Gunmen on Thursday killed no fewer than 19 people in Tawari community in the Kogi Local Government Area of Kogi State, burning buildings, including the palace of the king of the community.The Public Relations Officer of the Kogi State Police Command, Mr Williams Anya, confirmed the development in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja on Friday.He said that a police assessment team had visited the community and that many buildings, including places of worship had been burnt.Tawari community is a few kilometres off Gegu town along the Lokoja-Abuja highway.A resident of Tawari community, Mrs Comfort Solomon, who survived the attack, told NAN that the gunmen, numbering about 100 invaded the community late on Thursday.She said the gunmen came in their numbers on motorcycles and descended on the village, killing and burning buildings until the early hours of Friday.Solomon said that many places of worship, including the palace of the Akuma of Tawari were burnt down by the invaders. ”The gunmen were up to 100 in number. They came into the community with motorcycles around 11:15 p.m. when villagers were sleeping.“They entered selected houses, packed foodstuff and motorcycles and burnt selected houses, including homes of clerics.”They killed more than 15 men. The attackers were communicating with each other in Hausa language,” Solomon stated, weeping profusely. Similarly, a NAN correspondent in Minna, Niger, Mrs Rita Nuhu, an indigene of Tawari, who also spoke to NAN on telephone on the development, said that her father’s house was completely burnt down during the attack.”My people have been calling me from home that my father’s house was burnt down by the attackers.“My mother and her sister were ordered out of the house after which the house was set ablaze, while about 15 men were killed. Nuhu told NAN that latest information she got from her village was that the death toll would rise.”We are calling on security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice. We appeal to the federal and state governments to come to our aid,” she pleaded.The king of Tawari, Chief Idris Yusuf, who also spoke to NAN on telephone, confirmed the incident, saying it was the first time the community was experiencing such attack.“This is the first time we are witnessing such deadly attack in our community.Our community has been very peaceful. Early in his career as a guardsman, he was stationed in northwestern Iran, and participated in the suppression of a Kurdish separatist uprising in West Azerbaijan Province.On 22 September 1980, when Saddam Hussein launched an invasion of Iran, setting off the Iran–Iraq War (1980–1988), Soleimani joined the battlefield serving as the leader of a military company, consisting of men from Kerman whom he personally assembled and trained. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has condemned the killing of General Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force, as an "act of international terrorism.""The US bears responsibility for all consequences of its rogue adventurism," Zairf said in a statement on Friday, warning that the move would strengthen resistance against the United States and Israel in the region and the world, Iranian state television reported."The brutality and stupidity of American terrorist forces in assassinating Commander Soleimani ... will undoubtedly make the tree of resistance in the region and the world more prosperous," said Zarif.Soleimani, considered the architect of Iran's regional security apparatus, was killed along with at least six others following a US air strike at Baghdad's international airport. Iraqi armed group commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, an adviser to Soleimani, was also killed in the attack.Following the announcement, Iranian state television presenters wore black and broadcast footage of Soleimani peering through binoculars across a desert and greeting a soldier, and of Muhandis speaking to followers.The high-profile killings come amid a sharp escalation in Iran-US tensions. A 23-year-old man, Adeeko Owolabi, has been arrested alongside a self-acclaimed pastor of a white garment church, Segun Philip, (aged 42) over the murder of a final year sociology student of the Lagos State University, Favour Daley-Oladele.The deceased was reported to have left home to an unknown destination since the 8th of December 2019 and has not been seen since then.Consequently, she was reported missing by her parents at the Mowe Police Station.According to a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Commissioner Of Police, Ogun State Command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, on receiving the report, the DPO Mowe division, SP Marvis Jayeola, detailed his crack detectives to unravel the mystery behind the sudden disappearance of the lady.The detectives then went into full scale technical and forensic investigation of the case and their efforts paid off when the movement of the deceased was traced