If there is one sector in Nigeria that is showing significant improvement, it is the power sector. The repairs carried out on infrastructure by the Ministry of power under Fashola is bearing fruits. What is more impressive is that fact that Generation has been steady. 4,000MW is not enough to meet demand but the consistency is back after power was severely disrupted by the bombing of installations in february 2016. Security is key to boosting electricity supply and we all have to play our part. We still need significant investment in boosting gas infrastructure and diversifying the energy mix. cc:Lalasticlala, mynd44 The graph below is from: http://www.nsong.org/PerformanceChart.aspx 3 Likes 1 Share

Oil makes up only 13% of Nigeria's GDP but over 70% of government's revenue. With the right structures, It is not inconceivable that oil will someday be less relevant in national discourse. Also, with concerns over climate change, oil will become less relevant in the coming decades. When that happens, the Niger Delta will still be polluted not just by the actions of the oil majors but by the stupidity of Niger Delta youths, who can not think of the consequences of their narrow sighted actions. Perhaps, they are seeking another amnesty programme. The cleanup of Ogoni land is billed to begin in June. It will take 25-30 years to complete. The effects of these blown pipelines will be felt not by the rest of Nigeria but by the children of the vandals. 10 Likes |

babafemi1000: Initial capital cost is high. To power a standard duplex with batteries, you will be talking 5-10 million. Maybe more.. But once it is installed, it can last for 30 years with little or no maintenance. Batteries might be changed every 10-15 years depending but your panels will provide you power for a long time. 1 Like |
This is another good development that we all need to support. However, may I ask why the consideration for Northern Nigeria alone? What happens to the SE, SS & SW? The potential for solar energy is all over Nigeria and if we can encourage mass production for domestic use, if will free considerable Mega Watts for Industrial use especially in SW and SE. May I therefore suggest partnership with states and LG to drive this initiative in as much as you are sure of the quality of the products to be supplied. Finally, what is/are the environment impact and health risks of using solar panels or power?! God bless Nigeria.
Nigeria's north west and North East have the biggest need for this so I believe starting in the North is a great idea. Those areas have the lowest electricity access in Nigeria. I am certain that a successful business model will be replicated in other regions with time. As long as the products are EU certified, then they should be fine. We have had problems with poor quality materials brought into the country especially from China. This is a business, I think support from state government or LG should only be in creating the right environment. Solar panels have no negative environmental impact. 3 Likes |

This makes complete sense and opens up a great business opportunity. Especially in Northern Nigeria where transmission infrastructure is poor. Solar PV, Pay as you go will be very popular soon if this works out. cc: Lalasticlala, mynd44 8 Likes |

International solar initiative to drive affordable power access in Nigeria Netherlands-based off-grid electricity provider, Nova-Lumos, has been awarded a $218,745 grant from the SolarNigeria Programme (SNP), an initiative of the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID), implemented by Adam Smith International. The partnership between Nova-Lumos and SNP will help accelerate an estimated 90 million off-grid homes and small businesses in northern Nigeria, to access clean and affordable electricity. Solar initiative connected to pay-as-you-go system In a company statement, Nova-Lumos explained that this system provides a home with a solar panel linked to an indoor connections unit, which enables the customer to access significant amounts of power on demand, day or night. “With mobile payments, users transfer small amounts via SMS for the affordable, pay-as-you-go system. “The Nova-Lumos model is highly scalable, in large part due to its partnership with MTN, Nigeria’s largest cellular provider, which enables the service to expand across all parts of Nigeria,” the company explained. Leigh Vial, head of consumer markets for SolarNigeria explained: “Millions of Nigerian households could today save money while enjoying bright light and clean power using solar instead of kerosene lanterns and small generators. So why do they not already use it? “They need someone trustworthy to make quality solar products available to them in their village, and they need to be able to pay for it over time. This requires capable companies to invest in the market, to reach the customers, and to enable financing.” Securing financial grants The company explained that this SolarNigeria grant, complements the recent $15 million financing the company secured from the US Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), the US government’s development finance institution, which is being used to fund the deployment of over 75,000 systems across Nigeria in 2016. Adding that the Nova-Lumos finance constitutes the largest OPIC investment to the off-grid power sector in Africa. David Vortman, CEO and Co-Founder at Nova-Lumos, said: “We are grateful for the grant from SolarNigeria and excited about this relationship with DFID, which will enable us to accelerate our growth in northern Nigeria and improve millions of lives.” He added: “Backing from an institution such as DFID provides a vote of confidence in Nova-Lumos’s innovative technology and our unique business model. We look forward to expanding our impact in Nigeria and elsewhere on the continent.” http://www.esi-africa.com/news/international-solar-initiative-to-drive-affordable-power-access-in-nigeria/ 3 Likes 1 Share |

xelly: Gas supply improved... Nigeria has a generation capacity of 7,000MW but does not have the capacity to supply gas reliably to all plants. The singular reason for improved power during Buhari's early months was improved gas supply. 2 Likes |

BeeBeeOoh: Actually, Buhari on average has had better power supply. And was able to hit 5,000Mw beating the previous record of 4,500MW. For most of 2014- early 2015, we struggled to maintain 2,500 MW-3000MW. I know, because i actually keep track of these things. Before the crash of Forcados gas supply, Nigeria had maintained an average of above 4,000MW. And once the repairs are finished, power will improve. GEJ is not president anymore, get over it. I am not a 'Buhari lover' but comments like yours show that you know little or nothing about the power sector. 3 Likes |

spacyzuma: It is not just government. Citizens are the ones vandalizing electricity infrastructure. Solar and Small hydro mini grids are areas of opportunity especially for areas disconnected from the grid. Instead of investing money in building transmission infrastructure, perhaps we can bring energy services to people quicker by developing alternative energy resources. i am worried about what seems to be Nigeria's relentless drive towards nuclear energy. I know there is a lot of work, going on in the Nigerian power sector. Let's hope, it begins to bear fruits. |
