Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, has faulted the claim by Arewa Consultative Forum on the reports of the 2014 national conference. The group particularly asked the ACF to “stop peddling the funny claim of the North being 80 per cent of Nigeria in land mass and with a higher population” because the “fallacies have been laid to rest.” A statement on Sunday by the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, said, “All the over 600 resolutions taken at the conference were by consensus as delegates never had to vote once. The only issues that remained contentious were the percentages of increase in derivation, the minerals development fund and the disaster relief fund. “The point of disagreement was when some Arewa delegates insisted that they would only agree to the five per cent increase in derivation and same for mineral resources development all over Nigeria on the condition that the five per cent earmarked for disaster intervention fund should be only for areas where Boko Haram are operating, while other delegates frowned on making Boko Haram a derivation item. “The compromise struck was to refer the items to the president for a technical committee harmonisation.” Afenifere added that the allegation “laced with the usual feudal arrogance, outright misinformation, atavistic obfuscation and delusory myopia” would have been ignored “were it not that falsehood repeated time and again may start to wear the garb of truth.” It said, “Let us from the outset make it clear that the unitary order, which the House of Arewa, has used to limit the flourishing of the component units of Nigeria for decades, has now entered a terminal crisis with shrinking receipt from oil and like a one-legged man dancing “skelewu”, will sure hit the ground even if he has all the stage to himself. “And when the fall comes, ACF and co-travellers would wish we had done the needful. They should, therefore, perish the thought that Afenifere is cajoling them to allow a restructured Nigeria.” Afenifere said it was amused that ACF was still peddling the claim of controlling 80 per cent of Nigeria because it had thought the fallacies had been laid to rest in 2014 after some of their delegates had taunted their co- conferees from the South “with map of Nigeria drawn at the back of their babanriga showing the North as 80 per cent of Nigeria.” Odumakin recalled that during the national confab, delegates were unanimous that the figures of all the censuses held in Nigeria till date had not been credible due to hegemonic interference with what should have just been an exercise to provide scientific data to aid planning and development. It was also agreed that the natural boundaries of the North and the South are Rivers Niger and Benue “but the British drew artificial boundaries to favour the North and punish the South for agitating for independence.” Afenifere also queried why the North would be using the issue of bigger land mass, which was allegedly cornered to its advantage, to harvest revenue from the central purse instead of cultivating it. The delegates, it said, also resolved that if the higher population claim were true, “why would a man say his neighbours should not send their children to the best schools because they have to cater for his own children who are more than theirs?” http://www.thebiafraherald.co/2015/08/yorubas-tells-arewa-consultative-forum.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter&m=1

For Ugochukwu Egwuatu, a trader in Nkwo Nnewi, lack of genuine support from government, is slowing down business in the area. “We’ve not really seen serious impact of the government over the years, especially the federal government. I thank God that Innoson has succeeded in drawing their attention to Nnewi, but beside producing the first made in Nigeria car, Nnewi has what it takes to lead industrial revolution in Nigeria.” He continued: “We have Ministry of Science and Technology and money is voted every year, what have they achieved? Here in Nnewi, with no government support, you can see the result; our people are resilient. All we need is conducive environment to operate; power supply is still a major challenge. Notwithstanding, go to Nkwo Market, there’s nothing our people don’t produce; traders come from all over the country to buy goods. We are seriously contributing to the economy of this country. Sometimes, I feel that due to what happened during the civil war, the rest of the country seem to be afraid of empowering the Igbo man to achieve its full potential,” he said. After he was sworn in as the governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano made public his intention to take the state beyond buying and selling and launch it into a new economic phase. To achieve this, the governor marshaled what he described as Four Pillars Of Development, which include Aggressive Mechanized Agriculture, Oil And Gas, Trade & Commerce, and Industrialisation. Already, Anambra Sate hosts a large number of Industrial Clusters, but many have raised concern on the need to strengthen this advantage with an appropriate policy framework that will boost the indigenous capacity in the sector. It is hoped that the initiative will not only have a direct impact on wealth creation in the state, but will also bring down rate of unemployment. While the state is currently sealing agreement with international partners and investors to actualise its dream, a nest has been created at the Technology Incubation Centre Nnewi, to train youths under