed our ladies. Everyone wants to be Nicki, Beyonce; in summary sex icons. No one cares about good morals anymore. Being a virgin has become a thing of shame (what should be a thing of pride).

Sometimes, I feel like weeping when a see some teenage girls of this generation and their IDGAF attitude; But i wouldn't blame them, the elder ones are not good examples. And men are not helping as well. We even help them become worse.

I won't point accusing finger on any gender, the truth is most of us are contributing factors.

I've met a few girls who started up with credible morals but then again end of like the majority.

In short, we all need Jesus and nothing else. He'll guide our discretion.

Scenes from MAD KING OF IJUDIYA

The much anticipated "Mad King of Ijudiya" took centre stage at Agip Hall, Muson Centre, on the 29th and 30th of December, 2012.

It was nothing short of excitement and thrills, as our wonderful audience (comprising of adults, teenagers and children) were treated to a master class of stage performance spiced with colourful costumes, folklore, display of culture, dance and music.

The play was delivered by our very own Nollywood veterans; Segun Arinze, Joke Silva, Monalisa Chinda, Akin Lewis, Gloria Young, Iyke Ikechukwu, Shafi Akinrimisi, Florence Umaleke and a host of other fresh stage performers who exhibited a high sense of professionalism.

Our audience had a lot to say about the show (http://thespianfamilytheatre..com/2013/02/video-mad-king-of-ijudiya.html).

This is what Monalisa Chinda had to say; "The last time I was on stage was 14 years ago. The show was energising, rich and challenging to me."

Miss Ige (@igesings), one of our guests also had this to say; "The show was fantastic. If you are not here, you have missed. The perfect Christmas show . Joke Silva was a witch and the King (Segun Arinze) was mad."

Nollywood veterans spotted at the show were Olu Jacobs, Nobert Young, Kingsley Ogoro, Francis Onwochei, Charles Novia and many more.

Health / Mortein: The Power To Protect Mosquitoes by empexy(m): 2:30pm On Jan 17, 2013
"All noise but nothing to show for it'' is a sentence I would love to attribute to an insecticide.

You see, mosquitoes + malaria have always been Africa's greatest enemy.

According to statistics, Malaria kills about 1.2 million people yearly; with Africa accounting for 91% (Nigeria, DRC, Uganda and Ethiopia account for about 50%) of deaths recorded.

It is the second LEADING cause of death in Africa (second to HIV). And what is more alarming is the fact that of all the medical facilities Africa possesses, 40% are used to treat malaria. O_O

Now you see how lucrative insecticide business is in Nigeria and Africa in general. *maybe I should start producing mine cheesy*

My headache now is, why would a brand like Reckitt Benckiser Household (ironically, its a Chinese company), come up with a make believe mosquito terminator product, MORTEIN.

When you see their adverts, you would be convinced beyond all reasonable doubt that surely Armageddon is on mosquitoes.

I had first purchased their spray insecticide, but nothing happened. It was like the mosquitoes in my crib were having a get together on my flesh.

Okies, just maybe the spray ain't good enough. So I decided to get the Liquid Electrical refill, hoping that that will be my deliverer from the evil proboscis Quitoes posses.

After purchasing ''all new Mortein, the POWER TO PROTECT'' insecticide, I said to myself; ''today na today...una go hear am''.

I hurried home, took out my ''deliverer'' from its pack and quickly connected it to a socket on the wall. Yes...''this is it'', was all my head reiterated. Little did i know it was just another money and effort gone down the worthless expenditure drain.

The Quitoes were probably laughing at me when I brought out their supposedly Terminator. Rather than bring demise to the evil insects, it acted as a vitamin giving drug. It made them healthier. Smh!

I would've just stuck to the insecticide my family and I have always trusted, but you wouldn't blame me; with all the action packed adverts everywhere better than Nollywood flicks, I only wanted to see for myself by trying something new. I did see, and I am testifying.

As far as I am concerned, I'm done with them. The war on Quitoes rages on.

