Victory for ASUU, our education and the oppressed masses of this dear country by the PDP oppressors. Where are thy accusers, Wike, Okupe, Okonjo etc. I said it earlier that the FG will loose the battle because they were on the wrong side of justice and reasoning. Thank God they did not continue on the path of error. If they have done the needful, our students would not have stayed at home this long. I hope GEJ has learnt some lessons in leadership. If I were him, that man Wike will pay for this embarassment to my government. |

By Wole Mosadomi Minna- Niger state Governor Dr. Babangida Aliyu may have finally dumped the G7 just as he has given reasons why he did not defect along with the 5 from the G7 governors to APC saying, “our mission had been to reform the PDP and put it on the right track and not to defect to any other party. He said his decision to remain in PDP to fight on should therefore not been seen as a betrayal of his other colleagues who have already defected to All Progressive Congress (APC). According to him, “I only led the so called G7 as a result of a reform we were looking for in our party. The idea was not to leave our party (PDP); The idea was to reform it and fight to a logical conclusion before taken our final decision and since the fight is still on, there is no point of decamping.” Governor Aliyu also explained that his continuous stay in PDP is not a personal decision but the decision of his people in the state and there is no way he would take such gigantic step without consulting them. “The fight is not about me, it is not a one man show, it is not about my ambition. It is about my people. There is no way I will take any decision without coming back to my people to seek for their views. Majority of my people prefer that we stay in PDP and we will stay and make it work,” Governor Aliyu declared. The governor who made his stand non while receiving members of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) led by the Country Vice President, Barrister Hauwa Shekarau during courtesy visit at government house Minna yesterday said the decision of his colleagues to joint the APC was their personal decision while his decision to also remain in PDP is also personal. “ The decisions of my colleagues to join APC is highly respected and I respect their decisions and they should also respect my own decision too to remain in PDP. “If along the line of the struggle, some people find it more expedite to leave the party, that is their decision and I respect that. Those of us who felt we still need a reform and we felt that we should remain, I think our views and actions should also be respected.” The governor threw his weight behind the idea of a two party system in the country adding that it would put an end to political prostitution in the country. “For us in Niger state, we welcome the development of two parties in this country rather than having so many parties and end up creating more political prostitutes but if we have two parties, we would know how these things can play and control it.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/12/gov-aliyu-states-reasons-moving-apc/ |

Freedom fighter, statesman, moral compass and South Africa’s symbol of the struggle against racial oppression. That was Nelson Mandela, who emerged from prison after 27 years to lead his country out of decades of apartheid. Here are some of his inspiring quotes: -“No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite. -“There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires. -“Our struggle for freedom and justice was a collective effort…it is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it. -“Out of the experience of an extraordinary human disaster that lasted too long, must be born a society of which all humanity will be proud. -“We understand it still that there is no easy road to freedom. We know it well that none of us acting alone can acheive success. We must therefore act together as a united people, for national reconciliation, for nation building, for the birth of a new world. _“To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity. To impose on them a wretched life of hunger and deprivation is to dehumanize them. But such has been the terrible fate of all black persons in our country under the system of apartheid. -“People may say to spend 27 years in prison you have wasted your life. But the greatest thing for a politician is whether the ideas to which you’ve committed your life are still alive, whether these ideas are likely to triumph in the end, and everything that happened showed that we have not sacrificed in vain. -“I came to accept that I have no right whatsoever to judge others in terms of my own customs, however much I may be proud of such customs. -“Only armchair politicians are immune from committing mistakes. Errors are inherent in political action. -“Until I was jailed I never fully appreciated the capacity of memory, the endless string of information the head can carry.” http://www.punchng.com/news/inspiring-quotes-from-mandela/ |