to a white garment church in Ikoyi-Ile, in Osun State.On getting to the church, the self-acclaimed pastor, was promptly arrested but he informed the detectives that the girl was brought to him by her boyfriend, Adeeko Owolabi.The said boyfriend was traced and also apprehended immediately.On interrogation, Adeeko Owolabi, confessed to the police that the deceased was his girlfriend and that he lured her to Ikoyi-Ile where he perfected plans with the so-called pastor Segun Philip to use her for money rituals.He stated further that while the girl was sleeping, the pastor gave him a pestle with which he used to smash her head.According to him, the pastor quickly used a knife to cut off her neck, he ripped open her chest and removed her heart which he used in preparing a concoction for him and his mother to eat.When asked what pushed him to such devilish act, Owolabi explained that things were not going well with his parents financially and when he sought assistance from the pastor, he was asked to bring a human being for that purpose and the available person at that time was his girlfriend.Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Kenneth Ebrimson, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the Homicide Section of the State criminal investigation and intelligence department for proper investigation.The CP who described the gruesome murder of the deceased as a superlative degree of wickedness vowed to ensure that all the suspects face the full wrath of the law. Hoodlums on Saturday were alleged to have attacked the Edo State deputy governor, Philip Shaibu’s family house in Jattu-Uzairue, Etsako West Local Government Area of the State. It was learnt that one of the hoodlums who already scaled the fence was caught inside the house while others escaped. It was gathered that a patrol team from Jattu Police Division Office responded to a distress call from family members and mobilise to the area. It was further gathered that five persons were arrested by the police in connection of the incident after the suspects caught inside the house mentioned his other accomplices. It was also learnt that the suspects have been transferred to the Area Command at Auchi for onward movement to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), at the command headquarters, Benin. When contacted, the state Police Public Relations officer, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the incident. He said “from what I gathered from the divisional police officer in Jattu, he got a distress call from the family members and move to the area to received the arrested suspects.” He said upon interrogation, the suspects mentioned four other persons who were also arrested. The PPRO added the suspects were transferred to the Area Command at Auchi where preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects went there as a result of running for safety while being chased from where they went to. He, however, said further investigation may reveal more and listed some of the items recovered from them upon search of their house to include locally-made cut- to-size gun, cutlass, battle axe, and two wraps of India hemp.

Police Kill One, Arrest Four In Failed Abuja Bank Robbery.Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have killed one and arrested four suspects who attempted to rob a first generation bank in the Mpape, a satellite town of Abuja.The robbers, who broke into the bank around 10 am on Saturday, met resistance from the Police, Army and the Department of State Security, who cordoned the place minutes after responding to a distress call.According to the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Mariam Yusuf, four of the robbers have been arrested while one was killed in an exchange of gunfire with the Police.The police spokesperson said the situation has been brought under control as a joint security team have maintained sanity in the area.The thieves were trapped inside the bank for over four hours.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said that 9, 698 accidents were recorded in 2019 leading to 4, 737 deaths in the year.FRSC Corps Marshall, Boboye Oyeyemi stated this on Thursday while addressing journalists in Abuja, the nation’s capital.“Available data to the corps revealed that between January to October 2019, a total of 9, 698 road traffic crashes were recorded out of which 4,737 died.“We have 30, 744 people sustained various degrees of injury to 68, 193 people involved. 63, 456 were rescued. The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday upheld the power of the Nigeria Police Force and the Police Council under the control of the Inspector-General of Police to recruit constables into the NPF.Justice Inyang Ekwo, in his judgment, dismissed the suit filed by the Police Service Commission to challenge the power of the NPF and the IGP, Mohammed Adamu, to carry out the ongoing exercise of recruiting 10,000 police constables.
The judge held that the PSC’s case lacked merit.