the State Youth Skills and Empowerment Scheme. Already, the first 500 participants drawn from the 21 LGAs of the state are undergoing training at the centre, which is always beehive of activities. Though the Incubation Centre was put in place by the federal government as part of the efforts to train young Nigerians in the area of science and technology, the Anambra State government, under the present administration, has seen reasons to take advantage of the facility to spark industrial revolution. The programme is designed in a way that the 500 youths would attend classes three times a week for free, while the government provides them with feeding and transportation allowance. While the maximum period for the training is three months, there are some skills in the curriculum that runs for just a month. For instance, those in cosmetics, chemical and allied, food and agro processing and others don’t have to spend three moths; most of them will be rounding off soon. But for those into fabrication, building technology, foundry, auto spare parts and leatherwork and so on, they have to complete three months at the Centre. To ensure the trainees are grounded in their field of choice, a special scheme was developed to perfectly blend theoretical learning with practical. While resident entrepreneurs at the Centre serve as resource persons for the trainees in different fields, staff handle the theoretical aspects. With standard laboratories and workshops manned by scientists and engineers, who are professionals in those fields, the trainees have all is required to excel. Though, the current batch is made up of mostly youths with secondary school certificate, there are graduates among them, who see the empowerment programme as an opportunity to have practical knowledge of what they learnt in school. As it is, only a few of them wish to take up paid employment; others want to be entrepreneurs. Of course, the success story of industrialists in Nnewi is enough encouragement for these young one to believe that, if the Innososns and Ibetos of Nnewi can make it as industrialists, then it is possible. While the Centre provides both theoretical and practical training for the participants, the manufacturing firms around give them opportunity to see real time production process. The progarmme is designed in such as a way that the trainees go for internship with different firms in Nnewi. And being a member of the Nnewi Chamber of Commerce, getting placement for the interns is no big deal for the Incubation Center. “You find that for you to operate in a system, you have to be part of that system. Having been member of the Nnewi Chamber of Commerce, it’s very easy to interact with the industries. The main objective of the excursion is to exposure the students and we have categorised them into various skills,” Mrs. Uche Chukwu, the Center Manager hinted. While those into chemical and allied products go to Chikason Group, those in catering and agro processing are sent to Tummy Tummy Foods factory. For those into fabrication and auto parts, Innosson Motors is their destination, while those into electrical and building technology are sent to Cutix Cable Plc. There’s also provision for those in the fishery section to visit a fish and snail farm in Adazi community. “Aside from what we teach them here, the idea is to send them out to see proper industrial setting and have the opportunity to ask question. Most of these industrialists started small, so this is an opportunity for the trainee to understand that you don’t need billions to become an entrepreneur,” one of the teaching staff hinted. Upon graduation, the youths will be provided with seed money by the state government to establish small- scale businesses so as to become self-reliant. Providing insight into the state government’s commitment towards ensuring the viability and sustainability of the empowerment programme, the then Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr. Obi Nwankwo, said the programme is collaboration between Anambra State and Federal Ministry of Science & Technology. “The federal government handles the area of management and administration, payment of the admin staff, procurement of some of the equipment and infrastructure development, while Anambra built all the facilities and structures at the centre.” According Nwankwo, who now heads Ministry of Public Utilities, apart from the participants getting necessary skills, the government sees the program as a key component of its economic enablers. “It will provide ready skilled work- force to support and service the state’s areas of needs in the governor Obiano’s Four-Pillars of Agriculture, Oil & Gas, Trade and Commerce and Industrialisation. The 500 youths participating in this phase one programme were selected from a database of over five thousand, who were registered in the state Ministry of Science and Technology to reflect a cross-section of the state and the applicant’s area of interest. So far, we are impressed with the result we are getting and the governor is already thinking of having the second batch on board,” he said. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/08/nnewi-the-melting-pot-of-commerce-industry/ |
Some years ago, when some Nnewi
traders in Lagos resolved to head
back home and reestablish their
motorcycle business, it looked like a
mission impossible. Really, leaving
the commercial nerve centre of the
country at that time, with all its
potentials, for a local community like
Nnewi, was indeed a huge risk.