By Gbenga Olarinoye Comrade Bankole Afilaka, the chairman, of the caretaker committee of Labour Party in Osun State spoke on the pace and pattern of politics in Osun State. Excerpts: What are the plans of the Labour Party for the 2014 Governorship election in Osun State? I think at this point, the Labour Party is working assiduously towards getting the best candidate. We have had some people coming to us and expressing their interest and some have not come to us but have expressed their interests on the newspapers. For us, our assignment is on behalf of the Osun people to get the best candidate that would be the actual alternative and real change in Osun. Change in Osun is in many dimensions, we want unencumbered leadership, and we want the kind of leadership where the people can relate directly, we want the kind of leadership that would be honest in delivery of public policy. We condemn out rightly the idea in which government of the day use to oil propaganda machinery. For instance, if you go around, you look at the entire state and it’s almost branded with Aregbesola’s face, we are still surprised that the INEC have not called him to order and we have written another petition and we are hoping that INEC will look into it as a matter of urgency. We want the best candidate for Labour party on behalf of the people that will deliver the dividends of democracy to the masses of Osun state, not somebody that will mortgage the state and mortgage it for the generation to come and then use some kind project to daze us through a propaganda- drive that is unprecedented in the history of politics in Nigeria. For us in Labour party, what we want to do in 2014 is to unseat Aregbesola and I can tell you as a matter of fact, Aregbesola is gone already; it is just a matter of time. Does your party have what it takes to dislodge him? I can tell you as a matter of fact that Labour party is the only party that is going to remove Aregbesola and he (Aregbesola) knows this. Aregbesola thinks he is giving us development but what he has given us is something to help push his own image. As you can see, his face is everywhere and I would not be too surprised if the face is found in your bedroom because that is what he is all about but we want government not propaganda, I think this is a fundamental difference between our party. To what extent have you been able to resolve the internal crisis that rocked your party? That has been put to bed. The reality of the matter is that the court struck out the Aregbesola instigated court case. We are receiving a large influx of people across the state but more importantly, we believe strongly that the government of Osun State is a danger to democracy. Why do we say that? He is beginning to give the state a bad name by exporting large elements of our state to go and cause electoral anarchy during Anambra gubernatorial election. We warned of this during Ondo state election that he was sending thugs to Ondo state. Now he has been caught in the act; we know that those boys were working for a known Aregbesola’s apologist in Osun State. He was the one chairing a group of about 183 that was supposedly registered in Lagos with guns and fake ballot papers (for the Anambra election). This is a disgrace to our state and its time we condemn it. Aregbesola is a danger to democracy; the government needs to put him on security watch with immediate effect. Somebody that is exporting thugs elsewhere to go and fight an election that doesn’t concern him, what do you think is going to do when Osun comes to 2014? http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/12/yes-aregbesola-danger-democracy/ |
Yes, Buhari, Tinubu, APC Are Foolish, Idiotic any problem with that? |
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly warned the PDP not to to go ahead with its diabolical plan to declare vacant the seats of the five PDP Governors who recently defected to the APC, saying apart from being illegal and smacking of double standard, such a move has the potential to plunge the polity into chaos. In a statement, Thursday, in Abuja by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said that even as the PDP has continued to lick the mortal wound inflicted on it by the loss of five preeminent Governors in one fell swoop, any attempt by the party (PDP) to act in desperation and declare the Governors’ seats vacant will be met with an unprecedented show of people power that will end, once and for all, the impunity of the PDP and the Presidency. ”We have irrefutable evidence that the PDP is desperately shopping for a pliant Judge who will be heavily induced to declare vacant the seats of the five Governors who recently defected to the APC. We also have the name of the lawyers who have been retained by the PDP for this hatchet job. ”We are in possession of the various nefarious legal options being explored by the villainous duo of the PDP and the Presidency but we hereby serve a strong notice to the duo that any attempt by anyone through any means other than what is provided for in section 188 of the 1999 Constitution as amended will not