J12: Anyone who knows Arthur Eze should also know that he doesn't mince his words. Ochendo and his Ikuku of a son should be ashamed of themselves. The governor made the mistake of inviting him for the abia day celebration |

It was a bad day for Governor Theodore Amaefule Orji, as he assembled a battery of illustrious personalities to celebrate the 23rd anniversary of the creation of Abia State in Umuahia last Wednesday. Rather than effusive praises, what came the way of the governor were a censure from no less a person than multi-billionaire, Chief Arthur Eze, who told the gathering dead pan that, “Abia State stinks.” Venue was the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia, the state capital, where the governor had gathered illustrious citizens of the state, some of whom were to be given awards to mark the 23rd anniversary. In the session of comments that preceded the awards ceremony, Chief Eze was recognised to speak, and what he said, sent cold chill running down the spines of majority of the people, particularly the governor. “Abia is stinking,” Eze, believed to have the largest oil bloc in Africa, bellowed. The audience was stupefied in shock, but more was to come. “Right from the Abia Tower in Umuahia, the rot hits you. Abia State is now the dirtiest in the country. Garbage every where, along with bad roads. The people are really suffering, and you see it in their faces. Are there no elders in Abia again? If so, what are they doing? What are the senators, the members of House of Representatives and other elected people doing? Nothing.” Then, pointedly, Chief Eze told the governor: “If you do not know what to do again, please write to President Goodluck Jonathan, and let him come to your aid. Abia State needs help.” Having given the gathering a piece of his mind, Eze dropped the microphone on the floor, and walked out. It was a dazed Governor Orji who jerked himself out of stupor, and tried to rationalise what Arthur Eze had said. He told the crowd that the man was referring to the collapsed Port Harcourt / Aba Expressway, which is a federal road. But the explanation sounded hollow to the governor himself, and after some time, he left the venue of the ceremony, without taking questions from journalists, as such occasion would have demanded. Speaking on the incident, an associate of Chief Eze, told Daily Sun that the state of Abia State was really dispiriting, with decay and despondency everywhere. “I am sure most of the dignitaries quietly agreed with Chief Eze, only that they could not do so openly. One must commend Chief Eze’s courage for being bold enough to speak out. Not many people can do so today. In Abia State today, there is the son of one of the elected officials, called The Wind, who is like a terror. He silences all opposition and deals ruthlessly with anyone in opposition to the government. So, not many people can speak out. But we must commend Chief Eze for his boldness and conviction.” http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=79662

Dr Kenneth Nwosu, a former Executive Director, National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI) Umudike, Abia State and currently Abia Commissioner for Agriculture is dead. He was Wednesday night shot by gunmen. Nwosu was on his way back to his Olokoro Village home in Umuahia South Local Council during the time (around 8.05pm) of the incident at Umuajata/ Amakamma road by Stella Inter- Communication. Abia State Police Command spokesman, Mr. Geoffrey Ogbonna who confirmed incident said the victim shot several times in the stomach with bullets running through his intestines. According to police spokesman, Nwosu was overtaken by gunmen in a Toyota Camry car who opened fire, spraying him with bullets before fleeing. In Ogbonna’s words , “The gunmen started shooting at him immediately and bullet touched his intestines. They continued shooting indiscriminately before escaping.” Asked whether the assailants were assassins, kidnappers or robbers, Ogbonna said, “From the look of things it was obvious they had a hidden agenda as they did not bother to remove any thing from him or collect his car , but investigations will unravel their real motive”. Nwosu was rushed to Abia State Specialist Hospital where doctors battled to save his life. Dr. Augustus Mbanaso, Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital told reporters Nwosu was seriously injured at his intestines and femur. ”His intestines were shattered and his blood pressure was vey low when they brought him but we managed him till a level where surgery could be carried out.” Dr. Mbanaso said. Dr Kenneth Nwosu died this morning. May his soul R.I.P

