PoliticsEnugu Market Explosion: One Feared Dead, Sevearl Injured by Emulti(op): 1:49pm On Jul 19, 2014
An explosion reportedly occurred at eke ozi market in Igboeze North Local Government area of Enugu State, on Friday afternoon.

A one-year-old baby was feared dead and others wounded following the incident which was said to have occurred at about 2:00p.m few meters to the divisional police headquarters at Ogrute, Nigerian Tribune reports.

The explosion which was suspected to be bomb blast made the market women and traders scamper for safety, leading to a stampede.

The baby reportedly died during stampede which lasted for a some time, while hoodlums looted shops.

When the scene was visited on Saturday by journalist, several of the traders were seen lamenting their loss.

Commercial activities have however resumed in the market.

Attempts to reach the state Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amarizu for comment proved abortive.

It would be recalled that between 20 and 50 suspected Boko Haram members were apprehended at Obollo Afor, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, on June 25, 2014, Wednesday. Though a spokesperson said the suspects might be traders, not terrorists.

With the current spate of insecurity in the country churches in Enugu had begun thorough screening of its members before allowing them into the Sunday services as part of of efforts to prevent attack on the church by Boko Haram insurgents. They also banned women from entering with hand-bags as part of the security measures. Some Pentecostal churches within Enugu also procured bomb detecting equipment with which they screened vehicles driven by worshippers into the premises of the churches within the state capital.

SportsChelsea Ready To Offload Mikel Obi At Reduced Fee by Emulti(op): 3:16pm On Jul 16, 2014
Latest news coming in from England suggest that Chelsea football club has allegedly decided to offload Nigeria’s John Obi Mikel. According to Tuttomercatoweb, Mikel, who managed just 11 Premier League starts for the Blues as he found surplus to requirement after the arrival ofNemanja Matic in January, has been offered to several of big clubs for no more than £4.7 million.
It was gathered that Chelsea took the decision after the management of the club decided not to invest. This latest development is coming after the London Evening Standard claimed last week that Chelsea are actively looking to offload the midfielder.
John Mikel Obi Faces Chelsea’s ExitWith thearrival of Cesc Fabregas at the West London outfit last monthto add furthercompetition in the centre of thepark, with a departure increasingly likely for the 27-year-old.Mikel, who has been with Chelsea since 2006, has been linked with moves to Spain, Turkey and Italy over the past six months, though concrete interest has appeared hard to come by.
Football transfers analysts are already saying if £4.7 million is the genuine figure Chelsea are willing to accept for Mikel, it represents a strikingly firm desire to get him off the club’s books given the relatively smallsum.
Mikel against Iran at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in BrazilOthers believe it may be that the Blues are keen to be freed of Mikel’s £75,000 per week wages.Mikel’s deal with Blues does not run out until the summer of 2017, but Jose Mourinho appears to have lost faith in theplayer and is eager to offload him to create space and raise more funds for new acquisition. It is reported that lack of interest in the 27-year-old has forced the club to reduce their asking price for the player who had an unimpressive outing at the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil.

The Nigeria international gave a good account of himself at the World Cup in Brazil, and the Blues will foreseeably be hoping sides outside of Serie A took enough notice to come forward for Mikel’s services. Some weeks ago, it was reported that Inter Milan of Italy is interested in bringing Mikel to the Serie A.With the reduced asking price Chelsea has reportedly placed on the midfielder, it may not be too long before suitors would come for Mikel.

If PDP Is Voted Out Nigeria Will Have Stable Electricity-FasholaYesterday
Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, on Thursday, stated that the only way Nigeriacan have stable electricity is for her citizen to vote out the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 general election.

Governor Babatunde Fashola addressing newsmen at an event Related: Epileptic Power: Electricity Consumers To Experience Increased Tariff From JuneAccording to The Nation, the governor made the revelation during a ceremony marking his 2,600 days in office held at the Blue Roof of the Lagos Television premises. Fashola, noted that the current electricity problem faced by Nigerians is caused by lack of ideas and insincerity of purpose on the part of the PDP-led Federal Government.Related: Electricity Supply In Nigeria: The Lies The Government Keep Telling"Yes I agree with you that it is possible to generate electricity and to make sure that everybody in this country has electricity, we have to do the right thing. But you know what, the only way that you and I will have electricity in this country will be to vote out the PDP" Fashola said.