only have grave consequences but will leave the polity severely bruised. ”We know the PDP and the Presidency are anarchic and nihilistic, and will not mind to pursue any narrow and selfish objective, even if doing such can plunge the nation into crisis. But their cup is gradually getting full. Having got away with their trademark impunity in Delta and Anambra States, these lawless, reckless and feckless duo of maleficence now believe they can continue to act without regards to the laws of the land and with no scintilla of decency. ”We wish to state unequivocally that should the PDP go ahead with this plan, there will be widespread repercussions as the APC has resolved that henceforth, every act of impunity of the PDP and the Presidency will be met with stiff resistance in the form of a vociferous telegraphing of people power, the likes of which have not been witnessed in these parts,” it said. APC reminded the PDP and the Presidency that a party that boasts of 16 Governors….still counting…and has control of the National Assembly has what it takes to use people power to stop acts of impunity, disregard for the laws of the land and barbaric brigandage – and that is exactly what the APC will do in the event of any unlawful declaration of the five Governors’ seats vacant. The party also warned against any attempt by the PDP and the Presidency to turn back the hands of the clock as far as the cleaning up of the judiciary is concerned, by inducing a servile and disreputable Judge to do the duo’s bidding. ”We recognize the efforts of the present CJN to sanitize the Judiciary since she assumed the mantle of leadership but she should not allow any black leg to reverse the gains that have been recorded on the altar of unmitigated avarice. This is because if that happens, Nigerians will hold the Judiciary vicariously liable for the catastrophic consequences that may follow,” it said. Accusing the PDP of engaging in double standard, APC said ”For all of 14 years, elected members of the State Houses of Assembly as well as the National Assembly have been defecting mostly to the PDP and no court has ever declared their seats vacant. ”Late Senator Wahab Dosunmu and Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, then of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), blazed the trail when they decamped to the PDP within a year of their election. Since then scores of elected lawmakers at state and federal levels have defected to the PDP without any eyebrows being raised or anyone declaring their seats vacant. ”When Governors Ikedi Ohakim of Imo State and Theodore Orji of Abia state, both elected on the platform of the PPA, and Governor Isah Yuguda of Bauchi state, who was elected on the platform of the ANPP, defected to the PDP, nobody declared their seats vacant. ”As a matter of fact, the PDP under late President Umar Yar’Adua organized an elaborate reception to welcome Gov. Yuguda to the PDP. Why then should the case of the five PDP Governors (still counting) who have joined the APC be different? Why is the PDP suddenly afraid of taking the same medicine it has been administering to others? Does it mean that all the bravado that has been displayed by the PDP, which says it is not bothered by the defection of the five Governors, is just a facade to hide its deep pain at the monumental loss?” the party queried. It also asked the PDP and the Presidency, if they can allow a rare moment of introspection, to go and read – and be guided by – the ruling of the Supreme Court after the PDP attempted to make then Vice President Atiku Abubakar to lose his seat and to also strip him of his privileges following his defection to the ACN. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/12/dont-remove-defecting-govs-apc-warns-pdp/ |
By Ademola Adeyemo Adibe Emenyonu and Seriki Adinoyi The hope of a final resolution of the prolonged impasse in the ongoing strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was raised Wednesday by the ASUU Chairman, University of Ibadan branch, Dr Segun Ajiboye when he stated that the strike would soon come to end especially as the federal government has begun to shift grounds. He did not give details and the extent of ground shifting the federal government had done. The federal government had earlier given the resume-or-be-sacked ultimatum which should have ended yesterday, but later extended it to December 9. Some universities have either resumed or announced their resumption dates, even as some others like University of Jos have vowed to continue the strike. Ajiboye dropped the hint in Ibadan yesterday during the session of tributes organised to honour the late Professor Festus Iyayi, who was killed in a motor accident while on his way to attend a meeting on how to resolve the ASUU crisis. Ajiboye noted that the ceremony organised by by ASUU was not only to mourn Iyayi but also to mobilise ASUU members towards pursuing the struggle to its logical conclusion. The academic community in the university staged a candle light procession in honour of the late former National President of