Abia is a tough one.... Remember heavy weights like Enyinnaya Abaribe |
Billionaire business mogul and oil magnate, Dr Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah (USO), on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, ended the speculations about his governorship ambition. On that bright, sunny afternoon, the lanky chattered accountant and President of Masters Energy took a bold step by visiting the Abia State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat on Finbarrs’ Road, Umuahia. There, he informed members of the party executive committee (EXCO) of his intention to contest for the governorship position of the state come 2015. He was accompanied on the visit by notable Abia political figures, including Chief Empire Kanu, a former Nigerian Ambassador to Argentina, Chief Emeka Atuma, a former member of House of Representatives, Dr Maxwell Ndukwe Adindu, a former Minority Leader of Abia State House of Assembly and a former member of the state executive council, amongst others. Also present were teeming members of five Pro-Uche Ogah groups. As the crowd settled down, a man simply introduced as Okosisi (Iroko tree) Obingwa, was invited to address the audience. Ironically, Obingwa, hypothetically, parades the highest number of potential governorship hopefuls. Since the state governor, Chief Theodore Orji, hinted that it would be just to allow Abia South senatorial zone (Ukwa/Ngwa political bloc) to produce the next governor of the state, 98 per cent of those being speculated to be interested in grabbing the exalted seat come from Obingwa. But Okosisi dismissed them, saying that Ogah, who comes from Uturu in Isuikwuato local government area -which is in Abia North Senatorilal zone, was a better material than all the gladiators from his home council. He said most of them have held public and elective offices which they failed to use to improve the welfare of their people, adding that they would not do better if trusted with the task of governing the state. He posited that Ogah, a philanthropist of immense proportions and dimensions, would take Abia to greater heights. He said Abia PDP was lucky to have Ogah in its fold, stressing that had he declared his interest to vie for the exalted governorship seat on the platform of another party, PDP would have found him a hard nut to crack. “Give power to Uche Ogah and it will be well with Abia, it will be well with us,” he submitted. Next, Ambassador Empire Kanu, introduced as leader of the Uche Ogah delegation, was invited to address the gathering. “We are here,” he said, “because of Dr Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah. We have come to let you know of his aspiration to contest for governorship in 2015 in Abia state.” Kanu continued “His name is divine because he has not been entirely chosen by chance but by epistemological origin. Dr. Uchechukwu Ogah has a divine calling to take over the mantle of leadership from our extra-ordinary performing governor of our state, Dr. T.A.Orji.” Inviting his principal to personally state their mission himself, Kanu said “I will want to at this point to invite our principal to speak for himself and by himself. I have the singular honour to call on the President of Masters Energy Group, with 13 subsidiary companies, a chartered accountant, an acclaimed banker, an astute business mogul in the class of Dangote, a philanthropist of the highest order, a Christian, an Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), the sensational young man from Uturu in Isuikwuato LGA, Dr. Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah, to speak to you.” Amidst a thunderous ovation, Ogah took it from there, thrilling the crowd with his sonorous voice, eloquence and thoughtful logic. “I am most delighted, most humbled to be here today,” he began. “Today is part of what we do; we have been going around consulting. On the day of our declaration, we will let you know. This is just part of our routine consultation. And for the fact that we are here, we have come to consult with the members of the exco of PDP in Abia state. And I want to say, thank you for the opportunity you have given to us. Thank you for receiving us. We are sorry for inconveniencing you with a large crowd of people that are here but we appreciate you because in your normal self as a father, you will accommodate everybody. So, we want to thank you so much and God bless you.”