However, after weighing the pros and
cons of doing business in Eko,
especially with the activities of the
area boys, the traders made the
move, which eventually paid off.
Today, what started merely as a
trading centre for motorcycle spare
parts at Nkwo Nnewi Market has
turned the town into an economic
hub of the east, with companies and
industries scattered all over the
place. Notwithstanding the level of
industrial activities taking place in
Nnewi, commerce is still major.
It is on record that the first indigenous
car manufacturing plant in Nigeria
(owned by Innoson Group) is located
in Nnewi, while the first wholly
made-in-Nigeria motorcycle was
manufactured in the town by the
National Agency for Science and
Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI).
So, to a large extent, Nnewi holds the
ace in technological advancement of
the country.
When approaching the commercial
town from Nnobi axis, you will surely
know that a commercial centre is just
near by; the signs are everywhere.
Being the home of motorcycle in
Nigeria, which remains a major mode
of transportation here, almost every
home owns at least one bike. Unlike
in other parts of the country where
ridding a bike is more of men’s thing,
in Nnewi, it is everybody’s affair; from
women to children, elderly… everyone
is involved.
From left to right, there are economic
activities going on at every corner.
Welders, technicians, traders dealing
mostly in automobile products,
restaurants… there’s no place for idle
minds. Though the town has grown in
strength as regards industrial
activities, Nkwo Nnewi Market still
remains the centre of attraction. It is
more like the exhibition ground for
goods produced in the area.
From large-scale manufacturers to
small-scale entrepreneurs, who use
charcoal to produce motorcycle break
pads to big time industrialists, Nnewi
has positioned itself as the Japan of
Africa, as it is home to many major
indigenous manufacturing
companies.
From Ibeto Group of Companies to
Cutix Plc, Uru Industries Ltd, Omata
Holdings Ltd, First Aluminum, Cento
Group of Companies, Coscharis
Group of Companies, Innoson Group
of Companies, Tomy Tomy Group,
Ngoo Bros, Ebunso Nig. Ltd, John
White Industries, Ejiamatu Group of
Companies, Chicason Group, Louis
Carter Group… the list is endless.
Interestingly, majority of these
industrialists, especially those within
the automobile cluster, were once
traders. In fact, most of them, such as
Innoson, Tummy Tummy Group,
Coscharis actually started from Nkwo
Nnewi where they sold motorcycle
spare parts. Except for the likes of
Cutix Plc, whcih has a background in
engineering, a large number of these
industrialists started from Nkwo
Market.
Having experienced first hand how
technology boosted the Chinese
economy, these men, who started out
as importers and franchisee for major
Chinese brands, have since migrated
into production.
Obviously, the achievements of their
foreign partners might have spurred
them to take a chance. Forget their
grammar, which might not be as
fluent as that of the Queen, but these
men understand how to apply science
and technology to satisfy need and
earn good money. And with a vibrant
Nnewi Chamber of Commerce, which
sometimes provides the intellectual
aspect of the ventures, things are look
bright for them.
According to history, the first Igbo
man to own and drive a car was HRH
Igwe Orizu I (Eze Ugbo Onya Mba) in
1912. And by 1940, Nnewi residents
were at the center of an international
trading network that dominated the
supply of motor spare parts in
Nigeria. The town subsequently
became a center for commerce and
industry, and has one of the largest
automotive parts markets in Africa.
Besides the big players, small and
medium sized industries have also
joined the venture, producing for both
Nigerian market and for export.
Since 1970, Nnewi have controlled
approximately 80 to 90 percent of the
motor-parts trade in Nigeria. This
has made Nkwo Nnewi Market the
major import and wholesale point for
motor spare parts in Nigeria. The
industrialists on their parts are
adapting foreign technology for local
needs, providing employment for
thousands.
“Nnewi is a success story, which
Nigeria as a country, is yet to
celebrate. Funny enough, majority of
these people that championed this
cause never saw the four walls of the
university; most of them managed to
finish secondary school. But today,
they control the economy of this
place. What that tells you is that an
average Nnewi man in particular, an
average Igbo in general, is naturally
gifted,” Charles Muojike, an Nnewi
native said.