ASUU. The ASUU members, including the Vice- Chancellor of the university, Professor Isaac Adewole, and some other principal officers, adorned in black gowns, commenced the procession at the ASUU secretariat, Mellanby Hall of the school and marched to the Faculty of Arts enroute Kenneth Dike Road with solidarity songs rendered in low mournful tone. In his speech, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Adewole, said the dreams of Iyayi should be made to come true. Adewole commended the courage and the resilience of Iyayi, describing him as a gentleman who was committed to not only the development of education in Nigeria but towards good living of Nigerians. In his tribute, a former National President of ASUU, Professor Sola Olukunle, described Iyayi as a man of peace whose peace mission is also based on reasonable principles, therefore it would be a great disservice if the current struggle is subdued and disallowed to reach its logical conclusion as intended by the late leader. Speaker after speaker including the Dean of Faculty of Arts, Professor Remi Raji, Dr Femi Aborisade, Prof. Francis Egbokhare and Professor John Anetor described the death Iyayi as unfortunate, and needless, noting that if the government had honoured the agreement it reached with ASUU, the death would have been avoided. In the same way, the academic and civil society communities in Benin City organised a procession march in Iyayi’s honour. During the procession, members of UNIBEN branch of ASUU were joined by hundreds of their colleagues from University of Ilorin, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma (AAU), Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, etc. Other groups also represent included Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Conference of Non- Governmental Organisations (CONGOS), Joint Action Front (JAF), the Parents Consultative Association of Nigerian Universities (PCANU). The march, which began at the Faculty of Arts and. Social Sciences, University of Benin at about 10a.m., took a long walk of about five kilometres to the residence of the late Professor of Business Administration, Bello Street, off Benin/Lagos expressway. Addressing the people at the residence of the late former Chairman of ASUU, Chairman of UNIBEN ASSU, Dr. Anthony Monye-Emina, described Iyayi as one of Nigeria's number one heroes that have fallen, and a hero of ASUU struggles. He said the march was the beginning of activities to mark the exit of the late Professor. He recalled that the journey that claimed the life of Iyayi, began on a pleasant note that morning with Iyayi relieving the last meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan and how he urged them to show true commitment to the struggle. Human Rights lawyer, Femi Falana, urged ASUU never to relent in the struggle, but to continue from where Iyayi left. . He disclosed that ASUU and Iyayi family members have mandated him to challenge the "murder" of Iyayi in the court. Also addressing the crowd of sympatisers, Chairman of ASUU, University of Ilorin chapter, Dr. Taiwo Oloruntoba-Oju, said the late Iyayi had cloned many other Iyayis while alive, to carry on the fight, adding that the only way to ensure that what Iyayi fought for was not allowed to die with him is to sustain the struggle. Other speakers eulogised Iyayi, whom they called a hero, adding that his death has actually immortalised him. Eldest son of Iyayi, Ehidiamen, who received the mourners on behalf of the family, thanked them for the support they have given to the family since the demise of their father. He was later presented with signed copy of the condolence register opened by the union. Speaking on its resolve to continue with the strike, University of Jos chapter of ASUU said yesterday that it will not resume lectures until it receives directives from its national officials to that effect, adding that it will not go back to class even after the expiration of the extended deadline given by the federal government. The chairman of the ASUU Unijos chapter, Dr David Jangkam said majority of the 1012 union members at Unijos were not bothered by federal government's sack threats. Jangkam said, “University of Jos chapter, wants to categorically state that we cannot be cowed or perturbed by the threat from the Minister of Education and other agents of government; we remain resolute and committed to the struggle and shall not waver from the strike until government does the right thing." Similarly, the Lagos State University (LASU) chapter of ASUU, resolved to continue with the strike until government meets the union’s demands. The Chairman of LASU branch Adekunle Idris, described the threat to sack lecturers who refused to resume work by Wednesday as an outdated approach to solving issues and a joke. “I’m sure they will get their professors and doctors from Alaba or Idumota market. Maybe they will employ some from India or Cuba to teach the students,” he said sarcastically. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/ASUU-promises-to-end-strike-as-fg-shifts-ground/165912/ |