prof800: The Vulture And The Starving Child.!Why are u sighing? Are u normal. |
In March 1993, photographer Kevin Carter made a trip to southern Sudan, where he took now iconic photo of a vulture preying upon an emaciated Sudanese toddler near the village of Ayod. Carter said he waited about 20 minutes, hoping that the vulture would spread its wings. It didn’t. Carter snapped the haunting photograph and chased the vulture away. (The parents of the girl were busy taking food from the same UN plane Carter took to Ayod). The photograph was sold to The New York Times where it appeared for the first time on March 26, 1993 as ‘metaphor for Africa’s despair’. Practically overnight hundreds of people contacted the newspaper to ask whether the child had survived, leading the newspaper to run an unusual special editor’s note saying the girl had enough strength to walk away from the vulture, but that her ultimate fate was unknown. Journalists in the Sudan were told not to touch the famine victims, because of the risk of transmitting disease, but Carter came under criticism for not helping the girl. ”The man adjusting his lens to take just the right frame of her suffering might just as well be a predator, another vulture on the scene,” read one editorial. Carter eventually won the Pulitzer Prize for this photo, but he couldn’t enjoy it. “I’m really, really sorry I didn’t pick the child up,” he confided in a friend. Consumed with the violence he’d witnessed, and haunted by the questions as to the little girl’s fate, he committed suicide three months later

Controversy has continued to trail Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan’s alleged N250 million sponsorship of 16 private-sector journalists to London for a training on "Investigative Joirnalism" which has been described as a jamboree. This comes as a crisis is currently brewing in the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), which could lead to the removal of its Chairman, Mr Norbert Chiazor, over the selection of the reporters for the London training. Members of the NUJ in the state have condemned in strong terms the involvement of Mr. Chiazor, describing it as a sell-out, clandestine and compromise, stressing that the “corrupt” manner he led the selected private journalists to the jamboree said to be holding at the Thomson Reuters Foundation in London is an impeachable offence. SaharaReporters investigations show that the state government in its bid to buy the media, hiding under its human capital development agenda, allegedly approved a whooping N250 million for the training of the 16 journalists in London for the second time. Last year, the council chairman had risked impeachment following his involvement in controversial and corrupt circumstances with the state government to take 12 journalists in state for a similar jamboree at the Reuters/ Thompson Foundation in London, United Kingdom. Before now, the state chairman of the union has been accused by members of the NUJ in the state of corruption, flagrant disregard of the union's constitution, lack of transparency, respect for members, romance with government to the detriment of members, as well as intimidation and harassment of members. It was reliably gathered that the embattled NUJ state chairman had reached an alleged deal with the state government to be sponsoring selected private sector journalists abroad for jamborees in the name of training so as to avoid any form of bad press throughout the reign of the administration. According to a release from the office of the state Information Commissioner, Mr. Chike Ogeah, 16 journalists from the print and electronic media in the state have commenced a one-week training at the world renowned Thomson Reuters Institute in London under the sponsorship of the state government with the theme “Investigative Journalism” focusing on ethics and the principles of investigation in news writing. Ogeah confirmed that the “Training is the second to be sponsored by the Delta State Government. Last year, 12 journalists were at the Thomson Reuters Institute for one-week training on News Writing.” He said Governor Uduaghan, who gave his approval for the training, is of the belief that it was in line with his administration’s programme of human capital development. It was revealed that apart from the 16 state- sponsored journalists, others including the General Manager of the state-owned Pointer Newspapers, Mr. Bioseh Iwobi, whose tenure has elapsed, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Mr. Austin Mowah due for retirement by 28th of this month, the special assistant and personal assistant to the commissioner led by Ogeah himself left the shores of the country on Sunday, September 22, 2013 for the jamboree in London which sources said would last for two weeks. According to a Government House member of staff, "The governor is at good wasting public funds. Some of the persons on the list were the same persons who attended the