The judge held that the law guiding the enlistment of constables into the NPF was the Nigeria Police Regulations of 1968, issued by the Nigerian President in accordance with the provisions of Section 46 of the Police Act 1967 (No 41), providing for the organisation and administration of the police force.The judge noted that section 71 of the Nigeria Police Service Regulations gave the power to enlist constables to the Police Council under the control of the IGP and not the PSC.He ruled that the PSC by its enabling law could only appoint constables after the enlistment exercise carried out by the NPF.He added that the Civil Service Rules cited by the PSC in defining the meaning of “appointment” to include “recruitment” did not apply to the NPF, not being a civil service.The judge also noted that contrary to the allegation by the PSC that the NPF and the IGP were attempting to usurp its powers to recruit the constables, it was the PSC that was attempting to usurp their powers to do so.Source:

Gunshot allegedly fired from a helicopter during the November 16 governorship election in Kogi State was said to have injured a 23-year-old woman, Deborah Omoba.Omoba was said to be sleeping in her room inside the mission house of The Apostolic Church, Ajara, Lokoja on the election day when she was hit by bullet fired from the helicopter.The church’s Associate Pastor, Abraham Olusegun, told journalists on the church premises on Wednesday that the bullet was still lodged in the upper region of Omoba’s private parts.Recall that no fewer than four people were reportedly killed when the helicopter allegedly released some gunshots and teargas on voters in some areas during the election.The pastor said, “The victim is a daughter of one of the church’s clerics; she was observing her siesta on the day when she screamed from her sleep.”He said when they rushed into the room, they found the girl in a pool of blood.Olusegun, who said the victim was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, added that the church was attacked during the last general elections.Our correspondent later visited the medical centre’s female surgical ward where the victim was admitted.She, however, was unable to narrate her experience to our correspondent.The centre’s Head of Clinical Services, Dr Taiwo Jones, said the bullet was lodged at a sensitive part of the victim’s body which makes its extraction difficult.He said whenever a bullet was lodged at a sensitive area of the body that could cause more damage, the best thing to do was to leave it for some time and allow the body system to react and push the bullet to the surface where it would be easier to be removed by surgery.He however said the victim was now in a stable condition. The state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Busari, said he was not aware that any helicopter released gunshots or tear gas on the election day.He said, “How can it happen when we are not in a war situation? The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Smart Adeyemi, has won the Kogi West senatorial district election.The Returning Officer of the election, Professor Olajide Lawal, announced this on Saturday at the collation centre in Kogi State.According to him, Senator Adeyemi polled a total of 88,373 votes to beat Senator Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 62,133 votes.Ambassador Rufus Aiyenigba of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) came third in the poll with 659 votes and was trailed by John Olabode and Adeyemi Taiwo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Nigeria Elements Progressive Party (NEPP who) garnered 262 and 119 votes respectively.The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the APC candidate as the winner of the keenly contested election two weeks after the people of the senatorial district went to the poll.This came after the supplementary poll conducted by INEC following the November 16 rerun election which failed to produce a winner.It was said to have been marred by violence and other alleged electoral malpractices.Although the results of the poll favoured Senator Adeyemi who polled 80,118 votes as against Senator Melaye’s 59,548 votes, the returning officer had said that he was constrained by law to declare a winner.He explained that the margin of 20,570 votes between the two candidates was lower than the number of cancelled votes in 53 polling units of the 20 registration.Following the victory of the APC candidate in the rerun poll and upon receiving the certificate of return, Senator Adeyemi will replace Senator Melaye as the lawmaker representing Kogi West senatorial district in the National Assembly.
INEC’s decision to conduct a fresh election in the senatorial district was in line with the order of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which dismissed an appeal filed by Senator Melaye challenging the nullification of his victory on February 23. during the general elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Nov. 30 for the conduct of supplementary and re-run elections for Kogi West Senatorial District and Ajaokuta Federal Constituency respectively. In a statement, Mr Festus Okoye, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, said the decision was taken at the meeting held on Thursday in Abuja. He recalled that at the conclusion of the court-ordered Kogi West Senatorial re-run election on Saturday, supplementary polls were indicated by the Collation/Retuming Officer for the Senatorial District. The affected areas includes 20 Registration Areas, 53 Polling Units and 46,767 Registered Voters spread across seven Local Government Areas of the Senatorial District. “In addition, the court ordered the conduct of Supplementary re-run poll in Ajaokuta Federal Constituency affecting 22 Polling Units.” Okoye said that collation procedures shall be in line with extant Guidelines for Collation at the Supplementary polls. He added that the list of affected registration areas and polling units would be uploaded on INEC website and communicated to the stakeholders in the respective registration areas and polling pnits. “We enjoin all the political parties and stakeholders to cooperate with the commission for conclusive free and credible elections in the affected areas,” Okoye said. INEC declared the Saturday’s senatorial re-run election for Kogi West inconclusive because the margin of win was less than the total cancelled votes. INEC Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Olayide Lawal said the candidate of the APC, Smart Adeyemi polled 80,118 votes while Dino Melaye of the PDP got 59,548. Lawal, however, said that votes were cancelled across 53 polling units in the senatorial district with 46,127 registered voters due to violence and snatching of ballot boxes.

