The Academic Staff Union of Universities may join the Nigeria Labour Congress in the ongoing industrial action.

The Owerri Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Prof Uzo Onyebinama, disclosed this at a press conference at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State.

While debunking that the strikes were not sponsored by the opposition parties, Onyebinama said the reason of ASUU strike was as a result of the Federal Government’s inability to fulfill the 2009 agreement with the union on the welfare of its members.

His statement read in part,

“You will recall that the 2009 FGN —ASUU Agreement made provision for the re-negotiation of the Agreement every three (3) years.

“Consequently, the first renegotiation of the Agreement should have been in 2012. This was not to be. The first renegotiation of the Agreement commenced in March 2017.

“As we speak now, the renegotiation exercise has broken down since May 2018 (after 14months), due largely to the deliberate tactics adopted by the leader of the Government Team, Dr. Wale Babalakin, to scuttle the renegotiation, by jettisoning the principle of collective bargaining and the gains of previous agreements, memorandum of understanding and memorandum of action.

“In addition, the government team insisted that education ought to be funded from ‘diverse sources’ and consequently proposed the establishment of an Education Bank and a Students’ Loan Scheme.”

The Union urged the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, provide a platform for the leadership of ASUU to engage State Governors on issues of proliferation of universities, underfunding of state universities, undue interference in the administration of state universities, and the non-implementation of various components of the 2009 Agreement in many state universities.

The union said it would be left with no other choice than to embark on an industrial action if the contentious issues were not resolved.

The academic members of staff of three tertiary Institutions in Osun State have declared the immediate commencement of an indefinite strike action.

The strike action according to them is over 18 months of outstanding salaries and other entitlements owed by the Osun state government.

The three institutions involved are Osun State Polytechnic in Iree, Osun State College of Technology in Esa-Oke and Osun State College of Education in Ila Orangun.

The spokesperson for the Academic Staff Unions of Polytechnics (ASUP) in all the institutions, Jacob Adegbite, after a congress held at Iree Campus on Friday told journalists that the action is imperative in order to register their grievances to the state government.

“We also required that our promotion exercise should be conducted and the financial implication implemented up to date. With all these issues not resolved, the Congress, therefore, resolved to embark on indefinite strike action,” Adegbite said.

However, the Osun state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Lani Baderinwa, in his response said it will be wrong for the workers to go on strike. He noted that the state government had earlier held a meeting with the workers and some agreements reached.

“The government is yet to be aware of any strike going on in any of its establishment as I speak. I believe that they won’t do what is not right. I do not think it will be right to go on strike when we just discussed and agreed on certain things.

Although Baderinwa did not explain the agreements reached with the workers, they are however proceeding on the strike and among other demands, seeking the fulfilment of collective agreements and payment of financial effects of workers promoted since 2014.

WAEC 2018 Senior School Certficate Examination SSCE Results have been released. “786,016 candidates representing 49.98% obtained credits and above in minimum of five subjects including English Language and Mathematics. Full details below;



Announcing the release of the results at the National office of the couincil in Lagos, the head of Nigeria Office, Mr Olu Adenipekun disclosed that. 786,016 candidates representing 49.98% obtained credits and above in minimum of five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.


It was gathered that a total of 1,578,846 candidates registered for the examination from 17,886 recognised secondary schools in Nigeria. Out of the registered candidates, 1,572,396 candidates sat the examination.

Out of the number that sat for the exam in Nigeria, 1,470,338 candidates, representing 93.51% have their results fully processed and released. The Certificates of such candidates will be ready in 90 days from today.

102,058 candidates representing 6.49% have a few of their subjects still being processed due to errors traceable to the candidates in the course of registration or writing the examination.

A further break down of the results shows that 1,213,244 candidates representing 76.84% obtained credits and above in a minimum of any five subjects (i.e with or without English Language and/or Mathematics.)

“858,424 candidates representing 54.59% obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects including English Language but without Mathematics.

“786,016 candidates representing 49.98% obtained credits and above in minimum of five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.

“In this category were 389,655 male and 396,361 female, representing 47.32% and 52.92% respectively. ”

Candidates can proceed to WAEC's official website https://www.waecdirect.org/ to check their results using the result checker pin and serial number contained on their smart identity card used during the conduct of the examination.