Radio Biafra: A Stitch In Time...By Ahmad Salkida and Johnson Chinedu Edwin Our investigations have observed that the Director has a growing influence on the minds of many who come from the other side of the Niger. The danger in this is that people in that region are beginning to accept whatever he says as the gospel truth. To the unreasoning mind, the Director is framing the thoughts of many of his listeners and predisposing them to dangerous tendencies. Without going into specifics, but to underscore what one is trying to say, the relevant authorities should know the danger of a collective mind-set propelled towards a particularly risky direction. BY AHMAD SALKIDA AND JOHNSON CHINEDU EDWINJUN 29, 2015 In two separate newspaper articles published in 2006 and 2009 in the New Sentinel and Sunday Trust, which can be credited to one of us, Boko Haram’s total disregard for civil values was the main point of discourse. The report in question warned that the government’s disregard for the rebellious inclinations of the group would bring a calculated catastrophe to society. The authorities ignored this and did not consider the imminent peril of society. Last week, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) of Nigeria urged Nigerians to simply ignore Radio Biafra, a broadcast platform that has committed time, energy, and resources to peddling resentful communication about Nigeria and her constituted authorities. NBC’s management claimed that they were aware of the pirate radio station that is “transmitting seditious and divisive content contrary to the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code and law” and they are “working with security agencies to track the source of the broadcast.” Nnamdi Kanu, who is fondly called Director, is the name behind the radio show. On a daily basis, the radio is winning many Southern, Nigerian admirers. According to a random survey conducted for the purpose of this article, an increasing number of traders, men and women in villages, schools, and commuter buses tune to the 97.6 band width. In Aba, Abia State the radio’s audience is growing steadily among young people. A public commentator known as “Onye Nkuzi” on Twitter (@cchukudebelu), recently dissected this phenomenon, lamenting that “the Nigerian State doesn't have a narrative to challenge alienation - we've seen it in the North East and Niger Delta. It pops up again.” Radio Biafra, like the ongoing insurgency in northeast Nigeria, feeds on alienation to peddle a culture of violence through retribution of real and perceived injustice. Meanwhile, it serves every society well to pay attention to signals and other sub-signals that have the potential to erupt into other disturbing cauldrons of widespread violence. In Asaba, Delta State, with frightful alacrity, an Igbo man brought the consciousness of radio Biafra to one of these writers one evening in the southeast and implored everyone present to tune into the station. As soon as the right bandwidth was accessible, the voice of the ‘Director,’ Nnamdi Kanu, came through forcefully over the airwaves. To say the least, It was an arresting, almost hypnotic voice, but it was not the voice that was the problem, but the substance of what Kanu said and how he said it that called for concern. With a warped history of the causes and effects of the 1967 Biafran Civil War, many unsuspecting listeners were spellbound as the voice of “director” resonated over the airwaves with ceaseless histrionics. With his commentaries on a wide range of subjects all geared towards the need for the burdened southern region to secede from the north and “the hypocrite southwest,” he seemed tireless. Our investigations have observed that the Director has a growing influence on the minds of many who come from the other side of the Niger. The danger in this is that people in that region are beginning to accept whatever he says as the gospel truth. To the unreasoning mind, the Director is framing the thoughts of many of his li http://saharareporters.com/2015/06/29/radio-biafra-stitch-timeby-ahmad-salkida-and-johnson-chinedu-edwin |

Sunday, June 28, 2015 Security agents in the country are currently combing the entire South East to track down the source of Radio Biafra broadcasts and possibly apprehend all those behind the station. Already, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has described Radio Biafra as a pirate radio station and accused it of transmitting seditious and divisive content, contrary to the provisions of the Nigerian Broadcasting Code and the law. Reports have it that listeners to the radio station which airs on 104.7 FM cut across age and political leanings. It was reported that the radio station criticised all past and present presidents, including President Muhammadu Buhari. Even the leader of the Movement for Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, was not left out as the station described him as a sell out, while referring to Nigeria territory as zoo. However, Awwalu Salihu, who is the director in charge of public affairs at the NBC urged citizens to ignore the inflammatory content of the broadcasts and continue to work towards a