By the way, the night acappella group whisperers inspired this article. I just couldn't sleep. Kudos to them. Y'all days are numbered though.
Literature / Education: A Blessing Or Distraction? by empexy(m): 7:41pm On Dec 21, 2012
Did you ever come across some complex signs called equations while in school? If you never did, count yourself lucky.

We all (mostly science students) encountered some frustrating moments (mathematics without application) in school, which made us ask one realistic question; “At what point in life will I use this maths?”

I do remember, a lecturer once told us that some of these maths were used in constructing bridges. Well, I never did agree because I was pretty sure that Julius Berger didn’t write any mathematical formula for the Eko bridge, neither was any written for the Third Mainland Bridge. If they did, please I would like to know.

Besides students going through lectures that might add nothing to their lives (e.g. Basic programming language: who uses this ), the educational system which was designed to groom and enlighten the already gifted mines of humans, has fallen short of its purpose in Nigeria.

Although, some might dispute the fact stated above, with an argument that it depends on the choice of institution, but with testimonies from highly rated institutions in the country, no need for further ado.

Educating the mind is an essential part of human life that separates a literate from an illiterate. But school is not the only place to learn, although it is most preferred and referred.

In Nigeria, crises experienced by students in the educational system might just be the reason why non of our academic institutions are ranked among the world’s top 500 universities.

Just to mention a few of the problems:
‘I get leg’ (you don’t need brilliance to gain admission or pass examinations); special centres (only for those who know their way), ‘Money talks bullshit walks’ (if you dont have money please stay at home, education is not for the poor).

These unfair acts have become a routine at almost every level of learning, including primary education, sadly.

Most times I’ve asked students (University/College) why they picked their course of study, and 80% answers depicted that they were in school just for the certificate, with an uncertainty for the future.

“I don’t know. It’s all about the certificate. Just get the paper and hustle after school,” a student said.

Well, its difficult faulting the student’s statement as we see graduates who studied Biology or Botany working at our Banks.

If most students don’t have an idea of what they are doing in school, then what exactly is happening at the Universities.

Below are the laments of some students in Universities based on their everyday experiences (for some reasons I decided not to mention the schools and student names);

–”I am a 300 level computer science student and we are barely allowed to touch a computer or use the computer laboratory. I owe myself the obligation of self development.”

–”Classrooms are most times over populated and not even conducive for fishes in a tin of sardine. Not to mention the ever shrieking asthmatic engine generator that generates much smoke, leaving you at a point of lethargy.”

–”Some Lecturers just come to class, give you a handbook and disappear until examination day. It’s all left to us to study. The handbooks are compulsory buy if you want to graduate as estimated.”

–”I am tired of school. Some lecturers just give students outrageous projects to work on. One of my friends was asked to build an ATM machine.”

Against all the odds, youths still strive to be enlightened without the walls of knowledge. Why? It’s not like their future is determined by school. Yes, it isn’t; neither are they guaranteed jobs at graduation or a life worth craving for in a country where almost nothing is working except chaos and corruption.

It must be said that success is not entirely associated with your educational level as many have made it big in life without graduating college [William Henry "Bill" Gates III, Mark Zuckerberg, Tuface Idibia, Johnny Depp, late Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein, Cosmos Maduka (Coscharis group), Colonel Sanders (KFC), Mary Kay Ash (Mary Kay cosmetics), Orji Uzor Kalu etc.].

The above mentioned influential personals may later have gone back to school to complete their education, but that was after attaining success; it can as well be said that it was to fulfil all righteousness and societal dictum.

“I have nothing against education. But at times, education gives people false confidence. It makes people relax, trusting in the power of their certificates rather than in working hard.” – Rasaq Okoya (Eleganza Plaza)

Every human has a gift in which success is embedded. School or without School, with God and the right people, success is guaranteed.

In this age and time, its what you do with that mass of neurons that stands out than the certificates you hang on your wall.

“School is not the true test of success. However, educating your mind is essential.”