"In 16 years hundreds of billions of naira have been spent and we cannotswitch on electricity and in seven years we have created four plants. It shows that something is missing. So unless you vote for All Progressive Congress it is going to be difficult to have electricity.

They started from vision 2020-20 and I told you then that they were having a nightmare, that there was no vision. They moved to seven point agenda and now they are transforming".

HealthThe Small Gods Called Medical Doctors Need Sacrifice by Emulti(op): 8:53pm On Jul 08, 2014
Fejiro OliverTHE SMALL gods CALLED MEDICAL DOCTORS NEEDS SACRIFICEFUNKE EGBEMODE (AThe Sun NigeriaNewspaper columnist)It pisses me off when people who don’t know anything pretend to know something. Myanger is worse with those who ought to know yet know nothing. And I am mighty angry with you and you and you and the government. You still don’t know why I’m angry, right? Veryannoying people. How long is itgoing to take a nation of supposedly brilliant people to realize our doctors are big boys, big babes and we should not take them for granted? When are we going to face up to the fact that doctors are not mere men, not ordinary people we should toy with?If we are as intelligent as we claim we are, won’t we know that men who can make a difference between life and death in as little as a minute aresmall gods? But what do we know? What do we do? We annoy our doctors every year, force them to dump their stethoscopes in anger. What kind of smart people piss off gods with such reckless abandon annually instead of worshipping them? Only Nigerians. Smart people offer sacrifices to their gods regularly. They don’t put their stubby fingers in the eyes of thegods.Look at me. I spent four years in the university getting a degree but doctors spend six years. Do I need Wikipedia to tell me my degree is smaller than that of a doctor? Seriously?Other graduates start at grade level 8 in the civil service. Doctors start at level 12. It takesabout 10 years to catch up with these special people. Isn’t that why I go to the hospital each time I have malaria even though I have been having malaria since forever? Still I’m no specialist, no consultant, at treating malaria. When are we going to get it intoour pompous heads that it is and will always be our fault thatdoctors go on strike every year?We should quit blaming these great people who help to keep us alive and well. We should listen to their every whisper, appreciate every drop of their sweat. Of course, we can never pay them enough for their efforts, which is why they have to take an oath to be good to useven when we are bad to them. They are priceless, our jewels of inestimable value. These human beings are bigger than their employers, don’t you think? That is what the federal and state governments needs toknow. We all need to acknowledge the goodness andgreatness of our doctors. The Minister and the Minister of State for Health are medical doctors. The heads of NAFDAC, NHIS, NACA, among other health institutions are doctors. Ihear between the federal and state hospitals in Lagos, there are 2,000 consultants in Lagos alone. Don’t exclaim yet. I also heard that 92% of the budget ofthe health sector goes to payingsalaries, 58% of which goes to medical doctors. Are your eyes threatening to pop out of their sockets? Tell them to maintain status quo ante.It may look like doctors are getting too much as it is but we need to do more. It doesn’t matter that NMA is a trade union, not a member of NLC or TUC, we always negotiate with the body. But we need to do more. It does not matter that it is rude for employees to order their employers around, they have us all by the balls and theyare squeezing. Let’s beg them even if the 24 reasons patients are dying since July 1 is not our fault. Most of their demands are administrativeissues but we must still beg them now. Check out some of the reasons and see how boxed into a corner we are by men and women whose salaries are paidfrom your tax and sweat.“The NMA is opposed to the appointment of directors in thehospitals. This position distorts the chain of command in the hospital, induces anarchy.”Ah, chain of command is important. Very important. Anything that distorts it is reason enough to promote a few hundreds of patients from the ward to the mortuary.“Grade level 12 (CONMESS 2) in the health sector MUST be SKIPPED for medical doctors.”Good point. Let us sacrifice a few babies in the neonatal unitsto this demand. Those premature little things ought to have known better than to come into the world at a time medical doctors are still being made to endure CONMESS 2. Itis not fair to help these babies while no one is helping doctors.“The title “CONSULTANT” in a hospital setting describes the relationship between the Specialist Medical Doctor and his patient. It will be a source ofconfusion if the title is applied to any other health worker who statutorily does not own patient.”Yes now. The doctors own us assoon as we have the misfortuneof stepping into their hospitals. This CONSULTANT chieftaincy title is the exclusive preserve of doctors. Burying a few patients to secure this title is just a little sacrifice even if it is the reason you are burying your favourite aunt because there was no doctor on duty when she got to the hospital. I’m even suggesting special beaded stethoscope and scrubs for Consultants so they can stand out in the crowd of health workers.“Surgeon General of the Federation MUST be appointed with immediate effect.”I like the MUST in capital letters. That’s what happens when the employee becomes bigger than the employer. A man goes to apply for a job, his files clutched in his nervous hands behind him, wearing faded shirts and cheap shoes. You give him the job and then he starts throwing words like MUST around because he can now afford a brand new Kia Picanto? The little boy is getting too big for his booties, ain’t he?“Clinical duty allowance for Honorary Consultants should be increased by 90% of CONMESS and Hazard allowance MUST be at least N100, 000 per month for Medical Doctors.”This is a matter of urgent national importance. This sacred allowance is enough reason for a woman to lose an only child because the doctors are on strike. It’s enough reason to enlarge the community of widows and widowers. We should pay them their money and when we do, we shall insist they make the dead walk.“Government should as a matter of urgency set up a health trust fund that will enhance the upgrading of all hospitals in Nigeria.”Awwww. How nice and considerate. These small gods are not totally mean after all. They kill a few and heal a few. But what is a well equipped hospital if there are no doctors to man the equipment because next year, our little gods will go on strike again. It’s an annual ritual. One thing bothers me though. When these doctors resume and find out that 10 of the patients in Ward 6, 5 in Ward 7 and 15 in the maternity ward died while they were on strike, what will they tell God when praying five times a day or when they ‘lift up holy hands’ in church on Sunday?