strong, united and prosperous nation. He said, "The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has become aware of a pirate radio station transmitting seditious and divisive content contrary to the provisions of the Nigerian Broadcasting Code and the law. "The Commission wishes to assure the public that it is working in conjunction with security forces to track the source of the broadcasts and possibly apprehend all those behind the station. "The Commission further urges Nigerians to ignore the inflammatory content of the broadcasts and continue to work towards a strong, united and prosperous nation," he said. Meanwhile, indications emerged that the station has been on air for years now without successful efforts to put it off the airways. Sunday Tribune gathered that the fact that the station, which also streams on the internet, has been around for years and gained appeal among the people of the region. http://odili.net/news/source/2015/jun/28/612.html |

Some South-West leaders are currently biting their fingers in regret over voting President Muhammadu Buhari into office. buhariThe zone is particularly angry with the President, who is the leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for tolerating the outcome of National Assembly leadership election, which did not favour the region. Buhari’s silence according to them is a serious indication that the zone, which queued behind him to ensure victory at the recent polls, may benefit little or nothing from the administration. “For the fact that the South-West played a key role in the emergence of Buhari as the President, it is expected that they would occupy a more strategic position than the post of vice president”, said one of the leaders. They argued that the National Assembly leadership election, which eventually placed the North Central geopolitical zone as a powerful force in the country’s power equation through the emergence of former Kwara governor, Bukola Saraki, as Senate President and Yakubu Dogara from the North-East, has depicted the South- West as not only a weak power bloc in the equation. With the power structure now, the South-West as a region has been relegated to the background in the power structure of the country. Some of the leaders of the region who also participated in the last National Conference argue that since the South- West does not hold any substantial position in the current power structure, the region must re-strategise to assert itself in the politics of the nation. They further argued that the position of Vice President, which is presently held by a south westerner, does not place the region as a powerful force. While referring to one of the speeches made by former President Goodluck Jonathan during the campaigns leading up to the 2015 general elections, National Coordinator of Coalition of Democrats for Electoral Reform, CODER, Chief Ayo Opadokun, a South-West leader, who spoke to the Nigerian Pilot Sunday on the current power imbalance, noted that the Yoruba race made a great mistake by not re-electing the former President, considering what he had in stock for the zone. He emphasised that the implementation of the National Conference report would elevate the standard of the zone, which is the reason people of the South-West should have queued behind Jonathan. http://scannewsnigeria.com/news/we-regret-voting-buhari-south-west-leaders/WE REGRET VOTING BUHARI– South West Leaders Nigerian Pilot |

Following the xenophobic attempts, unhealthy social jealousy and the attempt at embarrassing people of the South-East origin residing and doing business in lagos, the following 5 year plan has been drawn up for deliberation by igbos for plans to leave lagos in the same fashion the israelites left Egypt, Savinggracereporters.com reports. The list which was obtained by Savinggracereporters.com from a Chieftain of Ohanaeze Ndigbo on condition of anonymity, contain 5 strategic point mapped to be carried out on or before the year 2020. Read Below: 1. Relocation of Igbo Children: The first on the list is the policy of sending igbo children, teens, undergraduate to schools in the east this would lead to more than 3 million igbo students presently schooling in lagos and neighbouring schools migrating to the east leading to inflow of capital to the east to the tune of N60B per session at the average rate of N20000 per student. The resultant effect will be the triggering of new investment in the educational sector never seen since the end of the civil war. Also investment in stationery manufacturing, construction of school buildings, broadband Internet infrastructure, aviation business, etc will add value to the eastern economy and put a lot of people into employment. 