In an interview with Channels Television on Saturday, June 13th 2026, President Bola Tinubu's economic advisor, Tope Fasua, has defended the measures taken by the present administration, saying that many Nigerians dwell too much on problems and too little on the gains made by the present administration.

Despite the fact that rising fuel and petrol costs have been a problem, Fasua stated in a televised interview that the government's measures had brought about tangible benefits nationwide.

The rise in workers' wages is one of the most important accomplishments, in his opinion. "Many people in the private sector are earning double, triple, or even quadruple what they earned a few years ago," he stated, adding, "the minimum wage has moved from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000."

According to Fasua, when people talk about the economy, they usually focus on the bad times and ignore the good times.

Although he acknowledged that economic reforms have caused some discomfort in the near term, he insisted that these changes have ultimately led to better government finances and new prospects.

State governments have made improvements to salary payments, according to the presidential adviser.

He recalled a time when states owed salaries for twelve to eighteen months, bringing up an incident from years past when workers in multiple jurisdictions experienced lengthy delays. For a long time, some workers were getting half pay.

He pointed out that things have changed dramatically since the Tinubu administration took office, highlighting how states can now afford to pay their bills. Unlike in the past, he asserted that states are not owed salaries now.

Fasua went on to commend the administration's initiatives to empower local governments and enhance grassroots leadership. He asserts that a growing number of local councils are being granted direct funding, which empowers them to tackle development issues within their areas.

That "the federal government has empowered both the states and the local governments" was his final statement. Better development outcomes should be the result of resources being brought closer to the people.

Rejecting claims that economic hardship is universal, Fasua argued that broad statements suggesting that all Nigerians are suffering do not reflect the full picture. “I have not seen the empirical evidence that everybody is suffering,” he said.

He conceded that there are real economic problems, but he insisted that many Nigerians are reaping the benefits of new opportunities made possible by reforms and policies implemented by the administration.

Fasua argued that people should look at the economy with a more nuanced perspective, highlighting that achievements should be acknowledged alongside difficulties.

He argues that in order to bring about long-term economic change, one must be patient, keep reforming, and be ready to celebrate successes when they happen.