first jamboree in London. Mowah, Ogeah, Chiazor, SA to the commissioner and few others currently in London were among the first set.” However, a group in the state chapel under the auspices of “Chapel Leaders Forum” were said to have started collating signatories towards the removal of the chairman. It was reliably gathered that the chapel leadership shall be meeting Wednesday to decide the fate of the embattled chairman. According to the members, the chairman has been running the union like a private empire as well as his failure to hold monthly congresses which has breached Article F 6a of the union which states inter alia that “the state congress shall meet monthly.” Members of group are also not happy that Article 2 c has also been breached several times by the Norbert Chiazor-led executive as it has failed to “encourage the participation of members in decision making processes in the union.” The chapel's leadership and it's members were quick to mention the 2012 edition of the Press Week organized by the Council where the issue was not discussed at SEC or Congress before a committee was set up and inaugurated by the council. “This led to a subtle boycott of the lecture aspect of the Week where Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan despite all efforts to flag-off the ceremony had to mandate his Deputy, Prof. Amos Utuama (SAN) to represent him due to the poor turnout of journalists for the event. Lagos-based lawyer and gubernatorial aspirant in Delta State, Festus Keyamo who delivered the lecture spoke to a hall that had less than 10 per cent of practising journalists in attendance,” a reporter who is in the know of what is going on in the union, but craved anonymity said. “Also, during the 2012 edition of the Press Week, despite Comrade Chiazor informing members of SEC that the National Executive Council of the NUJ approved that only five persons be given awards during the Award Nite, more than eight persons bagged the NUJ, Delta State Council awards prompting questions as to 'how much was paid for the awards?' to be asked and the disregards of the order by NEC," another reporter lamented. A member of the Chiazor-led executive also lamented that the NUJ in the state are worried that the NEC of the Union may not do anything against Chiazor as he has at several ocassions boasted that “I put Comrade Garba (NUJ National President, Comrade Mohammed Garba) there, I followed him throughout his campaign and if you are going to complain, who will you complain to?” Meanwhile, a pressure group reacting to the alleged wastefulness of the state funds by the state government, Liberate Delta Peoples’ Movement, has condemned in strong terms Uduaghan’s sponsorship of the 16 reporters to the London training. In a statement issued by the group’s spokesman, Mr. Cadre Drake, titled “Delta Condemned Uduaghan For Wasting Delta State Funds On 16 Private Sector Journalists For Reuters Course In London” and made available to SaharaReporters said, “Members of the group have expressed great shock and disappointment to hear that this current course was the ‘second’ such sponsorship of journalists from the state coffers. Liberate believes that it is not the business of Delta State to act as the human resources department of privately owned media houses. “In addition, the group affirms its strong support for the principal of ‘freedom of the press’ and it is sad that even the media house could not see how this might compromise their reputation as independent press. The group has also raised concerns about Reuters accepting these candidates on their course and have written to Reuters to tender a formal complaint. “Uduaghan is taking the ordinary citizen of Delta State for granted by the unadulterated waste of the State funds. Even if this was a good idea, with more 18 people travelling to UK, it would have been significantly cheaper to invite Reuters to Warri. The saddest part is the incompetence of the Uduaghan administration is that it’s not prone to taking correction and listening to good advice; the people deserve more information from the Commissioner of Information”. |
I would want to offer my own advice. First, to the President: I want you, sir, to openly intervene in the crisis in Rivers State. By openly endorsing the Jang faction, it may be safe to conclude that you are incensed with Governor Amaechi. And your anger is natural. I know the governor must have done certain things that portrayed your highly-exalted office in bad light, making you take extreme measures to call him to order. Remember, Mr. President, to err is human and to forgive is divine. Rotimi Amaechi is not a match to you in any way. Fighting him with all the might of your office is tantamount to killing a fly with a sledgehammer. You have the 36 states, plus the Federal Capital Territory as your constituency. Singling one of them out for such a fight is not healthy and square. I recall with nostalgia the circumstances that led to your