2. Relocation Of Investment: Second on the list is the gradual relocation of igbo investments and capital from the city of lagos back to the East. This will require utmost care and precision and advise of finance experts. First to be considered are the financial and stock broking and services companies like banks, insurance etc. Banks with total igbo ownership or considerable influence like Fidelity, Diamond, UBA, Zenith Access, Union should fuse into a powerful financial alliance and plan on how to relocate to either Enugu, Port Harcourt. This would lead to relocation or more than 2/3 of the banking business capital to the east. The relocation will see to the movement of Nigeria’s financial capital to port Harcourt where they will be the major player as these banks form the core of Nigeria systemic banks . Also the movement of financial services companies which would follow this move will lead to stock broking firms, insurance firm, accounting and auditing companies boosting the economy of the east. 3. Consolidated Movement Of Nollywood To Enugu: The movie industry which igbos founded single handedly and built to the third largest film industry in the world should without delay be moved to enugu . Movies must now be made, shot, produced in Enugu. Enugu government collaboration will be needed in building theme parks and allocations of land or zone for the sighting of film studio and film or motion picture schools. The relocation of Nigerian music industry, the industry which is controlled by igbos like Don jazzy, P-square, Flavor ,Nigga Raw ,J martins etc with nollywood will form the largest entertainment capital in Africa. This relocation will be followed up by recording companies 4. Relocation Of The Trading Empire In Alaba, Ladipo etc: The huge trading empire which has been under attack by vultures who often impose arbitrary taxes, annual registration fees and babaloja need to be relocated to the safe cities in Aba and Onitsha. This would require making the river niger navigable, the deep sea port in Akwa ibom completed and a rail link from Akwa Ibom to Aba and Onitsha. The relocation will lead to a more than N10 billion exchanging hands on daily basis in Aba and Onitsha 5. Relocation Of The Oil And Gas Industry To Niger Delta: Firstly this is for international oil and gas companies that originally had their head quarters in Niger Delta until 1969 when some roques with decree relocated the headquarters to lagos in the worst form of robbery and deprivation ever known to man. http://savinggracereporters.com/gist/igbos-map-out-5-year-plan-to-leave-lagos-by-2020/

Members of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a Pro-Biafra group from the southeast and south- south states of the country, last weekend gathered in Aba, Abia State, to honour fallen heroes of their group who died during the Nigerian-Biafran war. Numbering over 10, 000, and as early as 9am, the group gathered in front of Christ the King Catholic Cathedral church from where they took off in groups and marched through the streets of the commercial city, which lasted for over eight hours and cutting acrossOgbor Hill, Aba-Owerri road, Tonimas-Umule axis, Ariaria, Port Harcourt road through Flyover Bus Stop, among others. Traffic was disrupted throughout their rally, even as the state governor’s entourage had to take extra minutes detours to make it through Ogbor hill to his Umuobiakwa country home, while commuters, motorists and residents of Aba, trooped out in their numbers to have a glimpse of what was happening. Several police patrol had followed the procession around, while their patrol vans were also seen at various strategic junctions where the Armoured Personnel Carrier was stationed at Ehi road by CKC, apparently to ensure that the peaceful protest didn’t turn violent. Speaking, some members of the group said that the movement in Aba was to honour some of the fallen heroes of Biafran, who died during the Nigerian-Biafran Civil war, adding that it was also part of their efforts to further push for their agitation for the realiasation of the sovereign state of Biafra. According to one Kalu Francis, “It is more than 100years after Lord Lugard amalgamated the people of Southern and Northern Protectorates. According to the treaty, it was agreed that after 100years, anyone that felt that they are no longer comfortable with the way things are being done, has the right to secede and that is what we are doing. “We are the Indigenous People of Biafra and we believe that the time has come for us to let the world know how badly we have been treated as a people. Even when we lay the eggs that feeds the nation, we are still not benefiting from the eggs we lay. “What we are saying is that we want to be free and until we realise the dreams and aspirations of our founding fathers, we shall continue to push the struggle and push our case to its logical conclusion. “People think that we are going to be troublesome, but we chose the path of peace and honour as a non-violent group to pass our message to the international community that we are no longer comfortable. What we want is a sovereign state of Biafra and nothing else.” However, residents of Aba have commended the police operatives for exhibiting maturity in the way they handled the protesters, stating that it was a paradigm shift from what was obtainable in the past. They added that if the template set out on Sunday by the police could be sustained, “they will be achieving the saying ‘police is your friend’ and not the enemy of the public.” http://dailytimes.com.ng/seast-ssouth-pro-biafra-groups-rally-to-honour-fallen-heroes/