TV/MoviesRe: You’ll Soon Have To Pay To Watch ‘free’ TV At Home- FG by Emulti(m): 7:10pm On Jul 05, 2014
Obiagelli: Here’s the news in brief: Nigerians who own
television sets will soon have to pay
“annual content access fee” to improve
content and infrastructure of the country’s
broadcasting stations.
The fee is similar to the TV licence paid in
the UK ─ which is used to fund the British
Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
As a result, the BBC does not accept
advertisements in the UK because it is
financed with tax payers’ money.
Government-owned broadcast stations in
Nigeria run on subventions as well as
advertising revenue.
Nigeria currently operates a radio licence
regime which is considered ineffective.
However, the federal government said it
would introduce “content access fee” to
replace radio licence fee ahead of
Nigeria’s migration to digital terrestrial
television broadcasting by 2015.
Information minister Labaran Maku made
this known at the opening of the extra
ordinary meeting of the National Council of
Information (NCI) in Abuja.
Maku said the planned content access fee,
which was currently undergoing final
adjustments, was expected to get the nod
of the federal executive council before the
migration.
He said that government and other
stakeholders would leverage on the new
technology to make the new format more
effective than the archaic radio licence
fees format.
Maku explained: “For a long time radio
licences have not been collected and in
other countries the public broadcast
services are run from fees collected on
broadcast content.
“But unfortunately in our country, the
existing constitutional provision has made
fee collection less effective.
“Now, we are undertaking a new format.
We are taking advantage of the digital
technology and looking beyond sending
people to go from place to place to collect
fees for broadcast content.”
According to him, under this new regime,
anyone seeking access to television content
has to pay an annual content access fee.
The minister outlined some of the
advantages of the new broadcast content
fee collection regime to include improved
financial capability for stakeholders “to
improve content and upgrade
infrastructure”.
He said this would help the Nigeria
Broadcasting Commission and other
stakeholders have access to adequate
funds for sustained upgrade of their
infrastructure for effective service delivery.
On the NCI meeting, Maku said Nigeria
was at crossroads to either transit
smoothly or risk being cut-off from the rest
of the world by June 2015 when the global
migration deadline takes effect.