emergence as President and they make me feel bad at the protraction of the mess in Rivers State. Mr. President, you are a child of circumstance, and should always see yourself in that light. My fear is that unless you took urgent steps to restore normalcy to Rivers State, the ongoing crisis may lead to dire consequences for the state and our nation. I am sure you can invite the governor and talk sense into him as your citizen instead of the current approach of chastising him. Your consideration to intervene should be driven by the love you have for the people of Rivers State, from where Bayelsa State was carved out. So, no matter the geographical differences, Rivers and Bayelsa States are one. Mr. President, some of those fighting Amaechi with or in your name are doing so to advance their selfish political cause and not necessarily that they are loyal to you or love you. Human beings are very funny and sly: they stand by somebody when the going is fine and dump him as soon as things turn sour. If the ‘war’ in Rivers State is because of your aspiration in 2015, then there is an urgent need to distance yourself from it. You should know that 2015 is still in the bowels of history. It is only God that can determine what will happen. If it is the will of God you will be President in 2015 and beyond, then there is nothing anybody can do about it. I know deep inside me, sir, that the goings-on in Rivers State are quietly troubling your heart, because they are unnecessary distractions. You have enough troubles on your hands and numerous challenges to tackle. Then, why add Rivers State to the list? Seeing the state of emergency you declared in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa through requires total concentration. Removing Amaechi as governor will not add to or remove anything from your office, which is already exalted. God placed you where you are today out of His kindness – to make you a leading light to the world. So, it behoves you to show similar kindness to others, especially those that offended you. I challenge you to restore normalcy in Rivers State today and see if God will not surprise you with an uncommon favour. To Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, this is the time to wear your thinking cap and beat a retreat fast. There is no need squabbling with the President, because it is a battle you cannot win. The office of the President of Nigeria carries enormous powers, and when these powers are evoked, they crush anybody in their trail. You should not look at the President as a former deputy governor and vice president. Level has changed. He is now the President and Commander- In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He has an unfathomable capacity to make life miserable for you. Forget all the noise your supporters are making: they will desert you the moment you cease to be governor. From the support you have received from the state legislature, members of the National Assembly from your state and other groups, it is certain you are liked and very popular. But that is so long you remain the governor and control tangible financial resources. Bear in mind that the forces massed against you are formidable. Think over all that has happened so far and you will discover to your consternation that your state is suffering from the burden of the crisis. Your priority should be to leave lasting legacies for which generations unborn will remember you. That being the case, you should choose between your personal interests and that of the Rivers State people. They accuse you of harbouring a vice- presidential ambition. Though there is nothing wrong in that. Nonetheless, you should dump that if it makes some people uncomfortable. Think about your future, safety of your family and the welfare of the people of Rivers State who would be collaterally affected should anything untoward happen to you. God forbid! God has been gracious to you – raising you from grass to grace. You had been Mayor of Port Harcourt, Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly during the tenure of Peter Odili as governor, and now a two-term governor. What else do you want? If it is the will of God, you would be vice president or president, nobody can stop you. They said you contested for a second term as chairman of NGF against your party’s directive. If that is true, then, it was wrong. So long you remain a PDP governor, you must subject yourself to your party’s directives. If you want to do things your own way, the proper thing to do is to found your own party or resign from PDP. Your suspension is a prelude to a stiffer action against you, which you may find unpalatable. As your name, ‘Chibuike’ (God is my strength) goes, all will be well with you if you hearken to the voice of reason. God will desert you the moment you fail to listen to the small still voice. Now to those that fuel the crisis in Rivers State: You should search your conscience and desist from fomenting