The first Africa-bound grain ship since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February has docked in Pivdennyi port, Ukraine’s infrastructure minister said.

“The cargo ship Brave Commander arrived at the Pivdennyi Sea Port. Very soon [Ukrainian] grain will be delivered to Ethiopia,” Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov wrote on Twitter on Friday.



It will be the first food delivery to Africa under a plan brokered by the UN and Turkey in late July to unblock grain trapped by Russia’s war on Ukraine and bring relief to millions worldwide.




For months, fighting in Ukraine and a Russian blockade of Ukraine’s ports meant that grain produced in Ukraine, one of the world’s key breadbaskets, piled up in silos.

In recent days, several ships carrying grain have left Ukrainian ports under the new deal — but most of those shipments were animal feed and went to Turkey or Western Europe under previous contracts.


UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the ship named Brave Commander will carry its wheat to the Horn of Africa nation of Djibouti, where it will be unloaded and sent on to Ethiopia.

“The wheat will go to the World Food Programme’s operations in Ethiopia, supporting the Horn of Africa drought response as the threat of famine stalks the drought-hit region,” he said.

“It is one of many areas around the world where the near-complete halt of Ukrainian grain and food on the global market has made life even harder for the families already struggling with rising hunger.”

The ship was expected to take on more than 23,000 tonnes, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Infrastructure — still only a tiny portion of the 20 million tonnes of grain languishing in Ukraine.

Ethiopia, along with neighbouring Somalia and Kenya, has been facing the worst drought in four decades in the Horn of Africa. Thousands of people across the region have died from hunger or illness this year.

Forecasts for the coming weeks have indicated that for the first time, a fifth straight rainy season will fail to materialise. Millions of livestock, the basis of many families’ wealth and food security, have died.

“Millions of households will struggle to cope with these shocks” in Ethiopia, according to a new assessment by the Famine Early Warning Systems Network. “Food assistance needs are at record levels, with up to 15 million people in need of [it].”

While one shipment will not solve the crisis, the World Food Programme still heralded it as an “important step” in getting Ukrainian grain out of the country to the worst-affected countries.

An explosion on Thursday evening claimed two lives including a masquerade leaving many others injured in Idoji area of Okene local government council of Kogi State.The incident occurred at the Idoji part of the local government where the Echeane festival, an annual masquerade festival was ongoing.

The Nigerian Army has opened its application portal for the Direct Short Service Commission Course 26/2022.

According to an information released by the army authorities, application, which started on March 25, 2022, will end on May 6, 2022.


Entry Requirement:

All applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

a. Be a Nigerian as defined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

b. Be a male or female between the ages of 20 and 30 years. Medical consultants could be between 25 – 40 years of age by July 2022.

c. Be medically, mentally and physically fit according to NA standards.

d. Be recommended and attested to his/her good character by at least 2 recognizable referees who is either a Local Government Chairman/Secretary or an officer of the Armed Forces not below the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and equivalent or an Assistant Commissioner of Police and above who must hail from the applicant’s state of origin. Passport photographs of referees must be affixed to the letter of attestation.

e. Applicants must submit a letter of Attestation from their former institutions.

f. Measure in height at least 1.68m (for males) and 1.65m (for females).

g. Must not have been convicted by any court of law. Military personnel applying must be free from any disciplinary case and endorsed by the applicant’s Commanding Officer/Commander.

h. Possess at least a first degree with not less than Second Class Lower Division or HND of not less than Lower Credit from any accredited institution of learning.

i. Possess valid birth certificate endorsed by the National Population Commission, Hospital or Local Government Council or valid age declaration.

j. Possess a valid certificate of state of origin.

k. Applicants must possess NYSC discharge certificate or a valid exemption certificate as appropriate.

l. Graduates with professional qualifications must be duly registered by relevant regulating bodies recognized by Nigerian Laws at the commencement of cadet training.

m. Only post secondary academic credentials obtained from 2011 to date will be considered.

n. Applicants must present valid contact addresses and telephone numbers of parent/guardians and Next of Kin.

o. Candidates must not have any bodily inscriptions or tattoos.

p. Candidates must tender all original copies of educational certificates (primary to post secondary).

q. Service personnel must present valid military identity cards and letters of recommendations by their Commanding Officers/Commanders. They must also present valid letter(s) of NA sponsorship to tertiary academic institutions (where applicable). Additionally, they must have served for a period of not less than 5 years in the unit.

A Ukrainian passenger plane with 176 people on board has crashed shortly after take-off from the international airport south of the Iranian capital, Tehran, killing all those aboard.

Ali Khashani, a senior public relations official at Imam Khomeini International Airport, said the Boeing 737 operated by the Ukraine International Airlines (UIA), which was bound for Kiev, went down early Wednesday in the vicinity of Parand, a city in Robat Karim County, Tehran Province.

The plane caught fire after crashing.

According to Kashani, the crash was likely due to technical problems.

Later, Kashani announced that all the 167 passengers and nine crew members of the plane had died in the crash, according to IRNA.



Rescue teams were sent to the site of the crash immediately after the crash.

The head of Iran’s Emergency Medical Services, Pir-Hossein Koulivand, later confirmed to Tasnim news agency that all those on board had been killed.

Koulivand said the fire had been extinguished and emergency crews were now collecting bodies.

Kashani, the public relations official at Imam Khomeini International Airport, said the crash had not affected traffic at the port and that all other flights were taking place according to schedule.

Mansour Darajati, the director general of crisis management at the Tehran Governor’s Office, said the Office’s Crisis Management Committee would shortly convene to investigate the crash of the Boeing 737.

TEHRAN, Iran — A Ukrainian airplane carrying at least 170 people crashed Wednesday near an airport in the capital, Tehran, state TV reported. There was no immediate word on casualties.

The plane had taken off from Imam Khomeini International Airport, the report said. The crash is suspected to have been caused by mechanical issues, it added, without elaborating.

An investigation team was at the site of the crash in southwestern outskirts of Tehran, civil aviation spokesman Reza Jafarzadeh said.

“After taking off from Imam Khomeini international airport it crashed between Parand and Shahriar," Jafarzadeh said. “An investigation team from the national aviation department was dispatched to the location after the news was announced.”