A police Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Mubi North Local Government Area of Adamawa state, Mr. Ahijo Mujeli has been abducted by gunmen.The spokesman of the Police Command, DSP Suleiman Nguroje confirmed to Channels Television that Mr. Mujeli was kidnapped on Tuesday night along Mubi-Maraba road.Mr. Nguroje explained that the DPO was driving in his personal car between 7.30 p.m. to 8:00 pm near the toll-gate when he was abducted.He said sporadic gunshots were heard around the area and the Police were alerted but when they arrived, they met an empty car identified as that of the DPO.DSP Nguroje added that the anti-kidnapping unit and Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Inspector General of Police (IG) have been deployed to the area to trail the suspected kidnappers with a view to rescuing the abducted Police Officer.The police, however, revealed that they are unaware of any demand for Ransom, but have assured that they are doing everything possible to rescue him from his abductors.They called on the public with useful information to his whereabouts should not hesitate to notify the police because there is a financial benefit attached to it.The police also warned that people should avoid moving alone especially at night as that could be very dangerous.

A gang of cattle thieves killed 14 people overnight Sunday in a remote village in Zamfara State, police said, the latest assault in a long-running series of tit-for-tat attacks.Police said the bandits were taking revenge for an earlier killing of nine suspected gang members by local vigilantes in a nearby village in Zamfara on November 3.In the absence of a robust police force and effective judicial system in Nigeria, villagers created vigilante groups to fight off the gangs, but the villagers have since been accused of extra-judicial killings.Zamfara officials struck a deal in July with the bandits to end their attacks and vigilantes to stop extra-judicial killings, but sporadic outbreaks of violence have continued.Zamfara police spokesman Mohammed Shehu said assailants riding motorcycles stormed into a remote village overnight Sunday to Monday, shooting residents and burning homes.As well as the 14 people who were killed, 10 others were injured, Shehu said.For several years, rural communities in the agrarian state have been under siege from gangs of cattle rustlers.The gangs launch their attacks from their camps dotting the Rugu forest — which straddles the states of Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, and Niger.The peace deal had seen the cessation of bandit attacks in Zamfara state, prompting authorities in nearby Katsina state to start similar peace talks with the bandits.However, sporadic outbreaks of violence are still reported. Senator Dino Melaye, on Wednesday, stormed the head office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja, presenting several video evidence upon which he is demanding the cancellation of the recently concluded Kogi West Senatorial election.The lawmaker who was received by officials of the commission said he came to present the pieces of evidence because he knows that he won the poll.He accused the opposition of leading thugs to cart away ballot boxes.Mr. Melaye further stated that he is confident regarding the outcome of the election because he has the results from the polling units.Speaking further about the election, Dino said, “In Egbeda ward, the State Speaker of House of Assembly led thugs to cart away ballot boxes and all these ballot boxes were taken to a designated, all thumb-printed in favour of APC and all these results returned in favour of APC.“All areas where there were killings, there were shootings, helicopters releasing bullets, helicopters releasing teargas, all those areas results were returned.“I won the election because we have the polling units results, I won the election with a wide margin and nobody will take my seat in the National Assembly”.Reacting to claims and counter-claims regarding the alleged role of police officers in marring the elections in the state, Senator Melaye wondered how a few fake policemen could outsmart the thousands deployed for the election exercise.“The Inspector-General of Police yesterday addressed the media, said that there were fake policemen that operated in Kogi State.