trouble. If you love President Jonathan as you openly profess, then you have a responsibility to make him succeed. And one of the ways to attain this objective is to make peace between him and his perceived adversaries. You should, for once, bury your selfishness and work for peace in Rivers State. Let me make it very clear: the crisis in Rivers State will not lead to victory for either President Jonathan or Governor Amaechi or their teeming supporters; rather it will end up tearing the entire nation apart, because those involved in the fight are too powerful and connected to be ignored, and their tentacles stretch to as far as Damataru and Jigawa in the North, Lagos and Ogbomosho in the West, Abakaliki and Awka in the East, and Calabar and Yenagoa in the South.” |
At last, the real reason why Diamond Bank, a new generation bank in Nigeria has been engulfed in too many controversies, allegations and counter allegations, lately, has been discovered. Recall that penultimate week, some contract staffers of the bank took to the streets of Lagos to protest against an alleged unfair treatment meted out to them by their employer, the workers claimed that despite the fact that taxes were constantly deducted from their salaries, there were no hard facts to back up such payments alongside several other allegations of fraud that rocked the bank in recent times. According to feelers emerging into our ears, Mr. Alex Otti, the Managing Director of Diamond Bank Plc is allegedly plotting to become next governor of Abia State. Feelers reaching us have it that he now pays more attention to the governorship project; even sometimes at the detriment of his bank job.A source who claims to be in the know informed us that Otti enjoys the blessings of the incumbent governor, Chief Theodore Ahamefula Orji, which explains why he is pursuing his ambition with vigour and so much vitality. Besides working underground at the moment to actualize his dream, creating a robust image of him in the eyes of the people has equally begun. Two of these moves that readily come to mind are his recent conferment with an honorary doctorate by the University of Nigeria Nsukka and also his decoration as the Banker Of The Year by Prince Emeka Obasi’s Business Hallmark Newspapers. Other media stunts are also daily being pulled for him, the reason he’s now in the media more than before.Hitherto an Executive Director with First Bank of Nigeria Plc, the first class graduate of the University of Port-Harcourt (Economics) was made the MD/CEO of Diamond Bank in March 2011, following the exit of the former MD, Mr. Emeka Onwuka. He began his banking career with the defunct Nigerian International Bank Ltd. From there he moved over to Nigerian Intercontinental Merchant Bank, the United Bank for Africa, First Bank and now Diamond Bank. One of the staffers in their Corporate Affairs Department whom we spoke to on Thursday, January 31, 2013, Tobechukwu Okoli told us that he was not authorized to speak on the matter when contacted. |
At last, the real reason why Diamond Bank, a new generation bank in Nigeria has been engulfed in too many controversies, allegations and counter allegations, lately, has been discovered. There was a certain woman who so wanted a child. When the child finally came, she named him, ‘Eureka!’, complete with the exclamation mark. Alright, I made that up in the shower this morning while thinking of Archimedes principle, but like me, many of us have names with profound stories behind them. An incident that happened at your birth, a point to be proved, or your taking after a deceased person in looks, could get you saddled with a thing as permanent as a name. Here’s the tale behind mine. My mother came from a household of many female children and naturally, she didn’t want a replica of that situation when starting her own home. The first tot came to her and it was female. Well, she was not perturbed since it is general belief where I grew up that when a girl-child comes first, it spelt good fortune for the family. Two and half years later, on a Thursday night in April, the throes of labor overtook her and I slinked out. She said I came with no hassles as the first. Just qui-et-ly. And behold, another girl. She needed a name deep enough to console her. And voila! That is how my name came about. ‘Ucheoma’ is an igbo name that means, ‘Good thoughts’. I can almost read her mind as she lay on that hospital bed, exhausted: Though this is not what I wanted, though I desired a male child, Providence still bears good thoughts towards to me. What a consolation, mother! So here I am, bearing my mother’s hopeful proclamation decades after. Anyway, her faith did prevail. The next was male. Some ‘I-wanted-a-boy-but-I-got-a-girl’ kind of names are not as prophetic and fraught with hope as mine, though. I have a friend whose name is Obumneke. The name is a question: ‘Am I the creator?’; a question asked in defiance by a mother to her angry husband after he