Nigerian top footballer, Mikel Obi was recently duped of N100m and to think that, one of his close friends carried out the action Ladun Liadi reports that the footballer was duped by a close friend after he was shown a property to buy. On falling in love with the property, Mikel Obi gave the alleged friend a check of N100m to purchase it for him (Mikel). Everything went on as planned until the supposed friend cashed out the money and disappeared into thin air. Confirming the story, a close source says “Mikel still finds it difficult to believe, they were very close…the so-called friend is no longer seen in town and his phone numbers have been unreachable.” |
The Kogi State born actress now has another headache at the moment to worry about. The mother of one is battling a far more grievous challenge. Few days ago, she fumed on twitter. She wrote,"Even with all the paying press to diss me, I still came this far. Take the back sit babe, behind me is where you belong, so back off and quit trying,"she wailed. Who is the person dissing Mercy? No one knows who she is referring to but there are some tale-bearers pointing in the direction of her alleged sworn enemy, Tonto Dike or her husband's first wife, Lovely Okojie. |
It has taken alternating weeks of protests, silence and more protests to get university lecturers in the same room as President Goodluck Jonathan. Supervising education minister, Nyesom Wike quickly made his presentation on Monday and jetted off to Paris for a UNESCO general assembly meeting Tuesday, leaving the president to hammer nails into government agreement with Academic Staff Union of Universities. The meeting which lasted for much of Monday may be a watershed in the four-month-long strike by lecturers, but it has potential for the sort of moral persuasion lecturers may need to hear from a president who’s spent time in academia. “It is not about this-and-that meeting,” says Oyewale Olusegun of the think-tank, Eduwatch Consult and Research Centre, when asked at a press conference what he would do if he were president. “If the president of this country calls ASUU and has a meeting one-on-one with them today, the strike will be called off.” It has lingered since July as administration officials urged ASUU to heed governments' olive-branch overtures, as ASUU accused government of insincerity and as different groups—from students and herbalists to market women and commentators on labour and education issues—threatened, cajoled, begged and even wept. Late October, Haruna Danjuma, president of National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria, broke into tears before cameras and recorders as he narrated how the strike had turned “disastrous” for young people denied the classroom. He also demanded both government and lecturers to publish “hidden truths” about their agreement at the heart of the strike. “We want the two bodies to tell us the hidden truth of what was agreed in 2009. The parents are suffering. The students are suffering as well,” he said. The negotiations centred on conditions of service, funding, university autonomy and academic freedom—all contained in documents ASUU uploaded on its website. But it’s the money factor—government’s agreement to shell out N1.5 trillion in funding for all universities and N3.6 million per student of state universities between 2009 and 2011—that's grabbed the most headlines. The conditions of service still linger. And university autonomy, which would leave government free and universities locked in tight competition was not pursued, a source close to that negotiation tells Daily Trust. “Government thought the agreement would be the harbinger of university autonomy—self governing, self funding and self regulating.” Official documents Daily Trust obtained show then education minister, Sam Egwu authorised Gamaniel Onosode, a former pro-chancellor of University of Ibadan to “commence re-negotiation” and sign an amended 2006 provisional draft agreement between government and National Association of Academic Technologies. He also led government’s re-negotiation team with ASUU. But the move has recently come under criticism when Senate President David Mark made comments questioning the persons who negotiated and signed the standing agreement on government’s behalf. “No point was taken that wasn’t cleared with government,” says the inside source. Referring to Mark’s comments, the source adds, “Giving the impression that some people negotiated for government is far fetched.” In addition, the signed draft demanded a committee to regularly meet and monitor how the agreement was to be implemented, which fell under “other matters” during negotiations. The Implementation Monitoring Committee, as it was called, two pro-chancellors, one federal university vice chancellor, a representative each of National Universities Commission and the federal education ministry, five members of ASUU, one head each from pro-chancellors and vice chancellors committee of state universities—along with one senator from the senate committee on education and a counterpart from the House of Representatives. But legislators’ membership of the committee “wasn’t apparent because the Senate and House of Representative members hardly attended the meetings” of the committee, said the source. “Any fault should be on the National Assembly, for not attending.” Whatever truths lie in the agreement and any fresh one that might arise from a flurry of closed-door meetings that began last week could end the strike. But what happens after a temporary end of industrial action could spell what really lies ahead for education in Nigeria. |

Yesterday, the social media got busy again with the dirty fight between Don Jazzy and Wande Coal over an alleged theft of intellectual property belonging to the former, used by the latter. We had reported also yesterday that Wande Coal may land in prison if Don Jazzy goes ahead to press charges against him on the matter. However, the man who finally completed the controversial 'Babyface' song, Shizzi, who is also Davido's music producer, has reportedly released a statement on the issue. He disclosed in the statement that someone else (ostensibly Don Jazzy) took the credit for the 'Go Low' beat he (Shizzi) made for Wande Coal, which was released under Mavin Records. He said even at that, he didn't make a fuse about it as Don Jazzy is doing. Shizzi said in his short release that,“I have heard and seen some folks rant about me stealing production credit for Wande Coal’s new single 'Baby Face' and I would like to clarify this issue. I was only doing my job by making the beat for Wande and that’s what I did. I don’t see any reason why people should jump into quick conclusions without taking their time to really dig into the matter for facts. "Two years back, I remember I created a Demo for Wande Coal's 'Shawty Go Low' and someone else took the credit. I was in shock because I had plans to finish the song with Wande and was hoping it would be released as a single which I produced." His response may have also indicted Don Jazzy of an intellectual property theft, which Don Jazzy is crying foul about. |
Controversial star, Cossy Orjiakor has denied ever acting in any soft p0r^ film as being speculated in some quarters. The 'movie scarce' star also said that next time anyone does such story about her, she would sue. The largely endowed singer-cum-dancer claimed that a blogger had put up that story to gain traffic to his website. She then asked her fans to disregard the report. "Disregard any story about me being in a p0r^ movie. It's a ploy by a hopeless blogger to get traffic. Next time, I will track them down and sue," Cossy disclosed. Nigeriafilms.com |

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Malam Lamido Sanusi, said the bank would begin capturing of biometric data of bank customers to ensure better services. In his words '“The underlining issue facing many banks in Nigeria is lack of unique identity of Nigerian customers. “The biometrics gives you a unique identification because you cannot change your finger.“We have a large population of illiterates. People go to ATM and cannot remember their pin numbers, but with biometric ATMs and POS, with your finger you can withdraw your money. “And also, if you go to the bank and you don’t have your check book your finger is all the identification you require for you to take your money. What's ur take on this? |