stormed out of the hospital room on discovering that this was another female child, the fourth in succession. My friend introduces herself with a different name now. Rewind to twentieth century. Some Igbo names were highly outrageous. Example: my grandmother’s-Nwangaji, meaning, The child of spoon. Sounds like an Indian name. Tales I gathered have it that her birth brought the usage of spoons to her family. What a fortune that was to the peasants! Some of her peers in the village have funnier names like Nwakaigwe, meaning, A child is superior to a bicycle. Perhaps a neighbor or a co-wife was bent on oppressing the mother with her new bicycle, ringing the bells time and again to the pregnant mother’s envy. When the baby comes, the mother wants to meet the challenge. What better way is there to confront the oppressor than with a befitting name? So Nwakaigwe, neighbor! You have an elegant but cold bicycle but look here, I have a child! A child to coo; a child to suckle on me . A child to take care of me in my old age, child who will buy me even this very bicycle you trouble my sleep with! A child, what can be compared to that? But with all said, I believe that in all the gifts I have received from my mother, my name comes first on the list. It is deep and thoughtful and it serves as a consolation to me whenever I desperately want a thing but it eludes me. When I am asked what my name means, to make it quick and easy for the quester, I say, Good thinking, good product, (thanks to Toyota). And I don’t get it when some folks ask me, don’t you have an English name. What? My name is sufficient for me! |
slimghost: And your point is? Its obvious you have comprehension problem. Am not disputing the validity of the election exercise, all i asked was "how did Amaechi become the NGF chairman in the first place?" but i guess you cant answer that. FYI, dude came there as a consensus candidate as no election was held (the constitution they adopted had no room for elections). But guess what, the power drunk fool rushed and amended the constitution giving room for elections and re-election without the consent of all the governors. Truth is, he came as a consensus candidate and now Jang is the NGF chairman as a consensus candidate too. Let him deal with it. One problem i have with you is that you always let your hatred for GEJ becloud your sense of reasoning. Why is GEj turning the position of NGF chairman into a powerful deal..... He should invest this power into working fir the country and giving we Nigerians more reasons to reelect him. What was the need of renting an office in Maitama as office. Careless spending. Was it a priority? Will it broker peace. This is suppose to be reconciliation time and If GEJ continues this witch hunting. He may end up receiving a shock. This is democracy not military era |

Views: 184About 30 per cent of journalists working with Nigeria’s leading tabloid chain The Sun will likely lose their jobs in an impending downsizing exercise, News Express can report this morning. The bad news came last Tuesday, April 23, when Sun Publisher, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, paid a surprise visit to the paper’s headquarters in Apapa, Lagos, South-West Nigeria. When Kalu, a businessman and immediate past governor of Abia State, South-East Nigeria, stepped into the premises around 2:00 p.m. Nigerian time (around 13 hours GMT) perceptive Sun workers knew there was a problem. Reason: He is not known to come around that time but usually visited late on Saturday night or before noon on Sunday when there are not many workers around.During his Tuesday visit, Kalu exchanged pleasantries with those who saw him and briskly walked upstairs to hold a meeting with the paper’s top management staff. Shortly afterwards, Deputy Managing Director/Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Femi Adesina, came downstairs and called Mr. Philip Nwosu, Chairman of the local chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists. (NUJ). Nwosu was informed that the publisher believes The Sun to be over-staffed and had advised the management to check the staff strength of other newspaper in the country.News Express learnt that about 30 per cent of Sun journalists may be affected in the downsizing exercise at the paper which just celebrated its tenth anniversary with fanfare. Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Tony Onyima, neither confirmed nor denied the story, telling News Express on phone: “You are a journalist; why don’t you wait till it happens?” Prodded further, he accused the reporter of having made up his mind and then cut the line, saying: “Don’t call me again!”As exclusively reported yesterday by News Express, four Sun chiefs – Editorial Board Chairman, Dr. Amanze Obi; Executive Director, Technical, Alan Jones; Executive Director, Marketing, Paul Onyia; and Principal Human Resource Manager, Patrick Enilama – are also on their way out on Orji Uzor Kalu's orders.
